Tetrahymena (5:09)
Gene Silencing (4:04)
Zygote (4:14)
Review: The somewhat mysterious Dopplereffekt project founded by Drexciya's Gerald Donald ends their six year production hiatus with this Tetrahymena EP for Berlin label Leisure System. Established by Donald in the mid '90s, Dopplereffekt remain one of techno's most enigmatic propositions with their brand of cold, stark electro complemented by a bold, Cold War-indebted aesthetic and a general disregard for performing live or giving interviews. Though Donald has remained active production wise, developing the NRSB-11 project with DJ Stingray which recently saw the release of the politically loaded Commodified album, the Tetrahymena EP is a welcome return for Dopplereffekt and undoubtedly the most high profile release yet from Leisure System.

Never Stray From the Path
Spooky Kind Of Love
Review: Vincent Koreman's decision to focus productions under the DRVG CLTVRE banner has paid dividends for the multi-faceted Dutch producer; last year's Everything Oblivion LP for his Snug Life label has been complemented by some fine turns on Viewlexx, Gooiland, Pinkman and now Porn Wax. The 10" shaped little brother of Tusk Wax has proved pleasantly hard to pin down since it launched and this pink slab of Koreman naughtiness adds to the label's sense of diversity. Lead track "Never Stray From The Path" chugs along with industrial force, powered by grotty Tilburg force whilst "Spooky Kind Of Love" allows Koreman to show off his talent for codeine addled 303 manipulations over a gurgling beat.

Swarm
Hard Work
Review: Absent since serving up a VIP issue of Off The Traxx earlier this year, Mensah dons his New York Transit Authority alias for some more crowd pleasing bass-house cross pollinations on Redlight's Lobster Boy label. Lead track "Swarm" should be familiar to most; it's been a digital dubplate weapon in the New York Transit Authority armoury for some time now, first surfacing online in his F/\CT mix last year! Rolling 808 pressure and throwback hoover raves combine with repeated "NYTA" vocal chants for an exercise in relentless dancefloor fodder. On the flip "Hard Work" sees NYTA doing edit heavy 90s house with plenty of chord stabs and drum fills.

Review: Having inaugurated NRSB-11 with a self titled 12" on WeMe last year, the pairing of Gerald Donald and DJ Stingray return to the project in more expansive fashion here with Commodified, a full album for the Belgian label. NRSB-11 represents the first time the pair has worked together directly; Although Ingram was commonly billed as "Drexciyan DJ Stingray" in the early stages of his career, he wasn't actively involved in Drexciya beyond his duties as official tour DJ for the iconic subaquatic electro pair of Donald and the late James Stinson. The twelve track album sounds exactly as one might imagine from this pairing, with the subaqueous strains of the sonics augmented by a socio political undertone that goes far beyond the track titles.

Review: Sitting somewhere between the galaxy-sized ambient washes of ASC and the gritty, snub-nosed acid angularity of Hardfloor, Robert Witschakowski's Exaltics project represents everything that's great about the furtive creative pastures found between techno and electro. Ranging from the slinky deep space breakbeat adventures of 'Neun' to the lo-fi acid techno stomp session that is "Elf" via the dreamy, oceanic percussive "Zehn" and the full-throttle body-slammer "Acht", this highly-varied, yet solidly consistent package show Robert at his most accomplished and extensive. Sign up to his experiment today.

Review: The excellent Newcastle based label Signals recommences broadcasting after a period of quiet with this quite compelling transmission from the mysterious producer Black Narcissus X. Described as "a clandestine and sometime Rephlex UK producer," Black Narcissus X aligns with Signals for a self titled six track mini LP that veers through the crawl space between Drexciyan theme-tunes and the more playful scope of electro you might hear on Dublin label Lunar Disko Records. This release also comes with the most immense of press releases from Signals HQ: "High up in an isolated valley in the Himalayas a group of Anglican nuns reside in a former 'House of Women'. The Palace of Mopu, near Darjling, is the setting for emotional tensions, sexual repression and psychological drama."

Sugarcoated (Scott Fraser Baudot Code Rewire)
Cybosapien
Flash (Beau Wanzer Adjustment)
Review: The newly forged CGI label debuts with a 12" release from Featureless Ghost, a Atlanta-via- Brooklyn duo hotly tipped with the online content farm after releases on the Crash Symbols and Night People labels. Describing themselves simply as 'synths/rhythms/voices/moods' the Featureless Ghost pairing of Matt Weiner and Elise Tippins occupy the crawl space between synth pop, wave, industrial and nascent forms of techno, which manifests itself in two intriguing original tracks in "Sugar coated" and "Cybersapien". Kudos to CGI for the remix commissions too, with both Scott Fraser and Beau Wanzer excelling - the latter's take on previous FG single "Flash" is a particular highlight here.

Forest With Creature
Hideous Dwarf
Amorphous Form
Invisible Creatures
Invisible Creatures Attack
Thing In Jungle
Review: Sharp sounds, ace titles; there's little not to like to this mini LP. While they're hardly prolific, this Scottish/Irish duo have always delivered quality when they do release their creations (as proved by their work on Heatray Records). Exploring the elements of classic electro while bending aspects such as time and tempo, each of these cuts sings a different robot hymn; "Invisible Creatures" is all woozy and downtempo while its reprise "Invisible Creatures Attack" is a much darker piece of work with staccato synth squiggles and a gritty analogue lead loop. "Amorphous Form" is perhaps the most interesting take on electro as it shimmers with real cosmic glee. "Thing In The Jungle" is also worthy of note; all fractured and stuttering, it's as close to jazz as electro can get. Those hungry for a more obvious Detroitian edge should jump on the likes of "Hideous Dwarf" and "Forest With Creature". Fiendishly good.

DIN - "You Are"
Virginia - "Pulse"
Crushed Soul - "Shades"
Function - "Golden Dawn" (feat Stefanie Parnow)
Review: Ostgut Ton ain't just house, techno and concrete, they're ambient, experimental, electro and musique concrete. This is the biggest compilation the label has released since they let Emika run wild in a closed Berghain and Panorama Bar to capture sounds of the humming club for 2010's Funf compilation. Barker & Baumecker and Fiedel saw releases on that compilation and now they contribute a track each to Ostgut Ton's abstract Various LP. B&B offer up some dubby frenetics in "Meiose" while Fiedel supplies some melodica and two step rhythms in "Grunewald2". Tobias' "Dark & Troubling Things" share a similar beatless murk to music from Canadian ambient artist Loscil, while Rolando's track "Neglected" is a stand out. DIN adds some minimally-charged Chicago house to the LP, while Virginia and new name Crushed Soul opt for something more electro. Dave Sumner then seals Various with a primitive "Golden Dawn" featuring Stefanie Parnow for something totally different to what Function fans are accustomed to.

Boring Dolls
Review: Fresh from fusing techno with vintage nudey flicks, the mysterious Annechoic returns with another frosty mission statement... With more emphasis on broken beats, there's a strong sense of abstraction as the icy rhythms cut through the swooning, groaning waves of warm synths on tracks such as "Sick Through The Looking Glass" and "Anhedonia". Other tracks like "Encoding" are delivered at a much slower pace, presenting a more reflective sense of space that's gradually overshadowed by a growing, growling acid line. We climax with the poignant melancholia of "Boring Dolls". All one note piano strikes and haunted house backing, it's not dissimilar to a Trentemoller record.

Review: Having previously explored Chicago boogie and the roots of the Windy City's house scenes, Jerome Derradji's Still Music imprint turns its attention to the story of the largely unheralded Sunset Records Inc. A collaboration between Matt Warren, Miguel Garcia and Ralphie Rosario, the label blurred the boundaries between European-influenced sounds (specifically Italo, new wave and industrial) and "beat tracks" - what would become the city's greatest musical export: house. There's some terrific material here, from the touchy-feely piano house of Warren's "You Know The Way To My Heart" and freestyle/proto house fusion of White Knight's "Demons (A Mix 2 U)", to the dense disco drums of Master Plan's "Electric Balle (Large Dub)" and the foppish, Human League-go-Italo foppishness of Boom Boom & Master Plan's "Face The Music".
