Abel Lima E Les Sofas - "Corre Riba Corre Baxo"
Abel Lima Des Iles Du Cap Vert - "Nos Maos"
Review: Supreme Cape-Verdean funk from the 70s, two of Abel Lima's most distinctive cuts are re-energised by Sofrito. "Corre Riba Corre Baxo" translates to what comes up must come down... But there's no come down here; pure positivity oozes from every highlife guitar strum and the overwhelming presence of the walking bassline. "Nos Maos" is a tad more subdued as the French and Portuguese lyrics pin down a tight, horn-led Caribbean groove. Act fast: as with all Super Singles, this one is super-limited!

Obaa Sima

Daa Nyinaa
Yemmpa Aba
Bome Nnwom
Review: This latest reissue from Awesome Tapes From Africa is the whole reason for founder Brian Shimkovitz starting the blog and the label that grew out of it. Some 13 years ago, Shimkovitz stumbled across a cassette copy of Obaa Sima whilst travelling Ghana and his love for Ata Kak's music lead to the foundation of the Awesome Tapes From Africa blog and the commencement of a long running effort to track down the Ghanaian musician. Some four years after ATFA became a label, Shimkovitz finally tracked down the musician, real name Yaw Atta-Owusu, and was granted permission to reissue Obaa Sima, using the second hand tape purchased in Ghana as the source. The seven tracks on this LP are a winning tinny combination of highlife, rap, pop, and more with "Daa Nyinaa" sounding like a cover version of William De Vaughn's "Be Thankful For What You've Got".

Michel Bagoe - "Oule Colle" (3:31)
Les Hamsters - "Hamsters Frappe" (4:30)
Review: Destination Martinique: Sofrito's Island Series gets lively to the sound of Michel Bagoe and the brilliantly named Les Hamsters. The former lays down a sublime carnival soundtrack with relentless drums and a highlife feel to the guitars while the latter develop the street party feel with rippling drums and tightly plucked guitars. Guaranteed to whisk your dance to another world, just like the rest of the Sofrito discography!

Myriam Makeba - "Toyota Fantasy" (John Bryan edit) (3:52)
Review: Released at the start of 2015, the inaugural Africa Airways collection was so successful it was repressed twice. Naturally this sophomore compendium of long-lost pan-African deep funk gems is equally as satisfying and enlightening. Ranging from the illustrious strings and tight disco groove of Ivory Coast's M'Bamina to the swooning vocals and arresting charge of Bongi Makeba by way of her mother mama Africa Myriam Makeba who closes the show with the tight pounding groove and commercial command "Toyota Fantasy", it's yet another triumphant collection for Africa Seven. Watch out for the Dutch anomaly mid-way; Oscar Harris's awesomely titled (and James Brown referencing) "Relax... Before Doing Sex" is guaranteed to light some fires whenever and wherever it's aired.

Tudo Bem
Luanda
Review: Sao Paulo's SELVAGEM drop a masterful double sider for Universal Cave 004. "Tudo Bem" is sunny, soulful AOR bliss. A tribute to a favorite Brazilian musician and an update for contemporary rotation. "Luanda" is hypnotic, psychedelic tropicalia. Truly digging deep, SELVAGEM give Universal Cave a taste of the Forward Deep & Free sounds of Balnearico from Brazil. Balnearico is the fusion of balearic and "balneario," the Portuguese word that is synonymous with beach.

Bazare D Pablo - "Nassima" (12" edit) (8:11)
Atalaku 8 - "Africa" (5:46)
Atalaku 8 - "Africa" (Siwo dub) (5:34)
Review: No 12 in the Sofrito Super Singles 12" series offers up a double shot of vital Soukous / Coupe Decale hybrids out of Abidjan & Paris that will light up any self-respecting dancefloor like a stack of dynamite. First up is the mysterious Bazare D. Pablo, whose 1975 production "Nassima" dices together elements of Soukous and Highlife with brisk percussion and a solid bassline underpinning some delightful vocals. Complementing this, Sofrito throw in "Africa" from Atalaku 8, a Paris-based Ivoirian/Congolese group operating out of the legendary Kos studio whose Coupe Decale sounds would fit right into a House set for the more adventurous DJs out there. The Siwo Dub is superb too!

Let's Fall In Love (9:56)
Good Name (7:13)
Review: Now a high chief and Kenyan diplomat, Onyeabor was once one of Africa's most forward-thinking popular music contributors. Released in 1983, toward the end of his eight album discography, the two extended cuts on Good Name reflect the emergence of electronic music and how it influenced African pop culture. With conscious lyrics about value and soul, both tracks capture one of the most exciting times in recent musical history. Truly unique.

I Jool Omo (4:08)
Talking Drum (4:06)
Review: Freestyle lay down a marker for African Party, their upcoming Ginger Johnson retrospective with this crucial 7" sampler. If you are not familiar with Ginger that's probably because he's an unsung hero of promoting African music in Europe; arriving in London from Nigeria in the late 40s, Johnson established himself as the pre-eminent Afro-Latin percussionist in Europe by the '60s. Dip into his discography and you'll uncover credits on tracks for Rolling Stones and Quincy Jones, whilst Ginger also acted as mentor to a young Fela Kuti. Freestyle seem to have timed this Ginger Johnson & His African Messengers 7" perfectly to arrive just as the sun hits London and listening to the vibrant percussive bump of "I Jool Omo" has us craving the forthcoming album.

Rita Lee & Tutti Frutti - "Agora E Moda" (4:17)
Pete Dunaway - "Supermarket" (4:52)
Review: Time for some Brazilian psychedelic boogie straight from 78. Erstwhile lead singer in Os Mutantes, with a personality thrice as big as the soaking wet bassline on "Agora E Moda", Rita Lee is no stranger to her motherland - even now. Flip for a huge soul injection courtesy of Pete Dunaway. Sounding English in every direction (from his name to his lyrics to the stunning, string-coated arrangement) he's actually Sao Paulo born and is a renowned multi-instrumentalist. Review: Two premium Latin funk documents on one limited 45, Mr Bongo deliver once again: Marcos Valle needs no introduction to Brazilian music enthusiasts. "Mentira" is a self-cover as Valle takes his 69 classic "Mentira Carioca" and develops the dynamic with a vocal style that's highly reminiscent of Donovan. Wilson Simonal - "Nem Vem Que Nao Tem" (2:33)
Trio Mocoto - "Nao Adianta" (4:04)
Review: Wilson Simonal - Nem Vem Que Nao Tem
An instant and super catchy samba-MPB hit made famous by its inclusion in Fernando Meirelles and Katia Lund's 'City Of God'. This is a firm Simonal favourite at Mr Bongo HQ.

Simonal was a hugely successful singer in the 1960's and early 70's; one of the most popular artists in Brazil infact. 'Nem Vem Que Nao Tem' was previously released on 7" by Odeon in France and Spain, and appears on his 'Alegria, Alegria !!!' LP on Odeon Brazil, released in 1967

Trio Mocoto - Nao Adianta
Trio Mocoto were one of Jorge Ben Jr's main backing bands and highly influential to his sound. They recorded with him on the seminal 'Forca Bruta', 'Negro E Lindo' and 'Tabua de Esmeralda' LP's.

'Nao Adianta' first appeared on Trio Mocoto's self-titled 1977 Arlequim LP. It was subsequently released on 7" in Spain, Portugal and Italy (and we are assuming in France too).

Review: Two previously rare Julio Ernesto 'Fruko' Estrada productions on one super-juicy 45! First up are The Afrosound with a cover of The Chakachas' instantly recognisable "Fiebre En La Jungla". Throwing an array of steamy, sensuous vocal textures, it will cause some serious heat on any floor whose dancers knows the original. We remain in Columbia on the B as one of Wganda Kenya's rarest Disco Fuentes 45s gets a revisit. Heavily percussive cumbia laced with rich organ-primed funk, things get really hypnotic when the groove strips back to the insistent rhythm devices.

Researched with passion and attention to detail by Dr Markus Coester, this not only traces the popular Nigerian and Ghanaian genre to its earliest roots (Fela Kuti's earliest recordings are on here - never released in over 50 years!) but also its global footprint as the sound and its creators floated between London and Lagos for recording sessions and creative free-for-alls. Complete with detailed notes, photos and classic adverts of the era, this is the ultimate highlife time capsule that keeps on giving. Superb as always from Soundway.

From the breath-taking salvo of As Meninas' fast-paced Tropicana samba "Rondo Sambao" to the big brassy suckerpunch of Claudia's "Deixa O Morro Cantar", these cuts (all from around 63-70) saw criminally limited runs when originally released and have been delivered, arranged and celebrated by one of Blue Note's most respected players.

Georgette - "Kyrie" (3:25)
Claudia - "Com Mais De 30" (2:45)
Review: Picking up where release 25 left us, Mr Bongo's Brazil 45s series continues to focus on the females for this beautiful double-up. Georgette's "Kirie" is an overwhelming ballad that grows so naturally and subtly from her naked tones and guitar to a much broader picture with rich, warm backing harmonies and soft strings in the background. Claudia's "Com Mais De 30", meanwhile, was way ahead of its time (1971). With its fuzzy guitars, walloping groove and bold dynamic switches, it's no surprise that Fourtet and Floating Points have championed this pretty hard over the years.

Review: Killer samba from the Mr Bongo crew here on the 23rd edition of their ever impressive Brazil 45s series. Any samba scholar worth their salt will be familiar with Sonia Santos's wondrously psychedelic "Poema Ritmico Do Malandro (Balanco Do Crioulo)", which was originally released back in 1971 on the Copablanca label and has popped up every now and again on compilations. Bang Bang (El Tiroteo) (2:53)
Review: Founded by Julio Ernesto Estrada and heavily inspired by the Fania All-Stars, legendary Latin funk troupe Fruko Y Sus Tesos delivered over 10 albums during their 30 year tenure. Most prolific in the mid 70s, these cuts are taken from the band's prime; "El Preso" is a firing mambo that dynamically strips back to just a raw piano backbone before building up with its overwhelmingly tight horns. Things get a little strange on the B as the band over Swing Sextet's "Bang Bang" with warped, wonderful and ultimately psychedelic results. Stunning.

Review: Mr Bongo kickstarts a new Afro 45s series with serious intention; all-girl troupe from Guinea Amazones De Guinee take the lead with a live recording from Paris, 1983. Taken from their Au Coeur De Paris album, it's the perfect example of a live recording with the balance of musicianship and crowd participation precision tuned. Review: The UK's Mr Bongo has been reissuing old music and putting out new tunes since the late 1980's, and the label is still going strong in 2015. This latest 7" features two of Ethiopia's greatest musicians, Alemayehu Eshete and Mahmoud Ahmed, in a head to head, split EP. On the A-side, Mr Bongo has resurfaced Eshete's "Tchero Adari Negn", a supremely funky piece with the man's own voice gliding effortlessly over hard drums and fuzy guitar riffs; "Bemim Sebeb Litlash" goes deeper and more psychedelic on the flip, and Ahmed's voice is a pleasure as always. Kelen Ati Leen (3:41)
Souleymane (4:29)
Review: Insanely funky business from Senegal's famous Orchestra Baobab (who are still touring and toiling 40 years later), "Kelen Ati Leen" is a really sweaty, heavy slab of funk that stares west for inspiration and a mild psychedelic Hendrixian sheen. "Souleymane", released three years after the A-side in 1978, takes more of a Latin influence as the horns get steamy over a rigid highlife spine to create a detailed and very physical groove.
