  1. Alex Coulton - "Radiance" (6:12)
  2. Chevel - "Tailwind" (4:20)
  3. Simo Cell - "Escape The Fate" (6:30)
Review: For the fourth release on their promising Wisdom Teeth imprint, founders Facta and K-Lone have turned to the combined talents of old pal Alex Coulton, Italian produer Chevel, and fast-rising studio boffin Simo Cell. Coulton kicks things off, delivering a deliciously heavy and floor-friendly concoction that sits somewhere between broken techno, contemporary bass music, and the kind of comforting deepness more associated with hazy house productions. Chevel does an excellent job of calming things down, layering up bleeping electronics and ambient textures to create something reminiscent of mid '90s IDM, before Simo Cell attempts to "Escape The Fate" on a creepy cut that combines fizzing hi-hats and wonky ambient melodies, with drum programming and musical touches borrowed from EBM and industrial

  1. Kouslin - "Brothers" (4:08)
  2. Galtier - "Gyals" (4:49)
  3. Sheik - "Oxram" (4:21)
Review: Kouslin launches a brand new label and he's doing it total style. While no one can deny the crucialness of the name Le Chatroom, the real focus is on the music as the London artist tags up with two mates for a trio of far-out, forward-thinking bass/broken cuts. "Brothers" leaps with flautist delight while snake-like percussion rattles and rolls beneath. Aussie Nostro Hood winker Galtier gets his tech on with a Rolando style sense of melody and menace while Bumps man Sheik flexes a much slower jam, all 909s and raw machine soul. Covering corners you didn't even know existed, Le Chatroom has us in the palm of its paw.

  5. Space Afrika - "After They Entered It Was Only Evident" (3:59)
Review: "Shared Meanings" has been one of Mumdance's most ambitious and explorative projects to date; pulling together the four corners of the hardcore continuum and tying them in a tight bow, his mix has drawn elements and parallels between all genres and laced them in a narrative that mirrors and reflects throughout. Now, for limited time only, we have five of the 32 tracks he included in the mix ranging from his and Logos' totem track "Teachers" which pays homage to the UK's forefathers, to the pulverising thumpy bumpy techno of Nkisi's "Kinenga" via stasis sensation ambience from Space Afrika in the form of "After They Entered It Was Only Evident". Coordinates don't come much broader or deeper, "Shared Meanings" is Mumdance in full on explorer mode. Long may his meaningful trips continue.

Acecloud (10")
Cat: 001 RAIN. Rel: 14 May 19
  1. Samba - "Acecloud" (3:32)
  2. Samba & Argo - "Cookies" (3:17)
Review: Rising 140 sculptor Samba proudly presents his own label 26.RAIN. Following a whole string of heavily supported releases on the likes of System Music, Deep, Dark & Dangerous and Encrypted, the label is a new outlet for a fresh synth-led fusion style he's been developing gradually. Deep, musical, not shy of an 808 or a two-step or two, there's a touch of UKG, wave and trap deep across both sides. "Acecloud" is the big neon dreamer of the duo while "Cookies" crumbles a little more delicately and introspectively. An excellent launch release, we're saving our rainy day money for 002.

Review: Schockglatze is a long standing collaboration between artists working across several disciplines. With audio-visual performances, band projects and international exhibitions thus far, they have been causing a stir within the art and music worlds. Spank has already collaborated with a range of acclaimed vocalists, including Warrior Queen, Sensational and Christoph Waltz. As a competent producer, he forms the solid basis for the studio productions of Schockglatze. Nik Nowak has attracted international attention with his mobile sound sculptures and worked with Chicago footwork pioneers like (the late) DJ Rashad and DJ Spinn as well as Kevin Martin aka The Bug. Graphic artist, VJ and video director Moritz Stumm aka Ultramoodem brings to the project an 'inimitable rhythmicity' while creating a singular technique of audio-visual effects: the aesthetic of which has become a signature style of the collective.

  3. Mega - "Dangerous Liasons" (DVA remix) (2:46)
  4. Wiley - "Apocalypto" (DVA remix) (4:21)
Review: Neither Scratcha DVA, nor any of these legendary tracks and artists on this release need any introduction. It's taken about eleven years but the two highlights of "DREAMEATER 007" - A side "Kill All A' Dem" and "Taliban"- finally see the light of day. On the B side, we have the man remixing Mega's "Dangerous Liasons" in wonky street level fashion before he turns his deft hand to take on scene hero Wiley's "Apocalypto", churning out an intense tribal thriller to round things off on this long overdue release.

  2. Singlewhitefemale - "Dub" (3:34)
  3. Singlewhitefemale - "Secret Garden" (1:17)
Review: Oh gosh. Scratcha's up to his old head-spinning tricks again on this super limited 10" white label. His remix of "Basstone" takes the lead. A cult 1994 Louie Vega classic, DVA's twist is unlike anything you've ever heard; all sirens and frequencies and bashy clattering beats over uplifting chords, it's both overwhelmingly heavy and absurdly soulful in equal measures and it will totally melt brains this festival season. Comes complete with two deep and fractured perspectives from the mysterious/anonymous/perhaps-new-alias Singlewhitefemale; the shadowy fractured "Dub" and the woozy dreamweaver "Secret Garden". All stunning... Grab this while you can.

Review: Rounding up another year of dark experiments, Nervous Horizon invite Second Storey to bring 2016 to the warped, wrangled close it deserves. Hot on the heels of his "Bismuth" EP and Appleblim collaborations come three more adventures in pastures unclaimed: "Spin Cycle" is a grainy, decaying hypnosis loop, "Critters" is the type of two-step the devil dances to while "Sludge 3D" is a pounding slab of lo-fi fuzzy techno that unravels into a brilliantly trippy drum arrangement. Three tracks, three tales, one Storey.

  1. Fight For Us (Prins Thomas Diskomiks) (8:19)
  2. Loosen Up (Edward remix) (9:49)
Review: We're really glad to see Praveen and Travis 'Machinedrum' Stewart back on the scene and on Hotflush Recordings. The duo are always a pleasure to hear, and especially if they are accompanied by two heavy-hitters like Prins Thomas and Giegling/White associate Edward. The two producers each have a go at remising tunes from Sepalcure's latest album Folding Time, and they just seem like the perfect duo to mix things up in and proper. Norway's disco king Prins Thomas transforms "Fight For Us" into a lazy, beach-ready disco swelter with a poppy edge that seems to sway between balearic and boogie; Giegling's deep house experimenter Edward goes a little bit wilder by reshaping "Loosen Up" into shuffle house banger with a supremely off-kiter edge.

Deadman (12")

  2. Deadman (King Midas Death dub remix)
Review: Sam Shackleton's "Deadman" was the surprise hit of his recent Fabric mix - a sought-after gem that took his particular take on techno and dubstep in a thrilling new direction. Now, it's finally available on vinyl, alongside an impressive King Midas Sound remix from Kevin Martin. "Deadman" itself is the one for club plays, an intoxicating fusion of conga-led percussion - influenced, one expects, by the tropical beats of UK funky's most forward-thinking practitioners - and his usual densely layered atmospherics. The King Midas Remix, meanwhile, offers a spaced-out, heavily ambient take that delights and confuses in equal measure.

Review: The Well Street family continue to bloom with this assured grip of adventurous steppers from Significant Other. You know you're onto something serious as soon as "Postdrome" fires up in a tangle of break slices, percussive rattles and poised kicks. The sparse drum-focused style continues in a quicker fashion with the tense and twitchy "Delos", while "Brain Fingers" amps up the bass flex to make for a dance-wrecking-ball of a track. "Memory Drum" completes the set with interlocking patterns balanced between organic and electronic and draped in tones of icy dread.

  3. Triptan (5:18)
Review: Following the likes of Decka, Edeka and Tans A.M, Brooklyn's Significant Other steps up to the Berlin fusion fray with his own take on techno. Sitting somewhere between dub, electro, ambient, techno and D&B, each cut is an abyssal experience powered by spacious beats and thick, moody otherworldly atmospheres. "Delphic" the banger of the set with 150 halftime kicks giving a stark two-step D&B sensation, "Break The Web" takes 20,000 leagues under the sea and squeezes the air out of us while "Triptan" brings us back up to air with ambient mysticism. Significant.

  1. Biometric (4:59)
  2. Patience (6:13)
Review: After putting out a free compilation last year, Biome and Madam X's Kaizen label attained a sense of legitimacy in 2016 when they started putting out vinyl. After Biome took care of the first 12", Kaizen turn to Brotherhood paring Silas & Snare for this second offering, a killer two-track exercise in modern bass science. Title track "Biometric" demonstrates how well this Leeds duo utilise the sense of space in their productions, all elements crisply and sharply executed and built around that laser-like bassline. Complementing this, "Patience" sees Silas & Snare bring their percussive structures to the fore, all brushed textures shooting in intricate patterns for a fine club tool.

Review: Silas & Snare continue the heat on Madam X's Kaizen with their second single on the label this year. As always there's no letting up in terms of aesthetic, melting pot and energy. All sitting somewhere in the techno/hardcore/dub axis, "Pressure" lives up to its name with a rolling break, and warped grime basses, "Dreamscape" creates intensity with a loopy vocal hook and densely coded sense of tension while "Whistle Blower" brings us home on a deeper, more broken tip where noises aren't all what they seem. Feeling the pressure yet?

  4. Skreet Lvl Dub (4:27)
Review: Having set our world alight with his third Ilian Tape 12", 2012, back in the spring, Munich man Skee Mask delivers another essential collection of loose-limbed, broken techno workouts. Typically, he's on point from the word go, enveloping swinging, off-kilter techno breakbeats with swirling chords and cascading melodies on brilliant opener "Inti". His love of African-influenced polyrhythms is explored further on the ghostly, percussion-rich club cut "Kappelberg Chant" (which, incidentally, makes great use of choral chants), while "Routine" is a warm, loved-up and evocative tribute to rave-era British breakbeat-house. His debt to British dance music's formative years also comes to the fore on killer proto-jungle jam "Skreet Lvl Dub".

  1. Kordman Return (Swing mix) (5:12)
  2. Palo Alto (5:38)
  3. Fjorward Flex Dub (4:58)
  4. Glass Museum (5:25)
Review: Munich-based mystery man, Skee Mask, remains at the top of our Ilian Tape favourites. While we love the work of brothers Dario and Marco Zenker, the two label founders, we think that this guy's sound is the creme de la creme of contemporary, dub-filtered techno. Serum and Junt were both absolute killer EPs, and the Shred album was also on our list of the best releases of 2016, so we're pretty psyched about this new single, the curiously named 2012. The opening "Kordman Return (Swing mix)" is Skee Mask up to his naughty break sampling and techno wizardry, all broken and loose, whereas "Palo Alto" sees the producer in a surprisingly sturdy, head-first mood driven by solid bursts of 4/4 and wondrous synths. Over on the B-side, "Fjorward Flex Dub" swings its mighty swarms of drums over a minimal flurry of melodies, in what feels like a sublime reinterpretation of heavy, 90s power-house; "Glass Museum" closes with a real twist thanks to an abstract, wide-eyed landscape of dissolving, jazzed-out percussion and moody ambience. Excellent material, as per usual.

  4. Wet (House Of Black Lanterns remix)
Review: Skubi steps into the limelight with his debut release for Modern Ruin, an imprint reserved strictly for the finest in footwork killers. "Brain Music" is basically a modern hip-hop lick with cavernous low-ends and that familiar juke vocal stutter. The same goes for "Wet", a relatively darker, dreamier sort of affair. Remixes comes from none other than Slick Shoota and House Of Black Lanterns, the former opting for a jungle swing while the latter twists and funks that juke into an even nuttier bundle of drums and percussion. Large.

  5. Frig (1:21)
  6. Wind/Water (4:02)
Review: Fiery dynamics abound as Detroit's Snakepiss delivers a caustic six track document. Ranging from the paranoid and intense overlapping vocal samples of the angst-ridden "Blaze" to the slow-and-steady tribal thunder of "Our Love", each cut reveals a different shade of Snakepiss's sonic personality. There's anger here, but it's displayed conservatively and creatively; "Set Fire To The Living", for example, is an icy slice of electro that develops into such a rich groove you can't avoid the heat. The vocal texture on "Frig", meanwhile, sounds as if the devil has been sampled himself... And wrapped around a meditative cosmic sermon that would sit well in any daring disco set. Strike a light.

Review: Following last year's chest-pressing debut album A Music Of Sound Systems, Infrasonics scientist Spatial returns to Never Ready with two blistering originals that flex around the broken and 4/4 axis. "Netz Room" is sprung with a fractured grime aesthetic to the rhythm. Icy with just the right amount of drama, this causes commotions in all scenarios. "Hut 6" reminds us of Spatial's technoid mindset with a carefully sculpted deep hypnotic groove. Remix-wise J Tijn gets all fuzzy and broken while Munstac strips things right back and dusts off with a little timpani magic. Singular.

Three sides to his soul, each one armed with different sense of electronic charm from the fluttering arpeggios and yearning vocal texture of "Failed State" to the plucked off-beat almost oriental wilderness of "Flight" by way of the much more rigid instrumental grime banger "Mercurial", Spokes showcases a widescreen spirit that stamps across all the most exciting electronic contexts.

Review: Miguel Gil Tertre dusts off his Strand hat for some glitched-out IDM beat freakery. The title track sets the statement for the whole EP: a chaotic 8-bit brew of frenetic drums and over-layered data textures, it's instant insanity. Dig deeper for an array of weirded out compositions; the 22nd century jazz creativity of "Alvaro" and the mischievous mangled juke-meets-rave styles of "You Need A Friend" and the discordant Apparat-style stretches and bends of "Ana & I". Unique.

Review: Bruk bastions, the CoOp collective were one of the brightest, most exciting musical movements in the early to mid 2000s with their barbed, broken soul take on bass music emanating from Plastic People playing a heavy role in the forms of contemporary house music, dubstep and all things in between. Freshly reformed since a Boiler Room comeback in 2015 and loaded with new affiliates, the ensemble, First Word proudly present their first collective EP. Ranging from the jittering soundclash bashment of "Spartan Riddim" to the sensual Bias-like harp heaven of "Can't Hold It" via the technoid stutters of "2nd Intention", this marks the start of a very exciting new chapter for the CoOp crew.

Review: Having previously worked with SBTRKT, Kanye West, Drake, Jesse Ware and Frank Ocean, amongst others, Sampha is no newcomer. This, though, is the British singer, songwriter and producer's debut album, and it's something of an understated gem. One particularly enthusiastic reviewer called it "an R&B album for the ages"; while that may be pushing it a bit, there's no denying that Process is an impressive collection of tracks. The beats are inventive, the electronics crisp, the samples carefully chosen, and the musical touches pitched just right. At the centre of it all stands Sampha, delivering thoughtful, heartfelt and sometimes poignant lyrics in his wonderfully evocative voice.
