Sudden Haircut (9:55)
Synthfrilla (5:21)
Synthgok (7:00)
First Glimt I Ogat (6:41)
Review: Dark Entries are simply a good record label, enough said. However, we will give you a touch of context on this latest killer, a four-tracker by the mythical Frak trio, still wearing their aluminium hats after twenty years of head-banging. "Sudden Haircut" has been recorded exclusively for the label, and it's a delicious techno lick with a crescendo of XOXBOX acid, while both "Synthfrilla" and "Synthgok" were recorded in 2010, and have previously appeared on the much coveted Sex Tags Mania label out of Bergen, Norway - both essential bangers. The finale is in the shape of "First Glimt I Ogat", another of Frak's classic drum-led house weavers that works both on its own and mixed into just about anything. Recommended gear - be quick!

Aguirre (7:02)
Clarky Cat (4:28)
Shark (7:18)
Clearwater Bay (5:43)
Review: Four Legs are better than two! Born Free man Samo 'DJ' Forsberg continues his assault on 2016 with this killer TTT 12" as Four Legs alongside Skudge overlord Elias Landberg. The pair have already issued a 12" together under the Split Image name for Swedish label New Dimensions (which you should totally check out) and this Four Legs stuff finds Forsberg and Landberg partaking in some no-nonsense, heads down machine funk. That's the flavour for opening cut "Aguirre" whilst title track "Clarky Cat" (Chris Morris reference anyone?) finds the Swedish duo veering off into deeper, psychedelic territory. "Shark" is as marauding as the sea creature it takes its name from, whilst "Clearwater Bay" ends on a more serene note.

Witches (Red Axes remix) (7:59)
No 9 (Red Axes remix) (5:36)
And We Hear "I Love You" (Red Axes remix) (7:26)
Liqueur Ruby (Red Axes remix) (7:34)
Review: Crete's Lena Platonos is a Goddess of the piano, and her illustrious career spans over thirty years. Having reissued the excellent Platonos album Galop last year, Dark Entries return with another dose of Lena goodness, transforming her gentle harmonics into dancefloor bliss. The culprits are Tel Aviv's Red Axes, who start their thrashing by moulding "Witches" into a deep, sleek, and masterfully contained groove featuring the artiste's vocals at the helm - perfectly detuned and distorted. "No9" is a broken shred of steely drums and bass, while "And We Hear I Love You" goes for an industrial approach, and "Liqueur Ruby" for the lo-fi and mystical. Warmly recommended.

Search (6:04)
Deep (5:57)
Inside (6:41)
Yourself (6:01)
Review: To commence their 20th birthday celebrations, British techno imprint Blueprint has naturally turned to some of their pals for fresh material. Thus, we get Search Deep Inside Yourself, Surgeon's first appearance on James Ruskin's imprint for 19 years. The Birmingham producer naturally rises to the occasion, surging between metallic loop-jams ("Inside"), bleep-heavy broken techno brilliance ("Deep"), and surprisingly warm, tribal-enthused techno anthems ("Search"). Arguably best of all, though, is closer "Yourself", which sounds like Jaydee's "Plastic Dreams" after 20 years on crack, several spells in jail, and a brutal gang beating. Sure, there are few surprises, but when does Surgeon ever disappoint? You know the drill.

Luna (4:52)

Save It (For Yourself, You Tory Scum) (5:52)
Sneakin' Out (5:44)
Review: Casio Royale returns with a second volume of In Basements for Glasgow's finest Dixon Basement Avenue Jams. "Luna" is booming and funky as hell, plus check that melody. "Rudderless" gets on with the fierce acid techno side of things just nicely too. On the flip, there's "Save It (For Yourself, You Tory Scum)" another contender for title of the year; this is dirty, Chicago style hard house reminiscent of classic Green Velvet, even with its helium induced monologue while "Sneakin' Out" gets that classic Derrick L. Carter style tech house happening, reminiscent of classic Tone Theory or Sound Patrol. Tip!

Lone Passenger (8:10)
Voltage Player (7:08)
High Strung (5:55)
Review: The majority of Obsolete Music Technology output from Chicago's Steven Tang has come through his own Emphasis Recordings label since he first started producing under the name back in 2007. He did however break with tradition by contributing an Obsolete Music Technology slab to Dolly in 2012, and Tang now returns with a second offering for Steffi's label. Across the three tracks, Tang's mastery of his craft is more than evident, displaying a rawness that is often craved but not always achieved these days. It's hard to pick out a favourite here, with the title track's classic Chicago vibe complemented by the more intense racing "Voltage Player" and the cascading rhythmic hits of "High Strung". Class always tells, and this Love Passenger 12" has it by the bucketload.

The Bounce (5:54)
Surrender (feat Cat Yen) (2:26)
Review: Man of the moment Dax J is back with more doom laden and treacherous techno. The Monnom Black head honcho is this time launching The Invisible Man EP at us. Featuring on the A side we've got "The Wonk" but there's no Life & Death style melodies on this one: that stuff could only wish to be as fierce as this peak time adrenalizer. The title track is a rough acid techno stomper reminiscent of something on his last Shades Of Black album. On the flip "Wir Leben Fur Die Nacht" reminds us that yes he lives in Berlin, he most likely passed his Deutsch A1 class and indeed we do all live for the night etc but this sounds more like Sunday mass at Berghain: an industrial strength menace that is absolutely ferocious! A surprise addition is the dark and immersive ambient journey "Surrender" featuring Cat Yen's curious Chinese dialogue drenched in delay.

Night Adrift (6:18)
Hiraeth (6:31)
Review: French producer Jeanson Antonin aka Antigone represents the new wave of techno artists, and he has made his mark on labels like Token and Demented. Saudade is his follow up to his 2015 debut on Kr!z imprint and it showcases why he is held in high regard. "Night Adrift" is a tense, tough roller, its metallic drums precisely crafted. On the flip, he delivers "Hiraeth"; there, the rhythm is intricate yet also dense and robust, with a tonal bleep fading in and out of the arrangement and the listener captivated by the few elements that Antonin has seamlessly brought together to have such an impact.

Review: Last year saw Ukranian producer Mikhaylo 'Vakula' Vityk drift away from the house and techno mysticism he was renowned for to focus on a pair of esoteric and conceptually heavy albums inspired by Scottish writer David Lindsay and Jim Morrison. This Modulations EP for Moscow's Arma label sees Vakula fully embracing a deeper strain of techno, and it's a fine addition to the Ukrainian's bulging discography. There's a breathless intensity to all four tracks here (all titled "Modulations" in numerical order) which find Vakula narrowing on the perfect balance between abstract sound design and the capacity to shake walls. Fans of the Prologue and Geophone approach will love this 12"!!

Living Is Serious Business (Life acapella) (9:39)
Living Is Serious Business (Carl Craig remix) (7:05)
Review: Given that he's always approached life with a cheery gusto, there's something rather ironic about Tim 'Love' Lee being involved in making a track called "Living Is Serious Business". Happily, he has man-of-the-moment Aaron 'Fit' Siegel by his side. The duo's original version is something of a trippy, late-night treat, with dubbed-out keys and percussive flourishes riding a dark Detroit bassline and fizzing, Motor City techno groove. It sounds like something that the brothers Fett would release on Sex Tags Mania, which is definitely a bonus in our book. Carl Craig does a sterling job on his flipside remix, retaining some of the original's eccentricity while adding a sweet melodiousness and production polish all of his own.

Track 4 (7:11)
Track 5 (7:10)
Review: 13 months on from his last outing for the label, Detroit veteran Delano Smith returns to Sushitech. From Silence is typical of his output for the imprint, and presents an evocative late night fusion of shuffling techno hypnotism and locked-in deep house. "A1" sets the tone, with warm, delay-laden riffs stretching out across a hazy, trance-inducing groove. The more up-tempo "B1" keeps a similar ethos while moving further towards techno territory, as does the more obviously dubby "C1". "D1" is a deep, picturesque treat with a brilliant extended breakdown, while closer "D2" is as toasty and comforting as a drunken, fireside cuddle. It's this track - dreamy and tactile, with slightly looser beats - that arguably stands out, despite the high quality threshold throughout.

Form (7:19)
Lockers (5:09)
Review: The recruitment of Robert Hood is a sign of Dekmantel's growing stature as a label. The Detroit legend has agreed to release a trio of EPs and an album under the Paradigm Shift banner, a project title designed to reflect the producer's desire to see great change within dance music. This first EP is classic Hood, with A-side "Form" - all effects-laden drums, looped-up textures, hissing cymbals and cacophonous kick-drums - sounding like no-one else. Flipside "Lockers" follows a similar script, though there's a little more house-influenced funk to the relentless beats, while Hood's use of starburst riffs and classic Motor City electronics adds a sense of far-sighted adventure.

We Move As One (3:24)
Review: French label Dement3d continue their fine run of techno double packs on their first release of 2016, which offers an almighty soundclash between Concrete residents Antigone and Francois X. Both can be considered key artists in the current Paris scene; Antigone has delivered a succession of killer 12"s since his emergence in 2011 on Construct Reform whilst Francois X first made his name on DJ Deep's Deeply Rooted House in 2009 before co-founding the Dement3d label in 2011. We Move As One is the end result of the pair working together over the past three years following an invitation fo Antigone to join Francois X in "Dement3d's inner circle headquarters". One of the tracks here, "The Hated SZ," was made the very first night the pair started working together and it was clearly the impetus for them to continue collaborating. Let's count ourselves lucky they did, as these eight tracks make up a fine collection of nocturnal techno.

Review: Dixon Avenue Basement Jams has vowed to make 2016 their "most productive year to date". They've certainly started in impressive style, with this collection of drum machine driven, basement bothering box jams. It's the work of label "new boy" Casio Royale (we chuckled, at least), it wildly swings between clattering sweatiness and ragged, acid-flecked wildness. He starts with the relentless throb of "Hell House", before venturing into heavier territory with the distorted synths and clattering percussion of "Fun House". Flip for the 8-bit electronics, raging acid lines and fizzing rhythms of "Joyrider", and the undulating acid trip of the deliciously psychedelic "I Finish".

Review: 2016 is going to be Transmat's 30th anniversary. Derrick May's Detroit institution is going to celebrate in style with a bunch of new releases this year starting with this new one by Tokyo's Hiroshi Watanabe. The title track nails the Transmat sound perfectly in all its high tech and soulful glory. "The Leonids" is evocative with its emotive strings and epic piano melody; you could just imagine May's joy when he first heard this one. On the flip "Soul Tranitions" is just that; there's one razor sharp synth lead on this one, check it out. Finally "Aperture Synthesis" is the perfect combination of "Strings of Life" and "French Kiss" if we've ever heard it!

Eclipse (6:47)
Review: It's not that long since Boris Bunnik dropped his most recent Conforce full-length, but already the man of many pseudonyms is donning the alias again. Predictably, North To South Part 1 is full of the kind of shimmering, melodious, futurist treats that sit somewhere between classic Detroit techno and mid '90s British intelligent techno. All four tracks are superb, making picking highlights somewhat tricky. Today, we're particularly enjoying the icy pulse of the B12-ish "Syncronized" and the classic Transmat flex of "Eclipse", but tomorrow that could change. Opener "Dark Days" - all rich, intergalactic chords, snappy snares and stargazing intent - is arguably the best of the lot.

Review: Irreverent online music platform Ransom Note have been keeping the spirit of Jockey Slut well and truly alive in the digital age since 2009. Sensing that house and techno is currently lacking in labels characterised by a sense of humour, Ransom Note have decided to launch their own with the debut offering from Madrid based mystery producer Bawrut. Originally released digitally through local Madrid label Silencio last year, it is good to see "Ciquita" and "1234" make it onto 12" here with the former presented in slightly amended form via a R$N edit. If anything the rambunctious acid delight of the track is embellished further on this killer edit, which is complemented nicely by the mind bending vocal edits of the flip.

Review: Nicuri has appeared previously on Sound Theories with the Spectrum EP back in 2014 as well as Growin Music and Yygrec. Now we have the Replay EP featuring "No Exit", this is stomping warehouse techno, New Jersey style, with its grating bassline, harsh metallic strikes and white noise washes; this is one relentless groove! On the flip is "Shinar" which is more on the house tip; the kind of darkly soulful and emotive type: think Strength Music (which he's released on previously) or Soul People Music. A dreamy hypnotising melody, swirling pads and tight groove all round. Tip!

Signifier
Review: Chuck 'em in a black bag and give 'em a blotchy stamp. That's Delsin's modus operandi when it comes to re-releasing their favourite older material. And following their re-up of Son.Sine's beautiful Upekah 12", Claro Intelecto's first ever release makes its way on to the prominent Dutch label, a solid decade after it was first released on the now defunct Ai Records. For that 'must have' feeling "Tone" is the track you want to hear first; a gnarly acid work out of Drexciya-influenced techno that's been dragged through the mud and sounds all the better for it. Before that though there's a deeper and electro-leaning "Peace Of Mind (Electosoul)", and while "Signifier" mirrors it somewhat, it's deep house that's pure as the driven snow. And if you needed any more proof that Intelecto is the master of a phat-bassline, look no further than "Contact".

Review: It certainly feels as if Tessela and Truss are making up for lost time with Poly Kicks. Tessela's all-conquering Hackney Parrot heralded the label's arrival back in early 2013, but Poly Kicks was put on hold until late last year when a fresh 12" from the UK producer announced its return. After a Haroon Mizra-helmed deviation into the first of a series of locked groove releases, Tessela lines up the fourth Poly Kicks 12" with the swift one-two punch to the guts of bass bins everywhere that is Swimming With Dance. Up top, "With Patsy" finds Tessela expertly constructing a tribalist swerver punctuated by an endlessly messed with vocal loop. "Swimming" will be just as deadly in the club!
