Not Tonight: Dusk (8:42)
Acid Bath (Pursuit mix) (7:04)
Up & Atom (7:35)
Serial Malfunction (6:32)
Nightfall (4:07)
Review: Not all types of techno suits the album format, though that's not an accusation you could level at Derek Carr's particular brand of melodic, sci-fi-fired retro-futurism. "Pursuit Part 1" (a second volume will drop shortly) proves this point, delivering a suite of mostly club-ready cuts that can easily be listened to from start to finish in the comfort of your own home. It's full to bursting with warm, melodious, bass-heavy tackle, much of which combines his usual starry synths and deep space electronics with grooves which are far more influenced by dub techno than much of Carr's output. Highlights include the two-part "Not Tonight", the TB-303 powered "Acid Bath", and the glistening ambient/IDM lusciousness of "Nightfall".

The Golden Sea (4:55)
Aqua Marina (5:23)
Hostages Of The Deep (5:17)
Review: Ilian Tape overlords the Zenker Brothers have long been fans of Surgeon's brand of no-holds-barred, industrial-strength techno. While the Birmingham-born producer has previously played live at label events, this blistering three-tracker marks his first outing for the Munich based imprint. Interestingly, opener "The Golden Sea" is arguably a little dreamier and warmer than much of his output, with melancholic chords and bubbly electronic motifs riding a forthright and intergalactic techno groove. Elsewhere, "Aqua Marina" wraps more alien-sounding lead lines and shimmering chords around a more stripped-back, redlined rhythm track and "Hostages Of The Deep" sounds like a far-sighted fusion of classic Surgeon, Drexciya and Livity Sound.

Review: This New Year, Jeff Mills is inviting us to look inward in the form of his Every Dog Has Its Day series. The last time we had an installment came 17 years ago, just enough time for a periodical cicada to emerge from theground, finished with its former life as a nymph. The sixth edition of this series is soon to follow in spring dressed in brown, continuing to deliver a spiritual and emotional raft for you to see that Every Dog Has Its Day. Mills himself has said, "You never figure out life, you just get used to it." Reflected in this record is that sentiment, that life doesn't present to you the answers because there are none. What is right and just for you, may not be for me, so how can I share with you any secrets. Electronic music can act as a guide, a catalyst of your headspace; it is not the map.

No 70007 (part 1) (7:19)
No 70007 (part 2) (7:30)
Review: Man of many aliases Rene Pawlowitz has recorded under many pseudonyms over the years, though it's his Shed and Head High monikers that tend to get the most interest. Here he delivers a rare outing as Wax, a nom-de-plume he first used 11 years ago. A-side "No. 70007 (Part 1)" is a bona-fide techno club cut built around a rubbery rhythm track that boasts far more swing than your average Berlin production, with Pawlowitz's selected musical elements - drowsy, almost ghostly chords and slowly rising strings - only coming to the fore as the track progresses. The flipside "Part 2" version expertly re-arranges the same elements, breaking up the beats further while adding a druggy, almost metallic stab to add a frisson of intensity.

Pulsar (7:43)
Oedo 808 (5:32)
Blue Moon Tree (7:54)
Review: Lone is in a glassy-eyed and loved-up mood on this fourth instalment in his excellent "Ambivert Tools" series on R&S. We're particularly enjoying the lilting, soft-focus dreaminess of A-side "Pulsar", where swelling chords and poignant synth-strings sashay seductively between a densely layered, mid-tempo breakbeat groove. The long-serving producer ratchets up the energy on low-slung electro flipside "Oedo 808", another largely dreamy affair that boasts the twin attractions of raw acid style bass and ear-catching TR-808 drum machine cowbells. To finish things off, Lone serves up the EP's most blissfully loved-up moment, "Blue Moon Tree", whose bouncy pianos, fluttering vocal samples and languid chords sound like they were tailor-made for sunrise.

Lack - "Flutter" (5:10)
Tonto - "Rust" (4:31)
Chekov - "Fold" (F mix) (5:51)
Perfume Advert - "Mad Downer" (4:16)
Review: The Cong Burn crew are back with another of those buy-on-sight split 12"s. Once again they're focused on building up the community of artists orbiting the label, so it's great to see stellar returns from many of the names on here. Lack has a compelling take on broken beat techno to impart, all smudged out dubby atmospheres and off-centre beats. Tonto makes their debut appearance here with the stripped back echo chamber dread of "Rust", and Chekov twists things up with the angular bleeps and jagged time signature of "Fold". Perfume Advert seal the deal with "Mad Downer", an elegant shaker that juggles nagging sound design with mellow mood setters.

Review: The EYA Records crew continues their trip into a new musical direction with the Lonewolf series, this time offering up a split 12" between two distinctive techno producers. Bladymore Galaxy, otherwise known as Riccardo Buccirossi, brings some effervescent synthscapes to bear on his side of the record. There's an old-skool sensibility to the production - all uptempo drums and layer upon layer of sparkling sci-fi melodics - but there's equally a welcome fresh energy and emotional honesty embedded in Buccirossi's style that makes it so joyous to listen to. Belgian producer Innershades brings a punchier style informed by electro and trance - the perfect sound to lose yourself to as the dry ice creeps around and the sun starts rising over the dancefloor.

Hawav (4:33)
Review: Nuno Costa is back, and this time he's bringing his steely techno sound to Ben Sims' DJ-oriented Hardgroove label. "97-1" hits like a bullet - all dead-eye rhythmic barbs designed to dig its nails into any mix and not let go. "Field" is no slouch either, but there's a greater emphasis on space and atmosphere sculpting behind the tough percussion. "Breaker" is a chiseled, tunneling workout for the hours of ascendance on the dancefloor, while "Hawav" deals in knockout blows when you're on the ropes. Fierce stuff for those who want to make an impact.

Destination Mars (7:07)
Destination Mars (Raxon remix) (6:28)
Destination Mars (Shall Ocin remix) (7:05)
Review: While most Drumcode releases are suitably sizable, this EP is particularly large - and not just because it features two huge names in Maceo Plex and Josh Wink. Their original version (A1) is predictably robust and rugged with foreboding low register stabs, metallic clangs, druggy vocal snippets and creepy melodies rising above stomping techno beats. It's a genuinely all-action affair that sounds like a massive room anthem in waiting. Over on side B you'll find two re-rubs: a more melodious Raxon remix that sounds like tech-house on steroids and a deeper, darker, trance-inducing techno take by Shall Ocin.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: In an age of over-information, it's refreshing to see Aurora Halal take her time with the Mutual Dreaming label, which notches up just its third release since launching in 2014. It's also the New York scene leader's first record in three years, and it's worth the wait. Some elements are familiar - Halal still has a keen instinct for heavy-hearted synth lines shaped out in bold curves, but the level of expression going into these tracks makes each one stand out like a striking painting. From the eerie mood of "Fattal 22" to the crunchy bleep workout "Nasty II", the character just oozes out of Halal's productions. With a remix from Wata Igarashi thrown into the mix as well, this is a record loaded with fresh and powerful takes on techno.

Isolee - "Beau Mot Plage" (Mental Overdrive mix) (9:15)
Auto Kinetic - "Symetry" (Sensurreal Resong) (11:59)
Review: There have been many fine remixes of Isolee classic "Beau Mot Plage" over the years, but few quite as good as Norwegian legend Mental Overdrive's 2000 revision. Here the sought-after revision gets a deserved 20th anniversary reissue. It's notably looser than the original version, with loose, live sounding beats, densely layered percussion and heavy sub-bass underpinning the German producer's blissful, rush-inducing riffs and picturesque electronics. This time round it's accompanied by another near mythical revision - Sensurreal's wonderfully trippy, otherworldly techno revision of Auto Kinetic's "Symetry", which originally appeared on an ultra-limited, single-sided 12" way back in 1995.

Industrial Zone (4:10)
Review: Those cheeky herberts at Acid Waxa have invited Ayu Acid to have a right laff paying homage to the finest of 90s game shows through the medium of hi NRG video game acid. The Crystal Maze is a fine muse indeed, with each zone and the Crystal dome itself represented here. "Aztek Zone" is a sprightly, uptempo beast, while "Medieval Zone" ramps up the parping MIDI brass and canned harpsichord to deadly effect. "Crystal Dome Acid" is an appropriately boss-level jacker, while "Future Zone" slows things down and toughens up in remarkable fashion. "Industrial Zone" nudges a little swing into the mix and lets the 303 glide all over the shop.

Review: New York's Blkmarket has long been one of the city's finest underground parties. headed up by Taimur, it is now a fledgling label that is proving just as essential. The sixth outing is a new collaboration between electro producer Gosub and the boss himself. Up first is a tunnelling bit of deep, late night techno that is all about getting you lost in the groove and tripped out by the busy synth squiggles. The "Dark Path" mix is more hurried and urgent before electro takes over on the sci-fi styles of "Safe." "Phi" closes out this high grade and fad free EP in punchy fashion.

Sounds To Come (12:09)
Review: The joy of Sharif Laffrey's productions is the way that he's able to craft trippy, mind-altering epics using a sparse selection of elements - usually a couple of key samples, a drum machine, a TB-303 bass synth and copious amounts of brain-melting effects. He's at it again on "Sounds To Come", a 12-minute workout that seems designed for maximum hallucinatory impact. For the first five minutes it bubbles away menacingly on a bed of metallic drums, throbbing bass and wavy spoken word samples, before Laffrey ratchets up the weird noises and sharp electronics while playing with the effects. The results are spellbinding whether you're stone cold sober or completely intoxicated.

Clip (7:01)
One Three Five (5:48)
Review: Leeds renegade Happa makes his debut on the cult Whities label after years of cooking up some of club music's most unusual sounds. He continues with that trend here as he places the human voice front and centre. There are no trite cries of "oh yeh baby" here - instead, the producer mangles, twists, contorts, smears, cuts up and refracts cries, screams, yelps and laughs into textural elements that add depth and intrigue to brightly lit broken beat techno beats. "Clip" is shiny and upbeat, while "One Three Five" is weightier, with heavy, cavernous bass and manic melodies riding up and down the scale. Fantastic stuff.

Process 12 (7:10)
Review: Hot on the heels of debut album "Second Process" comes "Third Process", another no-holds-barred collection of cuts from all-star techno trio LSD (AKA scene heavyweights Luke Slater, Steve Bicknell and David Sumner). As with its predecessors, the three-track EP is full to bursting with raw, mind-altering club cuts seemingly crafted from modular and analogue sounds. They first wrap looped electronic bleeps and hissing cymbals around a heavy and hypnotic groove on "Process 10", before upping the percussive pressure and brain melting, acid-style electronics on the Surgeon-esque sleaze of "Process 11". Without breaking stride, they then reach for the psychedelic electronics and restless stabs on marginally deeper closing cut "Process 12".

Just A Ride (6:21)
Review: Cardopusher's latest release - the Barcelona-based artist's first for Mechatronica - is pleasingly retro-futurist in tone, building on the stylish fusions of EBM, industrial, new wave, acid and techno he's previously offered up on Dark Entries, Boysnoize, Dalmata Daniel and Super Rhythm Trax. Rooted in analogue hardware, the four tracks mix druggy, Nitzer Ebb style arpeggio basslines and clattering, sometimes jacking rhythm tracks with distant vocal samples and occasional hard-edged, mind-altering electronic motifs. It's all very muscular, forthright and dancefloor-focused, with the deliciously raw and druggy "Just A Ride" and soaring "Programmed To Consume" - all rising lead lines, big chords and bustling machine drums - standing out.

Sticky Disko (3:43)
Analog Acidbath (3:52)
Review: Finnish producer Dan Kaipio is a one-man project behind Type-303, based in Tampere. Inspired by various styles of music, from classic '80s acid and '90s rave to the house sound of today, he is an avid vinyl collector and can be found spinning at underground parties across Finland. But above all, he has a taste for the acid life - as displayed on the new rave anthem here entitled "Sticky Disco" with its jacked samples and the signature squelch and squeal of the TB-303 over hip-house beats - absolutely mental! On the flip he offers up some straight forward acid techno fare on "Analog Acidbath" which is as euphoric and mind altering as the name suggests.

Review: This time last year, Rome-based DJ/producer Adiel joined forces with fellow Italian techno heavyweight Donato Dozzy to deliver the first collaborative release on her Danza Tribale label. 12 months on she's back with another joint effort, this time in cahoots with Northern Electronics artist Anthony Linell. The pair conjure feverish, mind-altering aural textures, psychedelic acid motifs and restless drums on opener "Raso", before opting for a denser and arguably even more intense, moody and throbbing techno sound on "Decoro". Arguably best of all, though, is flipside "Punto In Aria", a surging fusion of chugging industrial bass, ghostly chords, metallic sounds and foreboding, brain-melting bass.

Strange Attractors (7:59)
Creation (6:07)
Review: Astonishingly, "Chaos Game" is the eighth collaborative EP from Ohm (Bjarnar Jonsson) and Octal Industries (Jonas Thor Gudmundsson) since 2016. Like its predecessors, it offers a tough, club ready take on dub techno that peppers a variety of chunky, peak-time grooves with undeniably spacey elements. The best of the bunch - in our opinion at least - is opener "Breather", where dubbed-out synthesizer riffs and echoing chords bubble along over sparse beats before the Scandinavian pair bring in a heavy beat midway through. Elsewhere, "Strange Attractors" is hypnotic, odd and otherworldly, while closing cut "Creation" is the most dub-fired of the lot, largely because its hazy vocal samples and riffs pay tribute to soundsystem culture in the best possible way.

Review: Fresh from dropping a suitably forthright EP on Mistress Recordings, Anthony Rother returns to Danny Daze's OMNIDISC imprint for the first time since 2017. The long-serving German producer is in fine form from the word go, with opener "Machine" offering a particularly mind-altering blend of broken techno rhythms, wayward electronic motifs, electro sassiness, deep space sounds and robotic, Kraftwerk style vocal snippets. You'll find more vocal nods towards the Dusseldorf legends on "Compute Me", a dark, throbbing and mind-mangling techno stomper, while "Rubber Skirt" is an angular but funky romp through distorted electro territory. Like the rest of the cuts on the EP, it's deliciously weighty and peak-time ready.
