Sticky Beets

Sticky Beets (3:27)
Son! (2:48)
Review: Miami's Far Produce are fresh faces, but their sound is full of respect for times past, building on classic soul jazz by bringing it a modern instrumental twist. Led by two Studio City, CA natives - Addison Rifkind on guitar and Michael Duffy on drums - Fat Produce deliver a veritable cornucopia of fruits and groceries to chew on here. 7" A-sider 'Sticky Beets' turns our inners red, as we're led to imagine chowing down on the perfect beetroot yield and the funky euphoria that inevitably follows ingestion of such a delicacy. B-sider 'Son!', meanwhile, draws on an amalgamation of several Bay Area-inspired grooves - Duffy is a walking rhythmic encyclopaedia - set against an improvised, on-the-fly groove first laid down by Rifkind, whose hook-worthiness is unmistakable here.

Jolene (3:58)
Still As The Night (feat Andie Belle) (3:54)
Review: Long-faced Boston blues trio GA-20 deliver a swampy, bluesy take on Dolly Parton's classic, 'Jolene'. While the original Parton number's lyrics dealt in the instantly-memorable theme of a queen bee stealing the singer's beloved - "just because you can" - the original song could nonetheless be accused of obscuring the melancholic feel of the lyrics, by lending them an uptempo dance backing. GA-20 might be credited with fixing that problem here, stripping things back to a lilting blues plod, convincingly reworked into a vintage, boxy, sepia-toned context.

Boogie Chillen #2 (2:48)
Review: It's hard to comprehend how significant it was when John Lee Hooker first recorded 'Boogie Chillen' in Detroit way, way back in 1948. Once the track was licensed to Modern Records, it went on to sell close to a million copies in the space of a year, at a time when recorded music was still finding its feet, and from that moment on Hooker's legendary status was confirmed until his death in 2001. Now Ace are commemorating 75 years since that landmark song was recorded, capturing two different takes of a track recorded by one man singing his honest truth and creating seismic shifts in popular culture, before such a thing even existed.

Love Is (4:36)
Review: Greg Jolly's 1981 jam 'It's Getting Sweeter' is the subject of this new tidy reissue on US label Enjoy. It's a real deep funk classic that has a lo-fi feel and vocals full of love and passion from both the male lead and the sweet female backers. The chords and drums are gently persuasive and it's a great way to ease yourself into an evening. This 45rpm is backed with 'Love Is' which picks up the pace and has a more funky and propulsive beat with acrobatic falsettos up top finishing it in style.

Sweetheart (2:11)
Loser (3:20)
Review: London's BDQ Records has got more gold here from the superb vocal talent that is Lydia Jane. Her smoky tones come across these two stylish mod-jazz gems starting with the titular 'Sweetheart' which has lazy and slow motion grooves with some lovely reverb-heavy guitar lines reign out next to Jane's sensuous jazz delivery. On the flip is 'Loser' which has a more upbeat feel with 60s tones to the vocals as the swinging drums and feathery snares all add extra depth. A lovely 7" here for fans of all styles of soul.

Monthly Rainfall (4:31)
Review: Spasibo Records present a fresh 7" by the Vicious Seeds, hailing from St. Petersburg. With vibraphonist Pavel Chizhik taking centre stage (Chizhik isn't usually a member of the band), 'Village Hassle' makes for a cleverly collaborative rare groove and instrumental reggae-soul release. The titular A-side flaunts Chizhik's vibraphone via the mix alone, fleshing out its low-end elements against a driven instrumental backbeat; 'Monthly Rainfall', meanwhile, goes for all-out slow-jammed soul by way of cross-sticked snares and offbeat chord plucks run through short-release springs.

Review: Spasibo Records introduces a new 7" vinyl by St. Petersburg outfit the Vicious Seeds, this time on yellow and green wax. In an unconventional move, vibraphonist Pavel Chizhik takes the spotlight and the result is that he truly enhances the band's signature sound. 'Village Hassle' offers a unique blend of rare groove and instrumental reggae-soul - the A-side highlights Chizhik's vibraphone prowess, intertwining it with a dynamic instrumental backbeat. On the flip side, 'Monthly Rainfall' delves into a soulful journey, characterized by cross-sticked snares and offbeat chord plucks which create an atmosphere reminiscent of slow-jammed soul with a contemporary twist.

Review: The Black Keys singer and guitarist Dan Auerbach released his critically acclaimed debut solo album back in 2009. It has been hard for fans to find it ever since so now it gets an all new vinyl and CD reissue with this being the limited orange and black marbled version. It comes with new artwork but has been pressed from the original master so all the songs sound as they were intended first time round. They make for an intimate listen that draws on elements of greasy rock & roll as well as some tender blue-eyed soul, and even a hint of bluegrass.

Review: Dan Auerbach is best known for his role in The Black Keys and you only need to give his 2009 solo album the quickest of spins to make the connection. But Keep It Hid is no straight clone of the 'Keys sound, as Auerbach leans in on a scratchy, scuzzy solo outlet for his songwriting. The title track is a sluggish end of the night bar prop, while 'Heartbroken, In Disrepair' doubles down on tripped-out tremolo for a more psychedelic affair than you might normally associate with Auerbach's better-known work. It's a knockout slice of dirty south blues rock given a shot of something spicy - and now it's being repressed as a limited orange and black vinyl with a bonus insert.

Live at The Scala Theatre contains a selection of songs cherry-picked from Bibb's towering history as a musician, infused with the folk and blues tradition with more contemporary sensibilities. "Without a doubt," says Bibb, The Live at The Scala concert was "the most ambitious gig and recording project of my career." The performance features an all-star lineup of musicians including Eric's longtime collaborator, musical director and producer Glen Scott on bass, keys, drums and backing vocals; Olle Linder on drums and acoustic bass; Johan Lindstrom on pedal steel and electric guitar; Christer Lyssarides on electric guitar and mandola; we could go on.

Review: American blues-slanted rock band the Black Crowes put out their second album The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion back in May 1992. It was the first time Marc Ford had featured on lead guitar in place of Jeff Cease who was sacked the year before. It also marked the first time Eddie Harsch joined on keys and set a record at the time for being the first album to feature four rock number ones, and the album itself also climbed to the top spot in the Billboard 200 album chart. Its mix of blues and Southern styles often sees the album being included in lists of the best rock albums of all time.

Summertime Blues (4:34)
Review: There are moments in the spellbinding and often criminally overlooked Blue Cheer anthem, 'Summertime Blues', when it feels like we've descended into the depths of industrial guitar chaos. A cacophony of feedback, growls, and low, rumbling refrains. A pithy reinterpretation of Eddie Cochran's 1958 hit single, here rendered obtuse for the second, decidedly less-radio and commercial-friendly rock 'n' roll generation.

The whole version plays out in a way that's much like we can imagine Jimi Hendrix might have made happen. Grizzled, gritty, fraught and, ultimately, very loud indeed. It's a standout on this triple-A-side of 1967 Blue Cheer demos, three tracks committed to the pantheons when the psychedelic blues and acid rockers were first beginning to focus their energies. But while the aforementioned is the main event, everything here shows why there was so much excitement around them in the first place.

His solo career kicked off in earnest in 2000, and his third album Blues Deluxe arrived in 2003. It gathers together nine covers of blues standards, covering the likes of John Lee Hooker, Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy and Robert Johnson as well as presenting three of his own original compositions. It's a high-end, polished take on the blues rock sound presented by a lifelong devotee, now remastered and repressed on double vinyl.

I Kept These Old Blues absolutely calls back to a golden age of Americana, but Bradley's Irish lilt comes through and entwines with her faithful Southern twang to make for an endlessly charming end result. Her playing is pitch-perfect, stripped to the bone finger-picking all the better to savour the songs and the way they're sung. Don't sleep on this limited coloured vinyl edition of this rough diamond of an album.

Through haunting vocals and poetic lyrics, Brahim shares stories of displacement, longing, and hope, drawing from her experiences as a Sahrawi refugee. Backed by hypnotic rhythms, intricate melodies, and soul-stirring instrumentation, each track creates a rich tapestry of sound which means the record is more than just an album; it's a powerful testament to the human spirit and a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for freedom and justice. Brahim's music resonates deeply, transcending borders and connecting hearts across the globe.

Review: Brian Auger's Oblivion Express was the phoenix that rose from the ashes of sixties combo The Trinity. Fusing R&B, jazz, soul and funk, keyboard maestro Brian Auger created a new breed of music that took the US and the UK by storm. Auger's unique experimentation culminated in rhythm-infused jazz funk that united black and white '70s audiences. The 6 studio albums that make up Complete Oblivion illustrate the group's diverse musical influences and progression, from the 1970 self titled debut's heavy jazz-rock to the jazz fusion, Latin and disco-tinged Reinforcements from 1975 - this process no doubt powered by the group's evolving line up, which included guitarists Jim Mullen and Jack Mills, drummers Robbie McIntosh & Steve Ferrone, bassists Barry Dean and Clive Chaman and vocalist Alex Ligertwood.

Now it looks to his KB Blues album which came a year later and was his third session as a Blue Note label leader in the studio of legendary producer Rudy Van Gelder in New Jersey. His signature playing style comes to the fore with Horace Silver on piano, Hank Mobley on tenor saxophone, Doug Watkins on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. The album features their take on Silver's 'Nica's Dream' and Burrell's 'Out for Blood' plus two different takes of Burrell's easy-going 'K.B Blues.' A really swinging set.

Review: Peaky Blinders is a saga that will live on in British cultural folklore long after people stop streaming the show itself. And the legacy of arguably the coolest show to come out of the UK in several years is as much to do with the contemporary stylisation of what's essentially a period piece as it is the attitude it exudes. An atmosphere that's distinctly British, to say the least. A key aspect of the overall impact is the soundtrack, and who better to craft the score to this dark, violent, socially-imbalanced, politically-volatile period in English gangster history than Anna Calvi. The high priestess of alternative, brooding, tense rock & roll plucked straight from the depths of surrealism, every pluck and chord seems to intensify the overall feeling, seducing us with a combination of breathy spoken word, operatic contralto, and tense virtuoso guitar playing.

Review: .If the aim of any commissioned soundtrack score is to provide music that enhances and emphasises the on-screen action, then Anna Calvi's work on BBC smash Peaky Blinders is up there with the best of them. While Calvi only provided soundtracks to two seasons - five and six, both of which are presented on this limited double-disc release - the distinctive sound worlds she created suited series' dark and stylish visual tone. All low-slung basslines, dystopian effects, snarling riffs and squally, stretched-out guitar solos, the collected instrumentals stand on their own two feet while naturally conjuring up mental glimpses of key scenes for those who watched and loved the award-winning series.

Review: Before we even get to the music, shall we talk about this album title? Easily up there with the best named records of all time, thankfully this is matched in the quality of the music itself. All-British blues rock 'n' roll at its grittiest and funkiest, and most musically impressive. A showcase of exquisite guitar and piano work, and songwriting, marks the debut of Chicken Shack, the group founded by Stan Webb, Andy Silvester, and Alan Morley, who also enlisted Christine Perfect, later Fleetwood Mac's Christine McVie. Comprising ten predominantly rather short tracks (most are around three minutes), this format only leaves us wanting more as the record plays out. There's the classic heartbroken ode 'Lonesome Whistle Blues', the fraught six string solos of 'See See Baby', and the rowdy bar-in-a-track that is 'San Ho Zay' to get you started, but really everything on here is gold.

Review: As part of Atlantic Records' 75th Anniversary celebration, the label has launched an extensive year-long vinyl series featuring 90 releases spanning the entire history of the company, from its earliest days until the present. Of these emerges this latest reissue of Crosby, Stills & Nash's self-titled debut album, first released on the label all the way back in 1969. The album features some of CSN's most well known and iconic songs; 'Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,' 'Marrakesh Express,' 'Guinnevere,' 'Wooden Ships,' 'Helplessly Hoping' and 'Long Time Gone.' This album saw a shift in sound to what was popular at the time - blues based rock - opting for a more folk rock, and sometimes jazz-based sound. It would lay the foundations for the California Sound that would be popularised out of Laurel Canyon in the '70s. Artists such as The Eagles, Jackson Browne and Fleetwood Mac would take inspiration from the sound of this record.

Review: Karen Dalton is one of the most mysterious and enigmatic but also influential artists of her time. Her 1971 album In My Own Time is a real masterpiece that Light In The Attic now presented on newly mastered vinyl. It was originally recorded over a six month time frame at Bearsville and was crafted by producer and musician Harvey Brooks, a key figure in rock-jazz having worked on Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited and Miles' Bitches Brew. It's a wild and vivid record with walking basslines and manic melodies topped off with the expressive vocals.

Review: Danielle Nicole shares her debut album on Forty Below: The Love You Bleed. From its earliest recording sessions, Nicole knew this one would be different; for the first time, the whole twelve-track repertoire is about falling in love, not the fallout of it. Produced by Tony Braunagel (Taj Mahal, Eric Burdon, Robert Cray) and mixed by John Porter (B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Bryan Ferry), The Love You Bleed is an album-length sentimental ballad; full of love, loss, will, determination, and every residual ingredient of love. But that's not to say the album doesn't get sour with it; while lead single 'Make Love' is about consciously pushing past pain - choosing love, family, and community in life's difficult moments - 'How Did We Get To Goodbye' hits the listener quicker with its raw and twinging lyrics, documenting a soured love that bears no hero or villain, and asking how one might reach such a place of disrepair without even knowing it.

Review: 'The Montreux Years' was a period of time in which legendary American singer, songwriter and pianist Dr. John - who blended blues, jazz, funk, rock and roll and New Orleans music - held wide renown as a staple of the Swiss Montreux Jazz Festival for a solid two-decade juncture, between 1973 and 1995. This album captures his tenure at the festival over the years, and features live recordings from his performances, as well as two previously unreleased tracks. Both a celebration of the work of Dr. John and the European jazz festival, it's certainly not one to be missed.

Review: Ernie Story's Meditation Blue is a catnip record for serious collectors. Many have longed for it to be reissued and made more readily available and now they get the wish thanks to Japan's Groove Diggers series on P-Vine. This was originally a private press record which explains its scarcity after it was recorded in 1997 in Minneapolis as the one and only album by the singer-songwriter and producer Ernie Story. It's a seamless fusion AOR meets modern soul with laidback grooves and a hint of gospel to really elevate it. A must-own record for soul collectors with plenty of emotional high points.

Review: The long lost 1968 debut album by singer-songwriter Scott Fagan, South Atlantic Blues, comes reissued for the first time in its original artwork, with an iconic portrait of Fagan by famed rock photographer Joel Brodsky, following a widely celebrated 2015 release. Revisiting his mystical, mythical, and deeply soulful masterpiece, this psych-folk gem doffs a Tropicalia hat direct from downtown New York. Fagan's story is worthy of a movie in itself. A swinging hipster who landed in 60s Greenwich folk scene, escaping the abject poverty of his U.S. Virgin Islands upbringing, Fagan found himself mentored by the Brill Building's Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, and feted as the next big thing. "Forget Rodriguez, forget Searching for Sugar Man," says Sharyn Felder, daughter of the late Doc Pomus, the legendary songwriter who signed Fagan to management in 1964. "Scott was so much more. He was cut from a different cloth." South Atlantic Blues is the perfect soundtrack to this tale, an epic song cycle wrapped around an impassioned love story, driven by Fagan's dense, allusive lyrics, and production by Elmer Jared Gordon (Pearls Before Swine) and rich arrangements by Horace Ott (Nina Simone, Sam Cooke, The Shirelles).

Review: Robert Finley returns for a new album of his distinctive Louisiana blues style. Having devoted himself to music more fully after losing his sight at 60 and now boasting an incredible catalogue of albums behind him, Finley's recent life story is a marvel in itself, but as Black Bayou proves his tales only deepen the further back you go. Drawing on early memories such as the nerve-racking story 'Alligator Bait', Finley lays down one of his most direct albums to date. It was written and recorded in situ at Dan Auerbach's Easy Eye Sound Studio in Nashville, and it captures the raw honesty of music made in the moment, from the heart, with a dirty Southern crunch to the production you'll never tire of.

Singer Paul Rodgers was the man responsible for getting together with guitarist Jimmy Page and the group became one of the most successful rock outfits of their era. They released a brace of brilliant albums - the self-titled debut in 1985, then a year later Mean Business - and played across the UK and US in the years after. One of the best shows they did was at the Oakland Coliseum on 15th March. Their extraordinary energy and fine set list was recorded for live FM Radio Broadcast and now you can listen back to the whole thing on vinyl for the first time ever.

Review: Tommy Guerrero's sublime debut album Loose Grooves And Bastard Blues carved out his name as a musician, and followed hot on the heels of an already established skateboarding career. It's not often we can name an artist whose talents lend just as well to the axe as they do to the deck, but it's plain to see on this insouciant jazz/bossa nova collection: Guerrero is one dextrous bloke. With the skate career held firmly in mind, we can easily imagine these numbers as the backing cuts to a fish-eyed trickstyle video; it's a great testament to the pure joy of music-making too, with Guerrero insisting: "it was never meant to be released. I was just recording for the fun of it - still my fave. Oh so naive!"

Review: Guitarist, composer and skateboarder Tommy Guerrero hears several of his earliest albums reissued now via Be With, of which 2008's Return Of The Bastard was his fifth. Still evidently deep in the throes of recording for the pure fun of it, this fifteen-track album reflects a pure lyricless enjoyment that few other of Guerrero's contemporaries could ever hope to share. Perhaps it's the meditative truck of his earlier skate career that course-corrected his frame of mind to pure creative meditativeness; here driving noisy drum machines, lightly-amped two-tones, the occasional kalimba and faint vocals all collide for the perfect accompaniment to an implied visual narrative.

Review: Two brothers recently reunited by their love of music, the Hermanos Gutierrez make beautiful instrumental Latin and Americana, tempered by the aesthetic of atmospheric Western movie soundtracks a-la Ennio Morricone and/or film director Sergio Leone. On their new album El Bueno Y El Malo, a give-and-take, equitable atmsphere - shared lovingly between two chordophonal kin - is established on every track. Soft, spatious and tinged with the analogous, skippy texture of the vinyl record, even the album's forays into pop structures ('La Verdad', 'Tres Hermanos') don't waver from their warmth, nor do they sacrifice an ounce of sweet listenability.

Review: This is a re-release of the 1989 album The Healer by American blues guitarist and singer John Lee Hooker, one of the more influential figures in 20th Century blues music. Through a series of smoke-filled, devilish blues jams - charting collaborations with the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Carlos Santana, George Thorogood, Los Lobos, Canned Heat, Charlie Musselwhite and Robert Cray - the album is an enduring critical success, owing to its high-quality recordings and collaborative spirit. All of these factors in tandem seem to get at something much deeper and out-there than the mere sum of its parts, with Hooker's vocals on the famous duet 'I'm In The Mood' sounding almost alien, indistinct.

Now collected in its entirety across a double LP set, the album contains 11 live originals; raw and intimate blues takes on the likes of 'Crawlin' King Snake', 'Boogie Chillen' and 'One Bourbon One Scotch One Beer', along with brand new artwork and liner notes by Kent Cooper. It's a studio album that has been praised by modern comic Stewart lee who called the nine minute epic 'How Many More Years You Gonna Dog Me 'Round?' "superb." The rest of the tracks are heavy on the horns from George Bohanon and Oscar Brashear and have plenty of backing vocal action with the likes of Robert Hooker also playing plenty of big organ parts. These are all long jams that really take you on a trip - with plenty of standouts.

Thus the only album Hooker made for the label, we hear Hooker perform in exquisite, stereo-surrounded detail here, his distinctive deep drawl poking through a wide-mixed production palette and singing thematically in a vindictive spirit, urging the subject of the album to get up and move on from the past. With Panama Francis on drums, Milt Hinton on bass and Barry Galbraith on second guitar, the album is some of the best John Lee Hooker material with a band that you're likely to come across.

Originally released in 1962, Howling Wolf Sings The Blues gathered together eight songs originally recorded for Modern Records in the early 50s as well as further instrumentals by Joe Hill Louis. It's a classic era for a true blues legend, right up there with his fabled Chess sessions recorded a few years later.

It is often said to be a masterpiece of the era and is one of Ike and Tina's most blues-orientated albums. It came during the revival of those sounds in the 60s when bands like The Rolling Stones were obsessed with biting on the first wave of blues greats. The Hunter leads heavily on the Stax sound of the era with producer Bob Krasnow keeping things clean and simple. Electric blues guitarist Albert Collins features prominently through the nine classic tunes.

Review: Blues great Elmore James was known for a couple of things, musically at least. King of the slide guitar, his penchant for the instrument is obvious. Meanwhile, his love of playing loud, in turn getting the most out of that powerhouse voice, is perhaps less apparent when listening now, 60 years after his death. A Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-r since 1992, his backing band would eventually comprise two musicians who played with the legendary Tampa Red, whose songs James also had a habit of recording. Blues After Hours is certainly definitive James stuff, a raw, drawly, barroom of a record that sees the artist and his accompaniment invoke memories, borrowed and owned, of hot evenings in Deep South bars. Sadly lost long before his time, dying from a heart attack in 1963, just days before a European tour that would have catapulted his name globally, this is a fantastic memento of true legend.

Wait Til I Get Over is a highly personal record which finds Jones digging deep into his roots growing up in Louisiana, reflecting on his ancestry and delivering a potent black music which draws on gospel, rock n' roll and soul and pushes those fundamentals into exciting new places. It's a record to feel with every fibre of your body, with Jones' grit-edged but oh-so-sweet voice at the centre.

Review: Leslie Johnson came through in the blues breakout years of the 50s and 60s, releasing a whole batch of tracks for Nashville label Excello, before an extended hiatus kept him off the radar until the late 1980s. The second wave of his career as Lazy Lester continued right up until his death in 2018, and in the midst of that came All Over You. It's a perfect document of Johnson's more grizzled, road-worn sound in his later years, which in many ways adds weight to his offerings to the blues as a lifelong exponent of the music. This 25th anniversary edition of the album comes as a limited orange and blue splattered pressing with an obi-strip on the sleeve for good measure.

Originally dropped back in 1972, Macale's debut effortlessly blends Brazilian folk, samba, and experimental rock while showcasing his uniquely eclectic musical vision. The album's raw energy and poetic lyricism reflect the tumultuous political climate of its time and as well as resonating with audiences then it will do so again now. Macale's soulful vocals and innovative guitar work shine throughout, while the arrangements are both intimate and expansive and each track captivates with its depth and emotion.

Review: Gary Moore is the Irish guitarist best known for his prior involvement with Thin Lizzy, but the 1995 album Blues For Greeny netted comparatively little recognition for him. Needless to say, that's not what makes a great album, and this one's the opposite of a fame-seeking project anyway - amounting to a tribute album to his musical hero, Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac. All the tracks here adapt Green's originally written songs with finger-noodly flair, with the added help of Kinks bassist Andy Pyle to boot.

Review: As you will no doubt know if you are reading this, Mountain's debut album is a seminal piece of hard rock history that was released in 1970. Led by guitar virtuoso Leslie West and featuring the powerhouse vocals of Felix Pappalardi, the album delivers a thunderous blend of blues, psychedelia, and heavy riffs. Tracks like 'Mississippi Queen' and 'Theme for an Imaginary Western' showcase the band's dynamic range and undeniable musicianship. Elsewhere, the record's gritty production and infectious energy helped to establish Mountain as pioneers of the hard rock genre and an influencer on countless bands to come. It remains a timeless classic, rightfully lauded for its raw power.

Let's Talk offers bonus tracks and previously unreleased alternate mixes that all add up to a collection of unabashedly sincere songs with a nice authentic and lo-fi aesthetic. Review: Philip Sayce's highly anticipated new album, The Wolves Are Coming, is more powerful, unique, and brash than anything he has written or recorded to date. In Sayce's own words, the album came into focus during his darkest times, and represents a bridge - a connection between despair and hope - that invites broken spirits into transformation and healing. The likes of 'Oh! That Bitches Brew' and 'Backstabber' hit like hurricanes, while 'Lady Love Divine' explores light in contrast to darkness, deploying an uplifting, foot-stomping funk groove that lands its hooks in all the right places. Ballads like 'It's Over Now' and the magical instrumental 'Intuition' round out Sayce's signature fuzz tones and sledgehammer mountain- sized drum grooves with delicate, intimate, and dynamic performances.

Review: Nina Simone has rather been written out of popular music history because of quite how confrontational and proudly Black she was. She was just as far ahead of her times musically too and this legendary album Baltimore shows why. It arrived with no promotion and no lead singles and so it was an utter commercial failure, but the sleuths of the internet have rediscovered it over the 45 years since its release and helped to make it a cult favourite now regarded as one of the best in her oeuvre. It has distinctive reggae production and of course plenty of beautiful vocals from Simone as she tackles songs written by Judy Collins, Hall & Oates, and Randy Newman.

Review: American roots/blues multi-instrumental legend Taj Mahal pays tribute to the swing era and its artists on his latest album Savoy, laying down a string of covers of classics by the likes of Duke Ellington, Louis Jordan, George Gershwin and others. Titularly referencing the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, where Taj Mahal's parents met for the first time, this is an album that straddles jovialty and sentimentality in both sound and theme.
