But this crew break the mould, and we knew they would, because with a lineup featuring 9th Wonder, Kamasi Washington, Robert Glasper and Terrace Martin, how could they not? It was back in 2020 when they came together to serve up some essential hip hop sounds that draw on funk, jazz and soul in fine contemporary fashion. Two years later the record still hits the mark with the help of some fine guests spots from the likes of Malaya & Phoelix, Herbie Hancock, Cordae and even Snoop Dogg.

It coe son his own new label Amai Records and the title translates as 'Peace.' Review: Canadian trio Badbadnotgood have made us wait for Talk Memory, their fifth album. Arriving a decade after their first full-length, and some five years since the release of their acclaimed fourth LP, it's a much more expansive and cinematic affair than its predecessors - both in scope (it includes more nods towards post-rock and jazz-rock, for example) and sound (a number of tracks feature string arrangements by Brazilian arranger Arthur Verocai). It's a dazzling affair all told, with the band's choice of improvisational composition techniques and an impressive guest list (Laraaju, Karriem Roggins, Terrace Martin and Brandee Younder all appear) resulting in a string of epic, life-affirming compositions. Picking highlights is tough, but we'd suggest checking slow-burn, constantly building epic 'Signal to the Noise' and the buzzing, psychedelic jazz-rock of 'Beside April'.

Review: The music of Australian Jazz-Funk outlet Hiatus Kaiyote has a style that can't be easily pinpointed, striking the perfect note merging poetry and polyrhythms. Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, Tupac Shakur, Flying Lotus are all listed as influences, but really the soundscape falls closest to future nu-jazz, if such a thing could even exist. This deluxe pressing of the group's 2012 debut LP 'Tawk Tomahawk' is celebrating a decade with a transparent red repressing, packaged with an exclusive 7" featuring a collaboration with none other than Q-Tip, as well as a fresh-to-death, fast-paced remix of 'Boom Child' from Clever Austin.

To celebrate this monumental milestone, both camps have collaborated to create a clothing capsule to accompany the release. Review: Wagram has been busy putting together all sorts of authoritative collections on various different genres over the years. Next up the French label sets its sights to trip-hop - a distinctly British sound that emerged in the 90s quite specifically from Bristol and artists like Tricky, Massive Attack and Portishead. None of those pivotal names actually feature, weirdly, but there is still a wealth of love downtempo goodness here from the likes of Manchester's Mr Scruff, world music don Bonobo, disco divas Moloko and musical maestros Quantic and Thievery Corporation. Review: Simultaneously reaching back into the roots of Samba whilst reconfiguring the sound for a new context, Dominco Lancelloti's Sramba is an ingenious contribution to the world of Brazilian jazz. Recorded over two months in Lancelloti's home studio in Lisbon, and inspired by a couple of Russian-designed synths that came into the artist's possession, this is a project that was born out of experimentation. The opening track, 'Ere', features hypnotic guitar riffs and skittering drum sequences that gradually build into an infectious groove over the course of the track. On the B-side, 'Nada Sera De Outra Maneira' takes a softer turn with glittering hints of piano and a central narrative driven by velvety vocals. This is an exciting new take on Samba that opens up a new world of creative possibilities.

Review: Ghost Box founder Jim Jupp returns with a new album from his flagship project, Belbury Poly, and this time around he's doing things a bit differently. Compared to the usual winsome minimal synth soliloquies, he's recruited a full band to round out his sound on The Path. As a result, this isn't like any other Belbury Poly record to date, even if past collaborator Christopher Budd returns on bass and guitar. Elsewhere, Midlake's Jesse Chandler lends some flute, clarinet and key tones, Max Saidi holds down the drums and Justin Hopper offers his narration to the record. Review: Londoner Ash Walker explored far and wide with his last album Aquamarine back in 2019. Now he follows it up with a record that is just as ambitious. This fourth full-length via Night Time Stories features plenty of top collaborations with contemporary stars like Andrew Ashong, Amp Fiddler, Yazz Ahmed and Saville and is a gorgeously astral mix of jazz, blues, folk, reggae and soul. Review: 2015 might not feel like that long ago, but in terms of the UK's jazz scene it's a lifetime. When Tenderlonious, Yussef Dayes, Nick Walters and Adrian Shepherd laid down Two For Joy, they lit the touch paper for the explosive resurgence of UK jazz as a young, hungry and inspired modern thing. It's a scene and community which has gone from strength to strength since, in what should feel like a relatively short space of time. But wind it back with this reissue of the acclaimed album and realise how potent the ideas were. It's jazz played by jazz players, but you can feel the looming influence of hip-hop and electronica informing the angles to make for a new approach which brought jazz screaming back into the wider population.

Review: Kiefer Shackleford is back on Stones Throw with more of his elevated beatdowns and dextrous piano flex. The LA-based artist first cropped up on Leaving Records back in 2017 and now he comfortably slides into his fifth album in a lean, sun-soaked dream of drums slung way down low and right to the back, leaving more room for his illustrious keys and synths to pirouette over the top. It's a simple recipe, but the secret is in the ingredients. The drums shuffle and slide with crooked flair, and the melodies burst skywards whether it's classic piano, woozy Rhodes or fluttering modulations Shackleford chooses to sing through.

Review: Afrorack is a Ugandan producer whose self-built modular synthesis approach to making music has lent him much credo over the years, but perhaps none will lend him so much as The Afrorack, which comes as the latest and least deniable expression of his sound to date. Four tracks of traditional African rhythmatics merge with live sound synthesis and ghost-powered CV noodlings, producing an incredible foray into avant-garde electronics few could argue has ever been heard before. Whether it be caused by the trance-intoned 'Inspired' to the grit-covered 'Bass', Hakuna Kulala must be chuffed to have Afrorack form part of their catalogue, as his music is certainly among their best for representing the lesser-trodden and most criminally unsung corners of African electronic music.

Puzzle Dust is reportedly an album that was four years in the making and it comes on a lovely blue slab of vinyl.
