Review: Australian blog Disco Delicious has already dipped it's toes into the record label waters with the launch of Death Strobe last year and it's a label you should check, not least because Erol Alkan was dropping tracks from their second release during his recent Antipodean tour. The obvious passion for music demonstrated on the website should also ensure that the quality delivered on this twelve from Joystick Jay, the debut release on their new edit label is retained for future drops. Rich in an international flavour all too absent from the majority of edit releases these days, the Danish producer digs up a mind bogglingly good Fela Kuti rarity on the A Side, whilst the B Side holds a smooth South American disco yacht jam infused with subtle filtration and a delightfully soothing African communal track. Recommended for those who like to veer off the beaten track.

Open Heart Surgery
Goodnight Good Morning
Do You Need Someone
I Wrote The Book
Review: Iconic Gossip front lady Beth Ditto further dips her toes in clubland with this solo EP on the recently resurrected Deconstruction imprint. Lining her distinct tones musically is some typically classy production work from Simian Mobile Disco, further cementing a relationship that began with Ditto's appearance on SMD's last LP. Lead track "Open Heart Surgery" is truly infectious thanks to the simple yet far too effective synth stabs that run throughout, whilst the more laid back "Goodnight Goodmorning" has warm up material written all over it. It's the flipside track "Do You Need Someone" which proves to be most satisfying thanks to the squelchy electro rhythms and subaqueous squiggles.

New Moon
Travel (instrumental)
Review: The first 12inch of 2011 from Claremont 56 comes from Almunia, sadly not a shock production debut from Arsenal's erratic goalkeeper, rather a slinky, laidback Balearic odyssey. A Side cut "New Moon" glistens with that live disco sheen that permeates through every release from this fabulous little label, while the flipside is home to a fat analogue chugger that goes by the name "Travel", an understated epic in the making. A super release, and it gets better still - word is we've got a full length Almunia album on the way in March!

Please Love Me Again
West Coast Drive
Review: Revered by the elder statesmen of the beardo disco community in Harvey and Baldelli, the original pressing of this twelve from cultish cosmic French types Arpadys is the epitome of the phrase 'rare as hen's teeth' fetching silly money on the internet over the years. Presented here in remastered glory, it's more than worth indulging in with "Please Love Me Again" delivering a vintage string heavy strut backed with some heavenly female vocals (it also sounds quite good at 33rpm) "West Coast Drive" on the flip opts for a tight mid tempo bump drenched in intricate string and horn arrangements. Highly recommended.

The Source
The Source (Mudd's Slow Rave mix)
Review: Claremont 56 offshoot Leng becomes the latest illustrious label to be graced by the considered production excellence of Portugal's finest, Tiago. And gosh darn it if the producer hasn't delivered his finest solo work to date in the sprawling gothic disco of "The Source". A guttural acid gurgle and steady percussive throb are the constants on a track that soars through a multiplicity of heavily delayed and truly spellbinding effects. It's the gloriously fuzzy organ refrain that takes over as the track approaches the run out groove that marks the ascension of "The Source" into must-have material. Adding a further gloss of greatness is the accompanying Slow Rave Mix from Claremont/Leng overseer Mudd which brilliantly swamps the acid undertones in a thick viscous bottom end, adding some weight to the bass and introducing a superbly wigged out electro synth line which gets increasingly jagged as the remix progresses.

Morning Sun (Prins Thomas diskomiks)
Silent Speaking (DJ Garth & Anthony Mansfield remix)
Review: Adam Freeland's globetrotting band gets the bearded disco treatment, with Prins Thomas and San Fran types DJ Garth & Anthony Mansfield providing suitably hirsute reworks. It's the latter who impress most, channelling the ghosts of 80s industrial funkateers Cabaret Voltaire and Chakk for a heavily electronic re-cut of "Silent Speaking". It sounds like it was made in Sheffield rather than San Francisco, but that's no bad thing. Back on the A, Prins Thomas does his usual bang-up job, turning "Morning Sun" into a kraut-disco epic full of live drums, dubbed-out vocals and soaring strings. It's not so much 'cosmic' and 'scandolearic'.

Better Think Twice
Just Like Good Love
Do To Me
Hot Stop
Review: Runaway tyke Marcus Cabral was responsible for perhaps the best Party Breaks output to date with the extended brilliance of "Lifetime Groove" and he's back at the controls for On The Prowl's fifth Party Breaks release, offering up tweaks of vintage freestyle boogie, deep house and New Jersey style garage jackers. Naturally for a selector as gifted as Cabral, all the tracks here are arranged with club play in mind, leaning on raw drum machine programming and big vocals and melodies to hook your attention. The post disco Musiq Box stylings of "Better Think Twice" and the classic boompty stylings of "Non Stop" in particular are effective for exactly these reasons - some big old piano hooks on the latter!

Tales Of Mystery
Vae Victis
Mind Games
Epic
Dream
Review: After debuting last year with some decidedly throwback house antics for On The Prowl, and Mathematics, Simoncino starts the year with a full release for the prolific Italian imprint No More Hits. Retaining the feel of his initial output, you're gonna be hooked as soon as the heavily phased 80s electro bass drops in unison with the euphoric female vocals on opening track "Tales Of Mistery". Heavily drenched in rough 808 drums and dubbed out snares, it's a delight from start to finish. Following this "Vae Victis" is on a more atmospheric old skool electro tip, filled with swathes of ethereal pads, rasping kicks and hats and a deep deep bass line that retains prominence until the arrival of some decidedly outer galactic synth work! Proceedings are just as impressive on the flip too, with "Mind Games" standing out the most by flipping a late 80s vocal Chicago House classic with the introduction of some soft disco synth action.

Naruto (original version)
Naruto (Ronny & Renzo remix)
Review: After a string of excellent singles on ESP Institute - not least the brilliant Gomez land EP - Japanese duo Cos/Mes relocate to Belgium's King Kung Foo Records. "Naruto" is a typically eccentric treat, coming on like "Assassin" era Orb jamming with Mungolian Jetset after a particularly heavy night on the sauce. The percussion is slow, dense and delirious, the guitars languid and the pedal steel almost glistening with the sweat of steamy Hawaiian afternoons. Belgium's own Ronny and Renzo remix, utilising some of the original's dreamier elements in a late night techno workout that's satisfyingly hypnotic.

Shutters (extended 12" mix)
Shutters (extended dub mix)
Review: Tom Trago is a busy man. Here he takes time out from finalising "Iris" his forthcoming album and the epic Alfabet project (a collaboration with Awanto3, one half of Rednose Distrikt) to lay down a promo-only single. "Shutters" is in many ways typical Trago fare. It boasts that huggingly soft, atmospheric production for which he's renowned, clever use of instrumental soul samples (particularly after the second breakdown) and a nagging, relentless live bassline. It's heavy pace and thumping groove combine with his wall of sound production to great effect, too. The impeccable Extended Version is joined by an Extended Dub, which strips some of the soul samples to give a simpler, late night feel.

Move Groove (Warehouse mix)
Move Groove (Dr Dunks remix)
Move Groove (Vermin's Blackout remix)
Review: Chicken Lips main man Dean Meredith presents the first fruits of his new Rhythm Odyssey project and if you like bottom heavy throwback flexors that sound like they're lifted straight from a late eighties warehouse party in Chicago, then you want to be checking this. Meredith's own Warehouse Mix of "Move Groove" hogs the A Side, gradually teasing out an energetic piano melody that hugs the heavy analogue bass tightly, whilst a thumping jack groove aided by subtle flecks of cowbell and drum machine fills provides the requisite sweat inducing thrust. This is backed with a remix from Dr Dunks that slows the pace, ramps up the bass frequency and adds a delightfully reverberant beat to proceedings for a hypnotically narcotic version which reacquaints the piano melody with the depths of the mix before being thrust into your attention on a brilliant drop. Newcomer Vermin opts for a Model 500 meets Vibert perma retro electro reimagination that goes overboard on the 808 kicks and acid squiggles.
