Aretha Franklin & Black Star - "Young, Gifted & Black" (4:50)
Aretha Franklin & Gucci Mane - "My Chain Of Fools" (2:48)
Review: Over the past few years, American producer Amerigo Gazaway has delivered some of the most inspired mash ups and bootleg remixes around, including a number that breathe new life into recordings by genuine soul and hip-hop greats. He's at it again here, crafting two killer cuts featuring the late, great Aretha Franklin. He first offers up a head-nodding take on 'Young, Gifted and Black' that cleverly combines his own beats, extended raps from Tallib Kewli and Mos Def as Black Star, and snippets of Aretha at her powerful best. Flip the disc for 'Chain of Fools', a stomping fusion of hip-hop and Detroit soul which sees him flit between Gucci Mane raps and more Aretha goodness.

Deep House
Black Romantic (vocal) (8:52)
Black Romantic (instrumental) (8:52)
Review: The original deep house master Ron Trent is back with one more soul soothing and utterly cathartic outing before this most turbulent of years draws to a close. This is the third release from his forthcoming Romantic Flight album and is a real house lament. He is in particularly spiritual mode here with 'Black Romantic' being a delicate house dance with sprinklings of percussion, acoustic guitar sounds and streaming synths all sinking you into a reverie while vocals drift up top. The instrumental removes that vocal and so ore focus is on the fantastic arrangement and instrumentation. Lush.

Deep House
Deep Again (8:10)
NMS (6:20)
Review: Lazare Hoche and Malin Genie join forces for a sublime trip through psychoactive tech house that edges away from minimal and into a more colourful, analogue headspace. 'Deep Again' revels in swooping pad swells and rounded lead hooks, of course strapped to one of those impeccably executed four-to-the-floor beats. 'NMS' jacks things up with a punchy synth line and snappy claps that are perfectly honed for the peak time, but there's still a luxuriant melancholy lingering behind the rhythm section thanks to more spacious atmospherics. This is as classy as tech house gets, but what else did you expect from two operators in their absolute prime?

Drum & Bass / Jungle
Opus III (5:57)
Kingz Of The Castle (5:05)
Review: What happens if you take a big vocal sample and drop it over a rinsing, old school jungle break beat? The first tune here, 'Opus III', that's what. It's a high energy affair that might well raise some eye brows given the vocal, but you can't help but admire it's all out joyousness and air of celebration. Flip it over and you'll find something just as divisive - another clattering jungle tune filled with kinetic kicks and flurries of snare, and once more a well-known vocal from Whamdo Project's 'Kings Of The Castle.'

Hip Hop/R&B
Think (3:33)
Atom (2:57)
Review: Mr Bongo continue to shine a light on classic hip-hop with their excellent curated reissue series. They have two Main Source 45s in their sights and this is the second. When it first came out on Actual Records, it soon sold out and became a much sought after piece with copies going for high prices on the second hand market. And for good reason - the band really hinted at the greatness they would go on to achieve with an impeccable three minute rap single making a massive mark. 'Think' is a superb example of how to take well known samples and flip them into something fresh.

Review: A formidable reminder that 2020 hasn't been a complete wash-out, along comes Robert Hood following up his recent EP on Rekids with a brand new album. Three years - and what feels like a lifetime - since his Dekmantel collection Paradygm Shift, where his last LP saw a focused return to his most famous signature of minimal techno, Mirror Man is fully maximal. Digging deep across the spectrum, Hood cooks up a feast that spans emotional score-like beatless pieces ('Through A Looking Glass Darkly'), cloud-leaping, crystalline house music ('Face In The Water'), pranged-out acid that builds and builds without fully letting loose ('Prism') and some of the most wholesome bone-shaking techno he's made in years ('Run Bobby Run', 'Fear Not') As Hood says himself; nothing stops Detroit!

Review: If you, like us, like to reach for seasonal records at this time of year but can't often find things that aren't too cheesy, then hold tight: Kelly Finnigan's second album is full of holiday sounds with members of Durand Jones & The Indications and The Dap-Kings helping her cook up a warming, fire-side soul sound that you'll have on repeat all December. Inspired by records like Phil Spector's A Christmas Gift For You, this is a lovely affair with heart swelling vocals, 60s sounding hooks and nice rolling rhythm that are perfectly gentle as background music, but also striking when you give them your full attention.

Review: Born Abstract is a debut album from UK bleep and breakbeat master DAWL aka Dropout main man Darren Woollard on the Childhood Intelligence label. It's an intergalactic trip back to the future, with computerised melodies and heavy drums on 'Quadrant 6' then more manic techno stomps on 'Red Sky.' Elsewhere things get deep on 'Recon' a slippery and supple track with rich acid. 'Quantoum Jam' heads into electro territory and then it's an old school rave on 'I'm Confused'. Born Abstract is fun, fulsome, fantastic and as good as retro-future techno gets.
