Pointbreak
Pointbreak (limited blue vinyl 7")
Cat: FCB 130B. Rel: 08 Jan 24
Pointbreak (2:55)
Surfin' Summer (3:18)
Remember (3:12)
Breeze (3:16)
Review: Cold Busted ventures into downtempo and Balearic territory here with Vanilla offering up a limited but 7" full of hazy and lo-fi beat sketches that make you ache for a sun lounger and a warm day. The gentle beats of 'Pointbreak' are offset by wonky and detuned chords that bring a sense of irreverence and 'Surfin' Summer' then casts you adrift on nice lazy sax motifs. 'Remember' keeps the grooves slow and low and 'Breeze' shuts down with another cathartic and open-skied sonic excursion. A perfect accompaniment to some mental escapism, then.

Tom's Garage (Hulk Hodn remix) (2:07)
Into The Blue (Footshooter remix) (6:55)
Pose (Frits Wentink remix) (4:52)
Luminate (20/100 remix) (6:36)
Review: Velour's much loved album on Wolf Music gets the full remix treatment here. Four of the cuts get reworked by label associates old and new and it is mainstay Hulk Hodn who goes first. His take on 'Tom's Garage' is a noodling chords and late night seduction. South London's Footshooter then brings some big broken beat work and swirling synths to a floor facing jam, and Frits Wentink follows up his big recent Dekmantel release with a high energy stomper that bubbles with dreamy vocal charm. Last of all is super cool and jazz heavy 20/100 remix of 'Luminate' that is space age, Detroit tinged, sunset house.

Walpataca - "Caliente" (5:27)
Vienna Art Orchestra - "Un Poco Loco" (6:44)
Review: Paul Murphy's Jazz Room Records serve up two underground dance floor hits from the London circuit here. Latin supergroup Wild And Infectious's 'Caliente' takes care of the a-side and has banging piano riffs and heavy bass laid down by Descarga originator Cachao, all run through with some superb driving vibes from Tany Gil with a big percussion meltdown from Walfredo De Los Reyes added for good measure. ON the reverse, The Vienna Art Orchestra serve up a great new version of a Bud Powell classic.

Review: Is there any more revered digger than Antal, the rush Hour label boss? he has made that label and shop famous around the world for its great and eclectic taste. He has also reinvigorated the catalogues of numerous artists thanks to playing their tunes in his expansive sets so whenever he serves up a comp it's pretty much a buy on sight. Beyond Spec & Time Volume 2 jin the Japanese label of the same names one such example - it's full of broken beat and jazzy treasure that is invigorates the soul and more than makes you want to dance.

Lillygood Party Vol 2 (gatefold 2xLP)

The Elements Of Life - "Children Of The World" (feat Josh Milan - Ben Brophy edit) (12:29)

Mausiki Scales - "Freedom Flight" (6:48)
Universal Tongues - "Open Up Your Mind" (feat Elle - Honeycomb vocal mix) (8:43)
MJ Lallo - "Star Child Going Home" (4:45)
Review: Veteran producer, selector and all round champion of impeccable grooves Alex Attias is back on BBE with a second volume of his "Lillygood Party" collection. These are some seriously tasteful jams skirting house but with an emphasis on soul. Peven Everett sounds resplendent on Stacy Kidd's "How Bad I Want Ya" while The Elements Of Life's "Children Of The World" is a soaring slice of jazz funk strapped to a smooth house beat. There's even Pharoah Sanders jamming his sax over a peppy rhythm section and spiritually charged house meanderings from Universal Tongues featuring Elle. It's a collection that surprises and satisfies at every turn.

Review: The traditonal way to start a review of any Micko Westmoreland release - and with as is to point out that he's best known for playing Jack Fairey in the mock glam documentary Velvet Goldmine, but with a second strong album in his new, flanked -by-legends incarnation and some highly memorable video promos featuring a succession of alternativ ecomedy greats, that could well be changing. Expect spiky English podst-punk songwriting a la XTC or even Pulp, with recent singles 'Autosexual' and 'What's In A Name' (which includes guest vocals from Kevin Eldon numbering among the highligths.

Review: For their first foray into the mix market following the conclusion of their original, 100-volume series, London superclub Fabric has decided to offer up a rare DJ mix from genre-defying producer Simon Green AKA Bonobo. It's his first mix of any sort since 2013 and it is really rather good. Beautiful, picturesque, melodious and fluid, the mix not only includes heaps of previously unheard material from the man himself, but also touches on a dizzying number of styles (most notably ambient, loved-up deep house, African and South American drum music, IDM, electronica, techno, electro-soul, broken beat and dreamy breaks). That it all hangs together brilliantly is testament to Green's impeccable DJing and production skills.

Peter & Kerry - "One Thing"
Eddie Front - "Gigantic"
Bill Evans - "Peace Piece"
Benedict Cumberbatch - "Flat Of Angels" (part 3 - exclusive Spoken Word piece)
Review: Given his impeccable downtempo credentials, you'd expect Bonobo's Late Night Tales mix to be one of the finer installments in the series (and that's saying something). Predictably, it is. Sweet, sensual and atmospheric, with plenty of unlikely gems and forgotten classics for the heads to enjoy, it surprises and impresses with each successive track. This vinyl edition features 17 of the tracks unmixed (naturally) and lifts out many highlights. His own cover of Donovan's "Get Thy Bearings" is particularly revelatory - string drenched, hazy, atmospheric and, of course, immaculately produced - but there are many other gems. Check Darondo's classic heart breaker "Didn't I," the smoky reggae-soul of Nina Simone's "Baltimore", and the enveloping intimacy of Shlohmo's "Places". Do seek out Benny Cumberbatch's spoken word turn at the end too! (mp3 download code for the full release included).

Review: Batov Records label co-founder DJ Kobayashi has dug deep in his back catalogue of Middle Eastern grooves for this superb double album. The tracks span 2015 to now and are taken from the label's well received series of 7" singles released under the same name. There are new tunes, edits of classic, never before heard gems and plenty in between, all of which have made their way into the bags of adventurous DJs from Gilles Peterson to Gideon Coe. There is desert funk, cosmic star gazing, shamanistic funk, spooky synth sounds and plenty more here that will improve your record collection by a guaranteed 76%.

It shows there evolution of his style across the selections as he serves up his unique reinterpretations of traditional music in his own electronic-organic style. Along the way, he tackles Galician, Estonian, Colombian, Irish, Garifuna, Reunionnaise and French folk music, with the result ranging from club-ready bangers to more pensive and slow psychedelic jams.

Review: Sam Shepherd AKA Floating Points has long been known as a producer, DJ and selector with a staggeringly good record collection. It's for this reason that his edition of "Late Night Tales", a series dedicated to the joys of post-club home listening, has been so eagerly anticipated. The resultant mix is a triumph, with Shepherd showcasing a largely rare and obscure mix of new age ambient, high-grade jazz, sumptuous folk-soul (see Abu Talib's impeccable "Blood Of An American"), psychedelic soul weirdness, intergalactic jazz-funk, Satie-style piano movements and the drowsy, liquid electronics of Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. The set also includes a handful of exclusive tracks, including a wonderful new Floating Points cover of Kenny Wheeler's "The Sweet Time Suite (Part I - Opening)". In a word: essential.

Review: Piloted by Ibiza-based producer Guts and Los Angeles' crate-digger Mambo, the Beach Diggin' series gleefully gathers together sun lounger-friendly cuts from around the World. While there's always a lazy, sun-ready feel to their selections, they stick closer to soul, funk, disco and boogie than many other like-minded collections. This fourth volume in the series is packed with more obscure, horizontally inclined material from the likes of Sue Barker (not the former tennis player, obviously), Alex Khaoli (the talk box-sporting, electrofunk-era jazz-funk beauty of "Cross Lines"), Brooski (the close-dance sweetness of "This Love"), and Jemaa (the reggae-soul shuffle of "Bob Marley").

Review: Peace and football: not only the best compilation album title of 2006 (and possibly every year since) but also an immaculate collection of Brazilian folk, funk, disco and soul by Sonar Kollektiv champs Jazzanova. Ten years on and the SK dons are back with a second edition of Paz E Futbol, compiled with just as much care as an homage to football's spiritual home as that debut record. To adopt the football parlance, the band's digging duties score goal after goal after goal; the smoky Simoneisms of Ary Lobo, the heavenly vibraphonics of Skymark, the slippery time signature and almost cosmic bossa of Lucas Santana, the raw jazz soul of Nathan Haines, the list goes on. Peace out.

Review: In truth, not all DJs are genuine "tastemakers", but Lefto most certainly is. Like the similarly minded - if far older and more experienced - Gilles Peterson, Lefto gets as much pleasure from introducing people to new and obscure music, as he does from rocking clubs. It's for that reason The Beauty Is Inside, a terrific, lightly blended mix of eclectic, far-sighted sounds hand-picked by the Belgian, is such essential listening. It naturally contains some slept-on tackle from the past - see the cuts by Ethiopian singer Alemayeu Eshete and South African artist Patience Africa - but even more killer contemporary fare, with highlights including the contributions of Qur'an Shaheed, Elisa Bee, fellow Belgians abrahamblue and contemporary jazz hero Makaya McCraven.

It shines a light and shows respect to everything from Ethiopian singer Alemayehu Eshete to South African singer and actress Patience Africa via Spanish composer Pedro Ruy-Blas. All these original tracks are from up-and-coming artists who Lefto feel deserve a bigger platform. It makes for a fascinating listen and serves up plenty of red hot talents.

Review: Yesterdays Universe was a loosely connected group of jazz musicians performing under various different and mysterious names and projects. Everything they did was produced and arranged by Madlib and this latest collection is a load of new and unreleased works from the mad talented collective. It copperas a rabid array of styles from the more hip hop leaning to the full experimental and wildly improvisational. There is also a special track taken from the Jaylib-era that was meant to be on a second album which never ended up being released. To finish it off, plenty of Loop Digga instrumentals, as well as some textbook interludes and outerludes also help colour this one and make it such a vivid listen.

Review: If you've ever wondered what you might hear if Nightmares on Wax man DJ E.A.S.E. invited you back to his Ibiza villa for a post-club crack on, this edition of the long-running "Back To Mine" series has all the answers. It's a fine mix, all told, with the Warp Records stalwart running through a range of soulful head-nodders (Children of Zeus, Ladi6, Creative Principle), and sun-kissed good-time grooves (Bosq, Massimo Vanoni), before gently upping the tempo via Dim Zach's Imagination-sampling nu-disco, the simmering jazz-funk of Chieftain, and the NYC proto-house style goodness of Soulphiction's SBM project. Naturally, you'll find a clutch of the Leeds-raised artist's own productions and reworks dotted throughout, including a wonderfully loved-up, string-laden house version of "Russia" by Fat Freddy's Drop.

Review: Theo Parrish is a world-renowned name in the global Detroit house and techno game, and he's thrown a fascinating curveball as the latest entrant for the acclaimed DJ-Kicks series. Mr. Parrish has gone above and beyond the duties of most invitees - rather than just licensing tracks from his favourite artists and big-name-friends, he's asked his own community from Detroit to each produce their own mixable tracks, exclusively for the comp. What's more, these are hardly established names - they're organic connections to Parrish, not occupying the top layer of attention and recognition. Bits from H-Fusion, Jon Dixon, Donald Lee Roland II, Ian Fink and Raybone Jones all dominate this anarchic new deconstruction of the otherwise exclusivist mix series.

The Future Bubbler series is where he does that best and now it hits a seventh volume with eight more tracks from fresh creative talents who explore broken beat, nu jazz and plenty of in between styles in all in their own unique ways.

Review: Eddie Piller and Dean Rudland have compiled a superb collection of underground 90s club sounds here for Acid Jazz. At that time the label was flying high and frequently selling millions of records by red-hot acts like Brand New Heavies and Jamiroquai. At the same time, dancefloors around London were taking influxes from those styles and acid jazz was erupting in many different directions. Here we get a snapshot of that with plenty of floor-filling tunes from Acid Jazz as well as others from other important labels of the time. And what a time it was.

It takes in a well-curated and eclectic selection of definitive tracks from the genre's heyday that all perfectly capture the essence of the movement which is defined by its infectious rhythms, jazz melodies, and silky beats. Review: Broken beat hero Kaidi Tatham steps forth with the first in a series of all-star remix albums of the Reel People Music back catalogue. Over an impressive ten tracks, Tatham sashays between syrupy soul slo-jams, virtuosic broken beat trips, almost UK funky-esque live jams, and acoustic boom bap beats. Percies include the sweeter-than-molasses opening flip of Sebb Junior's 'All My Life', his sassy, stripped-back version of Daz-I-Kue and Hadiya George's 'Pedigree' and a dazzlingly technical re-run of the Monkey Brothers' 'Losin my Head.' With this anthology, Tatham proves that London's broken beat scene continues to flourish, and his boundary-hopping style is as relevant as ever.

This reissue of the sixth edition of the series, first released in 2003, hears 14 tracks of nu-Brazilian groove by the likes of Azymuth, Marcos Valle, Sabrina Malheiros and Celia Vaz. You're not likely to hear a psychedelic acid downtempo version of 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine' anywhere else any time soon.

It's the latest to top up a longstanding series, which has been going since 1994. Review: Pat Van Dyke - presumably no relation of trance overlord Paul or owner of the most terrible English accent in the history of cinema, Dick - builds on 2018's Hello, Summer LP with a new album full of funk, bounce and rich harmonies. Falls To Pieces is part hip hop, part jazz, part fusion album with gentle keys washing over the dusty drum breaks as rock-solid bass lines underpin the lovely rhythmic guitar work. Here, more than ever before, Van Dyke shows himself to be a maturing composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist who has developed his sound without losing his signature.

Review: We Out Here, Brownswood Recordings' latest compilation, was born out of a desire by label boss Gilles Peterson to capture the essence of London's contemporary jazz scene. To ensure a sense of there "here and now", Peterson invited some of the city's brightest young bands and musicians into the studio in August 2017, recording the results over three action-packed days. The resulting never-heard-before tracks are, for the most part, joyous and thrilling, and range from trad jazz, jazz-funk and Latin jazz to acoustic-electronic fusions and groovy, guitar-laden downtempo explorations. It feels like a glimpse of a scene on the rise, and we wouldn't be surprised if many of those involved become modern British jazz greats in the years to come.

This is an unashamed collection of what the label thinks are the biggest tunes and most classic joints from across the years all on one triple vinyl set. Some unpredictable inclusions are the likes of Radiohead's otherworldly hymn 'Everything In Its Right Place' amongst standouts like Snooze's 'The Chase' (Revisited By Fila Brazilia).

Review: While previous instalments of Jazzman's essential Spiritual Jazz series have focused on killer cuts and rare gems from the past (specifically material recorded between the 1950s and '80s), the thirteenth volume shines a light on what's happening right now. This second part (of two) successfully showcases the best of the contemporary scene, showcasing cuts from around the world that neatly encapsulate the breadth and diversity of 21st century spiritual jazz. The plentiful highlights include the exotic, Eastern-tinged spiritualism of Wildflower's 'Flute Song', the futurist jazz-funk deepness of Steve Reid's 'For Coltrane', the layered vocals and acoustic instrumentation of Angel Bat Dawid's 'What Should I Tell My Children Who Are Black' and the sparkling, sun-soaked positivity of 'Nova' by Menagerie.

Review: DJ Oonops is back by popular demand. After the first volume of his Oonops Drops compilation got snapped up by lovers of exotic sounds, he returns with a second edition that is just as jam packed with heat from the worlds of dub, funk, soul, jazz and beats. Some artists will be known to reoccur diggers, some are brand new, but they all come correct. The well sequenced selection sinks you deep into swaggering dub, raises your spirits with some great flute playing and invites you into some subterranean jazz lounge, amongst many other things. This is the sort of shortcut collection that allows you to show off to friends after someone else has done all the hard work.

AYBEE - "Return To The Underground" (5:26)
Heatsick - "Snakes & Ladders" (7:51)
Tenderlonious - "Caramel" (8:28)
Review: The grandly titled Sounds Of The Universe: Art + Sound 2012-15 sees the always excellent Soul Jazz compile together the series of limited 12" releases the label has issued over the past three years. The double CD release features both these cuts and a whole host of new productions from some like-minded artists, but this LP sampler houses just those previously released tracks. It's a great move by Soul Jazz too, given how rare the original 12"s were and any self-respecting fan of electronic music should check Art + Sound for the Kassem Mosse, Andres, Heatsick and Tenderlonious cuts in particular. Taking grip of the entire B-side, Mosse's heat treated track "Staat Aus Glas" is 13 minutes long but could easily go one for three times as long without losing any of its charm.

Review: Now more than 45 releases deep into their journey, Apron Records have teamed up with Patta Soundsystem to work on their first various artists release. To celebrate this monumental milestone, both camps have collaborated to create a clothing capsule to accompany the release. Better Together is the slogan that runs throughout the entire collaboration, stressing how unity makes us stronger as individuals. A diverse array of offerings are featured here: experimentally minded offerings by Ashtrejinkins and Brassfoot, System Olympia does slo-mo electro, while sublime deep house comes courtesy of Shamos and Shy One, and label chief Steven Julien provides some emotive broken beats.

Review: Wagram has been busy putting together all sorts of authoritative collections on various different genres over the years. Next up the French label sets its sights to trip-hop - a distinctly British sound that emerged in the 90s quite specifically from Bristol and artists like Tricky, Massive Attack and Portishead. None of those pivotal names actually feature, weirdly, but there is still a wealth of love downtempo goodness here from the likes of Manchester's Mr Scruff, world music don Bonobo, disco divas Moloko and musical maestros Quantic and Thievery Corporation. It takes for a top listen.

L80s: So Unusual is a brilliantly broad mix that heads to all corners of the world with a sublime mix of downtempo sounds that reach into "icy hot coldwave, Sausalito seafood jazz, Glaswegian goth, makeshift Madonna, Sade spoofs, and Brat Pack balearic." Alex Phountzi and IG Culture are the main men at CoOp and they invited Allysha on board for this project which found her looking to the heavy broken sounds of the Aussie scene. Tracks from Sampology, Maia, Silentjay & Lanu, Ziggy Zeitgeist and CC Dance Orchestra all pair brilliant drums with meaningful synths and often heart-aching vocals.

Review: The extensive catalogue of Tokyo-based Grand Gallery is testament to their experience in piecing together an authoritative compilation, and so it goes on this exploration of Brazilian music from a Far-East perspective. Amongst the contributors to this collection are world-renowned percussionist Marcos Suzano, Katia B and Toyono, two prominent Brazilian singers. The repertoire on the collection spans classics such as 'Batucada' and 'Taj Mahal' as well as a lilting rendition of 'Golden Lady'. Recorded in Rio and bringing the unmistakable energy and passion of Brazilian music at its best, this is another high grade compilation from Grand Gallery.

Review: The next phase for jazzy house, broken beat, uplifting house and all these rather loosely adjacent genres is, without doubt, Sounds Familiar. The new imprint, based in Italy, was launched recently as a home for the eclectic palette of the various tastemakers, producers and DJs at its helm. And their posse, of course: broken beat hero Dego, duo Kamma and Masalo, and new age houser Retromigration are all among its ranks. Highlights of their first volume of sundowners include the trance waver 'Neon Ocean' and the halftime nu-jazzer 'Pausenbrot'.

Review: The Jazz Room is a hotly curated selectors' V/A compiled by jazz expert and BBE label owner Paul Murphy. Following the success of the original comp first released in 2019, this one comes up after a full four years' worth of curating and mulling, and aims to represent the full range of both classic and contemporary jazz sounds, from New Orleans to Latin jazz, in quick succession. Consisting of contemporary jazz versions of the likes of Fela Kuti, Raul Monsalve and, for some reason, The Human League, said contributions by the likes of Cruisic and Clare Fischer aim to trace the - yes, the - comprehensive throughline of jazz from past to present, all while refusing to abstain from BBE's trademark eclecticism. Highlights include 'Rebel No. 23' and Fast 3's Hammond-organ-injected 'Don't You Want Me'. Most importantly, no track goes without a driving, bright-bursting mood of energy.

Review: Slow (Motion And Movement) was originally released on the Sonoton label back in 1980. It is a cult favourite now, much revered for its chipped, cut and edited takes on library breaks. The super sought after record gets a full reissue here from the good folks at Be With and is full of some of the most heat, dubbed out, slow and twisted library breaks you could ever imagine hearing. In between those monstrous moments are plenty of new age and synth style tracks that are all just as good. This most varied and vital selection is an essential one for all serious diggers.

Review: David Bryne's superlative Luaka Bop label is back with a second volume of its Beleza Tropica compilation that aims to shine a light on its African roots. The sound, in a nutshell and like so many genres, started with slaves looking to lighten the mood of their hard labour. The Brazillian take on it has always been more relaxed and evolved in Bahia and Rio de Janeiro. This new collection takes in plenty of the most well-known names from Gilberto Gil to Chico Science & Nacao Zumbi, Moleque De Rua to Os Paralamas Do Sucesso.
