Review: While music has been one of the most poignant methods for unleashing his creativity, Senegalese artist Mor Thiam is a much deeper character than just your everyday Afrobeat musician. Aside from being a magnificent drummer, the man is also a cultural historian, and has been heavily involved in the wider entertainment industry since the 1970s. Dini Safarrar (Drums Of Fire) is his debut album from '73 and, until Jazzman did us this beauty of a favour, has been a sort of mirage for many record collectors, making this an even more special reissue to have on our shelves. Much like the works of Sun Ra, this album has everything; from fiery, psyched-out ballads, to deeper and more jazzy moments, it really is a work of rare breed. What we love most about it is its haziness, a subtle coating of distortion and rawness that completes every sound, every horn, and every drum roll - the latter being the most prominent and singular aspect of this album. A very special and highly recommended release - be quick!

Review: It would be fair to say that Gregory Porter is a man on the rise. In the four years since he made his debut, the jazz singer-songwriter has become one of the most name-checked soul men on the planet. Take Me To The Alley, his first album for three years, sees him flexing his musical muscles more impressively than ever before. After opening with the beautiful Marvin Gaye style "Holding On", and Curtis Mayfield-goes jazz thrills of "Don't Lose Your Steam", the singer-songwriter runs through a series of up-tempo and down-tempo compositions that sit somewhere between classic soul and evocative jazz.

Would You Believe In Me (2:32)
Sunny Day (2:37)
Review: While some AOTN releases are perplexing exercises in digging and detective gymnastics, others are more of a straight-up selector pleasure for label bossman and soul merchant Fryer. Like these two classics from jazz funk artist Lucien. Both staples in Fryer's sets for 20 years, neither are hard to track down - "Would You Believe In Me" is on his 73 album Rashida while "Sunny Day" is on his 74 album Minds Eye - but neither of them have ever been on 45" before, either. Whether you're familiar with Lucien's unique fusions or this is your first encounter, this release works a treat.

Review: Founded in the early '70s by karaoke's accidental inventor Irv Kratka, Inner City Records's stamp on jazz was one of the strongest during its 15 year tenure. Paying respect to traditional and fusion, it caught the world's attention and admiration in a very special way. Super-Intendant selector Kev Beadle was one of its most influential pushers on this side of the pond, so he's the perfect man to select and secure the 14 label-defining classics you hear right here. A great starting point for any Inner City starter and a well-considered, dynamic collection for collectivists, this captures a unique moment in jazz that still sparkles and pops to this day.

Aqua Sansa
Silent Bell
Daybreak
Takone
Conspiration
Review: Following in the pioneering steps of his father, the legendary Karlheinz Stockhausen, Markus Stockhausen made quite a splash with his first LP Aqua Sansa, recorded with Jasper Van't Hof. While jazz can be used as a reference point on this highly sought after album from 1980, it's more appropriate to think of the record in terms of freeform timbral expression. There's a fourth world, Jon Hassell-esque charm to pieces such as "Daybreak" while the likes of "Takone" sport a more eerie, minimalist charm. Either way, it's a highly worthy reissue for a much vaunted gem of leftfield music.

Review: Seldom does a compilation title explain exactly what's in store and allure with some level of mystique like Magic Peterson Sunshine. Especially when you see the label he's digging on: MPS. One of Germany's most influential, enduring and creative contributions to jazz, Musik Produktion Schwarzwald's archives contain all sorts of hidden treasures and obscurities for those who know where and how to find them. Gilles certainly does, as proved by this 15-strong collection that ranges from big band swing of Mark Murphy to the northern soul stomp of The Third Wave by way of the more experimental en-mass vocal adventures of George Gruntz, Peterson really has worked some magic throughout this curation.

Review: A key component in modern Turkish music since the '70s, Mustafa would have gone under the radar if it wasn't for break diggers. While he's still active to this day, Genclik Lle Elle is largely cited as his creative zenith. Recorded in Istanbul, 1973, the instrumental album takes the funk template and flings it into experimental, often cosmic pastures. Highlights include the planet-hopping glissandos on "Zeytinyagli", the progressive head-swirling frenzy of "Lorke" and the infectious eastern-fused riff on "Emmioglu". Plus it's on coloured vinyl. Plus it's got a monkey sound engineer on the cover. Plus it's limited. This record has a hell of a lot going for it.

Review: One of this year's Mercury Prize nominees, Wisdom Of Elders sees London saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings hitting a new ambitious high as he recorded the whole body of work with a troupe of South African musicians led by Mandla Mlangeni in one single day. Aptly described as afro-futurism, the collective melt down nuances of jazz, psychedelia and traditional South African music to paint a unique picture that's delightfully frenzied yet soulfully smooth all at once. From the big Rhodes washes and vocal textures of "The Observer" to the dramatic percussive tumbles and lonely trumpet of "The Observed" by way of epic multi-suite adventures such as "The Sea" and the incendiary opener "Mzwandile", Wisdom Of Elders lives up to its name with a spirit that's at once both future and timeless.

Nica's Dance (8:23)
A Prayer For (10:16)
Akhenaten (10:27)
Many Blessings (5:54)
Review: Contemporary jazz saxophonist Nat Birchall prefers to do quality over quantity. The talented instrumentalist first appeared in 1999 but has only released a handful of album to date, with the latest two - including this new album - coming out on London's excellent Jazzman imprint. Birchall really does make that sax scream and suffer, and the opener "Nicha's Dance" has to contain the best sax solo that we've heard in a long while on these charts. "A Prayer For" is moodier but nonetheless brilliant in its execution, while the lead tune "Akhenaten" is funkier and down to earth, leaving "Many Blessings" to deliver the late night G&T vibes. Chapeau..!

Roll Your Own (5:39)
Pearl (Among The Swine) (6:03)
Review: In Tramp we trust! Germany's foremost funk archivalists are on a veritable roll right now and swiftly follow that double drop of Peach Chant compilations with this kicker 7" from the Bobby Hamilton Quintet. The quintet's rare 1972 LP, Dream Queen, is the focus here as Tramp exhume two prime jazz funk cuts for their debut appearance on their preferred 7" format. Ever a label to keep DJs on their toes, both cuts on this 45 actually play at 33rpm, a method employed by Tramp to ensure both 5 minute tracks sound as loud and crisp as possible! There's an altogether dreamy quality to the lead trumpet on "Roll Your Own" (has this been sampled?) whilst "Pearl (Among The Swine)" will please the jazz dancers no end.

Review: Resistance Sonores is Modern Sun Records head honcho Skymark's sixth studio album. He has also released some great EPs on labels like Rush Hour, Neroli and Nsyde in recent times. On offer here are eight tracks of spiritual jazz, Brazilian fusion and soulful disco composed, performed and recorded by Marc Friedli himself. The Barcelona based producer claims "No hype, no indie elitism, no opportunistic network, no lobby in search of the fame, just soulful music!" And that's a good enough mission statement if you ask us. There are some quite lovely nu-jazz vibes on here, are reminiscent of modern legends Mark de Clive Lowe or Atjazz's finer moments and an enjoyable listen that will fuel some exotic daydream fantasies to get you by until next Summer. Highly recommended!
