Jim Sharp - "Westchester Eagle" (rework) (3:46)
Double A - "Faith To The Folk" (rework) (3:42)
Review: Remixer extraordinaire Jim Sharp debuts on the Mountain 45s label with another of his razor sharp offerings. HIs take on 'Westchester Eagle' take plenty of subtle cues form the original such as the tumbling drum breaks and neat little chord riffs, but layers in some airy vocals and funky kicks. It's a big hearted, feel good tune that oozes class and joins the dots between the ages. On the flipside is Double A's 'Faith To The Folk,' a deep cut and hard hitting hip hop joint with killer bars and chunky funk in the drums and bass.

Inner City Blues (4:30)
Voices Of Other Times (5:54)
Review: Dynamite Cuts have got another red hot bit of funk on their hands here with Brian Auger's Oblivion Express the subject of this reissue of two of his most blissed out sounds. The first is a magic cover of Marvin Gaye's timeless 'Inner City Blues' from his most iconic album, What's Going On. In this outfit's hands the groove becomes a little more deep and languid, with funky guitars and steamy vocals sinking you into a real romantic vibe. The second is an original tune, 'Voices Of Other Times,' that explores more uplifting soul vibes.

Galvanize (3:00)
Chewtacca (2:25)
Review: Strictly hush-hush bootleg remix action here, as Russian turntablist-turned-producer Paul Sitter delivers two more hand crafted gems based around vocals and samples from a wide variety of sonic sources. We're particularly enjoying A-side 'Galvanize', which adds Q-Tip's vocals from the Chemical Brothers tune of the same name to MPC tapped-out hip-hop beats and the horns, bass, guitars and organs from what sounds like an old psych-funk instrumental. He ups the tempo on 'Chewtacca', opting for a cheery, sample-heavy blend of boom-bap hip-hop and 1960s mod madness featuring snippets of the Ohio Express's 'Chewy Chewy' and a 2010 jam from rap duo Das Racist. It's very silly, but also very entertaining - the kind of thing guaranteed to put smiles on faces in the middle of a bleak midwinter.

Brilhante, E (4:08)
Pra Voce (5:25)
Confusao (4:31)
Joia Da Bahia (4:10)
Review: The well-loved compilation series Too Slow To Disco is back with another excellent double 7" package on its How Do You Are? label. Long time label associate Vibes4YourSoul is on the buttons and brings some lush and sunny Brazilian grooves. 'Brilhante' kicks off with a hip swinging, gentle funk groove, 'Pra Voce' has gorgeous spoken word Portuguese vocals over the top of tin pot percussion and swaying drums and 'Confusao' ups the samba element with acoustic strings and brit whistles. 'Joia Da Bahia' closes down with a fat bottomed and funky deep house styled sound with lush instrumentation from Latin America.

C'est Quoi C'est Quoi (4:47)
C'est Quoi C'est Quoi (Gimme riddim dub) (5:01)
Review: Bosq's Bacalao label is back with more of that supreme feel-good gear to bring about sunnier days. The artist frequently spotted on Ubiquity knows exactly how to craft a sumptuous groove with a particular focus on Latin music and Afrobeat, and he's doing that with flair and precision on 'C'est Quoi C'est Quoi'. The track features French poet Pat Kalla on vocals, and it's leaps off the 7" primed for festival deployment. If you want to get the crowd locked in and heads down, the 'Gimme Riddim Dub' on the flip may be more your bag, but either way the musicality springs forth from this perfect nugget of globally-minded funk.

Kairo Bancou Moulu (4:43)
The Kevin Fingier Collective - "Addis Ababa" (3:14)
Review: Fingier is Acid Jazz's new sub label for the multifarious works of Argentinian producer Kevin Fingier. Fingier touches on soul, R&B, boogaloo and raw funk in his music, and that's true once again on this collaboration with Abdoulaye Badiane. Badiane is originally from Senegal but now based in Argentina, and he's been travelling the world for 20 years teaching African music. Now he brings his musical heritage to bear on Fingier's funk, and the fusion is incredibly sweet and soulful. 'Kairo Bancou Moulu' has a 60s touch, while 'Addis Ababa' naturally takes its cues from the incredible legacy of Ethiopian jazz.

Green Onions (3:58)
On The Good Foot (4:24)
Review: Booker T & MG's seminal classic 'Green Onions' is one of the most ubiquitous funk tunes out there. It has many essential defining features and cannot fail to get you nodding. On this limited edition 7" from Floyd James & The GTs it gets an organ led instrumental flip that ups the drum funk and allows this walking chris to really shine. On the reverse is James Brown's equally crucial 'Get On The Good Foot.' This one swings a bit more, with funky guitar riffs and more subtle chords bring gar good ties while the trumpets do their thing up top.

Review: Don Leisure's last album in 2017 was a real cult classic for hip hop and beat lovers. First World Records have finally got the follow up ready, and the much anticipated Shaboo Strikes Back does not leave anyone disappointed. It stretches out over 25 tracks and each one is a balmy and heady mix of fuzzy synths, wooden drum hits and smart samples that take in everything from serene strings to old soul vocals. It's a widescreen listen with loose tambourines dangled over gypsy funk synths on 'Shaboo Strikes Back' while 'Sugar Cane Juice' is a more edgy hip-hop cut. Super stuff.

Whitelines (4:31)
Smack My Pitch Up (4:04)
Review: Australia's Choi Records drop their second release in the shape of two powerful cover versions either side of a devilish little 7" by The Traffic. The A-side, "White Lines", is a funky, horn-led reinterpretation of Grandmaster Flash's original tune : an instrumental brass ode to the original beast. On the flip, there's "Smack My Pitch Up", another mighty instrumental rework of The Prodigy classic, complete with a string of trumpets that imitate the original's inimitable vocal loop.

Review: Who knew an entertainment career spanning the likes of comic sci-fi series like Red Dwarf and kitsch game shows vis-a-vis Robot Wars could result in a side stint curating soul compilations? Well, it's exactly what happened to Craig Charles, who also happens to have been manning BBC6 Music's soul and funk corner for almost 20 years now, not to mention regularly touring the world as a DJ. This isn't his first 'Trunk of Funk'. The first was overwhelmingly well-received by a "funk hungry public", and now, our national treasure Craigy-boy has ensured said public doesn't starve a second time round. Backboned by Charles' introductory yells to imaginary screaming crowds - "are you ready!?" - we cycle through funk bits both old and new, exclusive and widely-available, from Cha Wa to Luther Ingram to Joel Culpepper. Craig says: "Give your ears and feet enough mellifluous musical fodder to last you until Volume 3 - Awooga!"

Listen Love (6:31)
So Little Time (2:56)
Review: Dynamite Cuts continue doing good justice to the label's obsession with Jon Lucien, the soul and funk crooner who eluded overt popularity but refused to let that crimp his style. Four of his most timeless classics here get the reissue treatment, and are compiled into one EP, traversing the lengthy ranges of b-boy breaks ('A Sunny Day'), percussive soca ('Ghetto Song'), post-highlife prayers ('Listen Love'), and everything in between.

Review: Thai funk greatness wafts over to the Netherlands from South-East Asia, as we revel in this new, second album from Yin Yin - 'The Age Of Aquarius'. An 8-tracker of gilded and groovy proportions, it's paramount to keep in mind the deft fusion of electronics and acoustics on this album. Also informing on the project are the band's experiences on the road, where the band felt an unexplainable, psychic interplay between their fans' reactions to their performances, and their ability to create even more music.

Vina (5:39)
Mkondo Wa Moto (4:43)
Review: London's Original Gravity label is a trusted source for soul, funk and reggae 45s, and they're back with this seriously hot one from Mafumu. The project is a collaboration between Neil Anderson and Max Jere of The Umoza Music Project, based in Senga Bay on Lake Malawi. On the A side track you can hear Jere singing in Malawi's main language of Chichewa, urging listeners to "vina!" which means 'dance'. It's unmistakably Afro funk, with blasts of horns and a rolling, hypnotic groove that suck you in immediately. On the flip Anderson takes over for the instrumental 'Mkondo Wa Moto', which leans in on the talking drum and lays some funk and and Latin touches into the mix.
