It's safe to say that more than a few people have been waiting more than a few months for this one to finally arrive. Dry Cleaning already made a pretty significant impact with efforts like that ode to Meghan Markle, 'Magic of Meghan', a track that not everyone will agree with in terms of sentiment but most seemed united in musical love for, and 'Goodnight', which firmly positioned them in the most exciting end of British punk.

New Long Leg continues on that fine form, and in many ways elevates the game significantly. Offering ten songs that set the band's proverbial stall out clearly, the record is a demand not to be taken too seriously, even if the music itself feels like the end result of more than a decade of serious fine-tuning and boundary-pushing on the part of the band members, who lay claim to past endeavours with hardcore and indie bands, and in the visual arts.

It's pretty much impossible not to get very, very excited about the prospect of a new Godspeed record. The outfit pretty much wrote the book on huge, epic, fantastical chamber rock with a punk edge when they first set about trying to soundtrack the decline of Western civilisation back in the late-1990s, and following reformation circa 2010 have only felt more relevant.

State's End! is a fitting addition to a back catalogue almost-entirely comprising landmark records, and while very much in the same vein as the band's previous, it's also original enough to confirm the group are still as incomparable as ever (albeit some have noted this album takes them one-step closer to a latter day Pink Floyd). Soaring, rousing, tense instrumental rock that also packs a vital message - the world needs to change tact before all is too late - it's likely this will be one of the year's most essential releases.

Review: During the 1980s, The Redskins became a celebrated English band. Next to their highly danceable indie output, they were also known for left-wing politics and a bold skinhead image. This new compilation, as the title suggests, brings together some rarities and hard to find tracks from their heyday. Elements of soul, rockabilly, pop and punk rock all inform their tracks and breath new life into the new wave and post punk forms they work in. Highlights include the strident 'Reds Strike The Blues' and fierce 'Young & Proud.'

Review: Greta Van Fleet are Michigan rock heroes. That was already established, but with their second album they manage to reach even higher heights. The Battle At Garden's Gate finds the group perfecting yet further what they already excelled at across a selection of hugely energetic tunes that still warrant comparison to Led Zeppelin, but only positively so. Swelling strings and outrageous guitar solos, deeply psychological lyrics and element sou desert rock and Americana all help elevate each track and the album overall. To be sure, there is nothing here that is dazzling new or original, but for lovers of a good old rock record, there are few better.

Review: The Velvet Underground are on the cover and inside Jonathan Richman shares exclusive secrets of Lou Reed's VU era guitar and gear, complete with his own illustrations! We go behind the scenes of the legendary sixties UK TV pop show Ready Steady Go!, and our Gabor Szabo coverage continues as his '60s era bass player Louis Kabok shares his extraordinary story. Then there's the second part of our interview with Cheap Trick's Bun E Carlos, Texas '60s garage band Word D, Pennsylvania teen garage geniuses the Shaynes ('From A Window'), Woody's Truck Stop (with pre-Nazz Todd Rundgren), and the wild saga of French underground iconoclasts Komintern. Not to forget an interview with Glenn Phillips (Hampton Grease Band, Lost at Sea), the story of Yellow Hand, a band that sprouted from a shoebox of unreleased Buffalo Springfield songs, Cyril Jordan on Phil Spector, and more! Plus our enormously popular review sections covering all the latest reissues and rock & roll-related books.

Review: The gold standard Big Crown label excels at heartbreaking Americana, blue-eyed soul and downbeat pop. A 116th release of such sounds now comes from Holy Hive who are back with a new bunch of songs after their 2020 debut album, Float Back To You, won widespread acclaim. Their trademark folk-soul sound is in full view once more here with falsetto vocals bring real heart aching over slow, downbeat drums. It's beautiful stuff that takes the form of two only subtle different singles here. Both wallow in their own sadness and delicateness but leaving a lasting impression.

That is despite the fact it went gold and features a one and only performance by the Bullring Brummies. They are a metal supergroup to end all supergroups with Rob Halford from Judas Priest, Scott "Wino" Weinrich from The Obsessed and Vitus; Fight guitarist Brian Tilse, and Geezer Butler and Bill Ward from Black Sabbath themselves, Elsewhere the Megadeath cover of 'Paranoid' get a Grammy nomination, making this essential for all fans old and new.

Arriving roughly two years after Salvadori and Ceccanti served up the sublime Almunia debut long player New Moon, this new album sees the pair of tracks released as singles (the excellent title track and 'The Magician') complemented by six all new productions. From the heavenly acoustic strumming of opening track 'The Awakening' Almunia remain locked in a mood where refined instrumentation is balanced perfectly with a chugging soft edged disco sensibility with the buoyant 'Views From A Blue Train' a particular highlight.

Review: When announcing the release of their new album, G'D's Pee at State End - their first full-length missive since 2017's Luciferian Towers - Godspeed You Black Emperor attracted headlines by calling for the abolishment of prisons, police, imperialism and the rich. Given that statement - one that is totally in-keeping with their anarchic attitude and music - you'd expect the album to be angry and rage-filled, but it feels more poignant and melancholic, thanks in part to the long-serving band's use of strings throughout the four lengthy post-rock soundscapes that make up the album. Peppered with blasts of shortwave radio, and rising and falling melodic themes, it's a far more cinematic concoction than many may have expected - a kind of sighing, tear-soaked soundtrack to the end of days.

This time out it's a is sublime four-tracker from the much loved Brazilian pair of Luli Lucinha e O Bando. It first saw the light of day in 1972 but has long since been lost to the public. Aspects of psychedelic rock, MPB and folk are all stirred dup with the tunes being held together by Luli and Lucinha's vocals. The EP is packed with magic and musical brilliance and also features Brazilian percussionist Alyrio Lima, who was a member of the iconic Weather Report in later years.

Review: Some 36 years after making an instant impact with their fuzzy debut album, alt rock originals Dinosaur Jr. are still going strong. Sweep It Into Space, the band's first studio album since 2016, is testament to their continued mastery of an art form that they helped to define and refine. All the usual staples of their sound are present and correct - think punchy, tom-heavy drums, alternately scuzzy and attractive guitars and J Masics' instantly identifiable vocals - alongside a seemingly new-found love of indie-pop melancholy and wistful musical arrangements (the latter almost certainly influenced by producer Kurt Vile). In other words, it's a grown-up Dinosaur Jr. album that ticks all of the right boxes.

It's fitting that The Reds, Pinks & Purples are likely to have flown just under the radar of many rock 'n' rollers. There's a calm, unassuming confidence to everything about the band led by Glenn Donaldson. He's not going to drag you in by the scruff of the neck, sit you down, stick noise cancelling headphones on your bonce, hit play and then watch for a reaction. But he also knows you won't look back after discovering him.

On this, the third Purples album, that feeling couldn't be more pronounced. Melodic vocals feel light enough to bounce off the uptempo numbers like 'A Kick In The Face (That's Life)' and title number 'Uncommon Weather', but then with poetry and proverbial songwriting that can't help but resonate, there's an unmistakable power here too, all wrapped up in joyously jangly, DIY action.

Review: Arabic funk, soul and folk specialists Habibi Funk are masters at digging deep to find extremely rare and unreleased music. Even so, their latest offering is particularly obscure. It's a retrospective of 1970s material by a Lebanese singer-songwriter called Roger Fakhr, who put out one self-released tape in the mid 1970s, of which only 200 copies were ever made. Some of those songs feature on this retrospective, but the majority of the material is unreleased tracks from Fakhr's archive. Interestingly, the majority of the music on offer is sung in English rather than Arabic and sits somewhere between American railroad blues, English revivalist folk of the sort popular in the late '60s and early '70s, sun-soaked Californian folk, and gentle folk. A genuinely eye-opening musical treat.

John L (5:15)
Despair (3:34)
Review: RECOMMENDED
'John L' isn't the most comforting single you will have heard recently, but it may be one of the most rewarding. Black Midi opening their latest with frantic drum rolls and tense melodic string loops, it conjures memories of movie scores like Psycho and Requiem For A Dream, seemingly threatening to explode into a new metal assault. That doesn't quite happen, but the hallucinatory cacophony - not a million miles from The Crazy World of Arthur Brown - leaves nobody behind. Or, more accurately, leaves no prisoners.

The English experimental rockers strike again, and with aplomb, as the track ploughs forward on its uncompromising, frenetic and anxious course, marking this out as arguably their most musically accomplished (certainly most musically extravagant) song yet. A huge contrast to the suitably redemptive, strangely empowering acoustic guitar and soulful vocal duet, 'Despair'. The word 'original' does not do this lot nearly enough justice.

Delivered on a heavyweight slab with a fancy gatefold cover, the reissued version features the bonus track 'Huck It', which was the title track of The Offspring's 2000 VHS/DVD Huck It, and anthemic song that has often been heard behind various skateboard stunts. Produced by Brendan O'Brien who also work with greats like Pearl Jam and Bruce Springsteen, the record packed din plenty of singles such as 'Want You Bad,' 'Million Miles Away,' and the biggest of them all, 'Original Prankster.'

Review: Following the departure of co-founder Gerard Love in 2019, many Teenage Fanclub fans feared for the future of the long-serving Scottish band. They needn't have worried. Endless Arcade, their first album since 2018, feels like a gloriously baggy, jangly and positive return to form, with the rejigging line-up confidently striding through hooky, ear-catching indie-pop songs laden with a combination of atmospheric acoustic guitars, jangling, Johnny Marr style electric guitar riffs, subtle references to the Stone Roses and the kind of glassy-eyed group harmony vocals that were once at the heart of late 1960s dream-pop records. A confident, accessible set of future sing-alongs that fans old and new should adore.

Review: Sacred Bones Records has been rifling through the vaults of legendary Suicide frontman Alan Vega, who sadly passed away back in 2016. As a result, they've discovered a swathe of unreleased albums, of which Mutator is the first to be released. It was recorded by Vega and long-time collaborator Liz Lamere in 1995 and '96 but was never finalized or mixed. With a little help from fellow Vega collaborator Jared Artaud, Lamere has finally finished it, revealing an unusual but hugely attractive set that combines Vega's distinctly poetic vocals with alien-sounding electronics, unsettling ambient tones, industrial funk grooves and stuttering drum machine beats. The result is an inspired, off-kilter treat.

Review: Coven's Witchcraft Destroys Minds & Reaps Souls is a true cult classic. It is also an occult classic with big Satanic themes and plenty of devil presence in its big rock anthems. The unabashedly Satan-worshipping songs were maybe a bit too much for the times - 1969 - so there was quite the hysteria in the media when it was released (mostly as a result of the Manson Family murders). So much so, in fact, that it was actually recalled. Still, nowadays there is plenty to enjoy about the hard rock and heavy metal styles it deals in.
