Incubation (Ritual)

Voiceprint (reprise)
Psychic Warfare
Review: It seems incredible to think that despite his nearly 20 years of prodcution experience, Dave Sumner hasn't released a full Function album until this year. Thankfully Incubation proves it's been well worth the wait with the Sandwell District member really stretching his legs out for one of those techno albums that is most definitely an album experience. This nine track set bristles with great ideas and murky atmospherics, combining dystopian sci-fi soundtrack textures with the precision techno he's become known for. There are robust dancefloor tracks - see the murky acid techno of "Against The Wall" and sweaty "Modifier" - but also moments of intense, melodic beauty, from the crystalline bliss of "Counterpoint", to the dreamy hypnotism of "Inter (album version)".

Elgol
Galicia
Timber Lorries Emerging
Review: Following his prime edit material for Cole Medina's American Standard label, Scottish producer Lord Of The Isles has seen original productions land on the likes of Cocktail d'Amore, Ene, and his own Little Strong as well as gracing the Phonica Special Edition Series. Now he arrives on Shevchenko for the label's seventh release, with three tracks representing the many shades and hues of his production palette. "Elgol" sees the producer venture into similarly impressionistic house territory as Legowelt, with nebulous organ chords joined by loosely jacking drums and gentle acid textures. On the flip, "Galicia" delivers a deep jam with all the same free-flowing analogue tendrils and luscious bass, while "Timber Lorries Emerging" combines a bassline with a John Carpenter-inspired tension with neo-Balearic soul, a combination that works a lot better in practice than you'd expect. As with all Shevchecnko releases clear vinyl and exceptional music is the order of the day - highly recommended.

Drive (The Age Of Automation)
Drive (The Age Of Automation) (Phase Nocturnal mix)
Drive (The Age Of Automation) (Phase C box mix)
Review: One of the more driving cuts from Robert Hood's epic Motor: Nighttime World 3 from last year, "Drive (The Age Of Automation)" finds itself getting a welcome slice of wax all to itself on this release. Pressed up loud, the original is about as Detroit as you can get, where a moody motorik bassline gives way to suitably sci-fi synths, combining a musical take on Detroit's automotive history with a Blade Runner aesthetic. Token artist Phase obviously revels in the opportunity to provide two brilliant reworks of the track; the "Nocturnal Mix", which isolates the original's bass stabs and incorporates them into a rolling juggernaut rhythm tailor made for the warehouse, while the "C-Box Mix" opts to keep the melodic elements but pare them back with the producer's trademark sharpness.

Half Nelson
Positive Neckline
Touch This Skin
I Notice You All
Review: News of Surgeon and Blawan working together as Trade for the fifth Works The Long Nights release was unexpected, though hardly surprising given how supportive the former has been of the latter and his fellow UK techno producers in recent times. Unsurprisingly given the calibre of the artists involved, the results pretty spectacular, even taking into account the fact the genre is in something of a purple patch at the moment. "Half Nelson" sees frazzled synths dragged kicking and screaming across savage kickdrums and incomprehensible vocals, while "Positive Neckline" pairs ripcord bass and relentless stabs stabs with frenetic hi-hats. On the flip, "Touch This Skin" dangles its rattling drums like a flayed man hanging from the gallows while "I Notice You All" combines acidic bass with a mechanical rhythm that nevertheless seems irregular in its makeup. While Surgeon's solo material has always hit hard, it's always been characterised by a cleaner sound, but with Blawan in tow things are as rough around the edges as the latter's Karenn material, and it's something very welcome indeed.

Phenomenal
Phenomenal (Substance remix)
Review: As a staunch representative of Midwest techno since the mid-nineties, Fanon Flowers has always skirted on the periphery of the scene rather than getting placed on the pedestal many of his neighbours do, but this return to UK's Sect Records sees a further widening of his reach, with this particular record embracing his dub techno side with a cavernous chord deployment and plenty of metallic hits. Substance is on deadly form for the remix, trimming said chord down to a fine point and adding some welcome funk into the arrangement to a thoroughly engrossing end.

Cold Light (Sektor A)
Cold Light (Sektor B)
Review: Expert attention to detail across all visual and sonic elements is present and correct once again on this sick release from the Avian nest. Label co-founder Shifted is at the helm, presenting the first of a two part Cold Light series; "Cold Light Sektor A" is all about the contrast between elements as the near incandescent lightness of those dubby chords battles with the growing weight of Shifted's sludgy rhythmic arrangements. Complementing this, "Sektor B" opts to burrow down a plinking locked groove making it a perfect DJ tool.

Waiting For Love 3
Waiting For Love 4
Review: Samuel Kerridge was responsible for one of 2012?s most remarkable and self assured debuts in the form of the Auris Interna EP, whose grimy, slow-motion soup recalled the likes of Andy Stott and Powell, and made a stark contrast to the imprint's usual precision techno. Given the producer's experimental tendencies and the undeniably gothic qualities present in his work, it comes as little surprise that Kerridge's latest EP comes on Regis' Downwards label. Entitled Waiting For Love, the record takes the form of a track in four parts which run the gauntlet between white hot noise, moody, dubbed out techno and living, breathing drone, all mastered by Russell Haswell. His debut was auspicious enough, but this is next level - terrifying, absorbing and beautiful in equal measure.

Hyperspace Gate
Bumpa
Throw Up (Naple Ave)
Review: .Rome label Institution launches in style with this killer transmission from Hakim Murphy! True House heads will know Murphy has been stuck in a quality groove for some time now, marrying a prolific nature with endless creativity and the three tracks here ensure his high standards remain so. Lead track "Hyperspace Gate" cuts deep into the A Side, rolling out worming freeform analogue intricacies over thick bass with the occasional percussive tumble lending proceedings that left leaning slant. Slip down to 33rpm on the flip and the groove to "Bumpa" is little more than well timed pin pricks on the atmosphere to begin with, yet swiftly builds momentum into a hemmed in, low slung bump that threatens to spill over. "Throw Up (Naple Ave)" is even more stripped back but does contain some glorious plump Spectrum style analogue bleeps!

SCB - "Dissipate"
Basic Soul Unit - "Untoward"
Review: Cherry picking jams from the much anticipated Think & Change compilation, Nonplus offer up a second sneak peak at what will be on offer, and in the case of SCB and Basic Soul Unit, it's very much techno. Ploughing big room dynamics into a bleak and hostile soundscape like only he knows how, SCB is on fearsome form with "Dissipate", letting a slowly rising synth hurtle towards tomorrow, buoyed by the sturdy undercarriage of kick. Basic Soul Unit instead opts for an outsider approach, letting vaporous blasts form percussion and the groove to fall at a funny angle. Don't worry though, there's a trusty 303 bubbling away in the middle of the choppy waves.

Last Anthem
Embrace
Review: Scientists recently discovered that Boris Bunnik can function on just one hours sleep a day, which goes a great deal to explaining how the Dutch producer is so damn prolific! He returns to the Delsin label under his widely regarded Conforce moniker for the four track Time Dilation EP, with the label describing it as "designed for deeper dancefloors". One listen and you'll agree as Bunnik seemingly plunges further down the dub techno wormhole for a more cerebral experience than his lauded Clone Basement 12" last year. There is room for a banger however, with "Last Anthem" combining ethereal ambience alongside prickly staccato stabs and an insistent kick drum that could almost be described as ghetto house-inspired.

Developer - "Sequence 85"
Developer - "Sequence 88"
Psyk - "Transito"
Rhomb - "Reboot"
Review: Creeping ever closer towards their third year of existence, Modularz have remained steadfast in their aesthetic approach, deftly combining the dynamism of straight up techno with an intricately textured approach that has proved enduringly rewarding. Label boss Developer once again features prominently on this Part One 12" of their tenth entry, contributing two A Side cuts to the face down contributions from Psyk and Rhomb. The expansive bassline to the opening track "Sequence 85" practically consumes you, with Developer's subsequent production "Sequence 88" is markedly sparser, allowing the rigid percussion and booming kicks centre stage. Last seen on Mote Evolver, Spaniard Psyk adds further balance with the subaqueous dub techno of "Transito" whilst the unknown quantity Rhomb is on electrifying form with the Mike Parker-esque "Reboot".

Developer - "Mover Of The Mercury"
Developer - "Gaining"
Elyas - "Camberwell"
Ascion - "The Exporter"
Review: Modularz' commitment to straight up yet intricately textured techno continues, with part 2 of its tenth entry featuring label head Developer joined by another two kindred spirits in the form of Ascion and Elyas. Developer takes up the A-side with two tracks; "Mover Of The Mercury" combines linera, tribal drumming and bleak, distant drones, while "Gaining" is imbued with a surprisingly funky character a la Gesloten Cirkel, as dark synth horns snake around precision drums. On the flip, Elyas' "Camberwell" may seem to take its name from one of South London's more picturesque locations, but the slamming techno stabs and granite drums are anything but polite, recalling Shed's Equalized material; Ascion rounds things off with the trippiest cut on the record, as savage waveforms twist themselves around abstract atonal beeps.

Btx1

Btx3
Review: Len Faki is no stranger to Ostgut Ton having mixed the label's third and possibly hardest sounding Berghain CD back in 2009. Whilst the Berlin fixture has remained resolutely busy since then, Faki has remained absent from the OSTGUT catalogue numbers. Until now that is as the Basement Trax Vol 1 12" signals Faki's return to Ostgut colours in impressive and diverse fashion. Lead track "Btx1" is dominated by the heavily processed treatment of some orgasmic sounding female vocals which are submerged deep in the mix and smeared greedily across the channels chased by whip cracking percussion. The flipside accompaniment "Btx2" is a tougher version with the tribalistic percussion gradually consumed by the vastness of Faki's string arrangements and the final version "Btx3" sees Faki present a swirling mass of ambient calm. How good would it be to hear this at 2pm on a Sunday in Berghain?

Strangers Shores
Review: Tales from the Night Sky (Part 1) sees Perseus Traxx continue to mine the acid house past of Chicago across four tracks. Unlike some of his less imaginative contemporaries however, this producer's productions gargle with a frenzied density that shows his own distinctive take on the period. Lead track "Gorgon" has an acid line to rival Laurent X's "Machines", but its main focus is the interplay between the distorted drums and the trance inducing melodies. Complementing this, "Poseidon's Monster" opts for a primitive jacking approach but the unexpected highlight is "Stranger Shores". Here Rogers explores a slower tempo and fashions delicate melodies that are in stark contrast to what precedes it.

Dormancy Survivors
Victors History
Review: The latest Mote Evolver release sees a collaboration so obviously perfect its amazing its taken this long, as Stroboscopic Artefacts boss Lucy and Sandwell District alumnus Silent Servant team up for two tracks of precision techno which supposedly sees the pair using digital and analogue elements together to combine Lucy's ability to tell a story with Silent Servant's mastery of noise and distortion. "Dormancy Survivors" sees a steadily rolling rhythm slowly layered up with bright dub chords and echoing chimes, while white hot noise swells in the background. "Victors History" takes a much moodier approach from the off, as a dubby bass deflects bouncing stabs while clockwork percussion drifts in and out of range, before progressing into full blown cinematic techno towards the finish.

Tumulto (Yuji Kondo remix)
Tumolto (Shifted remix part two)
Review: Bethany Busto's fledgling relationship with the Semantica label might not have followed the traditional path but continues to reap rewards. Having been introduced to Svreca's label via a Shifted remix of "Tumulto" last year, Skirt now reappears on Semantica brandishing the original version along with another remix from the Avian boss and Japanese producer Yuji Kondo. "Tumulto" ripples with foreboding intensity, rhythm being only an intermittent concern as various frames of mood shift into focus - if you are after thought provoking, contemplative techno then you should investigate. Kondo's remix applies a lot more throttle, conjuring up a thick, sludgy groove that makes you feel as if the walls are closing in on you, whilst Shifted's second remix is a perfect example of his detailed techno detonations.

Review: Originally released on Dance Mania in 1997, Chicago house legend Robert Armani's classic track "Arrow" finds itself the subject of a re-release on Chiwax's Classic Edition series alongside three other thumping tracks from the archive. ON the A-side "Muzik Man" pairs thumping kicks with detuned synthetic bass guitar textures in a classic ghetto house style, while the classic "Arrow" pares things down with its low slung, deep Chicago grooves. Flip mover for "Poison Mind", which offers a dubbier take on the Dance Mania template with swirling chords and abstract yelps circling above thunderclaps of analogue interference, while "The Power" pairs 90s house stabs with floor shaking beats to round off an essential record for Dance Mania enthusiasts.

Re-Televised (Lucy remix)
Re-Televised (Donor/Truss vinyl edit remix)
Re-Televised (original 1998 version)
Review: Throughout the '90s and early 2000s, the Missile imprint was responsible for releasing a slew of blistering techno cuts from production heavy weights DJ Hyperactive, Inigo Kennedy, Frankie Bones and DJ Slip. In 1998 the label released Heiko Laux's Re-Televised EP, which 15 years later (can you believe it) has earned itself a repressing on New York imprint Thema. It has commissioned two 2013 remixes in Donor and Truss, the labels New York connection and Stroboscopic Artefacts boss man Lucy. Haux's original may lack the weight of their modern day reworks, but its stone-crunch kicks certainly don't lack punch. Donor & Truss share the B-Side with Haux's exemplar, creating a quintessential '90s infinity loop, intermittently injecting a rough samples from "Re-Televised". Lucy's remix remains loopy also, only adding dour and industrial atmospherics, unsettling children's voices and Strobo's trademark low end.

The Exaltics - "The Midnight Connexion"
The Exaltics - "Nichts Aber Auch Nichts"
Elec Pt 1 - "Drei Chinesen Mit Dem Acidbass"
Elec Pt 1 - "The Player"
Review: Elect Pt1 becomes the latest collaborator in The Exaltics Meets series following prior introductions to Morphology and Gosub. For the uninitiated, Elect Pt1 was part of Bunker Records' second coming, originally '90s acid house label based out of the Hauge, said to have funded their earlier releases with "money made from selling LSD (silver surfers!)". German speakers will be able to decipher Elect Pt1's "Drei Chinesen Mit Dem Acidbass", a potential retrospective nod to Bunker's (now legendary) "acid planet" squat parties. A flabby kick, crushed hats and white noise sounding more like a baby robot tantrum than synthesis opens "The Party", before unexpected doo-doo-doo vocals become the tracks centrepiece. The Exaltics opens his side of the 12" with throbbing drums and hardedge acid in "The Midnight Connexion", which later gives way to uplifting chords. Acid and breakneck drum loops make up "Nichts Aber Auch Nichts" which also receives some euphoric synth treatment.

Bleak - "What We Are Made For"
Dario Zenker - "Port De La Dimanche"
Abdulla Rashim - "Awash River"
Behzad & Amarou - "Batiment 21"
Review: The Concrete parties that run for 19 hours on a Sunday have been integral in the rebirth of Parisian clubbing culture, and its own label endeavour which it began earlier this month with a 12" featuring the likes of Awanto 3 and Jared Wilson looks to be the perfect extension of their brand. While the first 12" was made up of relatively lighter house fare, this second seems to go for peak time selections and kicks off with "We Are Made For", a typically deep slice of throbbing analogue loop techno from Swedish producer Bleak, joined on the A-side by Time To Express artist Dario Zenker's "Port De La Dimanche", which combines heaving 909 kicks with sharp dub chords and deep square wave bass in a similarly contemporary fashion. On the flip, Prologue's Abdulla Rashim contributes "Awash River", an intricately texture piece of simmering acid techno which weaves around feathered kick drums; it's a stark contrast to the most impressive track on the release, "Batiment 21" from Behzad & Amarou, a slamming joint that combines loud, jacking drums with severe industrial textures, with a brief moment of house-inspired respite at the mid point which provides an inspired meeting of old and new school.
