  4. Scabs (5:35)
Review: Par Avion collective member Agrippa returns with his first full release since last year's "Mygraine Urgraine". Once again getting playful with his titles, once again covering some vast and unforgiving terrains, each of the four cuts takes you to a different corner; "Squid Girls" is an aquatic bashy piece with its techno tendrils lashing wildly, "Dead Wait" is pure crushed stomps with a crunchy warehouse vibe while "Spice Raiders" takes us deep into techno territory; loopy, paranoid and laced with unnerving sound designs before "Scabs" brings us to a fractured close as the 'hot pick' of the EP (not sorry). Time to get Agrippa yourselves...

  1. Andrea - "MT" (6:14)
  2. Anybody Anytime - "Uncomfortable" (live mix) (4:26)
  3. The Sympathizer - "Bad Dope" (3:59)
  4. Farron - "Cosmic Lies" (6:53)
  5. Kreggo - "La Mia Giungla" (4:44)
Review: Time Horizon's second episode enlists another team of dancefloor snipers delivering 5 brain-dancing tunes crafted appositively for late night use. After his appearance on the first XCPT record, Andrea is back on the label with his unmistakable shuffling drums and a heavy square bassline followed by Anybody Anytime covering the uptempo-zone with a rotative junglistic tool dressed with celestial pads; closing the A side TANS reveals his new robot alias The Sympathizer providing a neurotic electro progression fully based on his modular system. Flipping the records you will find two XCPT homies bringing the audience straight into Matera landscapes: Farron gets a 909 unceasing toms orchestra surrounded by his atmospheric leads while Kreggo illustrates clearly his hypnotic mid-low vision of breakbeat locked by a mystic bass for the whole track.

Week-End (hand-stamped 140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: DEGREY 002. Rel: 12 Feb 18
  1. Week-End (5:43)
  2. 6PNHHPE (7:04)
  3. Stabilizer (4:36)
  4. Seita (5:36)
Review: De Grey launched last year with a 12" from Webstarr, and now it follows up with the raw, rough and ready sound of Jack Angle. "Week-End" is a lithe, percussive beast of a track that matches bloated kicks with glassy hits for a tracky but distinctive end result. "6PNHHPE" is a looped up, off-kilter affair that sports an industrial techno thread but heads into stranger territory with ease. "Stablilizer" is a more balanced, melodic affair but again those distinctive metallic tones pervade the mix and inject some real character into Angle's music. "Selta" takes this approach and whips it up into the most lively, peak-time minded belter on the whole record, sneakily tucked away on the B2.

  1. Solitude (5:07)
  2. On The Cusp (4:51)
  3. Alone In A Timespan (4:05)
  4. Calm (4:49)
Review: Keysound's South Coast connection expands as Atlas, a Brighton contemporary to Etch, is welcomed into the fold with the Solitude EP which stretches the boundaries of the label's rollage aesthetic, weightless synth experimentation and established sub heavy paradigms to near breaking point. Keysound followers should recognise the title cut, it's been a set opener for Dusk + Blackdown for well over a year and it's easy to see why. A palate cleansing opener subtly shifts towards intricate, skeletal drum flickers and sub gravity and the sort of emotional apex "Hyph Mngo" once delivered. Atlas deploys a similar approach on subsequent track "On The Cusp" whilst the B-side features some superb experiments in bass science. The dubby, bass-heavy rollage of "Calm" is a fine way to end a super Keysound debut.

Danger (12")
Cat: BLNK 008. Rel: 18 Aug 16
  1. Danger (6:34)
  2. Gibbon 5 (6:27)
  3. Insomnia (5:22)
  4. The Legendary (6:25)
Review: You can always rely on London's Blank Mind imprint to deliver the freshest, most gloriously noxious bass twists around. After a short hiatus, the label returns with four slithering licks of beats and low frequencies from South Africa's AudioBoyz, Durban's collaborative project consisting of Fatonic, Motion, Mudpunk and Njeh. Now, this particular strain of tribal dance music has been coined 'Gqom', and it's the perfect balance between urban and rural, modern and ancient. "Danger" and "Gibbon5", although different in their choices of sounds and aesthetic, are both made up of the same sort of ritualistic outlook that has been missing from the bass world for a while. On the flip, "Insomnia" slices its sharp percussion stabs over a thin layer of bass and an even more stripped-down sonic landscape, leaving "The Legendary" to deliver the most musical content on this EP, a dark and alluring wormhole of sonics. TIP!

  4. S. Berserker (4:48)
  5. Panic Bull (4:11)
Review: Having shot into the limelight in 2012 with a 12" on Hessle Audio followed up by an outing on Liberation Technologies, Bandshell has since been on covert operations largely centred around releasing his music himself via Bandcamp. Now he's extended that practice into the B.S.Hell label, providing a physical presence to his wayward experimentation on the fringes of bass music. It's a sound that naturally aligns with the likes of Batu and Laksa, but also defiantly makes its own statement as well. With five tracks of distinctive drum science and textural voodoo to indulge in, this is a welcome return to wax for a thrilling, self-motivated producer.

  3. 2 Da Core (RP Boo remix) (4:45)
  4. Nuh Ramp (4:43)
Review: Basic Rhythm's second appearance on Planet Mu plots a path from hardcore to footwork via jungle in devastating fashion. The A side houses the kinetic "2 Da Core" with mashed up vocal samples and crunchy drums into a bass heavy bomb, followed by "Get Up" with its hazy vocal samples and fat bass which comes together into a weird and wonderful rhythm. RP Boo's remixes are rather few and far between but we're treated to one here that is icy and skeletal, with echoing hits ringing out over impossibly deep sub bass. "Nah Ramp" is a destructive final offering with off grid clatter and lurching drums keeping you in a spin.

Review: Following his releases on Planet Mu and Sneakers Social Club, the inimitable Basic Rhythm returns on his own new series Raw Basics with two club hurting versions. "Break It Down VIP" goes back to one of his earlier tunes in 2016 and flips it into an absolute rave monster. Meanwhile on the B, London bubbler Parris slows things right down to a moody dubby sludge, complete with big droning siren. Heavy, low and slow. Perfect for the summer.

  6. Blood (3:28)
  7. Blood (Walton remix) (4:21)
Review: Big Hands, big heart, big ideas; Milan man now based in London Andrea Bonalumi blesses us with his biggest release to date on Beat Machine. Fractured, frazzled and fried in future innovation, we're blindsided by the offbeat bubbles on "Prequel" and shunted and stuttered by disco freakery on "More Than Love". Elsewhere the title track boils things down to a much sludgier, warped and weird shuffle, "Tensegrity" reimagines rave for a modern day jilted generation while "Kick Blood" kicks us down a twisted UKG rabbit hole. "Blood" concludes this extensive extended player both in its breakbeat original form and gun-toting instrumental grime take from Walton. Big.

Cat: HOTLINE 016. Rel: 25 Jun 19
  1. Doubles (4:40)
  2. One More Time (3:54)
  3. Nexx (3:38)
Review: "One More Time" eh? 10, 20 or maybe even 50 more times would be more appropriate as Sam Binga and Marcus Visionary lock horns over three table-style / UK funky riddims. The title track has a classic DJ Gregory vibe to it, all bashy, tropical and laced with intoxicating percussion elements, "Doubles" is pure carnival incarnate with its big sunny hook and hip-shaking bashment. Finally "Nexx" closes with a little rave element. Hoxton meets Detroit by way of Berlin; it's one of the tracks you could imagine being played and kicking off in any style set from techno to garage. Holy grail business - ring the Hotline today.

  2. Keppel - "Taken For Granted" (6:38)
  3. Henry Greenleaf - "Snide" (4:59)
  4. Formant Value - "Polycausa" (7:03)
Review: Well Street keep up the heat as one of the most inventive labels operating in the liminal space between techno, dub and rhythmic mysticism. These various artist releases are also a perfect introduction to some essential new talent, and that's clear from the off with the snaking, echo chamber pressure of Box 5ive. Keppel's "Taken For Granted" is a distinctive slice of crooked 21st century soul that sports a whiff of early Kimbie / Blake in the vocals and overall attitude. Henry Greenleaf's "Snide" is a taut drum track that teases as much as it delivers, and Formant Value trips out into a meditative soundscape of pattering percussion and spacious atmospherics.

  1. Liquid Gold (5:03)
  2. Ease Up (5:59)
  3. Steeze Flex (4:39)
Review: Charlie Baker's second self-released EP as Breaka begins with something bold, booming and undeniably attractive: a rave-lighting number that giddily joins the dots between two-step UK garage, the rugged darkness of breakbeat garage and the piano-powered, loved-up bliss of rave era breakbeat hardcore. Throw in a spine-tingling breakdown and you have a copper-bottomed hit (as North Norfolk Digital's own Alan Partridge might say). Baker's love of life-affirming piano motifs comes to the fore once more on "Ease Up", a deeper affair rich in weighty sub-bass, snappy broken beats and dreamy chords, while "Steeze Flex" is a pleasingly jazzy number smothered in rich chords and bubbly, sun-kissed electronics.

Swinging Flavors #7 (blue vinyl 7")
Cat: BMRSF 007. Rel: 11 Sep 18
  1. Damn Hot (4:31)
  2. Damn Hot (Danny Scrilla remix) (4:52)
Review: The seventh volume in Beat Machine's ongoing "Swinging Flavors" series of singles arrives on vibrant turquoise vinyl. This time round, it's a relatively new artist at the controls: Breaka, whose debut 12" on Holding Hands tickled our fancy earlier in the year. Happily, "Damn Hot" lives up to its title, brilliantly joining the dots between the snappy drum machine snares, cut up vocal samples and incessant hustle of Chicago Juke, the crunchy breakbeat since of old school jungle, and the futurist intent of contemporary drum and bass. It's really rather good, all told, with Danny Scrilla's flipside remix - a spacey fusion of intergalactic synthesizer melodies and ruffneck early '90s jungle tropes - also hitting the sweet spot.

Review: Burial's first multiple-track release since "Rival Dealer" three years ago: "Young Death" takes the lead with weave of deep, scratchy and evocative human textures while soulful vocal shards yearn and flutter over soft faraway beats. "Nightmarket" takes an even more introspective meander through the shadowy unknown with fractured arpeggios, distant whispers and thick graininess that envelops almost overwhelmingly. As forward, unusual and unique as ever, Burial remains in a league of his own. Limited.

Subtemple (10")
Cat: HDB 108. Rel: 23 May 17
  1. Subtemple (7:18)
  2. Beachfires (9:51)
Review: Naturally, there's been plenty of hype surrounding this new Hyperdub 10", which features Burial indulging his often-discussed ambient influences. It's a typically creepy and ghostly affair, with the lack of beats - if not rhythmic elements - only serving to amplify the shadowy producer's impeccable sound design and brilliant use of manipulated field recordings. A-side "Subtemple" is particularly paranoid in tone, featuring as it does chilling melody loops, curious vocal samples, looped vinyl crackle and all manner of layered background noise. Flipside "Beachfires" is, if anything, even more dystopian, with Burial basing the action around the kind of pulsing chords that gust back and forth like an autumnal breeze.

Review: Prising himself away from his Atari ST for a moment, beat don Cannon links with Manchester artist Patrice for some purring 130 dark garage funk. Bubbling bass, writhing beats, it's a slinky one. With Snowy on hand for both a special "Vox" and "Dub" version which echoes and teases, the two cuts tickle spots you didn't even know you had. Sting like a "Butterfly"... Hum like a bee.

Review: The giant energy of an early 90s rave meet classic hip hop beats straight from the dusty SP-1200 on Cazion's debut record:

"Rap music runs very deep in my veins; by the time I was fourteen I was making mixtapes and obsessing over the huge, funky, bombastic sounds of late eighties hip hop," says Cazion's Photocall. "I still aspire to capture the snap and the bigness of the kind of sound you'd hear on a Paul C record, a Public Enemy record, and I still use the the same machines those guys used to do it," he adds, gesturing at the wealth of vintage gear cluttering his retro spaceship of a studio, The Escape Pod. "When you hear the first bar of this song, you might expect some dude with a cameo flattop to start rhyming about the Benzi Box in his Suzuki Samurai at any moment."

"We wanted to take it all the way," adds Maheras, from the depths of a glowing neon couch. "Some people shy away from using certain sounds because they're afraid to sound cheesy - but they forget to have fun. I'd rather have so much fun making a song that I forget to worry."

"Like the dancers we sampled," Photocall agrees. "The vocal snippets are from a British video that was shot on New Years Day, 1993, the morning after a giant rave. It's the middle of some field, people are pushing their cars out of the mud, and this one couple is still dancing their asses off. They don't care that there's no music playing; they're totally in the zone. My man DJ Duane happened to send us the link as we were programming the drums for this record, and something just clicked. We knew we were making this record for those two crazy kids, wherever they are. Possibly still in that field."

  4. Haddon - "Anabiosis" (3:00)
Review: Cong Burn continues to exercise one of the most promising instincts for future-minded music on this, their third release. It's surprising they haven't done more previously, considering the maturity of their curation, but either way the quality remains at an all time high here, leading in with some light and liquefied 4/4 sonics from Chekov before pirouetting into one of Duckett's illustrious abstractions around the techno blueprint. Label regular Lack is back on side B with the stern and punchy "Track 3," and then Haddon finishes the record off with "Anabiosis," a densely textured, slow creeping trip of a track.

  4. Rugged
Review: The Mancunian tones of Swamp81's resident MC Chunky are well known to those who tune in to the label's Rinse FM show on a regular basis. However, this debut EP, forwent any kind of vocal showcase for the kind of hefty, refined fusion of garage and techno we've come to expect from Loefah's empire. Arriving as a 12" doublepack featuring four tracks, The Chunky EP shows Chunky to have the production chops to match his skills on the microphone, showcasing a wide range of influences channeled through a uniquely dark mood; "Decca" is a straight up piece of rolling deep house with a shadowy basement vibe, while "Experiment 727? recalls the syncopated techno of Bambounou or Boddika's leaden beats, while on the second 12?, "Thang" is a masterclass in stripped back garage mechanics, and "Rugged" provides a lo-fi beat that ploughs the darkest recesses of instrumental grime for inspiration.

Review: Brussels' Cleveland has made a name for himself with excellent, left of centre drops on ESP Institute, Hivern Discs and others in the past. Now he's up on Kalahari Oyster Cult with more adventurous freakery that deals in outsider grooves and playful synth acrobatics that positively demand your attention. "Gamma" comes on with a steady broken beat that carries some wild lead hooks that show off Cleveland's confidence with his kit. "Ora" is equally marked out by dazzling analogue brushstrokes and expertly crafted percussion to send body and mind whirling. Then on the flip Piezo and Beta Librae both remix "Gamma", veering from tough, bass-led drum funk to cosmic incantations respectively.

Review: Heart rooted on the floor, head rooted in the stars, Clubroot returns after 10 years in other creative wildernesses with three glacial broken drum gems. "Conqueror" hits with that subtle sense of triumph thanks to the rumbling sub and momentum in the chords, arpeggios and instrumentation. "Control" goes for more of a classic breaks vibe with big swaggering kicks and an icy lead that flickers like a lifeline throughout. Finally we hit "Subterranean" where strong shades of techno and dub fuse with hypnotic effect. Welcome back Clubroot.

Review: Debut album time! Berlin-based CPE has a reputation for generous EPs but this body of work is a whole new brutalist level. Stirring his techno-meets-grime-meets-dubstep cauldron with a series of sharp implements, Tectonic is the perfect playground for the young fusionist's fire. From the distorted electroid energy of "For The Memory Exchange" to the pulverising drum militancy of "War On Codex" via the more restrained, dreamy "Lack Of Wrong Format" and the total glitch frenzy of "I Get It (Lost Banknote)", Cocktail Party Effect references so much of modern electronica yet sounds unlike anything else at all. Dark times call for dark music...

Lemons EP (12" in die-cut sleeve)
Cat: COLDR 012. Rel: 30 May 18
  1. Lemons (4:35)
  2. Bangers (4:07)
  3. Quite (5:18)
  4. Flat Football (4:20)
Review: Charlie "Kasket" Baldwin returns to Pinch's formidable Cold Recordings stable, an imprint focused on "new movements in the ever-evolving UK hardcore continuum". For his second salvo for the label, Baldwin serves up four floor-friendly cuts, beginning with the off0kilter drum rhythms, savagely chopped hip-hop vocal samples and trippy stabs of "Lemons". Those searching for heavy sub-bass action should start with the pulverizing low end and polyrhythmic punch of "Bangers", before flipping the disc and dropping the needle on "Quite", a hot-stepping affair that draws influence from both dubstep and UK garage without particularly sounding like either. Further mind-altering insanity can be found on closer "Flat Football", a wild and entertaining mixture of scattergun drum hits and wayward electronics.

  3. Septieme Seur (5:19)
  4. Bloodline (6:40)
Review: Sweeping up the demolition caused by his E-Fax EP as SENATE (with fellow Melbourne beat meddler Carmel), Consulate returns to Bitterfield with four remarkable fractured departures. Techno in spirit, breaks in a physical sense, there's a persistency and urgent loopiness running throughout on each track. That stabby chant on "Largs", those "Pulse-X" style depth plunge bass tones on "Trench Gun", and the rifle-like snare roll on the much deeper, mournful and almost Orbitalesque "Septieme Seur" are all fine examples. But for the most urgent, persistent experience of the EP he's saved the darkest jam for last; "Bloodline", a gritty, stern jungle piece that opens up into an almighty breakbeat crescendo right when you least expect it. Don't be bitter, be Bitterfield.

  3. Serpentrising (8:29)
  4. RZ Canin (4:50)
Review: Aussie dub-melder Consulate returns with another melting pot adventure that covers all corners. "In The Throne Room" sets the scene with ghettofunk claps and kicks and a crisp mystic switch on the drop before "Heraldry" switches things once again and hurls us down a deep dub rabbit hole where the bass devours you whole. Tensions raise on the flip as "Serpentrising" ups the charm to deep jungle pace before "RZ Canin" brings us back down to some form of a reality on a classic El-B-style dark garage flex. What a trip.

Idoru #2 (10" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: CONVEX 004. Rel: 07 Aug 12
  1. What I Need (feat Velvit)
  2. Aversion
  3. Desolation
  4. Four Faces
Review: The second collectible EP out of three, arriving on double white 10" vinyl, and containing tracks from Jon Convex's debut album, Idoru sees another four hard hitting fusions of techno and contemporary bass music. Unlike the first EP, which was surprisingly melodic, these tracks aim squarely at the floor, with "What I Need" a heavy tom-led piece of Detroit influenced techno, and "Aversion" providing some tracky functionalism. "Desolation" and "Four Faces" meanwhile provide some bleak electro dystopianism, much indebted to his Autonomic heritage.
