Disco Baby (3:06)
Disco Baby (Floating Points & Red Greg edit) (3:55)
Review: If online chatter is to be believed, this tasty 7" from Floating Points' Melodies label is one of the most keenly anticipated disco releases of the year. For starters, the A-side boasts an obscure (but in demand) solo production from Manhattan Transfer keyboardist Yaron Gershovsky. "Disco Baby" is a prime chunk of jaunty, jazz-funk influenced disco-funk, the keyboardist's own jammed-out riffs and solos taking pride of place in the mix alongside punchy horns and a lolloping groove. Arguably even better, though, is Floating Points and Red Greg's flipside re-edit, which plays around with the original version's all-too-short drum break before letting the synths, keys and horns really sparkle.

Review: Crown Ruler Records co-founder Jeremy Spellacey is highly regarded within the crate-digging community, primarily for his ability to sniff out copies of obscure - but, naturally, high quality - boogie-era disco records from Africa and the Caribbean. On this fine compilation, Spacetalk has offered the New Zealander the opportunity to showcase some of those finds, alongside a smattering of better-known favourites and more recent cuts (see Mike Fabulous's overlooked modern boogie gem "Wang East"). Predictably, Spellacey has delivered the goods, serving up humid, exotic and loved-up gems galore, including the fluttering brilliance of Stimela's "I Love You", the marimba-laden Balearic boogie of Feladey's "Forest Music" and Devon Russell's impeccable reggae-soul cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Move on Up".

Got 2 Be Loved (7:19)
A Rose Is A Rose (6:30)
Review: Eccentric, California-based imprint Take Away has put out some impressive 12" singles since launching earlier in the year. Predictably, this two-tracker from the little-known Soul Reductions is another stone cold killer. A-side "Got To Be Loved" - a bouncy, pitched-up disco-house floorfiller that sits somewhere between Tiger & Woods and late '90s "French Touch" house - leads the way, sounding like the kind of cut that will quickly raise the temperature out on the dancefloor. Flipside "A Rose Is A Rose" is a deeper and woozier offering, delivering a rolling house re-interpretation of a boogie-era electrofunk gem with added filter effects.

Tanzania (6:33)
I Need Me (7:16)
Are You Somebody? (6:22)
Humans After All (6:55)
Review: Fresh from an acclaimed outing on FACES, Giovanni Damico pops up on Marcel Vogel's inspired Lumberjacks In Hell label. The Italian producer is naturally in fine form here, with A-side "Tanzania" - a breezy, house-friendly rework of what sounds like a Tanzanian boogie cut - being one of the most addictive and life-affirming edits we've heard this month. You'll find more wiggling synthesizer lines on the deliciously dreamy and evocative deep house shuffler "I Need Me", while "Are You Somebody" is a successful exercise in subtly beefing up a low-slung disco-funk number. As if that wasn't enough to set the juices flowing, he completes a brilliant E.P with the jazz-fuelled deep house smokiness of "Humans After All".

Dance Tonight (Disco dub) (4:03)
Review: Currently laying down soul as 77 Karat Gold, Nobuyuki Suzuki finds time to beam back to Eglo as Sauce81 with a stunning boogie jam that's got summer well and truly locked in its targets. Cruising the Central Line in an inimitable loose, swinging way, there's magic to be found between the synth melody and juicy slapbass. Complete with a floor-focussed dub, this will have everyone dancing, guaranteed.

Review: Soundway Records' recent Doin' It In Lagos compilation did a terrific job shining a light on the lesser-known boogie and disco-funk sound of early '80s Nigeria. That set included Livy Ekezemie's "Holiday Actions", one of the standout cuts from the musician/producer's brilliant - but ludicrously hard to find - 1983 album, Friday Night. This reissue is, then, well timed. The set sees Ekezemie effortlessly join the dots between Clavinet-heavy, Afro-tiged disco-funk, boogie, AOR ballads and, in the case of the brilliant "Dedication", his own tribute to Stevie Wonder classic "Superstition". It's a fine set, all told, and one that's shot through with hard-wired early '80s funk.

Get Down (4:58)
Dream Machine (5:45)
That Sound (5:49)
Review: It was probably inevitable that Let's Play House co-founder Jacques Renault would eventually make an appearance on another Brooklyn institution, Razor 'N' Tape. Renault is, of course, a serial re-editor with a string of fine EPs to his name. There's predictably plenty to set the pulse racing across the four tracks, from the jazz guitar-laden disco-funk hedonism of opener "Cold Blooded", to the loose and punchy, horn-heavy warmth of hazy Afro-disco closer "That Sound" (which, thrillingly, includes a tweaked, teased, dubbed and extended percussion break). In between, you'll find the high-tempo disco-pump of "Dream Machine" and the piano-laden funk workout "Get Down".

Summer Love (3:09)
Review: More quality grooves from Washington DC label specializing in reissuing obscure and unknown 70s and 80s dance music. This time around is Dreamcast who are Davon Bryant in conjunction with Swedish guy Sasac aka King Al. "Liquid Deep" is sexy late night deep funk the way it was always intended and Bryant's smooth as silk vocals are just like... Wow! So with Dreamcast on the vocals and Sasac on the beat, we are hoping there's more things on the way from this trans coastal duo in 2017.

Bumpin' NYC (5:23)
Sistem (6:36)
Review: Kevin Gorman aka Adesse Versions brings his cut and paste ethos to Brooklyn edit series Razor-N-Tape with a varied pair of heaters. On this wicked two tracker, the label takes it back to their early format of one track per side: and these two cuts can certainly carry it! On this side we've got "Bumpin' NYC" a lo-slung disco classic with that proper New York City vibe, if ya catch our drift? On that side, we have a lovely little number in the form of "Sistem" that flips an afrobeat sample into a dark and groovy club track with even a little bit of acid for good measure.

Once I've Been There (extended Promo version) (5:50)
Captain Connors (unreleased extended mix) (7:23)
Review: Norman Connors was a 'go to' producer in the 1970s and '80s for soul and jazz, while holding it down on an impressive array of solo albums. Connors is a drummer first and foremost, and across his rhythm-focussed recordings were the introduction of singers who went on to have their own individual careers such as Jean Carn, Phyllis Hyman and the exceptional Phillip Mitchel - who features on A side 'Once I've Been There'. Flipside track 'Captain Connors' comes as a 12" mix made in 1977 but never released before on vinyl! Previously, the title track was only ever on a promotional release, often changing hands at over 100 quid a time - demand is high on this special release on the original imprint, cop it while you can!

Keep On Keeping On (6:41)
Review: Brooklyn-based Razor 'N' Tape has some serious pulling-power these days. Having already released material from Dirtytwo, Mr V, Loz Goddard, Kraak & Smaak and Fouk, the New York imprint has managed to score an EP from Mister Saturday Night regular Nebraska. Predictably, it's a party-starting affair from start to finish. Bouncy, horn-heavy disco-house A-side "Drill Deep" - a weighty chunk of unashamed peak-time goodness - leads the way, with beatdown-tempo shuffler "Keep On Keeping On" snapping at its heels. This bubbles along tenderly via swirling disco orchestration, before bursting into life midway through thanks to the introduction of a sublime female vocal. "Instant Pressure", a chunkier, dub-flecked fusion of dewy-eyed soul and low-slung acid bass, is also superb.

Review: In recent years, Guy Cuevas' 1982 12", Obsession, has become something of an in-demand item amongst Balearic diggers and post-disco collectors. Given the eye-watering online prices for original copies, it would be fair to say that this reissue is more than welcome. Like the Paris-based Cuban's original '82 12", this edition boasts two contrasting mixes. On the A-side, you'll find the loose, languid and groovy "Nassau Mix", a sun-kissed fusion of leisurely boogie grooves and chanted Cuban vocals. On the flip you'll find the horn-heavy "London Mix", which breaks out into an extended Latin percussion jam midway through. Naturally, both mixes are superb.

The Feeling Is Strong (7:36)
Long Time Dancing (7:34)
Review: The latest volume in Kolour LTD's popular ten-inch series comes from Dicky Trisco, a producer arguably better known for his impeccable scalpel jobs than his original productions. The two tracks here sit somewhere between the two, building tasty dancefloor tools out a swathe of samples and a handful of new musical elements. Rahaan style A-side "The Feeling Is Strong" peppers a rubbery, bass-heavy disco groove with jammed-out electric piano lines and razor-sharp guitars. On the flip, Trisco adds weighty new drums to a looped-up old disco/boogie fusion jam. So while the vocal-heavy samples scream disco, the alien synths and mutant funk electronics are closer to vintage electrofunk.

Review: Favorite Records take us direct to the source: a disco gem of holy grail proportions, Sunshine is Byron's only album, OG copies go for over L500 and it's chock-a-block with dancefloor gold. From the in-your-face physicality of "Galaxy" or the planet-kicking line dance feels of "Space Cowboy" by way of the ultimate 80s sleaze synth boogie of "Heart To Heart Sensation", this was Byron in his prime with so much promise and latent funk, and led to one of disco's ultimate bombs "Dance To The Music". Essential.

Blessin' (11:24)
Whole Lotta Love (Back To The Box edit) (14:10)
Review: Chicagoan DJ/producer Jamie 3:26 has long been regarded as one of the edit scene's brightest talents, with fine outings on Local Talk and Lumberjacks in Hell only enhancing his credentials. Happily, this two-tracker on G.A.M.M could well be his strongest release to date. A-side "Blessing" is a brilliantly teased-out revision of a stomping disco-soul anthem, which rises, falls and rises again magnificently over 12 mesmerizing minutes. Arguably even better, though, is his Ron Hardy inspired rework of a well-known Italo-disco cover version of Led Zepellin's "Whole Lotta Love". The Chicagoan expertly works the track hard for nearly 15 minutes, alternating between sleazy vocal passages and the throbbing, sleazy instrumentation.

The resultant set was self-released in relatively limited qualities and has since gone in to become an in-demand item amongst collectors of global disco and synth-pop sounds. This officially licensed reissue stretches the album's original eight tracks over two slabs of wax to allow for a louder, DJ-friendly pressing. Record one boasts Arian's English language recordings; the sumptuous AOR disco of "Your Love Makes Me A Winner", the punchy, horn-heavy disco-bogie brilliance of "Can't Say Goodbye", the K.I.D style dancefloor badness of "Sure It's Funky" and blue-eyed soul of "Still Together". Move Out The Way
Super Transfer
Blue Line
Review: Edit king Rahaan makes a connection with the ever-prolific Lumberjacks In Hell, and he's sounding feisty on growling lead track "Move Out Of The Way". Dirty, distorted drums and simmering acid gurgles make for a perfect seedy dancefloor lube, setting the scene for the more forthright jack beat styles of "Super Transfer". Keeping the fuzzed out Chicago styles at the forefront, "Blue Line" swoops in at the end like some long lost Trax off-cut with all the grit and guts you would expect from the earliest days of pure, electronic house music.

Escravos De Jo (9:52)
Nana Love Dub (7:45)
Review: Preston's Cottam continues on his winning streak, following up great releases recently on Versatile, his eponymous imprint and the impressive Ruff Draft edits series. Following on in the style of the latter, Ele Records "is dedicated to sourcing and sharing dusty, sample based music inspired by the rich soundscape of early hip hop and house productions." Cottam's trademark sample based house is back on this release. Delving into his box of records to produce some sample heavy cuts, slowed down to a sexy shuffling groove. On the A side is an edit of Dom Um Romao's legendary "Escravos de Jo" from 1976, first popularized by Joe Claussell and Kerri Chandler at the turn of the millennium. On the flip is an edit of Nena Love, a London-based singer of Ghanaian origin most renowned for her 1978 album Disco Documentary: where "I'm In Love" originally appeared. Cottam's edit distilling the groove into is raw element and its real saucy!

Review: From the tropics comes Whiskey Disco, a sneaky re-edit label bent on dredging the decanter for diffident dancefloor genius from latent disco perpetrators. It's loosely connected to Sleazy McQueen and his assorted cohorts. On the A side we have the one and only Osmose: DJ, digger, sound designer & producer but most of all: the originator of the Osmose Sound 7" Vinyl Record Stabilizer. He throws down some late night, deep down boogie business (on the very soulful tip) for the A side. On the flip, Thoma Cher makes his debut with some neon lit 80s disco vibes on "All You Need" while "Fright Night" is more on the Italo angle.

Review: "First Stomp", a bubbly chunk of Clavinet-laden electrofunk/Balearic fusion with Latin influences and clear nods to proto-house, was one of the highlights of Jex Opolis's recent debut album, Ravines. Here it gets the remix treatment, with the producer himself delivering a pair of club-ready interpretations. On the A-side you'll find the dreamy but club-ready "NYC Dub", a swirling, dreamy and loved-up affair that makes greater use of the original's Latin chants as well as some fresh new cowbell rhythms. The B-side "Vocal UP Mix" is an altogether more radical transition, with Jex Opolis re-imagining the cut as a cheery chunk of Puerto Rican proto-house complete with Latin piano riffs and locked-in drum machine percussion.

"Standing Still Is An Illusion" is a truly epic A-side as he invites Jazzanova's Paul Randolph, Will Sessions' Ryan Gimpert and Rocksteady Disco's own Topher Horn for a loose-limbed spiritual groove that evolves with vocal and drum-based magic.
