Review: Every so often, a compilation comes along and delivers a snapshot of a city's underground music scene at a given moment in time. That's what compilers Rick Wilhite and Delano Smith have achieved with Parabellum Detroit, an expansive and predictably high-quality collection of cuts from some of the Motor City's finest producers. They naturally provide a couple of collaborative cuts of their own - the spacey, late-night techno hypnotism of '11 Minutes of Funk' and the intergalactic deep house drift of 'Neo Solaris', while there are also top-notch contributions from Javontte (the warm, soul-flecked deep house of 'Late Night Love'), Marcellus Pittman (beatdown chugger 'Everybody Party'), Gerald Mitchell AKA Soul Saver (the incredible 'Kaori'), the Moodymann Kenny Dixon Jr ( 'I'm Goin' Back') and Omar-S (a tidy Godson remix of 'VAT 69').

Reminiscence (6:43)
Difference (6:28)
Fusion (7:13)
Feelin (6:42)
Review: The third release on Chris Stussy's new imprint comes from Frenchman Janeret, who for the past few years has done a fine job curating the Joule imprint, presenting the very best in contemporary tech house and dub techno flavours. Those styles are most certainly on display on the Difference EP, with swing-fuelled opener 'Reminiscence' calling to mind that classic Cabinet Records vibe of old, as well as the rolling and cavernous 'Fusion' which will engulf you and draw you into its glacial realm. On the flip, the emotive and sensual closer 'Feelin' goes deep, this is proper mood music for the warm-up or afterhours alike.

A Love Supreme Exodus (Ron Trent dub mix) (8:03)
A Love Supreme Exodus (Eqwel dub Bass mix) (6:01)
A Love Supreme Exodus (5:00)
Review: On paper, combining Coltrane jazz classic 'A Love Supreme' and Bob Marley's 'Exodus' in a Cuban jazz style seems like an odd idea, but as Joe Clausell and pianist Matt Jenson proved on their 2013 album as Rebel Tumbao, it's actually a genius one. For proof, check out the original mix, which is tucked away on the flipside of this belated remix EP. The real star attraction though is Ron Trent's A-side remix, which brilliantly re-images the track as a skanking chunk of slow-motion dub house complete with echoing vocal snippets, reverb-laden pianos and plenty of Latin and African style hand percussion. Eqwel's accompanying 'Dub Bass Mix', a more glitchy, electronic affair, is also well worth a listen.

Essence Of A Dream (6:44)
Risque Madness (5:14)
Review: Dark Entries is again presenting an essential classic: the Chicago house anthem Essence of a Dream, by Risque III. K'Alexi Shelby's illustrious career has included releases on legendary labels such as Trax, DJ International, and Transmat, as well as collaborations with high profile artists such as Marshall Jefferson and Pet Shop Boys. But his musical journey began at the young age of 12, when he befriended Ron Hardy and Frankie Knuckles while frequenting the Music Box and Warehouse. In high school, he began to write songs and hone his poetic craft. "I recognized I had a gift to say what I was thinking. I would study Prince and Marvin Gaye, figure out what they meant and put my spin on it. The power of the word. I was writing love notes for all my boys in high school and making a killing. I would know what to say and what they should do." In 1987, Shelby's first solo release, Risque III's "Essence of a Dream" b/w "Risque Madness," was to be cemented in Chicago dance history. He was accompanied in the studio by his cousin and production mentor, Mr. Lee. The track's effortlessly propulsive house rhythms (courtesy of the Roland TR-727, TR-707, and TR-909), salsa-inflected bassline, and oneiric strings fuse magnificently with K'Alexi's steamy, Prince-esque verse. Due to tight studio schedule times, his vocals were almost omitted. Says Shelby: "The session was coming to an end and I said I wanted to put the vocals on there. They said, 'We got no time unless you can get your vocals right in one take'. I said, 'Let it rip' and went into the vocal booth...they just stood there with their mouths open. The look on their faces was priceless." The B-side's "Risque Madness" is a tribute to Ron Hardy, DJ at the Music Box and one of K'Alexi's formative influences. The track opens with Shelby's processed voice announcing "I'd like to talk to you about escape. Let me take you away, away to a place where rhythm is life, and life is a never ending sound." This introduction captures how he felt dancing to disco every week at the Music Box. Hardy was known for playing an edit of Kikrokos' "Life is a Jungle," in which he looped the track's lysergic breakdown. Shelby utilizes the same delirious loop but builds upon it with additional percussion, melodies, samples from Hardy favorite "Let No Man Put Asunder" by First Choice, and manipulated vocals taken from The Madam's "The Sensuous Black Woman", a recording used often in early Chicago house DJ sets and recordings. Both sides of this record perfectly reflect the spirit of Chicago house music. Essence of a Dream has been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. The sleeve was designed by Eloise Leigh, and features a never-before-seen photo of a teenage Shelby taken at his high school, with a bold font evoking 80's house music covers. Also included is a postcard with lyrics, an additional photo from the same session as the cover artwork, and liner notes from Shelby.

Review: Move D is an absolute mainstay of the European house scene. He is the sort of DJ who unites the heads and the party people - he can do big sets with dazzling highs and hands in the air moments but always with a sense of class, just as well as he can do super heady vibers that keep the ID hunting crew happy. This cult record harks back to 1993, when it was one of his first 12" records on Time Unlimited. It features raw, basement house with 90s samples and organ bass, upbeat sleazers and bubbling grooves that exude timeless cool.

Journey On (6:44)
More To Be Done (5:02)
Looking At The Sky (11:28)
Review: This the first in a series of limited Private Society vinyl releases, with special and exclusive songs by American artist Fred Peterkin. The spiritual life music of 'Journey On' is in the vein of his other known Black Jazz Consortium alias, followed by the deep and soulful broken beat of 'More To Be Done'. On the flip, it's all about the 12 minute long, glassy-eyed and bittersweet epic 'Looking At The Sky', awash in syncopated tribal rhythms, gorgeous female vocals and a rich tapestry of ethereal pads. On Private Society Vol 1, the New York turned Berlin resident continues to push further into his own sound, craft and mind.

Review: Dobro are packing the heat in on this second 12", bringing us six refined slices of deep house goodness from some emergent operators to keep tabs on. Hurlee is up first with the honey-coated keys and dusty bump of 'Pel Meu Per Tu', while Igor Gonya whips up some oh so sweet soul licks and straps them to a sprightly, skipping beat. Cosmocomics get seriously soulful, MuteNoise brings a heavy disco edit flavour, Jeff The Fool pitches squarely at the peak time, and Will Sonic rounds things off on a positively dreamy tip without letting the floor-friendly vibes slip.

Review: Frankie Knuckles collaborated with Eric Kupper for many years, but it was arguably only when they joined forces as Director's Cut, late in the Godfather of House's lengthy career, that the most musical magic happened. This excellent compilation of Director's Cut productions and remixes- the third to date remixes - offers further proof of this assertion. Full of colourful, tactile, classic-sounding house in the typical Knuckles mode, the collection's many highlights include a soulful, sing-along interpretation of Inaya Day and Duane Harden's 'Good Feeling', the piano-smothered brilliance of Peyton's 'Beautiful', a wonderfully shuffling, organ-rich rendition of Marko Militano's 'Good People' and a simply sublime, glassy-eyed take on Vintage Lounge Orchestra's memorable cover of Fleetwood Mac classic 'Dreams'.

Downtown (Louie Vega Downtown Disco dub mix) (7:36)
Review: Honey Dijon's first outing of 2021, 'Downtown', sounds like a summer 2021 anthem in the making. A retro-futurist house workout featuring vocals from Annette Bowen and Nikki O whose lyrics celebrate the joys of dancing to underground dance music, the track is powered forwards by a heavy and hooky synth bassline and warm electric piano stabs. The long-serving DJ/producer's original mix is superb, but the accompanying remixes from Louie Vega are high-quality too. He first offers up a chunky, organ-sporting 'House 90Mood Mix' that's pleasingly percussive, before delivering a Mood II Swing-esque 'Raw Dub' and a 'Downtown Disco Dub Mix' full of walking bass and immersive, colourful chords.

Starry Night (6:40)
Han Pan (6:43)
Review: Given her runaway success in recent years, it was almost inevitable that Peggy Gou would launch her own record label sooner or later. Wisely, she's chosen to kickstart said imprint - the freshly minted Gudu Records - with her first EP of fresh material for over 12 months. A-side "Starry Night" is an unashamedly positive and life-affirming affair, with Gou placing bouncy piano riffs, sultry South Korean and English vocals and Boyd Jarvis/Paul Simpson style synth-bass atop a snappy, late '80s style house rhythm. There's a similarly retro-futurist feel to the equally loved-up "Han Pan", where Gou's attractive vocals once again catch the ear alongside heavy analogue bass, chiming synth lines and Kwaito influenced drums.

Review: After a debut release that got plenty of people talking, Heels & Souls now serve up a reissue 12". It explores the work of Frankfurt's under the radar production trio Manfred Holz, Michael Buchner and Jurgen Blomke who work under two different names here. The EP is a real treasure trove of gold for deep diggers, with obscure synth and electro disco flavours on the 80s tinged ''Steal It An Deal It'.' It comes as two different versions and both are hugely characterful. 'Amazonia' that draws on dreamy Italo house and Balearic bliss bout beats for a new age trip that is first class.

I Still Love You (10:23)
I Said I Wasn't Gonna Fall In Love No More (6:26)
If You Give Me Another Chance (6:29)
Review: Naarm / Melbourne's Prequel has slipped out a few records thus far, and they've landed in all the right places. Rhythm Section, Local Talk, Distant Hawaii - you can get a feel for the kind of house music he's representing. And yet, as he shores up on Lumberjacks In Hell, what's most apparent is how far out he's prepared to go in pursuit of that deep feeling. 'I Still Love You' is a sprawling, delirious and spaced out exploration that belongs amongst the truly idiosyncratic outliers of house music - your Pepe Bradocks and Theo Parrishes. 'I Said I Wasn't Gonna Fall In Love No More' has a tighter groove, but it's still executed with a dislocated, psychedelic finish which stands well apart from the crowd. 'If You Give Me Another Chance' finds Prequel coming at a grab bag of samples from a crooked angle, but with enough jack to keep the wheels from coming off. Inspired stuff.

Review: After a top-flight 12" back in 2018, the mysterious Jamn Ensemble. entity returns with the plush, deep and melodic techno strains of 'The Snows Of Yesteryear', which get a damn fine shuffle up from Basic Soul Unit. 'Nord' piles on heady deep house of the highest order, and 'Envol' swerves into a knotty rhythm and celestial pad drops to keep your mind locked in and travelling far. If you're after some fresh yet classically rooted contemporary techno, this comes highly recommended.

Review: Five years on from their lauded debut album, Dan Piu and Robert P. return with a second trip into luxurious deep house, this time moving from deepArtSounds to Deep Explorer. It's a logical step given their closeness to Dubbyman and his particular world of serious, soulful deep house, and their new album sounds right at home on the label. Dubbyman himself has a hand in a number of tracks on the album, not least the stunning, fired up club cut 'La Experiencia Tribal'. Meanwhile Owen Jay and Chris Gray guest on the melancholic downtempo jam 'Where Do I Go From Now', while Grant and Bjak lend some heady vocals to 'Honesty'. This is a proper deep house album, teasing different tempos and exploring beyond the confines of the club.

Review: Joseph Caserta specialises in reworking little known soul and disco gems into brand new weapons. He does so on his own label as well Bridge Boots, with a couple lined up for the next few weeks. The first is this one, which features two version of '(M)', starting with the Baby Maker dub. It's a slinky bit of squelchy dub disco funk with lively perc and pixelated pads. Review: The Scenic Route is one of the many enduringly essential EPs from New York groove masters Mood II Swing. It was also one of John Ciafone and Lem Springsteen's earliest back in 1994 but it still resonates with its dark talk on deep house and exceptionally well designed drums. 'Nafara' puts all the focus on them. Little happens but you're still hooked. 'Chicago Blues' is a more joyful tune with a little air in the mix and hope in the chords. 'Sunlight In My Eyes' is one of the pair's most well rinsed tunes but it remains effective, and there's still time for two more tight house kickers before this one is done.

Backchat For Toprock (5:18)
Review: Dego and Kaidi on Sound Signature whut???? Here's a partnership that makes perfect sense! The West London legends bring their signature blend of soul and brukked up grit to Theo Parrish's label across three stellar cuts resulting in a 12" that will remain long in the box. Lead track "Adam Rock Dissed" sets the tone, gliding out of the grooves with impeccably placed drums snapping away loosely as Kaidi lets loose with his magical fingers on keys. Next up, "Moths In Wallets" rolls forward and fat on a lazy breakbeat with the vibe enhanced by the low bass rumble and rich, rich keys. This might be our favourite cut on the 12" though B-side production "Backchat for Toprock" runs it close. Live drums get ripped up hard, rocking to their own broken step as Dego and Kaidi slowly tease out some heart wrenching chords amidst a flurry of heavy piano. The masters are in session, pay attention!

It's been rather quiet for a while but makes a triumphant return here with Chicago vocalist and producer Paris Brightledge serving up some fresh new joints that get some serious guests involved. The first of those is Marshall Jefferson who remixes 'Deep In My Soul' into a steamy house cut with acid flashes next to the gorgeous vocal. The Brightledge Ascension mix is more smooth and breezy and then Eric Kupper's version of 'For Love' is a sweet and soulful excursion. The closer is a big and bouncy percussive number to pump any party.
