FRNDZNE 02 (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: FRNDZNE 02. Rel: 24 Apr 19
  1. Ames Henry & Paul Kav - "Business In Hasenheide" (5:57)
  2. Ames Henry - "Tribute" (6:28)
  3. Fanu - "Dubia" (6:48)
  4. Octo Octa - "For My Girls" (3:29)
Review: It's been two years since Kellam Matthews launched his retro-futurist, breakbeat-driven Frendzone label via a fine split EP featuring cuts from Ames Henry and Octo Octa. This follow-up is therefore arguably long overdue. Fittingly, it's Henry that gets things going in stellar fashion via Paul Kav collaboration "Business in Hasenheide", an urgent fusion of two-step drums, thrusting acid bass and jumpy synth stabs. Ames then goes solo on the breezy bounce of "Tribute", before Fanu successfully roughs things up via the mutant sub-bass, dystopian noises and distorted breakbeats of "Dubia". The undisputed highlight, though, is Octo Octa's "For My Girls", a wonderfully spooky and hectic jungle roller that's guaranteed to set pulses racing out on the dancefloor.

Hyperaesthesia EP
Hyperaesthesia EP (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: NH 010. Rel: 25 Sep 20
  1. Thought Experiment (7:36)
  2. Turing Machine (7:06)
  3. Thought Experiment (Loraine James remix) (3:47)
  4. Syntax (6:15)
Review: Nervous Horizon return with a special collaborative project from Object Blue and label co-boss Tsvi. Both sitting in the no-genre / body music hinterland, across three tracks they merge both of their uncompromising styles to create a unique mutant sound. 'Thought Experiment' stutters and flares with a wrought tension that's gradually released over rolling, skittering kickdrums (and subverted to pummelling levels by Loraine James on her remix) 'Turing Machine' bridges jungle with techno over a sparse 130 breakbeat. 'Syntax' closes the show on the most forthright note of the set. Pounding kicks and lightning breakbeat strikes, this hits with the militancy both artists share.

Objekt #4
Objekt #4 (hand-stamped 12" + MP3 download code) (1 per customer)
Cat: OBJEKT 004. Rel: 29 Mar 17
  1. Needle & Thread (9:26)
  2. Theme From Q (7:22)
Review: Since releasing the third volume in his white label 12" series back in 2013, Objekt (AKA Berlin-based Brit TJ Hertz) has become one of techno most in-demand talents. Here he returns to where it all began with volume four, in the process serving up a pair of certified late night treats. "Needle & Thread" sees him doff a cap to Paul Woolford's Special Request project, cannily combining typically Berlin-style techno elements - trippy noises, extended chords, weird effects, and so on - with punchy blasts of hardcore style breakbeats. The beats remain broken on UK Funky influenced flipside "Theme From Q", where vintage MK style melody motifs ride crunchy drums, fizzing electrofunk synth squiggles and mind-altering sub-bass.

Deep Red EP

  1. Deep Red (4:07)
  2. Rasputin (4:08)
  3. Deep Red (Erosion Flow remix) (6:42)
  4. Rasputin (Mak & Pasteman remix) (7:06)
Review: The latest recruit to the Dext Recordings cause is Otik, a producer who recently impressed via a solid outing on Bristol-based Durkle Disco. The real killer here is title track "Deep Red", a deliciously percussive workout built around a superb broken beat style rhythm track, spacey chords and weighty sub-bass. It's given the remix treatment by Erosion Flow, whose dirty remix is propelled forward at a rate of knots thanks to some thumping techno beats and ragged acid lines. Speaking of techno, bonus cut "Rasputin" sees Otik wander towards the kind of dirty, post-dubstep techno territory once inhibited by Peverlist. Mak and Pasteman's remix feels like an intergalactic update of Jaydee classic "Plastic Dreams".

Dioxide (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: DEXT 012. Rel: 11 Jun 19
  1. Dioxide (5:07)
  2. Tuskanary (5:24)
  3. Dioxide (Bruce Carbon Reduction) (5:41)
  4. Theia (3:27)
Review: More fine fare from Bristolian bass-head Otik, a producer last seen serving up a spacey chunk of percussively intense headiness on Intergraded's multi-artist "Orbitration". Our pick of a very strong bunch is "Dioxide", a pleasingly spaced-out post-dubstep exercise in sparse but weighty drums, alien electronic melodies and out-there aural textures. The obligatory rework can be found on side B, where the "Bruce Carbon Reduction" offers a skittish and fizzing dancefloor interpretation. Elsewhere, "Theia" is a crackling, slowly unfurling slice of yearning ambient bliss, while "Tuskanary" sees Otik pepper a drunken rhythm track with wonky modular motifs.

  12. Microplastics In My Bloodstream (7:57)
Review: At time of release, the knee pit or upper shin of the weirdest year in our time, we may feel like we're owed some type of steak or cake day, but German duo Otto have much healthier meal plans... It's Clam Day, and there's more than enough of this hearty brew to share. Flavours include the sweetness of buoyant pop, the savoury tanginess of oddball electronics and sharp twangs of 16-bit innocence, baked slow and low in a lo-fi oven over 12 tracks. Particularly tasty dishes include the woozy shoegaze stew of 'Chlorine', the delightful D&B-meets-Megadrive-in-Toy Town splashes of 'Sprained My Ankle', the garage band blues-cum-2020 global anthem 'Wash Your Hands' and the final floaty hoorah 'Microplastics In My Bloodstream'. Political but laced with a soothing optimism. Ideal for fans of Clarke and Jim Noir alike, this is perfect chowder for our lockdown-ravaged souls.
