Feel So Good Inside (extended Waxist edit mix) (6:51)
Feel So Good Inside (4:19)
Take Me To (New York City) (4:18)
Review: The result of a diligent digging quest since he heard DJ Klas drop it many years ago, Lyonaisse editor Waxist has finally track down his own copy of Lamar's 1980 disco soul love gem and given it some serious treatment. Extending the unfettered positivity of the original by almost two minutes (with special attention paid to that immense organ solo), it lives up to its name in every possible way. For authenticity's sake he's also included the original B-side "Take Me To New York". Still standing the test of time impeccably after 35 years, one tickle from the lolloping bassline and swooning keys and your dancefloor will be hooked.

Alan Mooney's Edits - "Kofi"
LTJ - "Don't You Do It"
Get Down Edits - "Dirty"
Queen & Disco - "Ghetto Life"
Review: Derry natives The Queen & Disco launch their eponymous label with Royalty Of Funk, a 12" boasting contributions from Luca 'LTJ' Trevisi and fellow Irish scalpel addicts Get Down Edits. Q&D alumnus Alan Mooney's Edits shares space with LTJ on the A side, with the breezy beatdown of the former's "KOFI" complemented by the handclap laden disco funk of the Italian's masterful "Don't You Do It". Face down and Get Down Edits veer off into spottieottiedopalicious territory with the horned sleaze of the appropriately named "Dirty" whilst Queen & Disco round out an impressive first 12" release with their own debut production "Ghetto Life".

Wizard Funk (5:39)
Cream (4:49)
The Moment (6:08)
Alright (3:29)
Review: Long-standing French funk veteran Vas delivers another deep disco dispatch... "Wizard Funk" lives up to its name with a ballsy, almost dubby stomp and a bassline so juicy it could grow flowers in the desert. "Cream" dims the lights, dips the tempo and slowly strips off every musical garment to reveal a slinky, naked bassline. "The Moment" is subverted repurpose of Inner Life's Salsoul standard "Moment Of My Life" where the groove and backing vocals hog the spotlight. Ending on a sweet, skanky high, Vas brings this show to an end with a beautiful rework of Keith Hudson & Family Man's "I'm Alright". Sporting a new coat of drums and a tripped out synth lines, it's an instant soul soother... And a great way to end an awesomely broad EP.

Review: US crate-diggers Cultures of Soul are swiftly becoming masters of left-of-centre disco compilations, with their Caribbean and Indian disco retrospectives (Tropical Disco Hustle and Bombay Disco) being amongst the stand-out collections of 2014. Here they change tack again, offering a double-vinyl showcase of Brazilian disco, boogie and jazz-funk. While there are a few "must-haves" here (Marcos Valle's celebrated "Estrelar", for starters), the real joy of The Brazilian Boogie Connection comes from the less well-known material. Check out, for example, the horn-toting disco-funk breeziness of Banda Black Rio's "Expresso Madureira", Emilio Santiago's "O Amigo De Nova York" or Tarantulas' brilliant re-imagining of Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough".

Track 4
Review: LPH don Jacques Renault did such a good job on volume 25, the edit focused Mule Musiq off-shoot has invited him back for an instant rematch. Naturally he's come out fighting, packing four deeply dug cuts from the late 80s that still hold serious clout now. From the warehouse-demolishing rhythm and euphoric arpeggios of "Track 1" to the thundering beats, stuttering vocal sample and epic synth hook of "Track 3" via the spine-melting pianos of "Track 2", once again Renault has surpassed himself. Get lost and make it snappy... These limited pressings won't hang around.

NYM (VinylAddicted & Jean Claude Gavri edit)
Caught Up In The Rapture (PIXELATED Anita On Acid re-edit)
Day To Day (Alkalino edit)
Hidden Rung (The Silver Rider edit)
Review: Disco Meze is the latest platter served up by Sleazy McQueen's evergreen Whiskey Disco operation, and it's a various artists affair with contributions from Vinyladdicted, Jean Claude Gavri, Pixelated, Alkalino, and The Silver Rider. It's Vinyladdicted and Seaside Edits don Gavri who are first up with a lovingly filtered exercise in peak time disco with "NYM" - just wait for that synth solo to burst out!! Up next, Pixelated goes deep into the disco with the fine "Caught Up In The Rapture" which is pretty much an endless tease, whilst "Day To Day" from Alkalino could easily be laid over a bumping DJ tool. The Silver Rider's effort, "Hidden Rung", will appeal to fans of the Whitney tweak Genius of Time did a few years back.

Good Almond
Review: Hauke Freer is usually best known for his work alongside Matthias Reiling on the excellent Session Victim project, but he now appears under his own name for the newly crowned XK imprint. To get things started, "XK" drops a heavy artillery of funky samples on to a badass slap-bass, while "Highdisco" verges onto Sound Stream territories thanks to its broken, juicy groove, and "Good Almond"is basically a high-tempo disco number for the modern age. Three soulful dancefloor delights for all shapes and sizes. More, please!

Sweet Love (Borrowed Identity edit) (6:55)
Musique (Borrowed Identity edit) (9:24)
You Can't Change A Man (Borrowed Identity edit) (5:55)
Review: Since launching in early 2014, the Hong Kong-based Homesick series - an offshoot of Cliche Records - has provided disco DJs with some of the strongest edits of recent times; reverential but floor-friendly reworks that get the right balance between re-mastered original parts and house-friendly additional beats. This third volume comes from Borrowed Identity, a house producer whose edits and productions have appeared on an impressive list of labels. These four reworks are predictably tidy, soulful and groovy, with familiar disco and soul staples being given loose but heavy rearrangements. Picking highlights is tough given the high quality threshold, but we're particularly taken with the vibraphone-laden party shuffle of "Run Run Run" and low-slung Afro-disco strut of "You Can't Change A Man".

Leisure Suit Preben (I Cube remix)
Preben Goes To Acapulco (Prins Thomas remix)
Review: In some ways, the "Preben" suite of tracks from Terje's It's Album Time LP is a strange choice for remixing. That said, the two original tracks both featured plenty of live instrumentation and spiraling synth solos amongst their nu disco-meets-easy listening and library jazz-funk grooves, making them attractive to remixers. As a result, these two reworks are unsurprisingly different to the source material. Parisian veteran I:Cube does a superb job on "Leisure Suit Preben", turning the tongue-in-cheek original into a string-drenched chunk of immersive Balearic house. Terje's old pal Prins Thomas sticks closer to the original vibe of "Preben Goes To Acapulco", turning in a breezy chunk of Arp-laden jazz-funk blessed with his usual organic, bass-heavy grooves.

Free Association - "Free Sensation"
Hristo - "Heat Market"
Review: Edmonton crew Common Edit resurface with their first 7" treat in almost a year with Andrew Allsgood's Free Association and Honey Disco's Hristo sharing sides. As with all Common Edit releases it's a record of two halves with the Hristo production floor worthy whilst the Free Association track one for more horizontal situations. It's hard to describe "Free Sensation" as anything other than dreamy, with Allsgood revealing a dubby adventure into sumptuous dancefloor disco funk with some absolutely killer filtering. A decidedly more taut sensation runs through "Heat Market" from Hristo which is some uncredited, rigid disco funk perfect for the more cosmically minded selectors.

North (original)
North (Eddie C mix)
Review: Serial collaborator Rune Lindbaek has been working with studio partner Oyvind Blikstad since 2012, but this is the first time the duo has released a single together. "North" is arguably typically of Lindbaek's output over the last few years, sitting somewhere between rubbery, punk-funk influenced dub disco and gentle Balearica (think twinkling pianos, heavenly chords and shuffling acoustic guitars). Man of the moment Eddie C provides the flipside remix, emphasizing the beautiful and deep elements of the original while giving the track a little more bespoke disco swing. In some ways, it's typical of the Canadian's style, but more beguiling - and less percussive - than many of his outings.

The Greatest Part Of Loving
Fun
Review: Straight out of the early '80s, "The Greatest Part Of Loving" was penned and produced by Adell Shavers and Was Not Was's David McMurray. A silky piece of contemporary Detroit boogie, "The Greatest Part Of Loving" was criminally serviced and never felt the spotlight it deserved; until now that is thanks to The Athens Of The North crew. Backed up with the fittingly titled stomping disco funk cut "Fun", this limited 7" covers both sides of the dance with the attention to detail and care we've come to expect from AOTN.

Disco Power
Funk Ina Ghetto
Review: Concentrated Nigerian disco from 1980: I.G's only album Bomp fetches triple figures without so much as a second thought. Listen to these two limited, loud-pressed album highlights and you'll understand why. Galvanised by I.G's distinctive falsetto, "Disco Power" pays homage to the sound of New York while retaining a tight sense of Afro rhythm and highlife sparkled guitars. "Funk Ina Ghetto" is equally alluring. With I.G taking a more spoken word approach, it comes on strong like a Donny Hathaway joint - all dramatic and dynamic. Powerful.

Review: Boom! Here's the sixth chapter of the Secret Squirrels edits and it was about bloody time too! Needless to say, we don't know who's behind these disco-fuelled cluster bombs but even if we did, we wouldn't be allowed to tell ya! In any case, "Track 1" of this naughty little 12" is an effective, loopy, electro-jacked party-starter packing one hell of a bassline, while "Track 2" takes things down a notch and enters funk mode thanks to its swaying, slow beats and takes a "lil ride laaas' night"! Fake Glasses - "Dancehall" (6:03)
Noodleman - "Acid Ting" (9:14)
Review: Eddie C invites Fake Glasses and The Noodleman to straddle his crimson two-wheeler for two deep dub disco delights: The former gets his treacle-like squelch on as he flexes around a short vocal hook and sweet skank, using chubby acid as a means of melodic bass dynamic. The latter goes deeper again with warm kick, a sheet metal snare and a low-end flow that's so thick it's almost toxic. Limited and hand-stamped, this is nothing short of stunning.

Track 1 (6:48)
Track 2 (6:01)
Track 3 (5:33)
Review: Japanese edit series Jolly Jams calls up Felix Dickinson for an exercise in subverted versionism. Tightly trimming - and in some cases completely repurposing - Coach House Rhythm Section's "Nobody's Got Time". Track one is the most authentic cover as the vocal stays intact but the electro disco is switched for a bluesy, sweaty party version. Track two sees Felix get busy in the dub department as the bass-based groove rattles with flabby, immersive funk. Finally the entire original is twisted to fit a slap-bass bashing Balearic dynamic, complete with new female vocals. Three really interesting versions that each stand alone as original tracks.

Skipping thick drums and a bouncing bass overlaid with nu med guitars and beautiful synth lines. This track is made for pool parties and lofts. The second track is Afro Vibes a more atmospheric percussive groove. Review: New Zealand-based DJ/producer Frank Booker is no newcomer to the world of the floor-friendly re-edit. Having previously released killer scalpel works on Razor 'N' Tape, KAT and Disco Deviance, he's decided to launch his own edit series, Down In The Basement. As usual, there's much to enjoy, with Booker extending and working killer grooves, often with the assistance of healthy servings of dub delay. Highlights are plentiful, from the low-slung, percussive dub disco flex of "Track 1" and midtempo disco-funk bounce of "Track 2", to the riotous funk of "Track 4". All are expert revisions, with just the right amount of house style bottom end amongst the original grooves.

Lihue
Playing With Fire
Review: According to Athens of the North, it's taken the label some three years to convince Hawaiian singer Cypriano Nohelani to permit them the chance to reissue this batch of tracks. It's certainly been worth the effort! 1979 smoulder session "Lihue" is a warm, cuddly affair charged with yearning emotion; it's a beautiful slice of barbed soul. "Playin' With Fire" (taken from her '82 album In The Evening) is a much more forthright boogie affair. Disco with 80 production flourishes... Just wait until that guitar solo kicks in. Careful; you might lose your trousers.

Review: Known best for his role in cultish Swedish production unit Studio alongside Rasmus Hagg, Dan Lissvik has resurfaced on Smalltown Supersound with the first of a series of singles that will precede a much talked about solo album for the label. Those familiar with the sumptuous cosmic meanderings of Studio will be immediately at home here as soon as those velvety keys roll out over field recordings on "Intro" and from here Lissvik opens up his sound palette in panoramic style. "Airwalk" is quintessential Scandofunk, taut basslines, ethereal vocal harmonies and rich yet subtle instrumentation whilst there is a delightful flutter to the title track "Shuvit" that will captivate Lissvik completists. Review: Destination early 80s Brazil: RCA have curated four previously rare cuts from some of the country's most acclaimed boogie exponents. We ignite with Brenda's Don Beto-produced funk strutter "Natureza Viva", all jazzy chord progressions and razor-sharp tightness. It's followed Rosana's unequivocal synth boogie swooner "Alegria No Ar" which features players from both Banda Black Rio and the mighty Azymuth.
