Temporal Vessels
Dive (Wheel Of The Law)
Review: The Sorrow Of Two Blooms sees Tropic Of Cancer's Camella Lobo and Juan Mendez excel, ploughing further into the sonic mists, though there's a certain spectral delight to how the opening track unfolds, with Lobo's voice drenched beneath the reverberant drone but clinging to foggy strings that embellish the track with a certain degree of light. The languid thump of "Temporal Vassels" lays Lobo's vocals so deep in the mix you are worried she's trapped down a well whilst "Dive (Wheel Of The Law)" is perhaps Tropic Of Cancer at their mystifying, bewitchingly hypnotic best. Spread across the B Side, it comes cloaked in viscous fuzz, Lobo's yearning yet indecipherable vocals seemingly glued to the pensive guitar lines. The result is utterly captivating. The point where people discuss the merits of Tropic Of Cancer without feeling the need to mention the disparate relationship of their sound with Mendez's Silent Servant endeavours should be arriving sooner rather than later on the evidence of this release.

Sulfuric

Life Cycle
Mutation
Review: After debuting on Deeply Rooted last year with the ingeniously titled EP 1, French producer Marcelus serves further notice of his burgeoning talent for twisted raw techno rattlers with a sequel for the label. Equally simplistic in its titular leanings EP 2 begins in stomping fashion with the naturally acidic tones of "Sulfuric", with the sort of heavy flourishes throughout that can only elicit gleeful responses. This contrasts nicely with the rumbling heads down vibe of "Shape" which is all reverberant metallic textures cascading around the depths of the gloopy rhythms. Special mention for how Marcelus teases out those vocals! Flip over for the high level intensity of "Life Cycle" and the relentless alien rattle of "Mutation". Do check!

Yamagic
Moustache
Insummer
Slample
Review: The only way to improve on a label named as brilliantly as Moustache Records is to launch an offshoot called Moustache Techno. The Dutch imprint launches their new initiative in impressive style with four powerful techno cuts from the elusive and mysterious Gesloten Cirkel. "Yamagic" opens on an expansive experimental Detroit tip, with the rough percussive edges a nice contrast to the crisper jacking qualities that run through the guttural acid flex of "Moustache". Proceedings change up on the flip with the scratched industrial wooziness of "Insummer" brilliantly offset by a crunching half step kick. "Slample" closes proceedings on a decidedly odd note, sounding like Moodymann remixing Neucleus at the bottom of a well.

Axis Audio
Axis Audio (Echospace Model I)
Review: The second of three highly collectible 10" samplers from Mokira's upcoming album for Kontra Music arrives replete with a remix from Echospace, the deep and dubby collab between Rod Modell and Steven Hitchell. The original version of "Axis Audio" is a dark, dubby, clunking slice of ambient techno. The beatless track lurches forward through a darkened forest of mechanical creaks and eerie, bubbling atmospherics. Ehcospace endow the track with a rhythmic pulse as a 4/4 drum pattern enters the soundscape, yet manage to retain the original's underlying sense of menace.

Forever Frost
Tundra
Glacier/For Minou
Review: Swedish techno don Aril Brikha lays down some bewitchingly melodic techno on Art of Vengeance, with the title track a fine example of how to wrestle as much human emotion as possible from a machine, bringing to mind a 4/4 version of Actress's stunning "Maze" from 2010. Flip over for "Tundra" and "Glacier/For Minou", with the melancholic 80s vibe and rumbling low frequencies of the former complementing the icy cold synths and mechanical strings of the latter. Essential.

Review: Coming replete with a hand stamped Blue Tit (of the ornithological variety) the Avian imprint launched its debut release with the mystical sounds of Shifted - this year's most elusive producer who prefers to let his productions do the talking. And we're not going to disagree with this stance given Shifted's excellent output in 2012. Sounding vaguely reminiscent of the sort of techno excursions Mills has been exploring on the Something In The Sky series, the A Side gradually fills the expanses between the crystalline rhythms with chilling atmospherics. Proceedings on the B Side crawl through the lower recesses of noir filled swampish ambience - freaking these ears out for the first time since Demdike Stare's "Hashshashin Chant" - thankfully Shifted arises from the thick gloom with the fully reaching skeletal Berghain pump of the final track. Great first release and a highly awaited repress from this ever-promising imprint.

Full Clip (original)
Full Clip (Kirk Degiorgio Remix)
Review: Carl Craig's Planet E, currently celebrating 20 years in existence, needs no introduction. It's solid, classy, well thought out and boasts an artist roster that'll make your jaw drop. Here we see label stalwart Martin Buttrich's 2006 jam "Full Clip" re-issued with a Kirk Degiorgio remix. Ferociously pumping yet refined, Buttrich has hit the spot with this. A symphonic and forward thinking blend of drama and techno solidity invade as the track delves in and out of build ups and breaks that are enough to drive any floor crazy. Degiorgio's remix is an equally bold statement, not a touch on Buttrich's original but a worthy addition none the less.

Onmutu Mechanicks - "Calyx"
Brendon Moeller - "Farmhouse"
Luke Hess - "Kratos"
Resoe - "Tanzfieber"
Review: The key to the Echocord's longevity has been to focus on the deeper, dubbier side of techno, without worrying too much about what all around them are doing. Put simply, Echocord - now celebrating its 10th year - was releasing textured techno for the head and the floor before and after it was trendy to do so. This second sampler 12" showcasing the wares of Kenneth Christiansen's label ahead of a full 'best of' compilation release sees Onmutu Mechanicks, Brendon Moeller, Luke Hess and Resoe all making an appearance. Mechanicks's contribution turns the mood slightly more menacing as "Calyx" marches to the beat of metallic drums and teems with foreboding chords. This being Echocord however, reflective and evocative sensibilities are never too far away, and Luke Hess's "Kratos", although based on clipped drums, boasts breathy, shimmering melodies. Highly recommended.

Peter Van Hoesen & Donato Dozzy - "Dock"
Peter Van Hoesen - "Defense Against The Self" (Lucy remix)
Review: The fourth round of Time To Express's 61 Center Returning series arrives with label boss Van Hoesen once again at the helm alongside the ever excellent Donato Dozzy! "Dock" is a druggy epic, with menacing sonics gurgling around the tightly wound bass drum throb that propels your senses on a dark and long journey into the recesses of repetitive brilliance. Ensuring this release gets full marks from Juno, Stroboscopic Artefacts boss Lucy makes his debut on T2X with a booming remix of Van Hoesen's "Defense Against The Self" with dusty textures stretched across the rising machine funk dissonance. It's the kind of sweat inducing kick drum thumper that's designed specifically for darkened concrete spaces.

Trouble
Review: One half of Swedish techno duo Skudge - who just this week released an outstanding debut album - branches out under the Splice moniker on the Farden imprint. And instead of the raucous party techno that Skudge is known for, the new pseudonym gives the producer a chance to push a deeper, more cerebral sound - initially anyway. Stretched elegantly across the A-Side you'll find "Cobra", which locks into a cyborg melodic loop and rides it with aplomb till the end. "One Hundred" and "Trouble" share the space on the flip, with the latter impressing us most with brutal bass hits reminiscent of Planetary Assault Systems. Smack bang doof!
