Review: Since emerging in 2019, Inflo's socially conscious, politically charged Sault collective has delivered a string of inspired, impossible-to-pigeonhole albums that thoughtfully reflect on what it is to be black and British in the 21st century. Nine, the crew's latest set (and first of 2021) is every bit as incendiary, versatile and impactful as its predecessors, with the 10 collected tracks touching on everything from drowsy R&B, spoken word, classic soul and post-punk rock, to UK bass mutations, gospel, jazz-funk, Charles Stepney style excursions and hazy downtempo beats. Mixing live instrumentation and electronics with a wealth of spoken, sung and rapped vocals, Nine is a genuinely stunning, thought-provoking album full of razor-sharp lyrics and brilliantly executed musical movements.

Did You Hear What They Said (3:45)
Review: Based in Vienna 's trendy Mariahilf district, soulful radio station Superfly 98.3 is of course named after one of the greatest hits of soul - by the legend Curtis Mayfield. They regularly play music off the beaten track: soul, funk, jazz, disco, Latin and electronic of various genres. Back in 2010, the late great Gil Scott Heron appeared live in the studio. On the A side of their inaugural 7 inch, you can hear Heron performing 'We Almost Lost Detroit' and They're New Here', while on the flip we have some more poignant classics in the form of 'Your Daddy Loves You' and 'Did You Hear What They Said'.

Never Gonna Stop (5:13)
Deuzy Vibe (4:22)
Review: Although the Australian outfit Regime roots are in revivalist funk, 'Never Gonna Stop' sees them turn their hands to warm, loved-up and sun-kissed soul of the kind that was once all the rage in the mid 1970s. The grooves are toasty, the male and female lead vocals effortlessly soulful, and the instrumental touches - think languid jazz guitar solos, sweeping strings and lazy, trumpet-heavy horn arrangements - little less than superb. Flipside 'Deuzy Vibe', a P-funk flavoured, turn-of-the-80s boogie-soul style affair, is almost as good. There aren't that many of these -vinyl 45s around, so buy now to avoid disappointment.

We've Only Just Begun (3:15)
I'll Do Anything For You (2:54)
Review: This hugely in demand modern soul masterpiece gets a special 40th anniversary reissue thanks to the Selector Series label. Originally released on New Jersey's Debbie Records in 1981, the label has dug into the archives to find a boogie-tactic reworking on a classic standard from The Carpenters. Often seen listed for over L400 on second hand markets, it is a serious collector's piece. It's been reissued as part of various albums over the years but never on a slick 45rpm like this. It comes with original artwork and will have any dance floors in a spin.

Believe In Love (Phat Phili mix) (4:16)
Believe In Love (4:54)
Review: One of Teddy's final hoorahs, "If You Believe In Love" saw the late great soul troubadour of love take on the thriving sound of new jack swing. Its emphatic gospel chorus and sentiment are timeless but if anything, the 25 years that have passed since the release have aged the track well. It's the Phat Phili remix, however, that most will swoon for. The gilded work of Def Jef, the Phat Phili mix gives Teddy's innate sensuality and authenticity much more room to really work its magic. Believe.

Open Soul (20:14)
Review: Floating Points reissued this album on his Melodies International imprint is of Open Soul, the 1976 debut album from Chicagoan soul/jazz-funk fusionists six member outfit Tomorrow's People led by four Burton Brothers. The album is notoriously hard to find, with original copies occasionally changing hands online for eye-watering sums of money. It's a terrific album, as is this welcome reissue on the Japanese label P Vine with obi strip. Spanning a wide range of soul and jazz-funk styles - from the rubbery, sax-laden disco-funk bump of "Let's Get Down With The Beat" and doo-wop influenced "Hurry Up Tomorrow", via the blistering "Hurt Perversion" - it's an inspired collection that stands up to repeat listens. Epic flipside cut "Open Soul" - a 20-mimute trip into space-soul territory - is especially good.

Wish I Didn't Miss You (3:52)
Wish I Didn't Miss You (remix) (4:17)
Review: Oooh! Angie Stone's "Wish I Didn't Miss You" definitely belongs in the canon of all time modern soul classics. Taken from her 2001 second album Mahogany Soul, the Swizz Beats produced track made optimum usage of an O' Jays sample and was instrumental in that LP going gold and propelling the former D'Angelo collaborator to stardom. It also inspired countless official and under the counter remixes with Blaze's perhaps the most recognisable. So yes this reissue on 7" from Outta Sight is worthy if you don't have the original in your collection and features a housed up remix from Hex Hector on the flip.

Review: With Valentine's Day fast approaching, Athens of the North has decided to deliver a licensed reissue of one of the rarest, finest and most loved-up southern soul albums of all time, William Stuckey's 1979 set Love Of Mine. It's never sounded better, too, thanks to some meticulous work repairing and remastering Stuckey's original master-tapes. The album itself is typical of the dancefloor-friendly soul sound of the period, with Stuckey and his collaborators flitting between immersive, glassy-eyed songs, string-laden disco jams, synth-sporting, P-funk style numbers and the kind of down-low instrumentals you'd expect to hear sound-tracking Blaxploitation movies of the period. In a word: essential!

Get A Good Feeling (4:22)
Just A Little Notion (3:06)
Review: Athens Of The North serve up a mighty fine taster of a singles LP that is due to drop soon of Brief Encounters most popular modern and disco sounds. Both the tunes here are stone cold classics licenced direct from the band. 'Get A Good Feeling' is all big horns and rolling rhythms, disco flourishes and squelchy bass. On the flip, the tone changes completely with the heart aching balladry of 'Just A Little Notion'. Falsetto vocals are off set by warmer backing singers, pained wind leads ring out and spoken word sections bring the intimacy.

Yes I Am (3:57)
Yes I Am (instrumental) (3:57)
Review: Over the last five years, few contemporary soul artists have more successfully blurred the boundaries between '60s soul, vintage funk and gospel than Michelle David and regular backing band Gospel Sessions (a studio outfit helmed by her producers and collaborators Onno Smit and Paul Williamson. 'Yes I Am', David's first single of 2021, continues where her previous work left off. It sees her delivering a soulful, super-sweet lead vocal atop a wonderfully retro-sounding soul backing track that reminded us of the similarly inclined work of Durand Jones & The Indications and Timmion Records stalwarts Cold Diamond & Mink. The A-side full vocal take is our pick of the pair, though the accompanying instrumental is also predictably good.

Date With The Rain (8:03)
Dub With The Rain (7:54)
Review: Nick "Linkwood" Moore and Euan Fryer established East Coast Love Affair with the idea of making it the "Athens of the North house band". They've recently released a slew of singles, of which this sparkling, soulful cover version of Eddie Kendricks' favourite 'Date With The Rain', featuring the silky voice of lover's rock legend Peter Hunningale, is arguably the most revelatory. Rich in leisurely but ear-catching drum machine patters, warming bass and spakrling synth sounds, the duo's full vocal cover version sits somewhere between lover's rock, street soul and mid-80s electrofunk. Fittingly, it comes backed with 'Dub With The Rain', a delay-laden instrumental take that subtly showcases the depth and beauty of the pair's backing track while also adding a little extra low-end grunt. Simply sublime.

You & Me (radio edit) (4:23)
Magic (4:51)
Review: Sean Oliver's club soul favourite 'You And Me' gets a new release here having been a sleeper hit since 1997. It came back then on Sean's Solitaire album as well as on a 12" maxi, but has been hard to find since. The great production comes from Boomtang Boys and the tune has already been getting lots of plays. The lazy grooves, gentle bongos and soothing chords sound like a UK version of neo-soul don Maxwell, with 'You & Me' really hitting a perfect soul sweet spot. Things pick u pa little for 'Magic' which is a mid-tempo soulful house roller with big clicks, drums and vocals.

Stand In For Love (2:50)
Loves Needed (3:07)
Review: This 7" originally released on Horoscope was the only single that Pandella Kelly ever put out. There is no information out there about her and no copies for sale on the most popular secondhand vinyl market out there. A-side jewel 'Stand In For Love', written by E Levert and featuring co-production by B. Massey and W.WIlliams, is a strident soul tune with soaring vocals and a fat and funky bassline. On the other side is 'Loves Needed' is a slow and sumptuous sound with lavish backing vocals and gorgeous strings.

Supremes - "Uptight" (2:50)
Supremes - "Money" (2:58)
Review: The Soul Monsters imprint has dipped into the back catalogue of premier Motown legends and chosen two killer covers of songs first made famous by other artists on the iconic soul label's roster. On the A-side you'll find their storming version of Stevie Wonder hit 'Uptight (Everything's All Right)', a take that's just as stomping and horn-heavy as the more familiar original, with the added bonus of smoother soul vocals from the ladies and first time on 7 inch vinyl. Turn to the flip for their interpretation of Barrett Strong hit 'Money (That's What I Want)', a more fuzzy and sax-laden affair of a song that was famously also covered by the Beatles on With The Beatles.

So Trusting (4:13)
So Far Down (4:01)
Review: The late James Kelly Duhon hailed from Beaumont in Texas, and in the late1960s he was in a group known as The Ascots. He put out a small but well formed selection of tunes and those included the two pressed up here to this limited 45rpm. 'So Trusting' is a big number with noted bass and big orchestra string stabs. On the backside is 'So Far Down' which actually got a national release on Mainstream Records while Duhon was still touring. It's a deeply affecting bit of soul musing on the lack of employment and a longing for the good times.

Give Me The Sunshine (6:21)
I'm Back For More (5:02)
Review: You'll find few jazz-funk era rays of sonic sunshine better than 'Give Me The Sunshine', the career highlight of relatively short-lived American soul band Leo's Sunshipp. It originally opened their 1978 debut album, We Need Each Other, but later became something of an anthem throughout the UK on the jazz-funk and rare groove scenes. If you don't already own a copy, you should cop one of these reissues. The full six-minute version of the track featured on the A-side is little more than a languid bob through sun-soaked pastures full of liquid bass, simmering strings, whistling synth lines and a smooth, ear-catching lead vocal. Also worth a listen is flipside 'Back For More', a more up-tempo modern soul club cut that's not quite as incendiary but every bit as alluring,

All My Love For You (4:18)
Review: Athens Of The North has never been shy in putting out music. The label is always working on a wealth of different projects it seems and this month drops a couple of very tasty - as per usual - 7"s. Rivage was a leading band in the 70s modern soul scene and one long loved by the Athens label head. He put out a first-ever reissue of their Sit-in On It LP last year and now serves up some of the singles from it, namely the flute-led joy of 'Strung Out On Your Love' and 'All My Love For You,' a comforting soul tune with swirling grooves and classic falsetto vocals. Lovely stuff.

This compilation, pressed to clear vinyl, features a mixture of previously released gems and unheard material from the label's growing roster of artists. Highlights are plentiful throughout, with our picks including the heartfelt, piano-sporting brilliance of 'Nobody's Clown' by Lost Yesterdays, the Motown style stomp of Jason Joshua's 'Language of Love', the close harmony bliss of Thee Sacred Souls' 'Will I See You Again' and the slow-burn sweetness of the Altons' EP-closing 'Tangled Up in You'. Review: The Kent label takes it back to 1967 for this gorgeous soul nugget from The Exits, a US soul group from Los Angeles who made only four singles, but who made a huge mark. Their sound married late-'50s doo wop with mid-'60s soul and that is captured on 'You Got To Have Money,' with its swinging drums and feel good vocal harmonies. Review: From Yasmine's rare 2nd album "A Scent Of Flowers", which was released in just Netherland and left behind the one of the masterpieces ofA90s R&B "Wanna Dance" that has been compiled into numerous mixtapes and dance hit compilations, the popular cover songs Roy Ayers "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" and Ray Charles "Let Me Take Over" are finally single-cut with a superb cover that reproduces freshly with R&B manners!
