High Heels (feat Omar)
High Heels (Lack Of Afro remix)
Review: Agogo Records put out some serious jazzed out funk this year and Hidden Jazz Quartet's EP was among its best to date. The title track "High Heels" features the voice of Omar and it's a blissful modern funk piece - exactly what we want to see! On the flip it's the Lack Of Afro remix, a irresistibly upbeat and feel-good bundle of piano chords and gentle lyrics.

The Cinematic Orchestra - "Necrology"
Grey Reverend - "Regen"
Austin Peralta - "Lapis"
The Cinematic Orchestra - "Manhatta"
Dorian Concept & Tom Chant - "Outer Space"
Dorian Concept & Tom Chant - "Dream Work"
The Cinematic Orchestra - "Entr'acte"
Review: Given his long-standing obsession with film soundtracks, it's little surprise to see Cinematic Orchestra chief J Swinscoe delivering another project with strong audio-visual credentials. In Motion No. 1 is the first in a series of "re-imaginings" of soundtracks to short avant garde films from Swinscoe and friends. While there's a danger that such high concept work could be either pretentious or dull, for the most part In Motion succeeds. That's due in no small part to the talents of the producers and composers involved. There's a fragile beauty to the offering of Grey Reverend, while the two collaborations between Dorian Concept and Tom Chant (particularly "Dream Work", which sounds like the Orb with a string quartet) are simply magical.

Cicade Vazia (Suonho Sambossa restyle)
Mas Que Nada (Suonho Shuffle Rhythm renumber)
Barra Limpa (Suonho Natural Latin Jazz retouch)
Sambou Sambou (Suonho Genuine regroove)
Review: Suonho is an Italian producer born in 1974. That's the only information that we have of him! But that doesn't matter because his music speaks for itself and needs no introductions... "Cicade Vazia" is a samba-infused shuffle of drums and swaggering piano keys, whilst Mas Que Nada is the famous Brazilian anthem retouched here by our man Suonho who does an incredible job of editing such an absolute masterpiece. The famous "Barra Limpa" is also given a rerub and Suonho's mastery at arrangement shines through here. But "Sambou Sambou" is the EP's most infectious groove and it really calls for plenty of cocktails with tiny straw hats...!

Review: You know what a tempo dream is, right? It's when you dream you're playing the biggest gig of your life, you've dropped the best record you have in your bag, and you've dropped it at the wrong ruddy speed! Easily the worse dream since that one where you're naked with your mother in law, and twice as realistic. Everyone has their own version. Mercifully, Tall Black Guy has much nicer, more melodic, soulful, psychedelic tempo dreams where all records are played at the right speed and sound pretty much devine. Instrumental hip-hop with lashing of somnambulant soul and fortified funk, this is a late night dedication that's tailor made for mornings-after, candle-lit diners and entertaining your in-laws.

Brooklyn
Kilimanjaro (live)
Review: You can always depend on Freestyle to unearth and nurture the finest of funk's fringes, and The Shaolin Afronauts are a fine example of this great A&R. Sounding like they've just emerged from a Nigerian township circa 1970, but actually coming from Australia in the 21st century, their dedication to the Afro soul, Cuban funk and experimental jazz of the past four decades is commendably authentic. Pretty prolific, too: their debut album Flight Of The Ancients only came our way last year but yet they've already followed it up with an equally captivating, spiritually swinging sophomore that blasts, parps and fires its way into your brain. Conjuring the vibes of Fela Kuti, Sun Ra, Tony Allen and even dashes of Roy Ayers, this is one expansive long player.

Slipping (Into Tomorrow)
So!
Review: Cheeky label Bstard Boots delivered a useful 7" from consistent Irish producer Colm K, who takes on the Steve Miller track ''Fly Like An Eagle'' - retitled here as ''Slipping(Into Tomorrow)" - and wonderfully reinterprets it as a slo-mo disco tinged affair with a gorgeously funky live bass, sumptuous strings and chugging beats. On the flip there's ''So !'', which has Colm K going even deeper as Gladys Knight and the Pips barely recognisible soul gem ''The Look Of Love'' gets the treatment with hipity hop beats and sampled strings.

My Zindi
Regulate Your Aperitif!
Review: Resense have been on a roll in 2012, with new releases coming left, right and centre. Here we have more old-meets-new-skool frivolity, with two incendiary dancefloors excursions. Mambo is certainly the order of the day here, with "My Zindi" featuring 1940s-style crooners over a tight shuffling beat. "Regulate Your Aperitif" is insanely catchy, with a cool hip-house rap delivered over a backing that recalls "My Definition Of A Boombastic Jazz Style".

Review: A warm welcome back to Aussie funk/soul crew The Bamboos, who seem to have been off the radar since the release of 2010's Four. Here, they flip the script slightly on their fifth full-length proper for Tru Thoughts. While the rousing deep funk of old is still present, Lance Ferguson's crew have clearly broadened their horizons in the last two years. The result is their most attractive and well-rounded album to date. With regular vocalists and special guests (Aloe Blacc, most impressively) in tow, they dart attractively between dewy-eyed soul, Sly Stone-ish funk-rock (see "What I Know") and even country-tinged '60s soul groovery (the Tim Rodgers collab "I Got Burned").
