Rain (8:24)
Review: Al Kent is the kind of experienced producer with a midas touch who can pull off the single-track, single-sided 12" and not leave anyone doubting the value of the wax. On this occasion the Million Dollar Disco man is getting busy with 'Rain', working an iconic, evergreen vocal performance over a beautifully extended, joyous and passionate eight minutes of soul stirring disco perfection. This is party music at its most fierce and flamboyant, not to mention with the kind of illustrious musicality other genres just can't touch.

Hot Chocolate - "Heavens In The Backseat Of My Cadillac" (The Revenge edit) (7:22)
Gwen McRae - "Keep The Fire Burning" (The Revenge edit) (7:42)
Review: For Discos Only sources the finest underground edits and mixes for the discotheques and is proudly a bootleg free zone. The Revenge's now legendary resplice of the Hot Chocolate classic "Heaven's In The Back Seat Of My Cadillac" streamlined the low-slung groove of the original in impressive fashion, which rocked underground dancefloors over the better part of 2010 and beyond. Over on the flip is another respectful edit of a golden oldie, this time in the form of Gwen McCrae's anthemic disco inferno "Keep The Fire Burning". Finally pressed on vinyl back in 2018, this much welcome reissue will be in high demand, don't sleep on this!

Don't Stop Your Love (6:42)
Get Down On It (5:23)
Hold On Your Dreams (4:55)
Money Wonder (4:11)
Keep Alive This Fire (6:00)
Review: Four years after his last album-length excursion, Periodica Records founder Dario de Pace fires up his Mystic Jungle project for another voyage into disco/boogie/jazz-funk/cosmic fusion. Deviant Disco could well be his most accessible, dancefloor-focused release to date. Opening number 'Don't Stop Your Love' is a cowbell-sporting slab of squelchy synth-boogie, while the track that follows, 'Get Down On It', joins the dots between electrofunk, Chic and the proto-house sounds of Paul Simpson. Over on the flip, 'Hold On To Your Dreams' is a hazy drift through Balearic AOR territory, 'Money Wonder' is a dubbed-out Afro-cosmic disco shuffler and 'Keep Alive This Fire' is a wonly Italo-disco throb-job. In a word: superb!

I Remember Mama (5:16)
Sound Design (5:30)
I Remember Mama (NAD Discomix) (11:00)
Review: "Emotional Rescue presents the first ever reissue of Sugar Minott's rare 12" of I Remember Mama. Recorded in Soho in mid-80s London, the Boogie meets Reggae song comes in vocal and instrumental mixes, as well as a wonderfully teasing long Discomix by NAD aka Dan Tyler (Idjut Boys).

Having grown up and become a star out of Kingston, JA, with over 50 albums and hundreds of singles for the likes of Studio One and Black Roots labels, the legendary vocalist was a pioneer of the Dancehall and then later Lovers Rock sounds.

Based in London for much of the 1980s, a chance meeting in the Wackies offices he met producer Steve Parr, who had recently opened the Sound Design Studio next door.

Hatching the idea to create a label to showcase their capabilities, Parr played all the instruments except the distinctive sax by friend Andy MacDonald, while Minott's delivery is at his prime, storytelling in the Jamaica tradition of hardship and praise.

Released on 7" and 12", they have striking differences. The "Sound Design" instrumental / version sees the studio team craft a disco meets reggae in a cod-style to wonderful, almost Balearic effect.

The collaboration with Dan Tyler continues, as he again works his desk dubbing magic. Extending and editing between the two mixes, teasing the instrumental before finally bringing the sax and vocals together for a 'discodub' finale. "

MFSB - "Love Is The Message" (feat The Three Degrees - Mike Maurro remix) (11:07)
The O'Jays - "Message In Our Music" (Mike Maurro remix) (11:10)
Review: Disco mixer Mike Muarro has been delivering tasteful, multi-track remixes of disco and soul classics for the last couple of years, and earlier in 2021 delivered a digital-only set of revisions of classic cuts from the Philadelphia International catalogue. This must-check 12" contains two of the most potent reworks from that set. On the A-side you'll find his epic, beautifully executed revision of MFSB's brilliant 'Love is the Message', which features rearranged elements and Tom Moulton style builds, drop outs and instrument solos. He takes a similar approach on the flip, wringing maximum energy and release from the O'Jays 'Message In Our Music' without adding any unnecessary instrumentation. If you're a fan of the Rephlex and Moplen's multi-track revisions, you'll love both remixes.

I Hear Music In The Streets (Touch mix) (10:45)
I Hear Music In The Streets (Expansions NYC dub) (4:49)
I Hear Music In The Streets (LV Classic Boogie mix) (6:33)
Review: Anyone with even the smallest interest in disco and boogie will have heard Unlimited Touch's 1980 classic 'I Hear Music In The Streets'. It's a stone-cold killer that should be approached with caution. Louie Vega, of course, is respectful, and these versions are not remixes but rather re-makes, with the Masters at Work man being joined in the studio by all manner of guest musicians and vocalists - including original members of Unlimited Touch. The standout version is the near 11-minute A-side 'Touch Mix', an all-live post-disco version rich in classic disco bass, guitars, electric piano keys and spacey chords. The short-ish 'NYC Expansions Dub' cans the vocals and emphasises the various instrument solos, while the 'LV Classic Boogie Mix' is an almost note-for-note remake of the 1980 original.

Changes (Dimitri From Paris Is Nightdubbin' remix) (7:52)
Review: There are few synth-boogie records better than Imagination's 1982 club smash 'Changes', an impeccable chunk of soul-fired dancefloor brilliance rich in undulating synth-bass, mazy high-register solos, echo-laden piano riffs, warming chords and superb lead vocals from the effervescent Leee John. This reissue not only boasts the peerless Larry Levan remix - the finest version of the tune by far, and subtly dubby in the Paradise Garage legend's typical style - and the dub style Instrumental mix, but also Dimitri From Paris's impressive, stretched-out revision that first featured on the 2009 BBE compilation Night Dubbin. Basically, this 12" boasts all the versions you need of one of Imagination's greatest moments; should you not own them already, you really should pick up a copy.

Emancipacao (Ron Trent remix) (9:15)
Emancipacao (extended mix) (7:47)
50 Anos Em 5 (extended mix) (7:07)
Review: Diego Strausz's first outing on Razor N Tape, a seven-inch single released in January 2021, was a thrillingly vibrant and hard-to-pigeonhole affair, with the Brazilian joining the dots between Batacuda, Brazilian disco, boogie and deep jazz-funk. This belated follow-up features superb, never-before-heard extended versions of those two tracks: the Azymuth-esque drums-synths-and-percussion explosion that is 'Emancipacao' and '50 Anos Em 5', a TB-303 acid-sporting slab of Latin jazz-fusion with bonus spacey synths. Perhaps the package's most notable moment though is Ron Trent's inspired remix of the title track, which in typical fashion sees the legendary deep house producer add extra layers of musicality, sun-kissed positivity and plenty of killer house-not-house beats.

Love Shock (6:15)
We're Truckin' (6:15)
Catch Me If You Can (6:40)
Review: According to the mildly amusing back story that accompanies this debut release from the Wrekin' Havoc crew, the crew of crate diggers turned re-editors behind the series make their wares in a cave in deepest wales, armed with just a computer and a pile of Balearic-minded wax. Whatever the real story, there's plenty to savour on their first outing. Opener 'Oh La Lover' is a tasteful tweak of an obscure, slap bass-sporting, mid-tempo French disco number from the early '80s, while 'Love Shock' breathes new life into an electrofunk era slab of Gallic rap/synth-pop fusion. On the reverse, the cave dwellers first play around with a boogie-era, drum machine-propelled cosmic disco number ('We're Truckin'), before delivering a saucer-eyed delight in the shape of the luscious 'Catch Me If You Can'.

Big Time (7:10)
Review: Bona-fide disco don and edit king Mr K offers up a sixth volume of his own edit series. As always this is golden ear disco tackle that brims with musical vitality. First comes 'What You Don't Know' which channels plenty of high speed 60s funk, with big horn stabs leading the way and busy drumming keeping those feet tapping. 'Big Time' is more freaky and playful. The toms flutter over a twisted bassline, vocals are steamy and sleazy disco loops add further fuel to this fiery dance floor filler.

Organ Fett (6:14)
Review: Brooklyn's Toucan Sounds collabs with Mexico City's Super Spicy Records to drop the 'Beginning' EP from Drop Out Orchestra & Monsieur Van Pratt. Leading the release is floor filler 'Glitter', which gets the party started with brightly mixed horns, saxophone flair and deep bass licks, before moving into 'Feel Great', with New York R&B artist Shareef Keyes' vocals sitting atop an effortlessly grooving and sparkling production. Pink Flamingo Rhythm Revue's baritone sparks joy in 'Get Busy', sliding into higher registers in the chorus over a crystal clear funk backdrop. For the final track on the EP, 'Organ Fett' drops the vocals for earworm synth leads, organs, and guitar hooks, conjuring images of palm trees and orange sunsets. Drop Out Orchestra rose to prominence in 2008 with a seemingly endless arsenal of bootlegs, re-edits, and covers. Now teaming up with Mexican DJ Monsieur Van Pratt for their first collaboration.

Review: The West End label out of New York City is one of the most legendary when it comes to disco of the 70s and 80s. It was home to all the finest producers of the day from Raw Silk to Barbara Mason to Peech Boys, who appeared on this one with Brenda Taylor in 1982. First up is a Michael Gray & Dr Packer remix of 'You Can't Have Your Cake & Eat It Too' that is all stiff synth stabs and chunky disco funk, then the same pair remix the tiles 'Don't Make Me Wait' into something a little more groove driven and funky than the darker original.

Review: LUXXURY (born Blake Robin) is the LA Beatmaker who really comes correct on this new EP on Nolita Records. It features four of his freshest tunes to date and if the title is anything to go by it could be the start of a fine new series. Things start all sensuous on 'Let's Stay Together' before the stylish cosmic disco Rhdoes and smooth grooves of 'Don't Give Up (I Believe In You)' and breezy, hip swing charms of 'Pleasure' make a great impression. 'Two Hearts' rides on nice languid bass riffs and last of all comes the upbeat, piano laced and hands in the air jam, 'Hold On (Crackazat remix).'

I Need Somebody To Love Tonight (4:07)
Review: Sylvester has too many hits to count, but 'Over And Over' has to be up there. Originally released in 1977, the timeless slice of uptempo disco funk was a mighty meeting of minds - any track penned by Ashford & Simpson is set for iconic status, and with Sylvester up front it's even more of a sure thing. Quite simply eternal. Of course, Sylvester's most famous collaborator was Patrick Cowley, whose magic touch is all over the wriggling, brooding synth boogie of 'I Need Somebody To Love Tonight', presented here as a compact 7" edit for a short sharp blast of perfection.

Hit It N Quit It (Cratebug & Jamie 3:26 edit remix) (7:33)
Review: Chicago stalwarts Cratebug and Jamie 3:26 were relatively little-known when they joined forces to create this killer rework of Loleatta Holloway's Salsoul classic "Hit 'N' Run" way back in 2011. The interpretation, which laces choice passages of Holloway's impassioned vocal over a loopy and driving house groove reminiscent of Paperclip People's "Throw", first appeared on vinyl as part of Lumberjacks In Hell's now impossible-to-find Chicago Service compilation four years ago. Happily, Salsoul has decided to reissue it on this must-have, single-sided 12". It's more of a remix than a re-edit, and is guaranteed to get things going at peak-time. Basically, it's a banger, and you need it in your box.

Review: A stone cold classic, nothing else to say. A must for any disco aficionado, Kenton Nix's one and only production as Kenix Music featuring Bobby Youngblood 'There's Never Been' (No One Like You) on West End from 1980 receives a much needed repress here. Nix started out quite late in his career at the age of 25, but through his friend Larry Levan he got a record deal at West End Records where he wrote Taana Gardner's 'Heartbeat' and Ednah Holt's 'Serious, Sirius Space Party' and later went on to produce Gwen McCrae's 'Funky Sensation'.

Review: Intrepid sonic explorers Kraak & Smaak return with another new album to add to their already fantastic catalogue. Scirocco is named after a warm desert wind and the sounds inside the record certainly have an exotic feel. There are psyched out funk rollers like the opener 'The Cypress Garden' and 'Sunflower Suite' before the title track featuring Fred Nevche pairs French spoken world with balmy chords and rolling grooves. 'French Shuffle' is a shorter instrumental funk workout and 'Cut De Sac' brings the lounge vibes. Review: James Greenwood's Semi-Skimmed Edits series is not the most prolific around, but the material the talented scalpel fiend does release is always top-notch. After a sole 12" in each of the last two years, he returns to action with another highly impressive two-track missive. A-side 'Real Hot' sees him expertly rearrange and rework a funk-fuelled disco-funk number laden with cut-glass strings, punchy horns, groovy bass, great breakdowns, even better percussive sections and warming AOR disco vocals. Over on the flip, 'Find You' is a slightly jazzier and more musically detailed chunk of expansive, loved-up disco in which harmony backing vocals rise above more superb orchestration, floor-friendly grooves and virtuoso musicianship.

Review: Not all dusty obscurities are worth revisiting, but library music ensemble Gruppo Sound's 1987 set Dreams For Sax most definitely is. Rooted in mid-80s jazz-funk, 'pages from Ceefax' easy listening, glossy electrofunk and early '80s disco, it's a genuinely joyous collection of jaunty instrumental workouts that should delight Balearic crate diggers, sample-hunting beat-makers and synth-loving disco heads. Given the title, you'll be unsurprised to find that saxophone features prominently, but it never dominates; in fact, the range of virtuoso piano solos and the loved-up nature of the Gruppo Sound's approach makes much more of a lasting impression.

Review: There are few more celebrated edit kings than Late Nite Tuff. Now he is back once again with the goodness, this time tackling killer racks by First Choice and Double Exposure. All of the source material here is considered to be stone cold classic, so he's brave if nothing else. But of course, he also has the skills to make these edits worth your while - he extends the breaks, lets the grooves roll on and ensures the vocals remain in place to really get hearts sweeping and hands in the air. The unabashed funk, soul and disco joy of his take on Double Exposure's "Everyman" might be the standout here.

Review: Arthur Russell made many fine records during his all-to-brief lifetime, though few are quite as fun, funky and freewheeling as 1980's 'Is It All Over My Face', the first single from his Loose Joints project with Steve D'Acquisto. Originally released at the tail end of the disco era and heavily influenced by the no-wave and punk-funk scene in downtown NYC, the track delivers a fittingly loose-limbed take on disco laden with attractive instrument solos, percussion-laden dancefloor breakdowns and vocals that are alternately inspired and unruly. This reissue boasts both of the original 12" mixes: the much-loved, funk-fuelled 'Female Version' and the raw and raucous 'Male Version', where Russell and D'Acquisto share lead vocals.

The resultant 12" contains some of his most interesting re-edits yet, with Elado cunningly opting for eccentric and oddball source material. 'Deepy Mango' sounds like a cross between proto-house, post-punk synth-pop and Kwaito - and that's a great thing in our book - while 'Space Lokum' is a throbbing revision of what sounds like a North African electro-disco obscurity (an Arab take on the Giorgio Moroder sound, basically).
