Hold On
Ride To Freedom
Hold On (Sisi Bak Bak remix)
Review: Young Turks present a collectors edition of the SBTRKT and Sampha gem "Hold On", a considered highlight from last year's critically acclaimed self titled LP by the former nu jazz player. Strictly limited, this 300 pressing is housed in a vacuum sealed plastic sleeve that holds a lenticular image of both artists, the type of design craft we've yet to see on another record - it's seriously impressive and quite fun to play with! As for the music, house lovers have already adopted the delicate "Hold On" as their own, with a rather smart smoothed out edit courtesy of the Love Unlimited Vibes lot already in circulation but the SBTRKT completists will want this edition for sure. Complementing this is "Ride To Freedom" a new SBTRKT jam that straddles the line between velveteen electro and more recent juke sounds deftly while the mysterious Sisi Bak Bak remixes the title track (NB this might be Thom Yorke but who really cares?)

Dust March
Rise 'Em
Metzger
Dog Sweater
Review: Hessle Audio's emergence from hibernation in 2012 really has seen the label release some of the most extraordinary music of its life, and this EP from Bandshell might top the lot. Tapping into the grainy, murky sound world of the like of STL, Shed and Actress, this record explores strange rhythms constantly on the verge of breaking out into a frenzy. The title track is comprised of little more than rattling percussion and dense, fizzy bass, while "Rise 'Em" places a jungle breakbeat atop a mucky hum. On the flip, "Metzger" takes the vibe of classic dubstep and fills it with subtle melodies and clipped snares, but "Dog Sweater" is the real killer - a homage to soundsystem culture whose threadbare rhythms are the only thing to stop you being dragged into the track's viscous centre. Make no mistake, this is a serious new talent.

Hypnotic
Feels So
Review: As if you weren't sure about the electro leanings in Swamp 81's operations, this new slice of machine funk from Tes La Rock under his new Trusta guise puts paid to any doubts. There's pure 808 goodness rocking out of every orifice of "Hypnotic", as a Touchin Bass kind of bleak but heavy funk takes hold. It's a simple idea delivered with devastating precision. "Feels So" meanwhile sets its course for vintage jungle, stopping just early enough to keep a lower BPM in which to wrestle the breakbeats. With a wild flair to the construction of this track, Tes has proven his undeniable gift for devastating, era-crossing music.

Modeselektor - "Maik Teh Chicken"
Martyn - "Red Dancers"
Review: Ahead of a second volume of curations for their Monkeytown label, Modeselektor waved this cheeky two-tracker under our noses. The German champs themselves are up on the A-Side, with the lean and mean throb of "Maik Teh Chicken". It's subtle, broken techno that plies an unusually deep trade for them, whereas Martyn is in a feisty mood with his side of the wax. "Red Dancers" is on a rough, broken beat tip with bouncing drums, snaking acid lines and an eerie sustained note hovering in the background. It's fearsome stuff executed with the panache we've all come to associate with the flying Dutchman.

Des Bisous
Dub Bisous
Review: Kowton really proved his worth in 2012, coming out with a strong line of releases and even giving us a cheeky preview of what more madness is to come in 2013. "Des Bisous" sounds like a resurrection of grime, resuscitating its stark hi-hats and snares but coating them in a more futuristic arrangement. The flipside, "Dub Bisous" delves deeper into the percussion, amassing those wild slices of drums and snares into deeper, thicker waters. Unmissable!

Rift
Signal Loss
Among Those Metal trees
Review: EXPERIMENTAL/ELECTRONIC: Returning after an excursion into the world of techno with Blawan as Karenn, Pariah returns with his first solo record since 2010's Safehouses, and it's probably his most assured work yet. "Rift" provides some spectral 2-step, but rather than the Burial school of thinking Pariah goes deep into smoggy industrial territory, accented by dramatic strings and tunnelling bass. "Signal Loss" meanwhile is a melancholic piece of woodblock driven, ghostly R&B, but "Among Those Metal Trees" is the most affecting of the lot, a beatless soundscape shrouded in a grey warmth.

Fade (G Vump remix)
Review: Jon Convex - otherwise known as Intsra:mental member Damon Kirkham, will be releasing his debut solo album very soon, but first he offers three tracks from the album via a gorgeous double 12" package. "Fade" is a big surprise - with forlorn male vocals singing over a backdrop of melancholy synths, only the tight 2-step drum pattern stops it sounding like a lost 80s synthpop classic. "New Model" meanwhile takes the mutated form of techno and bass Kirkham has been developing over the moniker with wobbling subs swinging underneath a firm 4/4 rhythm, while "Shadows" is a stripped back affair filled with rough synthetic rumblings, and contemporary rhythmic swagger. Finally G Vump - aka Brodinski and Guillaume of The Shoes - provide a unique dubstep inspired take on "Fade" filled with footwork referencing rhythms that has more than a bit in common with Kuedo's recent output.

Ne1Butu (original)
Ne1Butu (SCB edit)
Review: Whatever your opinion of Scuba's divisive album Personality, there's no denying that "NE1BUTU" was one of the album's brightest moments. Taking a punchy breakbeat and upbeat piano riff, the track is Paul Rose's love letter to pretty much everything great about every dance track from the 90s. Those that wish the producer would return to his darker ways however, can take comfort in the accompanying remix, in which Rose dons his SCB hat and turns it into a lean techno tool that cloaks the original's colour in shades of grey, creating one of his most incisive club tracks to date.

What Matters
What Matters (James Fox rmix)
Review: Following their last 12" from Bristol producer Artefact, Deadplate Recordings hit up the combined talents of Hackman and Bluto for their third release. "What Matters" is an upbeat piece of UKG influenced house, filled with whipcrack snares, manic keys and bright, ravey tendencies. On the flip, James Fox opts for a deeper revision, making the most of the delicate vocal and stretching it out over a swung rhythm, stripping it back to the bare essentials, opting for clouds of wafting synths rather than an all out assault.

Hours
Review: Hypercolour offshoot Losing Suki is really starting to come into its own right now with its expertly curated take on garage influenced bass music. Here they present the talents of Bareskin, a producer who is adept at mangling vocals in all manner of interesting ways. "Flow" takes a well spliced vocal and partners it with all manner of square wave madness, while the slow swung rhythm of "Control" opts for the sinister pitched down effect. "Delirium" meanwhile elasticates them atop a threadbare rhythm whilst "Hours" swathes them in delay whilst 808 cowbells and subs keep time.

Chirpsin
All Alone
Review: Though Red Rack'em will be known to most for his earlier output, which covered the spectrum of classic disco and house, the man otherwise known as Daniel Berman finds himself on Ramp of all places, with what can only be described as his most interesting record to date. Taking the palette that his served him so well over the years, and making it leaner, more percussive and drawing inspiration from contemporary bass tropes, with "Chirpsin" drawing on classic 2-step and filling its corners with heavy dollops of dub techno. "All Alone" meanwhile takes that echo chamber techno and adds some cautious flourishes of pitch bent chords which flip the track inside out. One of 2012's most interesting reinventions.

Hoop Dreams
Microweight
Review: From the opening strains of Blacksmif's "Hoop Dreams", it's obvious that Blacksmif slots quite nicely into the niche of post-garage producers experimenting with brighter textures and vocal samples. But there's something undeniably rich about his productions that single him out as someone who is considerably ahead of the competition, with the title track coming on like, more textured version of Jacques Greene's productions. "Microweight" meanwhile is a leaner affair, with dreamy drawn out chords that sneak up on you out of nowhere, and that seems to be sampled from a dusty jazz record.

Vrybdy
Don't Make Sense
Review: Continuing to bring serious crossover heat to Somethinksounds, Eliphino is pulling no punches on his latest emission for the fledgling label. "Vrybdy" rides on a chunky, swaggering stomp that's just broken enough to move beyond being straight house music, while the samples come looping in with a barrel-load of hip-hop attitude. It's a thoroughly functional belter that will slot ably in between all manner of contemporary electronics. "Don't Make Sense" meanwhile gets all raggamuffin in its disposition, busting out the soca break and some cheeky MC licks for a steaming slice of summertime rowdiness.

Half On A Baby (Mosca remix)
Half On A Baby (Dubbel Dutch remix)
Half On A Baby (Mosca remix dub)
Review: Dre Skull's Mixpak Records scored quite the coup when they got Jamaican bad boy Vybz Kartel amongst their ranks with last year's Kingston Story LP, and now they follow that up with some floor-friendly, autotune-heavy versions of "Half On A Baby" from Mosca and Dubbel Dutch. Mosca's take is a measured garage house cut with a steady bassline and the heavily processed vocals ticking away at an even pace, while Dubbel Dutch plumps for the Soca break in a rowdy style. The whole of the B-side is given over to a dub of Mosca's mix, reaching out to those who don't feel the robotic voice vibes. Recommended.
