Review: After a nine-year hiatus, Sheree Rashit and Steve Bicknell relaunch Cosmic Records with the Transcendence EP within their Lost Recordings division. Founded in 1993, the label ran in conjunction with the pair's infamous Lost events, which introduced acts such as Jeff Mills, Robert Hood and Basic Channel to the UK dancefloor. Past Cosmic releases include productions and remixes from US artists such as Juan Atkins, Tyree Cooper, DJs Funk and Rush alongside prominent UK names working under pseudonyms devised for Cosmic. Having previously released via Perfecto and Mute, Cosmic has provided a home for Steve Bicknell's releases since its' inception. His next phase continues the Lost Recordings series that began in 1996 with the 8th segment, Transcendence. Comprised of four untitled tracks in Steve Bicknell's inimitable style - a depiction of the Lost dancefloor - Transcendence, LR 8 is hypnotic with depth and soul, transcending boundaries, and is initially available on vinyl only. Played by: Jeff Mills, Laurent Garnier, Oliver Ho, Francois K, Ben Klock, Surgeon.

Review: Melbourne party enthusiasts Animals Dancing launch their self titled label with the sophomore release from Krautback duo Coober Pedy University Band (Tornado Wallace & William Paxton AKA Tom Moore of Otologic). Kookaburra, once described as "a bit too mental for me", continues in the vein of their Moon Plain release, but this time takes it a step further. Perhaps too far.

Review: Having struggled to find his niche during the early part of his career, things started looking up for Randomer when he popped up on Numbers back in 2011 with the bombastic blends of acid house and techno that made up his impressive Real Talk EP. Since then, he's impressively flitted between techno and bass music, and here delivers an all-out techno assault for Clone's occasional Basement Series. There's a real no-nonsese feel to the relentless kick-drums and cut-up vocal samples of "Stupid Things I Do", which comes in "New School" and "Old School" mix formats (the latter including some looser techno breakbeats, and thus being our pick). The 12" also includes two formidable percussion workouts, which deliver driving drums and booming basslines.

Protein Valve (re-plant)
Protein Valve (edit 1)
Protein Valve (edit 2)
Review: The Floorplan project show-cased Robert Hood's love of gospel-tinged house, but as this, his latest release demonstrates, he remains a techno artist through and through. The Protein Valve record originally appeared on M Plant 20 years ago and like Hood's Internal Empire and Minimal Nation releases, became a blueprint for minimal techno. On the "Re-Plant" and "Edit 1" versions, nagging, insistent percussion and an eerie organ sound create a sense of drama. However, the old approach proves to be the most effective and the second edit remains closer to the original sound, with jittery hats, unsettling organ riffs and the wind whooshing past in the background.

Banded
Review: Ilian Tapes meets The Trilogy Tapes! Munich-based DJ and producer Dario Zenker aligns with Will Bankhead's unassailable label for a quartet of aces housed in the most distinctive of record sleeves. Alongside his brother Marco, Dario Zenker has stealthily built Ilian Tape into one of our favourite techno outlets thanks to their focus on artists and productions that never slump into tracky functionality. This sense of personality is very much evident across the four tracks on Morsin; take for example the A Side where the murky rolling techno of the title track is complemented by the exercise in building breakbeat pressure that is "W3". There's a wonderful freneticism to "WM2" where a strident bass drum thud is attacked by a dizzying array of zigzagging rhythms, whilst "Banded" ends proceedings in resolutely abstract territory.

Review: Huerco S returns to the 12" format with this long delayed offering for the quietly impressive Proibito label under the shortened HS mantle. Keen followers of Huerco S will of course know the Brooklyn transplant inaugurated Anthony Naples' label last year with the rarely used Royal Crown Of Sweden alias and the four tracks on this A Verdigras Reader EP prove to be just as intoxicating. It's also arguably Proibito's most experimental release so far, compare the ambient amble of "A1" with Hank Jackson's offering for the label or the Levon-esque "POT" from Naples himself. Our tip of the four is "B1" which is little more than a dull siren constantly trying to reach its peak tone over crunched up percussion but the results have you pulling the needle back again and again.

Don't Leave Me
Plan A
Review: Whilst the most recent Modeselektion compilation saw Berlin pair Modeselektor pick from a largely established (if very varied) pool of artists, the latest release on their 50 Weapons labels shows Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary have not lost any of their canny A&R skills for uncovering new talent. The uniquely named Fjaak are a Berlin trio with "futuristic minds but already nostalgic feelings" and as far as we can tell this two track 12" is their debut release. Familiarise yourself with both cuts and you'll understand why Bronsert and Szary scooped Fjaak up, with a their rave ready productions executed on a mixture of hardware and software the sort of club focused music 50 Weapons has made it's name on. As immediate as the title track is, our pick is the tougher techno fix of B Side "Plan A".

Review: This eighth Dystopian record presents the debut proper of label co-founder Alex Do. Before this he appeared on the one various artist EP alongside Rodhad, Felix K and Recondite, and it seems now is his time to shine. He does so by putting heavy emphasis on the synth work in his music and all three tracks are melodic and bright in tone which is quite the contrast to the previous releases of the label. Combine your favourite synthy elements of Mathew Jonson, Legowelt and Laurent Garnier with some good old fashion 909 techno and you have Alex Do's Stalker.

EXhale
Review: Richie Hawtin once famously said "Vinyl is a pain in the ass" but here he is doing it again as Plastikman on the physical medium. The last album he made as under his revered alias came in 2003's Closer, and more than a decade later he provides EX, a seven-track LP recorded live at New York's Guggenheim Museum for a special performance at the invitation of fashion designer Raf Simons. From "EXposed" to "EXhale" each track varies in the way it beeps, bleeps and gurgles with super sweet acid. Italo synths take over in "EXtend" and "EXpand", while basslines and kooky electronics similar to Yello rise to the surface in "EXtrude". "EXplore" is a track for the Plastikman devotee while "EXpire" and it's climbing synth will be sure to drive the many festivals Hawtin plays this year toward pandemonium. Plastikman is back!

Somebody (Roman Flugel remix)
I Want You (Alan Fitzpatrick remix)
Review: ** Repress ** Making the third vinyl issue of the sturdy Treat Me Right remix package, Trusme is once again under the knife at the hands of some sterling talent. Roman Flugel is up first with a snaking, angular techno take on "Somebody" that fires off jerky beats and hopping synths in a deep and driving formation on a one-way trip to cerebral nirvana. On the flipside it's pure guts and muscle as Alan Fitzpatrick serves "I Want You" up as a stout, fist-pumping club rocker for any peak time floor or moodier situation to get seriously feverish to. With a sharp line in vocal chopping and some delicate dub touches this is one of those examples of simple devastation that will undoubtedly be rinsed all over club land.

Heeman
Mount Eleven
Kentay
Watz
Review: With their combined output and that of the artists they put out on Ilian Tape, Dario and Marco Zenker are certainly a formidable force in the German techno scene and here they're back on their own turf with four imaginative cuts that keep dancefloor focus in mind without giving way to tracky functionality. "Heeman" punches with the most forthright thrust of all the jams, riding some skippy hats over a rumbling tom-like bassline and tense synths, while "Mount Eleven" swerves out into broken beat territory with whirling wraiths of melody sealing the deal on a psychedelic and engrossing atmosphere. "Kentay" too comes packaged in a fragmented framework although the bottom end hits with a greater heft than its predecessor, and then "Watz" finishes proceedings off with a short sojourn into heavy-laden ambient material.

Wide Eye

MSC
Review: Though he first appeared on Wild Oats as part of NSNT PRJCT back in 2010, the music Manuel Gonzales produces as MGUN has largely surfaced on labels outside of his hometown of Detroit, with Don't Be Afraid, Berceuse Heroique and The Trilogy Tapes among them. His arrival on Aaron Siegel's Fit Sounds label is most welcome then; with the 3 track self titled EP proving further compelling evidence that Gonzales is becoming one of Detroit's current greats. There's a marauding nature to the bassline and rhythms in "Wide Eye" that will appeal to Jamal Moss fans, whilst "Debit" drags you down a gnarly acid rabbit hole. It's the B Side cut that really impresses however, with "MSC" seemingly embracing some of the experimental urges Gonzales has when recording material under the Savant guise with some truly atmospheric results.

Oist Mal
Review: Klasse Wrecks welcomes Bristol-based Marco Bernardi to its ranks following strong releases for Clone, Delsin, Rawax, Planet E, and most recently the Kelly Twins' Happy Skull label. Spacejam provides an EP of demented drums, fiddling electronics and refreshing originality, showcasing the signature sound of the studio-obsessed Scottish born DJ and producer. His idiosyncratic style runs through the three tracks here, from the space jack and Green Velvet-inspired vocals of the title track, through the rubbery funk of "No I Didn't" and frenetic acid of "Oist Mal".

Review: In terms of prolific techno artists, few others can match the output of Los Angeles-based Adrian Sandoval who has jettisoned over 30 releases in the past six years as Developer with the majority arriving via his own Modularz label. In Pure Form sees Sandoval take the raw, tunnelling brand of techno he's made his own as Developer and apply it to the album format. The full digital version of the album contains some 25 "tracks direct from the Developer factory of techno" all of which are named "In Pure Form". The vinyl edition pares the selection down to 12 and spreads them across three 12"s with this first one a perfect introduction to what to expect should you wish for a taste of the full In Pure Form experience.

Traxx - "BaseAcid2"
Amir Alexander - "Slow Ride"
Amir Alexander - "Six Sixty Six (The Beast)"
Traxx - "Abc Acid Beat Complete"
Review: Take the releases on Anunnaki Cartel into consideration as a whole and its clear label founders Amir Alexander and Chris Mitchell are looking and generally succeeding at ways to advance the ideas of US house music into compelling new forms. It makes sense then that this latest release on the label sees Alexander face off with Nation boss Traxx, a man who has been steadfast in his own efforts to promote and pioneer the Jakbeat ethos and approach. The Howard/Loyola Acid Frenzy EP finds the pair indulging in some truly wild acid explorations that will delight the proper house selectors out there. Traxx is on devilish form with his two contributions with the moment on "BaseAcid2" where the intensity levels unexpectedly ramp skywards is a particular highlight.

Motechnique
Roll Up & Shine
The Mood Device
Review: Itokim, aka Tendo-based producer Takuro Ito, aligns with DJ Bone's Subject Detroit label with the Subject Japan: Rhythm Poems EP and his opening gambit certainly leaves a dent. "Motechnique" has been a staple of Bone's 3 deck attacks in recent months and it will have eyebrows raised and mouths open from the off. Weighty but warm kicks start as they mean to go on, bursting with pace and vigour as thrusts and stabs pinprick the brooding chords. The laidback, easy-going connotations of the title to "Roll Up and Shine" are very much the ethos and aesthetic of the production, as a playful, bubbling melody sets a warm and almost sugary tone from the off before being bolstered by a suave melange of full-bodied kick and dexterous percussion. Itokim rounds off his first outing on Subject Detroit with "The Mood Device", a to the point groover that melds elements of the previous productions to stunning effect. A genuine builder of a track with a straight and true trajectory, "The Mood Device" melds innumerable coatings of percussion and synth as stabs are layered and layered again, clotting and coagulating the composition in to one delightfully deep and multidimensional slice of formidable dancefloor composite.

Acid Rain (Tapirus remix)
Deep Freeze (Anton Zap Stoned Faces Don't Lie remix)
Review: Following DJ Spider's debut on Nord, the Danish label gives the Brooklyn-based artist the full treatment with a four-track remix 12". The label has employed a varied cast to re-smudge or clean up Spider's sounds, starting with Token artist Ctrls who delivers, as always, a gruelling industrial take on an already very grubby "Absolute Zero". Steven Tang provides some effervescent respite to the original EP's title-track, "Northern Abyss", while UK producer Charlton under his Taprius alias delivers a remake of "Acid Rain" which sounds like something that might come from the Head Front Panel label. Anton Zap, like he does best, then drops in with some slower BPMs and trippy sounds with his unique take on "Deep Freeze".

Rectangle
Review: The flurry of activity surrounding M Plant's 20th anniversary celebrations shows no sign of abating as we reach the midway point of the year, with the latest offering from Robert Hood a rare revisitation of his Monobox alias. You have to peel through eleven years worth of Hood releases to get to the last time the Detroit icon used the Monobox alias (the Molecule EP on French label Logistics for the fact checkers out there) but this pair of new productions under the guise demonstrate he's lost none of his intentions to approach "minimalism from an alien, futuristic perspective". The deep and melodious "Film" appears here ahead of it's high profile presence in Marcel Dettmann's upcoming Fabric mix and it's a nice complement to the tougher machine funk of "Rectangle".

Review: The serious and subterranean techno adventures of NX1 continue unabated with the sixth installment on the German duo's self-titled imprint, adding more fuel to the cerebral, hypnotic fire being vigorously fanned by Donato Dozzy et al. The A side is particularly dreamy, as a tidal pad echoes out into the abyss and the percussion falls as light as a feather without losing that prerequisite dose of danceable energy. "NX 06 017" has a bit more bite as punchy synth sounds cut through the fog and the drum machines awaken, but it all leads up to the paranoid siren cycle of "NX1 06 018", which represents the livelier end of the NX1 repertoire.
