Skate This Way (5:27)
Second Time Around (3:20)
Hart Plaza (4:48)
Review: Andres' return with the second La Vida 12" reaffirmed our belief that there's no-one out there doing it quite like the former Slum Village DJ. Second Time Around has the same insouciant, dusty charm that characterised New For U, the first drop on the Detroit deity's La Vida imprint, with the title track instantly entering the canon of house classics that change the shape of a party as soon as the needle hits the groove. The shimmying beats and cooing vocal snippets on "Skate This Way" work alongside captivating string samples. Flip over for some eloquent beatdown ("Second Time Around") and shuffling deep house exotica ("Hart Plaza").

Don't Get Me Wrong
Shimmy
Don't Get Me Wrong (Tornado Wallace remix)
Review: Recloose on Delusions of Grandeur? Yes please! "Don't Get Me Wrong" is classic Matt Cicioine, packed full of his usual musicality and dense, melodic production. It sounds like an unlikely fusion of distant, long-forgotten disco and spine-tingling deep house, with more atmospheric vocal samples and live instruments than you can shake a smelly stick at. It's heady and intoxicating, coming on like a classic house production made somewhere between Detroit and New York. The driving "Shimmy" continues the murky, retro-futurist trend and is just as engaging. As if that wasn't enough, there's also a lovingly fluid, decidedly Balearic rework of the title track from Melbournite Tornado Wallace that's quite possibly the best thing he's done to date. Splendid!

Million Toes (long edit)

Panama's Break 2012
Million Toes (interlude)
Review: The latest transmission from Kolour Ltd is that bit more special, collating some choice out-of-print cuts that French producer Patchworks released on Parisian hub Q Tapes for this black splattered clear plate. Just one of numerous aliases adopted by Bruno Hovart, the inherent musicality of these Patchwork productions date almost a decade and really do show up a lot of what passes for contemporary "deep house". A long version of "Million Toes" - originally released in 2005 - opens proceedings, finely balancing Hovart's undoubted skill for jazz arrangements with a sumptuous deep house groove that seems perfectly suited to set opening needs (the piano flourishes are particularly luxurious). "Cornbread" from the aforementioned EP is also included here, while Kolour look to Hovart's undervalued work as Porks Watch, with the thickly hypnotic disco-flecked title track from his 2005 Minotaur EP the highlight of the B Side.

Andrew Ashong & Theo Parrish - "Flowers"
Andrew Ashong - "Take It Slow"
Andrew Ashong - "The Way She Moves" (short version)
Review: At first glance, the pairing of Forest Hill resident Andrew Ashong and Sound Signature boss Theo Parrish would seem strange. But the duo have worked together previously with the Ghanaian born vocalist (and supposed owner of a vinyl collection that would make most record shops look like a car boot sale) lending his soulful tones to Parrish's excellent nine minute plus translation of the Hot Chip and Spiritualised affiliated About Group. Whereas that collaboration was more about Ashong's voice being just one element of a production that was undoubtedly Parrish, the three tracks present on the Flowers EP look to showcase what a talent the Londoner is. Those trademark dust filled stacatto rhythms are present in the opening title track, but they never swamp Ashong's killer vocal delivery, while "Take It Slow" is bonafide D funk of the highest order. After the brutal, divisive nature of Theo's kung fu experimentalism on the Any Other Styles EP, these three tracks show him in a wholly new light and hopefully Parrish and Ashong will be making much more music together.

Techno Soul
Ambient Jaz One
Review: It's now been 20 years since Glenn "Underground" Crocker released his first 12" on Dance Mania. Since then, he's released a formidable amount of records (many more than we can count) and found his own niche as a producer of deep, soul-flecked music that sits somewhere between classic deep house and the more progressive end of US garage. This latest 12" is in many ways typical of his recent work. Both "Techno Soul" (a slightly misleading title, as it's really a slightly brighter, more electronic take on classic US deep house) and "Ambient Jaz One" (first released in 2005) are musically adventurous and vividly detailed, offering dancefloor thrills for those who like their house music cultured and stylish.

Black & Grey
Cult Under Skin
Review: New London label Contrast Wax launches in style (and highly limited fashion) with this two track Ink Theory EP from Spanish producer and DJ Ernie. No doubt named in honour of the Madrilenian's current obsession with tattoos, anyone familiar with the direction of Ernie's label Minuendo will have some preconception of what to expect - ever shifting deep house characterised by a soulful approach. This is very much in evidence on the highly melodic lead track "Black & Grey" which opens up into a wonderfully playful array of soft focus key patterns, high pitched chords, echo laden vocal samples and loud drum programming. Complementing this, "Cut Under Skin" is a ruffer drum track which still retains some glorious soaring melodics.

Vision Of Love
Keep Keep
Getcha Boi
Review: Bicep's ascent from a blog collective with obvious taste and passion for all forms of dance music into a fully fledged brand continues apace with the foundation of Feel My Bicep, a new label named in honour of their blog which promises to showcase their own growing production nous. Vision Of Love will probably go down as one of this year's most ubiquitous releases, given the advance clamour for its release and it's not hard to see why. Yes the three tracks here contain an obvious nod to the 90s New Jersey sound Bicep clearly adore, but there's a clear craft to their execution and the title track is massively infectious.

808 Signatures
Voices Of The World
Faces Revenge
Mental Samurai
Review: Returning to his fruitful Latin Soul Brothas venture, Ricardo Miranda once again reaches across the Atlantic from Chicago to Italy to collaborate with Neroli on this sturdy and varied four tracker. "808 Signatures" instantly stands out, working around a skippy groove that features more cowbell and rimshot than anything else from the fabled drum machine, while a looping synth creates a cheeky, left of centre feel. "Voices Of The World" is a more summery, piano-led jam with a Larry Heard flavour, and "Faces Revenge" pulls everything back for a slow but sturdy DJ tool. "Mental Samurai" cools everything off with another richly melodic jaunt through floating pads and gossamer beats.

See Through You
Review: With an excellent release on Tusk Wax in his armoury and a notable collaboration with Bicep on their recent Aus EP, Norn Irish lad Ejeca seems primed to follow the trajectory set by the aforementioned burger loving duo. The Horizons EP, his debut for the Needwant imprint sees Ejeca throwing down three tracks that are very much steeped in the same vocal lead New Jersey garage sound that Bicep are currently plundering to great effect, not least on the thickly infectious title track that demonstrates Ejeca's ease for crafting a killer breakdown. "Dazed" eschews the reliance on vocals for some deft chord usage and excellent drum programming, while "See Through You" shimmers with garage indebted warmth.

Got 2 B
Say I
Useless
Review: There's little if anything we can find fault with on Hybrid Minds, a triumphant debut on the Electric Minds imprint for the prolific, if latterly quiet, Move D. This EP proffers the sort of nuanced deep house you've come to expect from the German producer after countless well received releases across Workshop, Running Back, Underground Quality and his own Source Records. Many will instantly fall for the charms of "Got 2 B", a superbly fizzing concoction that fluidly grooves through several glorious movements including a brief organ motif that would be rapturously received at the Electric Minds warehouse parties. "Say I" proves to be just as infectious, the tight clomping drum arrangements complemented by a real sense of textural space and a instantly recognisable vocal loop, while "Useless" ends proceedings with a dewy eyed vocoder led slow jam of the highest order.

Groove Your World (Medlar remix)
Let Me Know
You Got My Time
Review: Having circled around in the digital realm for some time, Steven J finally touches down onto wax with a proper release of his own, bringing a freaky, bumping brand of deep house that stands apart from the glut of smoother styles being mined at present. "Groove Your World" boasts surreal pads that create an overall delirious vibe, only bolstered by the off-kilter choice of vocal snippets and occasional thunder cracks. Medlar's remix finds its way into that swinging shuffle that he's made his name on thus far, with some smooth keys to boot. "Let Me Know" works off some bold chords before meandering off in an altogether different direction, and "You Got My Time" clatters along with a quintessential Chicago ruffness that leans heavily on the drums.

New Stuff
Review: After the strength of their initial releases, the Never Learnt camp come up trumps again with the seductive tones of Christopher Rau. "Marbled World" struts forth in a decisive house manner, while a heartfelt violin plays out over the top of bluesy Detroit chords, and ""Loot" bumps and jacks with an old-skool flavour revolving around a metallic chord stab. Lerosa takes no prisoners on his box-bashing, arpeggio-heavy remix of "New Stuff", pumping it up to great effect, while the original unfurls in a filtered and warming, off-kilter kind of deep house that brims with ideas and charm.

Orange Love
Review: Continuing their quest to unearth deep house gems new and old, Vibes & Pepper introduce the world to Manuel Keyz with a killer four-track workout that makes all the classic moves. The strings and keys come in seductive, nocturnal arrangements, while the snippets of vocal come from true soul divas, all atop of bumping garage house funk. The tune that stands out to our ears is "Orange Love", replete with sexy saxophone fit for Lil Louis and dreamy key flourishes that give a considered and wistful tone to the track, but really there's plenty to work with on all four corners of this EP.

Fx Mchn - "Jackie"
Jamie Blanco - "I Think She Thinks"
Facade - "Revelations"
Review: The newly established London Housing Trust label inaugurate proceedings with a various artists 12" featuring contributions from Cynic artist Jamie Blanco alongside the previously unheralded Alphonse, Fx Mchn and Facade. It's unclear who the latter are but inside info suggests it's three well known artists operating incognito, but don't let this wilful obscurism put you off as each track here is optimum analogue house at its finest. The Fx Mchn contribution "Jackie" is particularly beguiling, touching on jagged punk funk as much as late 80s house with echo laden vocals smudged deep beneath a delightfully rubbery bass line and buccaneering, malfunctioning drums for six minutes. A promising debut from the label!

BLM - "Shepherd's Bush Steppaz"
Moodtrap - "04.01"
Moonrunners - "House In The Ghetto"
Review: Tsuba's recently established vinyl-only offshoot Tsuba Limited continues to flourish, with BLM, Moodtrap and Moon Runners helming the Nite Trax EP, the ninth issue and the first Various Artists effort in the imprint's history to date. Long term adherents of Tsuba output will be familiar with the potent brand of deepness that BLM can knock out, and the excellently titled "Shepherd's Bush Steppaz" is a fine example, expertly weaving together the breathy vocal and woozy soft focus loop over a tightly wound groove. Complementing this, shadowy London pair Moodtrap continue to explore the classicist house tropes on "04.01" and Moonrunners operate in a similarly bumping groove for "House In The Ghetto".

For Those who Choose Not To Mix (interlude)
Review: There's been a fair amount of hype about this first EP on Sleazy Beats new Black Ops offshoot, and it's not hard to see why. From perennial deep house fave Frank Brooker, it offers up a variety of quality deep house flavours, all with just the faintest hint of loose-limbed disco-funk. Check, for example, the hustling electro pianos and clipped guitars of "Out West", or the cut glass strings and dense percussion of "Credit"; both take deep house/disco fusion in a breezy new direction. Best of all, though, is the beatdown-goes-deep soul vibes of "The Sun", which is every bit as gorgeous as you'd expect.

No Look Back (5:22)
Review: Keith Worthy's Aesthetic Audio imprint is always a trusted stable for refined deep house excursions, and France's Life Recorder is a logical addition to the ranks with his delicate, shimmering cuts that positively overflow with nutritious melodies. "Keep Maintain" slyly works some forthright drums into the mix, almost unnoticed for the the narcoleptic pads to intoning a message of ultimate peace. "No Look Back" equally stands out for its sturdy rhythms carefully masked behind winsome daubs of synthesised expression, but it's that hypnotic tone that informs Aesthetic Audio releases and it's found at every turn on this record.

BLM - "My Sound Tool"
Flori - "Red Rectangle"
James Johnston - "Lights Off"
Review: Since launching at the tail end of 2011, the Black Key label has proved itself to be a solid destination for those seeking high-grade deep house. Here, they showcase the work of a trio of 'friends of the family'. BLM opens proceedings with "My Sound Tool", a fluid chunk of eyes-wide-shut deepness containing just the right amount of bump. James Johnston's "Lights Off" is typical of his recent atmospheric outings, and matches the loose fluidity of BLM's opener. Best of all, though, is Flori's "Red Rectangle", a Larry Heard-ish chunk of classic Chicago deepness with just a hint of classic analogue shuffle.
