If You Want My Love (3:59)
Get Down With The Get Down (3:23)
Review: Pure boogaloo gold: Melvin's rich repertoire is loaded with gems, but his collaborative fusions with Jimmy Scott on his fifth album Melvin Sparks '75 are some of the most distinctive and unique. "If You Want My Love" was way ahead of its time with its staccato synth hits and textures buried deep behind the emphatic vocal power and almost hip-hop style groove. Flip for "Get Down With The Get Down" that builds and builds and builds with such ease and natural rhythm there's a strong chance you'll get lost inside it every time. Search party not included.

Review: There are few certified music stars that France's Wally Badarou hasn't worked with along his illustrious career. Black Uhuru, Grace Jones and Herbie Hancock are just some of the names he's collaborated with, but the man only got to that stage thanks to his wonderful solo albums of the early '80s. His very first LP, the much-coveted Back To Scales To-Night, is a sublime boogie-soul gem and it's thanks to the collaboration between Expansion and Love Vinyl that we have it on our shelves once again. The title track is an instant hit of euphoria upon first listen, and its sonic treatment which rendered it stand-out back in the day... and still today! "One Day Won't Give It Away" is another favourite of ours, a drum-machine soul groover, but the instrumental version of "London Town" is also a reason to cop this magnetic, and refreshing soul album.

Can You Dig It (3:28)
Suddenly You're My Life (3:35)
Review: Another, rare as hen's teeth, soul reissue from the Tramp crew! Teakwood's only release dates back to 1976 and, as you can imagine, it pretty much ticks all the boxes off the soul checklist - most probably because of the lovely, dusty percussive swing and strangely disjointed groove of "Can You Dig It". "Suddenly You're In My Life" is one for the lovers, a fast-paced, anthem-like soul stepper backed by a more jazzy swing that captures the essence of the jazz-funk golden era.

I Try (4:26)
Forbidden Love (4:27)
Review: Since 2003, Rachel Modest has been a fleeting presence. We're not happy about that. The soul vocalist has only sung over a handful of EPs, including one on Phil Weeks' Robsoul Recordings, and this new single is really her first solo appearance. Thanks to the young ATA label, we are graced with the majestic tones of "I Try", a powerful soul ballad that instantly cuts to the core and leaves you yearning for more. On the B-side, "Forbidden Love" is similarly seductive in its approach, but this time Modest's tactic is smoother, more contained and sexier. Whichever side you prefer, we think both are fantastic, and that this EP is a true gem among the contemporary soul releases. TIP!

Review: Chicago's Pastor T.L. Barrett has been known for more than four decades as an activist and pastor and for a certain scandal in the late '80s but most of all for gospel records "Like A Ship...(Without A Sail)" as well as this very album that gets a much needed reissue on the Gospel Roots label who have also brought us the likes of Roscoe Robinson and The Dixie Hummingbirds. Originally recorded at the Mount Zion Baptist Church of Universal Awareness, "Do Not Pass Me By" and seen on Miami's TK Disco offshoot. As a press release describes best it "is a real Gospel beauty and features eight tracks of resplendent hands in the air rejoicement." The album comes with the original sleeve artwork and design.

Take You Home (feat Joss Stone) (3:42)
Fires Glow (feat Emma Noble) (3:47)
Review: You might say that Adam Gibbons is a fairly regular name, and you'd be right. This particular A.Gibbons has another side to him, though, one where he makes all sorts of crazy tunes under the moniker Lack Of Afro. Since the mid 00s, he's been releasing may variations of funk, soul and disco; the man is never afraid of a e new challenge and loves the vintage sounds of the 60s and 70s. This new two-tracker on the party-ready LOA is magnificent in its entirety; "Take You Home" is a lovely, soul-tastic pop tune guided by the imposing voice of Joss Stone, while Emma Noble delivers a deeper, more laid-back sort of wisdom on Gibbons' "Fires Glow". Lovely stuff.

Am I A Good Man (3:06)
Love Has Taken Wings (2:43)
Review: It would be fair to say that Miami's Deep City Records is not one of soul music's best-known imprints. It only ever released a handful of records in the mid-to-late '60s, though many of these have gone on to be considered as obscure, Southern soul classics. Them Two's "Am I A Good Man", here reissued for the first time since its' initial release, is undoubtedly one of the label's finest moments. Written and arranged by Clarence Reid, it's an impassioned, heartfelt chunk of soul-searching full of sustained organ chords, walking bass, sublime backing vocals and distinctive drum work. Lesser-known B-side "Love Has Taken Wings" - a more straightforward soul shuffler backed with luscious orchestration - is almost as good.

Nothin' Left 2 Do (4:39)
Didn't We Almost Make It (4:53)
Review: What a crazy trip it's been for The Coalitions. After a run of success in the mid 70s and an album that was produced but never released in the early 80s, the Philly band finally got the justice they deserved in 2011 as Soul Junction unearthed their work and finally released their album 30 years later. Now the band are back with a brand new song. "Nothin' Left 2 Do" is rooted in classic Al Green style soul but with big flourishes of 80s instrumentation and even 90s R&B vocal croons. "Didn't We Almost Make It" takes us back to 1979 as their instantly distinctive album opener enjoys life on 45 for the very first time. They made it.

Pullin' On My Heartstrings (4:02)
Love At Hello (2:22)
Hit & Run (3:55)
Review: Dala Records' latest outing pairs up producer Billy The Kid with the label's in house studio band, The Soulful Saints. The results are predictably impressive. There's something particularly sweet about the off-kilter blue-eyed soul of "Pullin' On My Heartstrings", which sits somewhere between purist lo-fi soul and Harry Nilsson style psychedelic dream-pop. The latter influence is explored further on inspired flipside cut "Love at Hello", which is so authentic sounding that it could easily have been made at Abbey Road studios in 1968, during an acid-fuelled recording session. The Allen Toussaint-inspired punch of "Hit & Run" - all fuzzy Ska horns, wild solos and dusty production - completes a superb E.P.

Exclusively Yours (2:51)
After Loving You (3:33)
Review: For a brief spell in the 1970s, Gordon Grody looked like he might become a genuine blue-eyed soul sensation. While he never quite had the success he arguably deserved, his 1977 debut album Exclusively Yours remains something of an overlooked classic. The two tracks featured on this tasty Expansions 7" are both taken from that set, and see him adding his impassioned, honeyed vocals to backing tracks that sit somewhere between Philly soul and New York disco. Of the two, it's the punchy, floor-friendly "Exclusively Yours" that's our pick, though the more sugary, sumptuous flipside, "After Loving You" is almost as good.

Review: If you're already aware of intergalactic soul messenger Kadhja's skill, prowess and allure then you'll already have this one ordered. If not, welcome to a new universe of folk. Delivered with a strong sense of late 60s psychedelia and a delicate firmness similar to that of Joni Mitchell or Kate Wolf, there's a stark nakedness between the elements creating an honest, timeless and traditional experience that is exquisitely balanced. This is her largest body of work to date and has been kept under tight wraps with only a handful of tracks revealed in the run up. We won't spoil the surprise - press play and meet the talent the world needs (but probably doesn't deserve) right now.

Review: Legendary neo-soul man Maxwell tends to take his time over albums. He recently released the acclaimed blackSUMMERS'night, a belated follow-up to 2009's BLACKsummers'night (which originally appeared eight years after his previous full-length). Here, the latter gets a timely reissue on Legacy Vinyl. It remains a fine set, with Maxwell's brilliant vocals - occasionally fragile and heartfelt, sometimes bolder and breezier, and always dripping in soul - perfectly complimenting his backing band's warm, rich and evocative soul grooves. Highlights include the horn-heavy punch of "Bad Habits", the bustling, hip-hop soul beats, rising instrumentation and belted out vocals of "Help Somebody", and the grandiose ballad, "Fistful of Tears".
