Review: ** REPRESS CREW ** Wild Oats don dada Kyle Hall steps up with a long awaited debut album under the KMFH moniker - expect rough, raw machine funk Detroit style across two slabs of wax on The Boat Party. Emerging at the age of 17 on FXHE, Hall has long been referred to as a wunderkind but this LP should really establish him as a fully fledged player in the pantheon of current Motor City producers. From the off, this eight track set feels like Hall recorded straight to tape, with his noted talent for incessant drum machine work and glistening melodics somehow making their presence felt amongst the thick, mulchy, saturated finish that clogs up the channels. Seemingly not occupied with any sort of conceptual ambitions beyond the economic statements of the cover art and title, Hall is left to work through his full range of devastating dancefloor manoeuvres with a few surprises along the way - the high octane ghetto tech "Finnapop" will surprise many. "Detroit Hustles Harder" remember!

Fred P - "Project 05"
Juju & Jordash - "A Stab In The Dark"
Big Strick - "Heyday"
Review: One of Panorama Bar's most recognisable residents, Steffi, celebrates her introduction to Ostgut Ton's Panorama Bar mix series with the album's sampler. First Up is Fred P with his deep and melodious "Project 05", while Juju & Jordash's "A Stab In The Dark" features more of the live techno-poppy-electronica heard on their Techno Primitivism album. Detroit heavy hitter Big Strick turns in a dust covered "Heyday", which features a cluster of drippy bleeps and heartfelt leads that sound like they were made by analogue poltergeists in a waterlogged, but sun drenched studio.

Press Play
Mind Set
Attitude
Review: Although Joey Anderson's profile has been on the rise since appearances on DJ Qu's Strength Music and his own Inimeg Recordings, it was his appearance on Levon Vincent's Fabric 63 that seemed to herald his arrival, with the sublime "Earth Calls" showcasing his deceptively complex take on deep house to the world. This new EP on Latency is a similarly trippy journey down his wormhole; "Press Play" combines disembodied vocals and improvised keys with his trademark looping background textures, slowly opening themselves out into something warm and enveloping. "Mind Set" takes a similar approach, but with an even sparser choice of tools, its detuned vocals mingling with tribal rhythms and a subtle mix of pads and organs; "Attitude" finishes with a rattling combination of raw percussive textures while climaxes with a warm but complex embrace of chords. This guy is one of the most interesting deep house producers in the game right now - don't sleep!

Review: Although Michigan is well inland from the North Atlantic Ocean, it doesn't mean Detroit can't make techno for the high seas or uncharted waters. Terrence Dixon's Lost At Sea 12" for the Surface label founded by Nick Dunton and the late Richard Polson sees four tracks of "Untitled" Detroit techno traverse through a sonic field of Joey Anderson and DJ Qu house drums, while saw-wavey Drexciyan qualities and Jeff Mills techno loops also circulate the EP. A deep and heady 12" of U-boat rhythmics for the techno underground.

Somewhere
Review: Following Psyk's excellent label debut for Mote Evolver in the shape of Distane, the producer returns for another EP of robust, yet minimalistic techno. The title track is as tripped back as they come, utilising simply a stomping kick drum and metallic bell tones to create a devastating techno tool; "Surface" is similarly sparse, but trades earth shaking qualities for an idiosyncratic combination of irregular claps which are thrown into the mix alongside slender synth stabs. "Intern" meanwhile takes things on a funkier tip, where distant snare rolls and marimba-like tones combine to create a deceptively simple techno tool; it's a stark contrast to "Somewhere" which is significantly brighter in its approach, accenting Psyk's fierce rhythms and dub chords with a colourful cluster of house-inspired stabs.

Depth Of Light
Like A Cat's Shadows
Break Something That Breaks You
No Home No Flag
Dont Shit On Your Own Doorstep
Review: Grey Series 04 comes from the farthest corner of Eastern Europe courtesy of Ukrainian techno artist Stanislav Tolkachev, whose music explores the darker, surreal fringes of electronic music in its purest, rawest state. Retroactive seams run through his sound from the grainy analogue qualities of his Detroit-facing sound, through to the classic stills that emboss his discography. Depth of light sees Tolkachev plot more intoxicating, caustic dream sequences, translating fitful night terrors into a diverse and multifunctional EP. Beginning with the woozy title track we confront fears ("Like a cat's shadow") and anxieties ("Break something that breaks you") on the feverish A-side, before flipping over for reserved reprieve ("No home no flag") and acid-washed revenge ("Don't shit on your own doorstep").

A Is For Acid (Perc redux)
A Is For Acid (Perc Mod mix)
A Is For Acid (MPIA3 Definition)
Review: Perc Trax Ltd is a sub-division of Perc Trax which will focus on collaborations, reissues and one-off specials. Last year the climbing melodies and peaking acidics of Mat t Whitehead's "A Is For Acid" became a London underground hit, championed by Perc and Truss, aka MPIA3, with Blawan also unleashing it in a Boiler Room set. Whitehead's original mix does not appear on this inaugural Perc Trax Ltd release, but there are no less than two Perc reworks - one of which should come with a warp drive warning attached - and a slamming cover version made by MPIA3 using none of the track's original samples.

Two (original mix)
Two (Syntax Interpretation)
Review: Belgian label Token dip their toes in the reissue game with this marbled vinyl presentation of a Mark Broom cut from 2002. Originally released through the Coda offshoot of James Ruskin's Blue Print, "Two" apparently highest amongst Token boss Kr!z's personal favourite Mark Broom productions and the track still sounds immense some eleven years on. A classic example of Broom at his most relentlessly thumping, "Two" is given some contemporary context on the B Side with a Syntax remix whose spacious textures and brushed syncopation offer a more serene accompaniment. Broom's original also features alongside Xhin, Ben Klock and Surgeon on a forthcoming label compilation from Token

Outcast
Vanishing Point
Periphery
Review: With numerous vinyl, CD and cassette releases over the past 20 years, Orphx are true techno veterans; Boundary Conditions marks their third release for Adam X's Sonic Groove label, and sees them continue to blur the lines between techno, industrial and noise music with stellar results. "Outcast" begins with a tunnelling bass pulse, slowly giving way to savagely distorted synth blasts, gradually building to a frenzy of broken noise. "Vanishing Point" is similarly beautiful in its abrasiveness, coating its simple beat with distorted drum rolls and delicate tones, while "Periphery" takes a gentler approach letting its textures and rhythms unfold and breathe in more cavernous surroundings. Once again the duo prove why they are one of techno's most enduring outfits.

Call Of The Wild
New Surroundings
The Outermaze
Review: Although he's been working with Bookworms under the Confused House banner and Ron Morelli on the Two Dogs In A House Project, The Outermaze is the first full solo transmission we've seen from Jason Letkiewicz's Steve Summers moniker for almost year, and it marks something of a rebirth for the producer. Gone is the Chicago-inspired jack, to be replaced with a bold take on hardware techno, filled with sinister synth textures swirling in the void; "Call of the Wild" pairs its touch rhythms with a belching bass synth that sounds like a grizzly bear, while "New Surroundings" utilises the kind of sharp, ragged acid-inspired synths that nevertheless sound strangely melodic. "The Outermaze" is the real killer however, with ragged percussion and discordant keys bristling over a pulsating bassline. We're fans of pretty much anything L.I.E.S. at Juno HQ, but this record is something quite special indeed.

White Owl
The Fast Lane
Drop Dead
Review: Operating at a speed of releases that shouldn't be possible with your label boss is in the midst of a 3 month European tour, the LIES juggernaut spits out its latest slab of essential, grizzled floor weaponry in the shape of this White Owl EP from Delroy Edwards. This three track release maintains the high BPM trajectory of Edwards previous LIES transmissions, with the A Side title track a rugged, heads down DJ tool that could feasibly have been lifted from the unreleased archives of Dance Mania. The same no nonsense approach is retained on the flip, though "The Fast Lane" is markedly less aggressive, relying on a central warbling motif to capture your attention; "Drop Dead" winds it back to the stripped back, gnarled kick drum flex. Strictly for the DJs.

Sun Storm
Onkalo (Karenn remix)
Challenger
Review: Sun Storm sees Niels Luinenberg return to the precise, electro-influenced sound of last year's Traces album for Delsin, with a title track combining a clean acidic bassline with rougher atmospherics in the background. It's joined by album track "Challenger", a more sinister production with sprawling pads and spiky, high-pitched strings. Given Luinenberg's relatively clean sound it comes as some surprise that the raw techno-leaning, hardware based Karenn duo comprised of Blawan and Pariah have been approached to remix the similarly icy "Onkalo", which previously featured on Traces; however, the pair's the snare-heavy rework acts as in interesting contrast to Luinenberg's original, isolating some of the original's melodic elements and caking them in industrial grit.

Review: ** Repress for the dons ** Thankyou based Bankhead for this much needed repress of the mini LP from Leipzig power duo Kassem Mosse and Mix Mup aimed at fending off scrilla hungry Discogs sharks but also offers some a chance to replace their battered copies from the first pressing. KM MM breezes through a dizzying and highly experimental range of tracks, happily placing genuinely thrilling moments of sonic bombast next to arrangements that came across like three different tracks mangled together. In the midst of all this, "Birds Flying In The Sun Like U Know How" is calming and unashamedly odd, the ghost of Nina Simone plunged deep into the plucked, malfunctioning house groove.

Fear Eats The Soul
Next
Untitled
Review: San Francisco residing UK visual artist come techno producer Oliver Vereker returns to LIES with the final part of two devastating releases for Ron Morelli's towering label. For those not in the know, Vereker was already an established part of the L.I.E.S. family, having co-produced videos for last year's Mutant Beat Dance and Two Dogs In A House releases along with Juan Bocca. Both reflected the grimy L.I.E.S. sound with a grainy, colour-saturated VHS aesthetic which was encapsulated in the throbbing, disintegrating quality of Rosite, Vereker's debut LIES 12" from last month. And it very much continues here with the title track from Fear Eats The Soul scraping away at your senses like The Black Dog at their best. Face down, Vereker goes for the grubby, basement techno approach on "Next" which appears to use a sample of a distant chainsaw as the basis of the bass line whilst "Untitled" is droning, rattling acid techno at its best.

Run For The Dark
The Galaxian
Review: If there is one producer to make punishing and dub-tinged techno for the club, it's Developer. The fourth release on his Archive sub-label to Modularz is a five-track EP of rock hard, but spatial sounding techno, which starts with the pounding and Jonas Kopp-like runaround of "Moments Of Clarity". Sharing the A-side is a settled and slightly trippy "Ursae Majoris". Combine the styles of DVS1 and Markus Suckut with Developer and you have the track "Reaching", while Mike Dehnert techno qualities shine through in "Run For The Dark". The final track of Archive 4 is "The Galaxian", which hovers above a drop that never comes, nestling into a dark and treacherous groove instead.

Terminal Code
Flight Control
Depressurization
Blue World Below
Review: Dutch producer Samuel Van Dijk continues his aviation themed dissections of subaqueous electro with Flight Control, a superlative debut for the ever excellent Tabernacle imprint. Those who indulged in International Airlines, Van Dijk's debut album for Lunar Disko last year will find much to admire across the four tracks here; lead track "Terminal Code" sets the tone, snapping with a degree of rhythmic viciousness that's straight out of the Gerald Donald school of thought. The title track adopts a more optimistic, star gazing approach with the loose, blurry chords allowed to ripple delicately over the stripped back drums. Face down, "Depressurization" quite brilliantly descends into murky nearsilence at one point whilst "Blue World Below" is perhaps the best example of Van Dijk's capacity for razor sharp percussion and deep set dubbiness.

Truss - "Buckholt"
AnD - "Not Sheep"
Ascion - "Narrow Alley"
Sunil Sharpe - "Sacred Granid"
Review: Run by Tom Dicicco and Mancunian pair AnD, Inner Surface Music has maintained a steady rate of output since it was established in 2011. It's the first release (and first ever various artist EP) for the label this year and unsurprisingly raw and punishing techno is the order of the day. AnD line up alongside Truss, Sunil Sharpe and Italian producer Ascion, with the latter's "Narrow Alley" a tubular, twisted and repitched industrial version of Jeff Mills' "The Bells". "Buck Holt" is the first showing from Truss in 2013 after recently bringing an end to his MPIA3 alias, while the inclusion of Earwiggle Records boss Sunil Sharpe sees the Dublin-based techno veteran step further into the limelight with his Blawan-Karenn sounding "Sacred Granite". Tough British techno.

Untitled A1 (Ben Klock remix)
Untitled A2 (Edwin Oosterwal remix)
Untitled A1 (Ben Klock bonus dub)
Review: As a self-confessed Terrence Dixon obsessive, this writer found it difficult to accept the concept of his work being remixed at all. That said, Ben Klock does a fine job of imbuing the Detroit producer's music with a sense of dance floor abandon. Klock's main version sees the Berlin producer lay down an insistent, stripped back groove, its shrieking stabs hitting the listener like the icy jolt of a winter morning. Klock's dub is more rolling and filtered, but contains a punch thanks to its metallic percussive licks. Edwin Oosterwal also delivers a high quality take on "Minimalism", with a slamming rhythm and dry hats providing the basis for a dramatic, sweeping chord sequence.

Que Barbaro
Casio Dub
Review: Erik & Fiedel's tantalisingly intermittent MMM project dusts itself off and gets pec-flexing for another bout on their own label with this assured two-track heavy hitter. There's no time wasted with the sassy stomp of "Que Barbaro" which works off a Latin guitar lick and some no-nonsense Soca drum arrangements, sporting the same fearless embrace of repetition you'd hope for from the wider Smith N' Hack camp. That said, this is definitely more on the crowd-pleasing summer mega-hit end of the spectrum than your average MMM release. "Casio Dub" gets a touch wilder with its overdriven bass and playfully teased sample loops, but still played out with restraint and poise. Once again though, the Soca break informs the groove which should find it working in more experimental kinds of sun-kissed outdoor parties.

Review: Ostgut Ton keep their fires of 2013 well stoked with a new EP from Detroit luminary Edinburgh's most illustrious techno import Rolando who first appeared on the famed German imprint and nightclub with the rare white label 12? 5 To 8 released in late 2010. The D & N's EP marks another release in what's becoming an increasingly impressive year for Ostgut Ton, with a Function LP, Panorama Bar mix from Steffi and numerous 12"s already released. Rolando brings the heat across three tracks that are primed with the sinister funk Detroit-inspired drum sequences tailored made for the residential DJ sets of Herr Dettmann and Fengler.

Heart & Soul
Sprk Tha Dust
Review: Repress alert! Whilst we were busy polishing off the Quality Street over Christmas, Ron Morelli decided to launch another LIES offshot with the LIES XMAS series - Delroy Edwards helms the inaugural release. Those who indulged in Edwards LIES debut 4 Club Use Only will see the word "curveball" flash before their eyes when listening to A Side track "Heart & Soul" a production which demonstrates the newcomer is fully capable of a more subtle approach. It's a simple but compelling production where brisk claps are underpinned by a chiming melodic motif and a calming, titular vocal hook that sounds naggingly familiar. It's backed with "Sprk The Dust" a wholly more aggressive affair which submerges a chopped up Lil Wayne deep beneath a relentless 150bpm jack hammering beat. Check YouTube for a rather good fan video for the latter btw!

Third Side - "Under Arrest"
John Barera & Will Martin - "Reality"
Steffi - "DB011"
Review: Speaking at length for Resident Advisor's Exchange series of podcasts recently, Panorama Bar resident and Dolly label head Steffi was in typically straight talking mood and her apparent lack of interest in engaging in the promotional game for releases on Dolly speaks volumes as to how she approaches the label; it's an outlet for her to release the music from artists she likes with the minimum of fanfare. Of course it helps to sell records when Dolly releases are of a consistently high standard, as this Various Artists 12" resolutely is with 3 cuts from her Panorama Bar mix CD present and correct! Despite the illustrious presence of Klakson co-founder Dexter, Third Side and Steffi, it's the playful classicist US deep house of "Reality" from John Barera and Will Martin that truly stands out!

Hidden Cities
High Heel Sleaze
Judge By Machine
Review: Emerging On L.I.E.S. last year with his own individual take on hardware-based house music, Svengalisghost's Mind Control EP offered a unique take on the jacking Chicago framework. Supposedly an advocate of what he calls the "Anti-Beat", the producer uses his hardware to reconstruct what he's learned from the original pioneers of house and "retransmits the sounds which lie somewhere in the realm of unhinged synth punk or industrial forward-thinking beat electronics." The results on the Vicious Circle EP are even bigger in scale than his debut; "Hidden Cities" is pure warehouse techno, combining stern, floor shaking kicks and psychedelic acid tendrils, while "High Heel Sleaze" is a similarly gnarled track, whose mechanical rhythms are caught up in a maelstrom of analogue texture; "Judged By Machine" closes with distorted acid lines playing off against a ghostly, indistinct vocal trapped inside the melee. Another killer from L.I.E.S. - don't sleep.

Strength (ROD remix 2)
Review: Markus Suckut is nearing the release of his debut album DNA, but before its unveiling comes his second remix EP on his own SCKT label. DVS1's linear but debauch rework of "Scoria" deviates in shape and sound for a remix that would nestle neatly to DVS1's exhaustive and tableland Berghain sets. ROD supplies two versions of "Strength", with the first remix applying a high pass filter to full effect as ride cymbals move from being sequenced on the kick, to the off beat. ROD's second remix implements a low pass filter to the synths, modulating their sound with gentle exhaustion, while adopting a different hi-hat arrangement of short fire bursts, with brisk snares patterns also added
