Blowing From Above EP
Cat: EPWR 13EP. Rel: 13 May 24
Blowing From Above (4:41)
I Got You (4:24)
Shades (4:50)
Infinity (4:22)
Review: More funk for your trunk! Brussels most provocative player DJ Elephant Power stampedes back into the mix with more subversive, fully uncategorisable gold. Pick a genre, any genre and we guarantee you won't be thinking of what's here as we gently melt from the nifty ravey breaks the opening title track to the sleepy, woozy tension of the finale cut 'Infinity'. In between we have bumping bewitching house ('I Got You') and strange slow-mo electro ('Shades'). Thinking of sleeping on this? Tusk tusk tusk on you.

If The Glove Fits EP
Cat: LIVITY 064. Rel: 07 May 24
Bloodhound (3:51)
Autumn Layers (4:39)
If The Glove Fits (4:23)
Burndown (3:53)
Review: ...wear it. Words and sounds to live by from Livity Sounds' DJ Polo, who lays down four new ones for the esteemed Bristol dance label. Echoing labelmate Ploy's latest output and verging on the tupletting sounds of broken beat and batida, we'd wager lead track 'If The Glove Fits' is a coded nod to the similarly named Hackney nightclub; opener 'Bloodhound', meanwhile, veers towards gqom with its underground pounds and breathy 'haah's. 'Burndown' gets chuggier and less merciful with things and is probably the peaktime tune of the bunch.

DEXT Limited Compilation Vol 1
Cat: DEXTLTD 005. Rel: 15 May 24
K-65 - "Heavyweight" (5:33)
Krotone - "Mashdown" (5:49)
Local Group - "Water Dub" (6:04)
Dawn Razor - "Autopods" (4:58)
Review: The DEXT label serves up a firing Limited Compilation here for its fifth outing and it calls upon several serious bass heads for the beats. K-65's 'Heavyweight' is brilliantly energetic and lithe, with lurching loops and slamming hits, ten bass and twisted vocal stabs. Krotone's 'Mashdown' is a frenzied breakbeat workout with jungle signifiers and trippy melodies, then Local Group's 'Water Dub' slows things down a touch with oscillating low ends and fresh hits all underpinned by dubbed-out bass. Dawn Razor's 'Autopods' shuts down with controlled chaos - the bouncing drums, the rattling hits, the metallic textures and the pinging leads that all make you move every bone in your body.

Red (feat Ossia versions)
Red (feat Ossia versions) (12" limited to 100 copies)
Cat: DAMAGE 003. Rel: 07 May 24
Red (5:08)
Red (Ossia remix version 1) (5:17)
Red (Ossia remix version 2) (5:12)
Review: Lurka is back on his own label Damage which is a place for harder-edged sounds and here includes remixes from Ossia. The one original, 'Red', is a thrilling rhythmic workout with a skeletal kick drum pattern that is broken and loopy, and deft percussion layered in over the top next to wet synths and undulating bass. Ossia's first rework spins it out into a more distorted and manic cut fizzing with static electricity while the second is slightly more paired back but no less menacing. This one has been mastered at Scape in Berlin and is mad limited to just 100 copies so do not wait around.

Wavelord Bizniz EP
Wavelord Bizniz EP (translucent green marbled vinyl 12")
Cat: TIN 055RP. Rel: 16 May 24
Wavelord Bizniz (4:39)
Correct Technique (3:54)
Violent Violin's (2:44)
FrogMob (6:09)
Review: The Time Is Now label single-handed ushered in a new era of garage if you ask us. That was a few years ago but the label continues to lead from the fort here with a new EP from Samurai Breaks & Napes who make their label debut in explosive fashion. They are skilled studio talents who are nudging at the boundaries of the current UK bass sound and here they hybridise bassline, jungle and garage. You won't easily be able to fit these into one stylistic box but they will do damage on the floor, from the ghetto restlessness of the opener to the manic melodies of 'Correct Technique' and onto the turbocharged 'FrogMob'. Thrilling stuff.

When It Rains
Cat: PM 001. Rel: 14 May 24
RPG (feat James K) (6:06)
I Get Such Bad Headaches (2:58)
When It Rains (It Pours) (7:12)
Bad Blood (5:10)
Review: Berlin-based Significant Other presents a brand new platform Pain Management. In the future we can expect artistic missives on multiple media and formats but to launch he's gone old school with this powerful vinyl EP. Heavily textured throughout, across the collection we're taken from stumbling, slo-mo dubby witch house ('When It Rains') to mesmerising, Basic Channel style atmospheres laced with thick foggy charms ('When It Rains') We look forward to more significant dispatches in the future.

Rooms In Time Space
Cat: TOS 007. Rel: 09 May 24
Observatory (7:56)
Junction (5:08)
Bunker (6:02)
Quantum Zone (5:09)
Review: It's sleepy liminal steppers' zones aplenty on Sub Basics' latest full-length for Temple Of Sound, Rooms In Time-Space. As if imagining a purely abstract, extremophilic lifeworld, seed-generated for the pure purpose of headnodding, the latest incarnation of Sub Basics' enduring dubstep sound reflects the artist's unyielding exploration of a certain form, in thrall to which one simply cannot go wrong, provided one has mastered it. With its considered track titles like 'Basement', 'Wilderness', 'Quantum Zone', 'Observatory', 'Nonlinear' and 'Tangent', a detached, stoic, hard-scientific mood is evoked throughout, as if to liken the art of dubstep that of an oblique graphical process, void of emotive distortions. But that's just the front face of the project; deeper listens reveal an abiding humanity behind the beats, an aspect of our being that never tires of such driving broken propulsions, such immersive post-blast movements.

Late Night I Dreamt I Was Alone
Unlucky For Some
Review: After a flurry of announcements and teasers comes Vegyn's latest record The Road To Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions. Arguably more of an aesthetic regrounding compared an long spell of style-establishing wonders, this record hears Joe Thornalley revive his original alias, and is unabashed in its involving of several London-centric all-star vocalists including John Glacier, Matt Maltese, Ethan P. Flynn, Lea Sen and Lauren Auder. All are heard banding together to ruminate on themes of faith, self-acutalization and eternity, together spanning multiple registers and gliding serenely over Vegyn's various dream-jungle, trap, pop and post-everything beats. Even the non-featured tracks contain vocal delights, with highlight 'Everything Is The Same' pitching up what we can only assume to be Vegyn's own, in a glitzed-out take on a Jai Paul-esque beatscape.
