  1. Ultraviolet (original)
  2. Ultraviolet (part 2)
Review: Given the inflated prices being charged online for original copies of Lord of The Isles' 2011 breakthrough release, Ultraviolet, it's nice to see Adult Contemporary giving it the reissue treatment. In hindsight, Neil McDonald's original version - a hybrid of Italo-influenced nu-disco and Balearic deep house - contains many of his now familiar trademarks; think intoxicating melodies, immersive production and an innate ability to tease maximum emotion from a dancefloor-focused groove. Flip to the B for something of a surprise treat: a previously unreleased rework from McDonald that takes the track more towards dreamy deep house territory - whist retaining the disco shuffle of the original - via cascading synthesizer melodies and heady vocal samples.

  1. The Greatest Part Of Loving
  2. Fun
Review: Straight out of the early '80s, "The Greatest Part Of Loving" was penned and produced by Adell Shavers and Was Not Was's David McMurray. A silky piece of contemporary Detroit boogie, "The Greatest Part Of Loving" was criminally serviced and never felt the spotlight it deserved; until now that is thanks to The Athens Of The North crew. Backed up with the fittingly titled stomping disco funk cut "Fun", this limited 7" covers both sides of the dance with the attention to detail and care we've come to expect from AOTN.

  1. Radio Rap (vocal)
  2. Radio Rap (instrumental)
Review: Radio Band's "Radio Rap" - the one and only single by a group of DJs from the Radio Fantasy pirate station - has long been an in-demand gem with Italo-disco diggers and Balearic heads alike. With original copies both hard to find and expensive (currently hovering around the L60 mark online), it's great to see Archeo Recordings giving the 1984 cut a much-needed reissue on heavyweight vinyl. The quirky vocal version - a loose and funky disco-rap record with additional boogie synths and all Italian vocals - is accompanied by the superb instrumental version, which perfectly showcases Danilo Ciarchi's superb production.

Review: The result of a diligent digging quest since he heard DJ Klas drop it many years ago, Lyonaisse editor Waxist has finally track down his own copy of Lamar's 1980 disco soul love gem and given it some serious treatment. Extending the unfettered positivity of the original by almost two minutes (with special attention paid to that immense organ solo), it lives up to its name in every possible way. For authenticity's sake he's also included the original B-side "Take Me To New York". Still standing the test of time impeccably after 35 years, one tickle from the lolloping bassline and swooning keys and your dancefloor will be hooked.

  3. Le Cod
Review: The KM Editions series, admirably helmed by the mysterious Keyboard Masher, has always been one of the more interesting re-edit/rework labels. Past installments have touched on krautrock, disco, Balearica, funk, Italo and what can only be described as electronic oddities. This sixth volume offers up three more impressively remixed, overdubbed and re-edited gems. There's naturally much to admire, not least the OMD style woozy synth-pop of "Stolen Shapes (Stealing Rework)", which should tickle the fancy of anyone of a Balearic disposition. The same can be said about the immersive, sun-kissed pianos and shuffling grooves of "Astral Playground". There's also a chunk of silly - but, perversely, rather good - French cod-reggae in the shape of "Le Cod", arguably our pick of a strong bunch.

Review: Disco Meze is the latest platter served up by Sleazy McQueen's evergreen Whiskey Disco operation, and it's a various artists affair with contributions from Vinyladdicted, Jean Claude Gavri, Pixelated, Alkalino, and The Silver Rider. It's Vinyladdicted and Seaside Edits don Gavri who are first up with a lovingly filtered exercise in peak time disco with "NYM" - just wait for that synth solo to burst out!! Up next, Pixelated goes deep into the disco with the fine "Caught Up In The Rapture" which is pretty much an endless tease, whilst "Day To Day" from Alkalino could easily be laid over a bumping DJ tool. The Silver Rider's effort, "Hidden Rung", will appeal to fans of the Whitney tweak Genius of Time did a few years back.

  4. Alternative Obsession
Review: With the Bizarre Feeling EP laying the sound for the subsequent fist year of the label, it is right Jamie returns with EP#2 to move things forward with another twisted take on his unique mutoid-protoid-machine-funk-groove. Starting with Mad Obsession you would be forgiven for thinking you'll have Bizarre Feeling Part 2, with warped vocals - taken from late night, half asleep scribbled notes - and space echo haze, but let the percussion work-out trip you up and the stars in and before you know it things start going leftfild and then deeper with the Free Party Sound System bass line shuffl of Time Nearly Time. What he is on (about), no one knows. It is on the flp however that things take a darker turn. Beyond the confession booth, down sharp stairs and dripping ceiling to a red light lit room of latter day late night blues.

Review: Moon B's next mini-LP offering to PPU, entitled III, is a varied affair. The a side offers up the older taped track "Realms", a semi-muted yet chuggy number for the dance floor overwrought with moon-roasted synth progressions that coat the ears. "Neither Here Nor Where" is an ode to forgotten spaces and places, wrapped tightly in synth bazz and creamed pads that emanate from Moon's favorite synth, the Alpha Juno 1. Flip the record to find Moon's most "instro-spective" offerings to date. "Art Direction" bottomed out tempo conjures up images of 1984 Prince replacing Appalonia with Inga Copeland as his motorcycle passenger after a neon lit love-making session. "Moonda"'s slow fluctuation and linn drum echoes paired with sorrowful yet hopeful chords attempts to warm you in the coldest of polar vortices. "Polywarp" rounds out the affair with syruppy vacillating instrumentation paired with unforeseen wobbly bits and foreign percussive hits. -

Review: US crate-diggers Cultures of Soul are swiftly becoming masters of left-of-centre disco compilations, with their Caribbean and Indian disco retrospectives (Tropical Disco Hustle and Bombay Disco) being amongst the stand-out collections of 2014. Here they change tack again, offering a double-vinyl showcase of Brazilian disco, boogie and jazz-funk. While there are a few "must-haves" here (Marcos Valle's celebrated "Estrelar", for starters), the real joy of The Brazilian Boogie Connection comes from the less well-known material. Check out, for example, the horn-toting disco-funk breeziness of Banda Black Rio's "Expresso Madureira", Emilio Santiago's "O Amigo De Nova York" or Tarantulas' brilliant re-imagining of Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough".

Review: For the latest edition of the intriguing Dessert Islands Discs re-edit series, the label has called upon the well-renowned scalpel talents of German-in-Amsterdam Marcel Vogel, AKA Em Vee. The Double Denim-sporting eccentric drops another gem in the shape of "White Heat Shake It Out (Edit)", a bouncy and seductive disco chop-job that makes great use of the source material's bustling groove and steamy, spoken word vocals. On the flip, lesser-known re-edit heads Papi Del Pancake and Claude Von Reefer take up the challenge. Their "Gimme What You Got" has a little more deep house shuffle, but retains the key instrumentation and feel of a sumptuous disco-soul jam.

Review: Eddie C invites Fake Glasses and The Noodleman to straddle his crimson two-wheeler for two deep dub disco delights: The former gets his treacle-like squelch on as he flexes around a short vocal hook and sweet skank, using chubby acid as a means of melodic bass dynamic. The latter goes deeper again with warm kick, a sheet metal snare and a low-end flow that's so thick it's almost toxic. Limited and hand-stamped, this is nothing short of stunning.

  4. Alright (3:29)
Review: Long-standing French funk veteran Vas delivers another deep disco dispatch... "Wizard Funk" lives up to its name with a ballsy, almost dubby stomp and a bassline so juicy it could grow flowers in the desert. "Cream" dims the lights, dips the tempo and slowly strips off every musical garment to reveal a slinky, naked bassline. "The Moment" is subverted repurpose of Inner Life's Salsoul standard "Moment Of My Life" where the groove and backing vocals hog the spotlight. Ending on a sweet, skanky high, Vas brings this show to an end with a beautiful rework of Keith Hudson & Family Man's "I'm Alright". Sporting a new coat of drums and a tripped out synth lines, it's an instant soul soother... And a great way to end an awesomely broad EP.

  1. Leisure Suit Preben (I Cube remix)
  2. Preben Goes To Acapulco (Prins Thomas remix)
Review: In some ways, the "Preben" suite of tracks from Terje's It's Album Time LP is a strange choice for remixing. That said, the two original tracks both featured plenty of live instrumentation and spiraling synth solos amongst their nu disco-meets-easy listening and library jazz-funk grooves, making them attractive to remixers. As a result, these two reworks are unsurprisingly different to the source material. Parisian veteran I:Cube does a superb job on "Leisure Suit Preben", turning the tongue-in-cheek original into a string-drenched chunk of immersive Balearic house. Terje's old pal Prins Thomas sticks closer to the original vibe of "Preben Goes To Acapulco", turning in a breezy chunk of Arp-laden jazz-funk blessed with his usual organic, bass-heavy grooves.

Review: Concentrated Nigerian disco from 1980: I.G's only album Bomp fetches triple figures without so much as a second thought. Listen to these two limited, loud-pressed album highlights and you'll understand why. Galvanised by I.G's distinctive falsetto, "Disco Power" pays homage to the sound of New York while retaining a tight sense of Afro rhythm and highlife sparkled guitars. "Funk Ina Ghetto" is equally alluring. With I.G taking a more spoken word approach, it comes on strong like a Donny Hathaway joint - all dramatic and dynamic. Powerful.

To get things started, "XK" drops a heavy artillery of funky samples on to a badass slap-bass, while "Highdisco" verges onto Sound Stream territories thanks to its broken, juicy groove, and "Good Almond"is basically a high-tempo disco number for the modern age. Review: Madrid's Synth Alien returns with a fresh EP out on Cyber Dance Records entitled 'Stellar Walker' that shows off his spaced-out and italofied influences in just the manner we've now come to expect from that label - slow-motion chugging synth workouts that are rich in atmosphere, confident in pace and arrangement and most importantly jam-packed with heavy riffing and piercing melodies from start to finish. Side A of the EP opens with "Come With Me", a dreamy and spacey slow-but-hard rocker that warms the ears up nicely before the second track "Hotel Chameleon" seals the deal with epic feeling and soaring melodic lines that break into an all-out synthesised feast of a climax. Side B continues with a collaboration with Moscow's Dmitry Distant 'L'Amour Est Parti', a romantically-tinged odyssey of relentless octave basslines that reaches even higher into new realms of future funk courtesy of a guest vocal from AKA INK before the EP closes with a monster of upfront determined electronic rocking called 'Smoke Comet', ending the record with a fitting cosmic crunch.

  2. Keep Believing (Can You Feel It) (Al Kent remix)
Review: On this 12" Al Kent strips the original disco masterpieces down to their bare bones, letting the splendour of Betrami and Verocai's arrangements really shine through. Al Kent's edit of 'Disco Supreme' is a fantastically drawn out 13-minute builder - deconstructing the original and piecing it back together within the framework of his signature (very) punchy drum sound. Betrami's beautiful Rhodes float amongst Verocai's soaring strings and at one point, these are the only sounds to be heard (it's possibly the most beautiful thing ever!), before the song kicks back in in all its Brazilian disco glory. The b-side 'Keep Believing' is a slightly slower and heavier (yet just as club focused) groove. Its foundation is Alex Malheiros of Azymuth's funk bassline woven tightly with Al Kent's phased drums. Triumphant disco in the style of Tom Moulton and Walter Gibbons, 'Keep Believing', like the a-side, features a full orchestra and revisits the authenticity and glamorous hedonism of the late 70s scene.

In fact, the resultant album is something of a triumph, with a range of well-regarded modern disco and boogie producers delivering some superbly sympathetic remixes. Here, four of the strongest highlights from the album - including john Morales' epic re-rub of "Just An Illusion" (here in edited form) and Kon's wonderfully positive, musically rich reinterpretation of "Flashback" - are released on vinyl for the first time.
