Toxic Funk Vol 8
Cat: BBP 204. Rel: 26 Jan 23
Second Warning (3:37)
Let The Music Play (3:44)
Review: The Breakbeat Paradise label rolls out another one in its well regarded Toxic Funk series here and both tunes pack some serious dance floor heat. It is producer duo Suckaside along with LROY who bring the good times here with classic soul and funk mixed with just enough beats and breaks to make it sound current. LROY first offer the big soul groover 'Second Warning' with boom bap beats and lush vocals. On the flipside Suckaside aka Sucka Timmy and DJ B-side offer a take on Shannon's cult 'Let the Music Play' with some big hitting electronic funk.

Hang On The City (3:58)
The Funk Is Yours (4:08)
Review: Breakbeat Paradise invites back onto their island once more for a tenth volume of the on going Toxic Funk series. This is another vital 45rpm for DJs which will blow up any spot with b-boy sounds and edgy breaks. 'Hang On The City' offers up some tightly woven in, Kendrick-like bars while on the flip, 'The Funk Is Yours' is a more coruscated and disco tinged tune with a searing bassline and mid tempo drum loops as well as retro rap vocals and lively yelps.

Scoundrel (4:53)
Gangster In Disguise (5:52)
Lemurian Blues (5:46)
Review: If the name of the label (Mental Disorder) wasn't indication enough, then we'll fill you in: this collaboration between Reeko and Surgeon is the absolute bees knees, at least when it comes to music that maddens. Like a sort of fucked-up marriage of Techno Animal and Terry Riley, the tracks on this short three-tracker by the stirling pair excel at conveying both suspense and minimalism. 'Scoundrel' swerves at a higher tempo, carefully note-adding a crossrhythmic bassline that sounds like a metallic dog chewing on cud. 'Lemurian Blues', meanwhile, echoically places a kick on every eighth note, eschewing the conventions of 4x4 techno for a space-ambient nightdrive. For those liking their dance music a little bit weirder, this is it.

Get My Gruv (5:17)
Cyberrave (4:35)
Serious Talking (4:44)
Review: ScruScru is a name you might well recognise but it is fair to say you might not recognise his work on this first release from Talkbox. He shows a very different side off the back of plenty of top edits that bottle up plenty of disco and Bossanova vibes. Here he has teamed up with Russia's dubplate don BR Selecta for an EP full of energy and joy. 'YEAH YEAH' is happy-go-lucky garage with pitched-up vocals and lively drum, 'Get My Gruv' is a kinetic two-stepper and 'Cyberrave' is just that with its all-out synth madness and flurries of breaks, then 'Serious Talking' closes out on a darker jungle tip. A varied and vital 12' for sure.

State Of Flow (Armec remix)
Review: Following up that excellent Synchronicity on EP Phonica AM a couple of months back, hero of the Birmingham scene Subb An returns with more underground quality with this new one on the mighty 20/20 Vision. 'State Of Flow' is an emotive and breathtaking affair that's equal parts acid, progressive breaks and UK tech house with a seething Reese bassline lurking throughout that underpins angelic vocals. Over on the flip, remixes come from Adam Pits who takes you beyond the strobelights to reach for the lasers on his ravey take, followed by Armec's menacing experimental techno rework.

Review: Denver dark lords Trisicloplox and Sectra gear up for DNO's 10th release with four uncompromising schematics the flex across the IDM / electro spectrum. Taking two tracks apiece, the pair lay down some stern sonics; 'Mail Theft' is a steppy piece of pulsating rattler, 'Bruised' is a slow-mo stomp-out, 'Megastructure' has that industrial funk swagger while 'Dead On Arrival' brings us to an apocalyptic conclusion with rasping acid and brittle, swinging two-step breakbeats. Dead or alive these structures are coming with us.

Story From Plovdiv (2:28)
My Song (2:33)
Review: Bulgarian DJ, Producer and Rapper Skill marks Soul Dynamite's 11th release (his fourth contribution to the fast-growing 45s label). containing four songs of pure hip-hop greatness, Side A will appeal to fans of Hideki Naganuma, Fatboy Slim and other pure hip-hop producers and DJs, and with chopped-up vocal samples, incredible scratching and a banging funk instrumental, 'Bulgarian Bboy/Bgirl anthem' really steals the show. Side B's 'Stories from Plovdiv', Skill's hometown, is a mature and laid-back groove that sets up the more gritty and hardcore 'My Song'. Hip-Hop fans have a fantastic niche pull here from Skill, pick up this extremely limited 7" before it's gone.

Review: Bliss Point rolls out another scorcher here with SPF 50 providing no protection from the sun whatsoever but offering up plenty of slick minimal tech to get excited about. 'Body Concept' is the wonky and rugged opener with clattering drum hits and busted bass over hustling rhythms. 'Liquid USB' is another mix of deft synths and innovative off-beat grooves. Things get more deep and dubby on 'Grove Map' which sinks you way under the surface of the sea and 'Iris' (Bad Water version) is another sub-aquatic sound with frosty dub chords and compelling rhythms.

Millenium Sound (Selway New Millenium version) (6:05)
Millenium Sound (Sync 24 remix) (5:03)
Millenium Sound (Transparent Sound remix) (7:22)
Review: Way back in 1998, New York techno scene stalwart John Selway opened his Zoids Volume 2 EP with a quirky chunk of razor-sharp, acid-fired electro called 'Millennium Sound'. On the eve of its 25th birthday, Selway has decided to get the track remixed by some serious electro talents. Keith Tenniswood kicks things off as Radioactive Man, offering a fiendishly sub0heavy, alien-sounding electro rub that's guaranteed to put extra pressure on bassbins and sub cabinets, before Selway himself re-frames the cut as a moody, foreboding chunk of sci-fi electro excellence. Over on the flip, Sync 24 delivers a more percussively intense and weighty dark electro roller, while Transparent Sound joins the dots between classic 80s electro and the cybernetic moodiness of Selway's 1998 mix.

Kauris 1979 (Feel Fly Piano Emozione remix) (0:49)
Review: Night Vibez first outing on vinyl is a limited affair, with only 200 copies available worldwide. It sees Steb join forces with Dario Rossi for 'Karius 1979', a shimmering, impactful late-night number that giddily blurs the boundaries between sci-fi deep house, trippy nu-disco, and strobe-lit Italo-disco of the sort more associated with basements in The Hague than open-air clubs in Italy. Van Der Kirche and THC kick-start the accompanying remix package with a bouncy, stab-happy breakbeat take that sounds like it could have been recorded in 1990 or 91, before big guns Marvin & Guy re-frame it as a throbbing Chic-meets-Italo-disco workout. To round things off, the Feel Fly 'Piano Emozione' mix is a dreamy, piano-laden trance number that recalls the mid-90s excellence of Robert Miles.

Tangerine Train (Runaway Train beats) (5:02)
Tangerine Train (Lost In A Tunnel Of dub mix) (7:48)
Tangerine Train (Last Acid Train To Euphoria mix) (7:26)
Review: For their latest deep dive into house history, the dusty-fingered sonic archelogists behind the Mint Condition imprint have delved into the mid-90s catalogue of San Francisco producer turned sound designer Safar Bake. 'Tangerine Train' first appeared on the tiny Aqua Boogie Records imprint in 1996 and in recent years has become something of an in-demand collectible. This reissue boasts all four mixes from the original 12": the hypnotic, acid-flecked deep house/early deep house fusion of the 'Absolute Runaway Train Mix', the densely layered, pots-and-pans percussion of the 'Runaway Train Beats' version (an insanely good mixing tool), the smooth, organ-based powered deepness of the 'Lost In a Tunnel of Dub Mix', and the pleasingly wild, roughneck, mind-mangling hedonism of the brilliant 'Last Acid Train To Euphoria Mix'.

Review: When it comes to excitable club fodder rooted in club sounds of the late 80s and 90s, the Tone Dropout crew consistently delivers the goods. They're at it again on their 11th multi-artist extravaganza, which giddily sprints between acid-fired breakbeat house with glassy-eyed melodic motifs and spacey bleeps (Sween and Alphonse hook-up 'Downfall'), trancey early progressive house revivalism ('Odyssey T3D' by XOTR), intergalactic electro-bleep fusion (the punchy, Kraftwerk-on-pills excellence of Samuel Padden's 'Teslas Still Alive') and classy bleep and breaks nostalgia (Kostas G's pleasingly sub-heavy, funk break-driven 'Spectrum').

Review: Bitterfeld continues to blaze its own electro trail with a seventh outing that again its top draw. This one is a various artistic collection under the title For A Bitter Tomorrow: Band 2 and opens up with Salomo's 'Bodytalk', a crisp and ice cold electro rhythm before Interviews bathe you in gloriously deft sci-fi melodies on 'Let Go' and Qwerty's 'Kisela Neman' then brings some madness with crashing hits and molten acid lines. Jonbjorn's 'Chica' closes with similarly high impact electro sounds and raw textures.

Review: Just because you pretty much know what to expect from a new release by See Mask on Munich label Ilian Tape - which in fact has its own 'Skee Series' sub-label dedicated to this artist - doesn't mean it is n't well worth having. This ninth volume in the on going project is another full of innovative breakbeats and stylish techno. 'UWLSD' is rather deft and delicate in the way it pirouttes around shuffling drums. There is also the raw slap funk of 'Studio 626' and bulkier, more shadowy breakbeats on 'Reviver'. 'Bandprobe Dub' closes in lithe and thrilling fashion.

Review: Gooey Editz is launching a new sub-series here and Siggatunez is behind the first limited 12". 'Live CUtz' has four tunes that are all designed to shake up the floor. 'Gettin' Love' is raw, percussive house with bright melodies and a sense of celebration. 'Movin' On' slips into a deeper realm with more moody synths and pulsing bass and 'By Your Side' brings a gorgeous pitched-up Erykah Badu vocal over punchy broken beats that take you to the next level. Last of all is 'Trust Me', a steamy and densely layer house track with intense keys, jazzy chords and vocals.

Review: It's time to clock up more Air Miles here as the small but well-formed label invites Supreems for another excursion into emotional yet robust breakbeats. 'Being' floats above the dancefloor on perfect frictionless drum loops that lurch to and fro and 'Touch' is a deep space trip with pensive cosmic pads and delightfully delicate but dynamic breaks. There is more weight and crispy texture to the zoned out sounds of 'Running Back', then 'Soft Spring' brings a heart aching female vocal to a loose cluster of beats, breaks, hits and churchy chords. 'Yunnan' shuts things down with a dark yet alluring energy. There is great craft in these cuts as well as plenty of dancefloor clout.

Rogue Transmissions
Dawn Goddess
Review: It has been four years since the often leftfield LMD dropped new music but thankfully the once well-regarded label is back with some top-notch sounds, this time from Shaun Soomro. The London-based artist draws on all the music he grew up with from drum & bass and UK garage to the psychedelic sounds of Pink Floyd. Hints of all that features here is a painterly EP with smeared synths and dusty breaks sinking you in deep on cuts like 'No Thrill, No Joy.' 'Rogue Transmissions' is a smoother, more hypnotic and dubbed out house roller still with some wonderful synth work to gaze at while 'Aquaplaning On The Secret Freeway' is the sort of journeying transition track to take things up a notch.

Review: Magnonic Signal label boss Spin Fidelity aka Antonio Velazquez is well known for his techno outings Subwax Excursions and Parang Recordings. Here he lends his consider skills to a fourth release from the Brussels label Nightflight Records. There is some glistening old school jack and cosmic synth work on opener 'Photon Stream' that gets you locked in from the off. Closing out a hugely varied EP is the trippy acid and melodic workout that is 'Magnonic Transmission.'

Review: Barcelona-based producer Sanandreas offers an intriguing take on dreamatic dance music with the 'Lun' EP, indulging emotions few dance music producers dare to tread these days. The title track, for example, opts for a two-tone lilt backed up by breaks and FM bass knocks, which are rapidly and generatively varied across the track's skeleton body. Things crow effortlessly breaksier on follower-uppers 'The Core' and 'Reminiscence (Blunt Mix)', while a full stooping in beatless heaven-ambience is heard on the ensuing 'Sunrise Mix'. An overall impressive EP, Sanandreas succeeds in recalling the astral oeuvre of mid-90s psych-breaks, but with a modern twist.

Review: A decade after establishing their Feel My Bicep label, Bicep continue to showcase the work of talented producers, many born and raised on the island of Ireland. They're at it again here, offering up a fantastic four-tracker from Shine Belfast resident Swoose. Title track 'Breathe' is gorgeousness personified - an immersive, tactile and wide-eyed slab of sunrise-ready deep house colour rich in kaleidoscopic chords, shuffling breakbeats, deep bass and ear-pleasing lead lines. On 'Hyphae', Swoose doffs a cap to vintage Orbital releases, peppering an early-to-mid-90s UK techno groove with gorgeous melodies and even more picturesque pads. The accompanying remixes are excellent, too, with Kessler's breakbeat hardcore-goes-deep house tweak of 'Breathe', and Peach's rubbery, near 140 BPM rework of 'Hyphae' both hitting the spot.
