Review: Since shifting his focus more towards atmospheric, Balearic-minded sounds a few years back, Tornado Wallace has delivered some of the most deliciously humid and glassy-eyed music around. Hopes are naturally high, then, for this long-anticipated debut album. It picks up from where his sublime ESP Institute, Beats In Space and Second Circle releases left off, delivering a warm, evocative, sun kissed blend of shuffling Balearic grooves, horizontal soundscapes, gentle tropical workouts, and rich, synth-laden explorations. There's a pleasing haziness throughout, with live percussion and instrumentation rubbing shoulders with glistening synthesizers, ear-pleasing electronics and pulsing drum machine hits. In other words, it's a fine debut album.

Review: Having thus far released EPs for Aficionado and Music For Dreams, A Vision Of Panorama return to their regular haunt Mellophonia to expand on the promise of their shorter works to go deep into a Balearic dream on Aquafusion. It's a perfect meditation on serene funk from start to finish, spanning eight tracks of tender musicianship that sit very easy on the ears. The likes of "Surf Blue" almost do away with drums entirely in a quest for calm, while "Barbados" and others offer up a more sprightly vision of 80s-flavoured groove, but throughout the mysterious hands behind the record maintain a smooth and steady mood that binds the album together.

Review: Malka Tuti continues to be a hotbed of oddball, outernational wares for adventurous dancefloors, and the Israeli label reaches a new milestone as it presents its first full-length album release. Die Orangen is a project headed up by prolific Australian artist Kris Baha alongside Angelo Cruzman and Dreems, and following a single on Malka Tuti last year they come good with an album of psych-out brilliance that should have a broad reach from Balearic heads to wave-minded disco dancers. "To The Top Of Gloucester" shows they're happy to embrace experimental moods as much as direct hitters, and the loose, live band approach to the music binds all the different styles together perfectly.

Triangle Des Bermudas
Triangle Des Bermudas (Massimiliano Pagliara remix)
Cuban Omelette
John's Job (Rhythm track)
Review: Jules Etienne has been skirting around labels such as Apersonal Music for a few years, but here makes a strong statement with a new record for CockTail D'Amore. "Triangle Des Bermudas" is a swinging yet cosmically inclined jam powered by warm synth arpeggios, which regular collaborator Massimiliano Pagliara then nudges up into crafty deep house territory. "Cuban Omlette" is a delicate affair that interweaves pattering percussion and nagging synth lines to make a particularly heady brew before "John's Job" finishes the record off with a richly layered drum track that should have DJs across the board getting tricky in the mix.

Hiwa (3:24)

Zouklove (5:38)
Review: There was much excitement surrounding Granit Records' recent reissue of Claude Rodap's sole album, 1982's synthesizer-heavy fusion of traditional Martinique styles and (then) contemporary electronic music, Syn-Ka. Now Rush Hour is getting in on the act, issuing three more obscure Rodap productions - this time made around the turn of the Millennium - on vinyl for the first time. There's naturally plenty to enjoy, from the rainforest melodies, spacey synth-bass and gentle tropical rhythms of "Hiwa", to the glistening, guitar-laden Caribbean Balerica of closer "Zouklove". The track that sits in between, the denser, jazzier, solo heavy "Paco", is also superb.

Review: HNNY's been hibernating... After over a year of silence, the Swedish Grammy winning Stockholm composer returns with another sublime full-length. Taking things even deeper into his musical psyche with more introspection, ambience and solitude, Ta Paus rejects drums almost entirely in favour of blissful atmospheric weaves and sojourns. Sitting somewhere between Eno and Lemon Jelly with his own soft emotional charm we flicker through dusky late night jazz ("Till Dig"), graceful cascading lullabies ("Pa Solen") and evocative, bluesy roadtrips ("Trettio"). A visionary piece of timeless modern composition coated with just the right amount of electronic production, this is HNNY at his sweetest. Limited on one-sided vinyl.

Review: As he did to celebrate Claremont 56's fifth birthday, Paul "Mudd" Murphy has enlisted the help of the Idjut Boys to mark the passing of the label's first decade. This time round, the long-serving dub disco duo has put together a spellbinding, two-disc mix of specially commissioned material. Of course, they've gone to town, blending the label's 10th birthday tracks with oodles of dub delay, all manner of trippy effects, and a swathe of their own specially prepared dubs, DJ tools and re-edits. These intoxicating, mind altering versions are showcased in unmixed form on disc three, following two discs of horizontal Balearic bliss, slow-dance goodness and the impossible-to-pigeonhole antics of Can founder Holgar Czukay.

Review: Late last year, previously unheard outfit Bongo Entp released a digital-only debut album via Kenneth Bager's Balearic-minded Music For Dreams EP. Here, they make their first appearance on wax via a set that showcases both tracks from that samba-soaked set, and a string of new remixes. There's plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the heady, Azymuth-influenced samba-goes-jazz-funk shuffle of opener "Foto Felita Do Avaio" and synth heavy, dub-flecked warmth of "El Rey Do Pollo", to the near ambient, slo-mo dreaminess of "Lujon". Carrot Green turns that latter track into a mid tempo Balearic house shuffler, while Selvagem contributes a jaunty, dub-house interpretation of "Foto Filita Do Avaio" that's arguably the EP's finest moment.

Review: Nancy Noise has been a key player on the forefront of the Balearic scene since as long ago as the late 1980s (making appearances on various early Orb remixes and side projects), and the DJ/producer has enjoyed a new lease of life in recent years. Remarkably, "Kaia" is her debut solo single. The original version is the epitome of Jose Padilla style Balearica; a gorgeous fusion of Rotary Connection style instrumentation, flamenco guitars and eyes-wide-shut electric piano solos. It's accompanied by the grinning, dream house era dancefloor cheeriness of "Azizi's Dance" and two alternate versions of the title track. Man Power's quirky, electro-driven remake works well alongside Leo Mas and Fabrice's stunning house remix echoing shades of Joe Clausell and the golden era of Italian House music.

Review: Paul 'Mudd' Murphy has form when it comes to putting together must-have vinyl box sets. A few years back, he brought the Originals series of Balearic compilations to a close with a fine box set. Now, to celebrate the 10th birthday of his Claremont 56 label, he's put together another lavishly produced, five-vinyl set, this time made up of brand new or previously unheard material. As you'd expect, highlights come thick and fast, from the dubbed-out quirkiness of Holgar Czukay's "Music To Be Murdered By" and the rubbery electrofunk of Phil Mison's remix of FreshRo's "Pacific State", to the samba-boogie of Jex Opolis's remix of Paraiso, and deep space Balearic bliss of Leo Cecranti's "Andromeda Bound". Throw in killer reworks from Lexx, Bjorn Torske, Ron Trent, Larry Heard, Emperor Machine, and Murphy himself, and you have an essential collection.

Amor Y Odio
Running With Me
Instant Illusion
Review: Coming to life on a hazy cloud of natural instrumentation and meditative composition, Modern Manners tap into the appetite for delicate new age musings beautifully on this debut release. "Amor Y Odio" is laced with Spanish guitar musings that spiral out over a simple but effective drum break that harks back to classic downtempo, while "Running With Me" edges towards a more sprightly lounge headspace while retaining the rich musicality felt on the first track. "Instant Illusion" is propelled by a bassline that wouldn't sound out of place on a house track, but here its punching out in a subtle, laid back environment that aims to get you horizontal in the most sophisticated way possible.

Following "Standing Still Is An Illusion" on Rocksteady Disco come two more sublime Balearic affairs that fit Claremont 56 like a snug pair of speedos; "Sandbar Caviar" wafts and sways with island waves as gentle arpeggios ebb and flow creating harmonies and cosmic textures while "Inland Island" adjusts our seats to a horizontal position with its snaking bassline and spacious percussion gradually opening into a heavenly vocal and guitar lead that's tantamount to transcendental.

Emile (2:51)
Mokusho
Lysander
Review: According to International Feel boss Mark Barrott, Music For Presence is an attempt to broaden the evocative, downtempo sound he's been pursuing for the last few years. There's certainly a wider palette of influences on show, with opener "Shopenhauer's Garden" adding fluid synth solos to a backing track that doffs a cap to 1970s German synthesizer greats such as Tangerine Dream. The humid and sticky ambience of "Emile" sounds like Finis Africae jamming with Steve Hillage, while "Mokusho" blends cascading, life-affirming synthesizer motifs with spaced-out electronic beats and glistening chords. Closer "Lysander", with its bubbly electronics, cascading trumpet and impeccable piano work, could have come from the studio of Music From Memory regulars Gaussian Curve.

Review: Leonidas and Hobbes are old studio buddies. The duo's first collaborative release landed back in 2013 and they've been putting out occasional joint missives ever since. The Rags Of Time EP may well be their best 12" yet, though. Check, for example, the jaunty analogue nu-disco shuffle of opener "Web of Intrigue", where lo-fi synthesizer melody lines, Mexican horn samples and decidedly Balearic guitar solos wrap themselves around a gently bouncing groove. Or, for that matter, the "Acid Rain" mix of "Heavy Weather", a cheery triple-time workout built around clicking drum machine hits, thrillingly dusty synth stabs and tipsy electronics. The slightly jauntier and dreamier "Dawn Mix" of the same track is also rather tasty.

Review: Originally released in 1999, the cultish reputation of the mysterious Blindboy's sole offering to the world has attained it a high second hand value, and so Archeo Recordings have done the right thing and actioned a reissue. Ruckus In Lo Fi is steeped in Balearic guitar tones, downbeat hip hop cuts and forays into sumptuous jazz funk. There's also a remix from Joe Morris, who fashions a brooding, epic remix of "I Dream" loaded with simmering tension without losing the funky warmth of the original. With all kinds of mellow pouring out of this one, any stone cold chillers out there won't want to sleep on this one.

Noche (dub) (5:19)
Review: This breezy, hand-stamped 12" comes with little or no information about the producer (or producers) behind it. It's hard to know whether it's an original production - admittedly blessed with samples from an old, Balearic-era groover - or a re-edit. Either way, there's something deliciously sun-kissed and saucer-eyed about the A-side title track, where synthesized horns, jangly acoustic guitars and an elastic dub disco groove provide plenty of thrills for those seeking White Isle disco flavours. The Idjut Boys style dub disco influences naturally come to the floor on the flipside "Noche (Dub)", which also boasts some languid flamenco guitars, fluid piano lines and rush-inducing electronics.

Review: Thanks to the hard-to-define nature of the Balearic sound that inspired it, Aficionado Recordings can pretty much release whatever they like - providing, of course, that it fits their hazy, horizontal and loved-up ethos. It's also why they can release this surprise EP from Welsh "super-group" Bendith, whose five tracks explore the more pastoral, string-drenched end of the folk spectrum. Via a range of tracks built around acoustic guitar motifs, lilting strings, twinkling piano lines and Welsh-language vocals, Bendith deliver an EP as breezy and beautiful as anything Aficionado has released to date. It's undeniably traditional in feel - there's not a synthesizer or drum machine in sight - but that only adds to its alluring nature.

Review: Unlike most dubbed with the "Scandolearic" tag, Farbror Resande Mac boasts impeccable Balearic credentials. This album for Full Pupp offshoot Horisontal Mambo follows impressive EPs for both Aficionado and Is It Balearic, and is made up almost entirely of the kind of softly spun, saucer-eyed fare created to soundtrack Ibizan sunsets and Adriatic sunrises. The beats largely shuffle and pulse, the guitar lines tumble down, the synthesizer melodies shuffle, and the chords wrap themselves around your consciousness like a favourite duvet. In other words, it's a superb collection of evocative, emotion-rich music for those who like their grooves sun-kissed and horizontal.

Review: Anyone who's ever run a record label will happily tell you how it's rare to find musical gold amongst the many demos speculatively submitted by up-and-coming producers. Imagine Claremont 56 boss Paul Murphy's surprise, then, when he received these superb cuts from previously unheralded German musician Ferdi Schuster. Naturally, he snapped them up straight away. A-side "Little River", in particular, is spectacularly good. Based around the sound of a babbling brook, sun-kissed acoustic guitar licks, vintage synthesizer solos and a languid, samba-inspired groove, it's a grade-A chunk of Balearic brilliance. While B-side "Befreit" doesn't quite reach these dizzying heights, it's still a wonderful trip into sunrise-friendly downtempo territory. As debut singles go, it's little less than stunning.

Sometime Claremont 56 artist Simon Peter kicks things off with the shuffling beats, dreamy chords and glistening guitars of "Ottimismo", before Document Swell man Simon Cotter reaches for the chiming synth melodies and bubbly drum machine beats on "Pianta Road". On the flip you'll find the Seahawks-meets-pitched-down-dream-house positivity of "Una Prueba De Amor" by Murena and the contemporary jazz beauty of B&B's standout "Read Me". Review: Last spotted causing a "Ramshackle Rumble" on Aficionado three years ago, Brenda B Ray returns with three more Balearic spellbinders... "Solartude" eases us in slowly with a limping, soft arpeggio that's shrouded in chimes and a growing orchestral warmth, "Space Dustin'" removes any traces of drum for an ambient sojourn into a night sky as the strings take a back seat for swooning moments of melted vocal harmonisation. "Skip Hop To Bop" closes on an upbeat note with a layered synths tease back and forth over roomy kicks and majestic beds of chimes. One of a kind.

Review: It's time to step onto the veranda... Just to the side of the heaving dancefloors Melbourne's Griffin James has been attracting for several years with his powerful deep house blends, it's a space for more consideration, introspection and levitation as we tether our feet to the ground and let his most experimental, freeform compositions whisk us beyond the stars. Ambient, wavey, tender, Balearic; this is Francis Inferno Orchestra beyond the decks and disco as tracks such as "Mer Morte" and "Potential Of We" lap gently at our toes, slowly consuming us from the feet up. Elsewhere molten machines such as "Allodynia" bubble and froth into cloud-bursting crescendos and the gradually rising, barbed chords of "The Sweetest Embrace" wash over you like an epiphany. Breath-taking and innovative, Francis Inferno Orchestra has burnt right through any difficult second album cliches right here.
