Change 4 Me
Exit #1
4 Red
Review: ** REPRESS ** Wild Oats come through with the double plated goodness, as the oft-hinted label debut of Jay Daniel arrives in the shape of the Karmatic Equations EP. A resident at Detroit party Fundamentals alongside Kyle Hall, Jay Daniel has been a hot tip ever since he made his 12" debut last year in illustrious fashion with the rugged Scorpio Rising EP for Theo's Sound Signature label. Since then, Daniel has become an increasingly regular presence on the European club circuit - recently making his debut at Panorama Bar - lauded by FACT and dropped a guest mix on Benji B. So you could say there was a sense of expectation surrounding young Jay's next release. The five track Karmatic Equations is likely to be as popular as that SS release, further refining Daniel's rugged approach with C Side cut "Change 4 Me" and the bumping final track "4 Red" likely to be the cuts most selectors pull for again and again. Housed in a full colour reverse board record sleeve and full colour centre labels, Daniel's EP for Wild Oats precedes the promised launch of his own Watusi High label later this year.

Waldorf Salad
Third Planet From Altair
Review: As Juju & Jordash, Gal Aner and Jordan Czamanski have been integral in the rise of the Dekmantel label, issuing several killer 12"s and two albums, with Techno Primitivism one of the best long players of 2012. Since that album, there's been a ton of remixes, some superb Golf Channel releases as well as the pair's esteemed improvised work with Move D as Magic Mountain High. Oh and Jordan started his new label Off Minor Recordings too. Ever the busy pair then, and a return to Dekmantel is most welcome with the double A-side record Waldorf Salad/Third Planet From Altair demonstrates Gal and Jordan have lost none of their knack for amusing track titles. Both cuts here are filled with the sort of loose programming and rich detail that we have come to expect from Juju & Jordash - with "Third Planet From Altair" our personal favourite - and bodes well for a third LP that is apparently in the works.

Review: It seems surprising that this debut album from Kassem Mosse should appear with little fanfare, but that's apparently how the acclaimed German producer wanted it. Predictably, it's rather good. Rippling with fuzzy analogue warmth, crusty drum machine rhythms, toasty keys and alien electronics, it offers a selection of undulating deep house cuts in his inimitable style. At times - such as on the soulful shuffle of "Untitled A1" and jazzy "Untitled D1" - it sounds a little like vintage Moodymann; at others, Mosse's techno influence is much more apparent (see the wonky throb of "Untitled D1"). Throughout, Workshop 19 is formidably atmospheric.

Forever Monna (with Stacey Pullen - Oracy extended Factory Mornings edit)
Don't Try It (with Ron Trent)
A Dedication To Joss (with Ralph Lawson)
The Feeling (with MK)
Review: The title says it all with this gathering of Chez Damier gems for the Mojuba label which features the man himself looking rather content with life on the cover. First up is "A Dedication To Joss", one of the finest moments Ralph Lawson has ever been involved in with its instantly recognisable vocal snaps and crafty construction. Then two mixes of "Forever" with Stacey Pullen draw on the evergreen "Forever Monna" riff and work it amongst some chunkier basslines and drums to bring different slants to a legendary house riff. Last but by no means least is the classic Chez and Ron Trent collaboration "Don't Try It". Don't sleep!

Woo Ha
Brothers & Sisters
Review: Mister Saturday Night take it to the disco with this riotous two track 12" from Glasgow based pairing General Ludd. Whilst the name may be new to you, the duo behind General Ludd should be familiar with Tom Marshallsay widely regarded for his work as Dam Mantle and Rich McMaster part of the excellent Optimo Music act Golden Teacher. Apparently General Ludd began with the pair working on interactive sound installations, before moving into fully fledged productions and their debut release is a real slammer. Lead track "Woo Ha" is the sort of cut DJs every where will embrace as a tool for causing optimum dancefloor mayhem, a crushing array of orgiastic vocal samples, deep bass lines, rickety snares and drums subjected to expert delay. "Brothers & Sisters" offers a more reserved B Side and is perfect for those on warm up duties. More of this General Ludd!

Review: Parisian label My Love Is Underground team up with fellow French operation Favourite Records to step into the compilation game with this crucial triple vinyl release put together by Jeremy Underground Paris. Since the label's emergence back in 2010, My Love Is Underground have been at the forefront of championing 90s house music with the supreme knowledge and digging skills of Jeremy Underground Paris leading to a raft of killer reissues as well as music from contemporary producers who tap into this classicist sound. As the title suggests, My Love Is Underground: 12 House Tracks Selected By Jeremy Underground Paris contains a bounty of rare, forgotten and unknown house gems, with Aaron Arce's Jhelisa sampling "Pressure" setting the tone for what to expect. Look out for the wonderfully crunchy "Euro-Disney (part 1 & 2)" from DJ Nature's old Natureboy alias.

Review: Riding high on the buzz he has generated in the last twelve months, Max Graef delivers this album to Tartelet as a man very much in demand. His style, fuelled on the foundations of sampling funk and soul to a brilliantly modern end, has more space to breathe on this LP, but still the fundamentals remain. "Itzehoe" struts on a lazy jazzed-out sizzle of drums and beautiful Rhodes notes while "Tamboule Fudgefunk" punches its way through woozy synth work and a righteous beat and "Drums Of Death" struts on a perfect disco groove replete with live instrumentation, but there's a wealth of other tempos and styles all shot through with the homespun jazz charm that Graef has made his own of late.

Justified
Freaks Of The Industry
Review: The mysterious Adesse has been kicking about for about a year or so now, appearing on labels like Trus'me's Prime Numbers and the first (white label) release for the Make Love In Public Places label - while also turning in some Adesse versions of Theo Parrish, Jack Master and Nick Holder. Cast your mind back to the first three multicoloured 12"s Cottam released in 2009 and you'll have an idea of what to expect from the first Adesse Versions EP on its label of the same name. There's a tip of the hat to Madonna on "Justified", while "In The Dark" throws a soulful acapella over the top of bouncy deep house chords and straight disco drums, meanwhile the dub of this keeps the chorus' baking track, while reducing the musicality in other parts. "Freaks Of The Industry" has a real Mark E feel to it - and by the sounds of it Adesse has creatively turned a vocal snippet from the 20th Century Steel Band's "Heaven and Hell is on Earth" (famously used by Grand Master Flash) into the track's main hook.

Lost In My Brain Fog (extended outro mix)
A Variation On A Theme
Lost In My Brain Fog (Medicated mix)
Review: Cottam is proud to present the first release on his new label, Ruff Draft. Paul Cottam came to wider attention with a series of limited edition blank-label 12s released from 2009 onwards, showcasing his production talents by re-working afro-beat, neo-soul, funk & hip-hop into deep house burners, but Ruff Draft is all about original tracks, and the first release sees three tracks from the man himself. 'Lost In My Brain Fog' comes in two versions, the super deep original is an ethereal trip of shimmering strings and delayed percussion, but with a kicking distorted thump at the bottom end to still work the floor - a real trip. The Medicated Mix has a mystery vocalist mixing with dub techno chords and jacking percussion for a late night trip to the back room of a dark warehouse. The EP is completed with 'A Variation on a Theme', a gem of a deep house groover with beautiful chords and acid that creeps up and sidles its way behind and around you before pinching your wallet and necking your drink. The first release on Ruff Draft sets a high standard, pressed on 180 gram vinyl and cut loud. Keep a look out for further transmissions in the near future, from Cottam and other artists as they keep it deep and keep it Ruff.

Openin' Up
M Flight
Review: Pressing issues may have delayed the Pender Street Steppers' debut on Mood Hut Recordings, but this fresh single on PPU should more than plug the gap. Those who may have heard the Mood Hut outfit's Life In The Zone cassette last year will know what to expect: "Openin' Up" combines jittery conga percussion with rubbery bass and a positively uplifting sense of melody that nevertheless errs on the grubbier side of the spectrum, while "M Flight" is even more summery in it outlook, as a humorous '80s-inspired piece of melodic sampling propels its blissful chords and carefree bassline. As with all Mood Hut-affiliated releases, this won't last long...

John Heckle - "Emerald 66"
Malcolm Moore - "Way Of The City"
Review: AMR's 27th release features a barnstormer of a track by the legendary John Heckle (of Mathematics Recordings, Tabernacle Records, and M>O>S Recordings) that is sure to light up clubs everywhere. Its big, fat, analog bassline combined with take-charge leads and rising melodies is a floor-filler. "Emerald 66" is six minutes of dancing bliss with its in-your-face snares, claps, and tambourines. Malcolm Moore works the flip side with "Way Of The City", an affair that starts out muted but quickly expands into a drum-filled frenzy. A break in the action gives dancers a moment to catch their breath before the acid onslaught continues in earnest in the second half.

DJ Qu - "Undescribed (Believer)"
Review: Four years on from the previous instalment, DJ QU's Strength Music returns with a third edition of their Semesters series, with contributions from Pixel Music, Nicuri and QU himself this time around. Leading the way is "M- Theory" from Pixel Music, a lesser spotted alias of Italian producer Massimiliano 'Hazylujah' Vianello which selfishly grips the entire A Side and quite rightly so as it's a potent production filled with mind bending potential. Having recently flirted with Joey Anderson's Inimeg operation, Nicuri returns to the Strength cause on the B Side offering the pensive deepness of "Thoughts Of You" whilst DJ QU signs off the 12" with the bugged out beat down of "Undescribed (Believer)" which is what Parliament would be making if they were to surface in today's sonic climate.

Review: In terms of making an impressive head turning debut, few can top Dan Shake. With his bow on Mahogani, the London-based producer becomes the first artist to release on Kenny Dixon Jnr's iconic label with no prior affiliation to Detroit. The story goes that whilst in attendance at last year's Dimensions festival, Shake handed KDJ a CDr filled with his productions and soon after found himself signed up for release on the man's label! As you'd expect Dan Shake fits right in on the label with this pair of simmering motor city heaters with the lead track "3 AM Jazz Club" coming across like a sharper Dani Plessow production.

Jimini - "Wishes"
Review: A welcome return to Blind Jack's Journey for Lille's foremost exponent of deep house lusciousness Jimini, with the Frenchman having helped inaugurated the label's Dream House series back in 2012. Though he's only previously issued one full single, the digital only 2013 Dance Flight Therapy EP on Lo-Deep Recordings, Jimini is clearly suited to the format; here he treats ears to a quartet of productions that commences on a palpably sensuous note with "On The Road", a track whose emotive impact is magnified by the fragile vocal contribution of Molly Knew. The lightly break beat flavoured "Hopeness" draws from a similar sound palette, with some incandescent synths taking the show stealing place of any vocals, whilst the B Side houses two cuts that the DJs will find very useful indeed, in particular the deep grooves of "Wishes". Another fine drop from Blind Jack's Journey.

Review: With just one other record consigned to the project it's not often we witness label boss Jimpster turning his hand to his discofied alias on Delusions Of Grandeur. Any keen followers of the label will be more than satisfied with the vibe on offer, as a slower kind of house groove takes hold for three tracks infused with spiritual sampling, starting with the wistful, soulful tones of "Painted Lady". "Lumpsucker" has a stronger electronic vein running through its core, matching Chicago drums and snaking arpeggios with washes of chords to keep the mood mellow, before "Camberwell Beauty" scrubs out the edges and drifts deep down into a sumptuous pillow of laconic house.

Review: Having launched with a timely reissue of Trinidadian Deep's "Tree Of Life", Albuquerque's fledgling Plastik People label adopts a different tact for their second release with the first in a series of Various People split artist releases. The archival approach hasn't been abandoned completely however as leading proceedings is a Plastik edit of Louie Balo's hard to find mid '90s garage bumper "Don't Shut Me Out". Complementing this, Music Is Love graduate Mikki Funk continues to excel on "Lose My Mind" whose soul is derived from a similarly warm '90s climate as Louie Balo. Face down and Tuff Jam & Mike Sharon team up for the boompty delights of "Thankyou House Music" whilst underground legend Karl The Voice makes an appearance on final cut "Jus Dance" with his vocals the perfect accompaniment to Marc Cotterell's punchy arrangement.

Review: If you're looking for classic deep house reissues, the Apollonia crew are doing an ever increasingly great job of turning out the truly sought after gems amongst the chaff. Kerri Chandler's Night Moves EP that originally put out "Sunday Sunlight" is now fetching silly prices elsewhere, but it's not hard to see why when you wrap your ears around the swinging deep house master at his very best. From the warm, bubbly bassline to the life-affirming chords to the sweet, distant vocal hook, it's everything you want from the man. To round the package off in fine style, Delano Smith slides in for a remix that dubs the track out with a soft but effective touch.

It's an all-star cast here from artists in their youth, from MK's club mix of the star title in all its unmistakable MIDI Sax-ing glory, through to Carl Craig in a breezy piano breakbeat mood that's utterly charming in its simplicity. Stevie B - "When I See You"
Review: 124 Recordings return in 2014 with 'The Link-Up' EP-four tracks split between London producer Stevie B and NYC's Doug Gomez, both delivering their own interpretation of house music recalling the heady days of the 90s without relying on the same tired and over used formulas.First up is Stevie B,fresh from his collaboration with Victor Simonelli, and with releases on Matt Jam Lamont's Solo Music and long-time UK House stalwart Jeremy Sylvester's Urban Dubz.Opening track 'Get So Blue' reaffirms the less is more belief, with skipping drums and hats holding up soulful keys and vox, underpinned with a warm bassline and pads.Next up is Brooklyn resident Doug Gomez.Formerly of the Drrtyhaze duo with releases on Tirk and Gomma,he has also released on King Street Sounds and Ultra Nate's 411 Paradox Underground.Taking things back to his roots 'Phoenix Rising' is a blissful track full of delicate and colourful melodies, while the solid kick drums toughen things up.He open's up the second side with 'Ohh Baby',a straight-up underground house jam-with crisp drums and high treble clicks leading into a heavy bassline and a female vocal hook that really stay's in the listener's head.Last but by no means least Stevie B closes things with his New Jersey influenced track 'When I See You',where warm rhodes and strings make for a perfect late-night vibe.

Fans of Mic Newman's music on Tsuba will warm to this with tracks like "Down With You Baby" sharing that same laid-back vibe heard in some of the Australian's earlier productions, while its soft vocals are similar to fellow Melbourne producer The Tortoise. Review: ** REPRESS ** Martyn's 3024 label returns with an extensive collection of works from rising UK house man Leon Vynehall. Originally debuting on Well Rounded Records' Housing Project sub-label back in 2012 with the Mauve 12", Vynehall has since become one of the UK's most in-demand of the new wave of young house producers, releasing subsequent records for George Fitzgerald's ManMakeMusic and Will Saul's Aus as well as collaborating with blog house survivor A1 Bassline under the Laszlo Dancehall alias. Having debuted on 3024 with last year's Open platter, Vynehall is back with Music For The Uninvited, a seven-track collection of tracks supposedly inspired by rides to school in his mother's car as a child in which he would listen to "mixed hip-hop, funk & electro tapes, Janet Jackson albums, Style Council and Stiff Little Fingers". Whilst there is plenty of the individual house sound Vynehall has developed on offer here ("It's Just (House Of Dupree)" is a certified jam) there are also more tranquil moments to bask in such as "Inside The Deku Tree" and "St Sinclair" which bookend this excellent release.
