It's Got Me
Minutes Of Funk
Review: 3024's pilfering of West Country talent continues unabated with the rather busy of late Julio Bashmore being swiftly followed by the equally prolific Addison Groove in releasing essential club tackle for Martyn's imprint. Anyone who has indulged in Mr T Williams' recent output for Swamp81 or Tectonic will have an inkling of the current Addison Groove sonic flex, all tightly wound post circa 130bpm 808 patterns, though "It's Got Me" is truly characterised by the disparate sensation of woozy melodic flourishes being diced by the rhythmic swagger. Flipside you get future funk electro odyssey of "Minutes Of Funk" with swathes of purple textures allowed to breath beneath a perma bouncy bass thrust. The midway drop into a bumping house pattern will grab you every time!

Babeh
Satisfied
Review: As he waves goodbye to his most illustrious alias, Hessle Audio's David Kennedy is offered the chance to fully embrace another! Posited as forgotten hero of Chicago House - check the affiliated Twitter account for some amusing caps heavy rants - Maurice Donovan was first unleashed via a remix of Julio Bashmore earlier this year. He gets now centre stage on Hemlock offshoot SSSSS to fully indulge his love of the classic Chicago sound with two jams that naturally look forward as well as back. Donovan flexes his 808 skills on the stripped down tease of A Side "Babeh" with the ever present titular refrain cannoning around the subterranean beneath the satisfying rhythmic undulations. "Satisfied" is a looser, sexier joint characterised by breathy female vocals and a slightly deranged organ sample. Perhaps the best thing about this twelve however is the deliciously retro cover design!

Where You Should Be (original mix)
Where You Should Be (Shy FX remix)
Review: Tempa drop another single from Skream's 2010 all conquering Outside The Box album in the shape of the awesome "Where You Should Be". Whilst the track features the vocal talents of Sam Frank, they are so heavily subjected to vocoder that his lyrics meld into the spiralling array of keyboard hooks and twilight tinged arpeggiated synth lines - with suitably woozy results. On the flip Digital Soundboy boss and all round legend Shy FX drops a killer remix which starts with the Mtume "Juicy" riddim before switching to more familiar rolling junglist pressure ably assisted by some sweet additional female vocals. Watch out for that half time drop! Also look out for a second all remix twelve with a suitably heavyweight line up.

Better Off In Me (original mix)
Better Off In Me (Calibre remix)
Review: Irrelevant presents his debut single on fledgling London imprint Kokeshi - introducing a sound that fits snugly alongside the current genre benders that muddy the borders between, techno, dubstep and electronica. "Better Off In Me" sees Irrelevant drown the vocal talents of the distinctly named Brad Sucks in a pensive, subaqueous soundscape propelled along by clanking metallic rhythms. It's easily the sort of thing Jamie Woon or Burial and a vocalist could be responsible for, and might possibly cross over into wider recognition. Soul:R don Calibre adds some weight with a B Side remix that retains the creeping aqua rhythms but implements a haunting 2 step vibe brilliantly.

Shawty
Shawty (FaltyDL remix)
Review: 502 Recordings finally drop this one! Teeth is the alias of Finnish producer Matti Pentikainen, who has dabbled in everything from abstract hip-hop as Ceebrolistics to dub techno as Mi Ni Ma. Currently ruling the dubstep scene in Helsinki via the club night Alas his Katusea crew run, "Shawty" is a truly auspicious debut- having caught the ear of Sound Pellegrino boss Teki Latex who quite accurately described it as 'northern light-induced-clap-trap-house'. Distinguished by a sultry female vocal, frosted synths and beat programming that shuffles between dubstep, juke and dirty south hip-hop, "Shawty" is yet another hit for Oneman's fledgling label. Adding yet more reason to indulge is the flipside remix from Falty DL which adds more urgency to proceedings via scattergun 2-step riddims, affected vocals and jagged bass flourishes.

Further
Time Out
Review: Lazer Sword don Lando Kal steps out for a solo endeavour on the always crucial Hot Flush imprint and it's a bit special. "Further" takes a US garage swing and twists it round a swathe of cavernous twilight hypnagogics coated in frosted atmospherics - ably assisted by the emotive twinge of the heavily diced titular vocal refrain. The distinctive melding of transatlantic references bodes well for future solo output from LK. Check the B Side for the more urgent juke throb of "Time Out", which swerves brilliantly through several different directions as it descends uneasily towards the run out groove. More please sir!

Benga - "Transformers"
Kutz - "Shake It"
Review: Oi Benga! "Transformers" is a bit rowdy! Dutch label Oi! Recordings launch their vinyl arm with a statement of intent, securing the Magnetic Man's preferred set ender. You can keep your wet blanket post dubstep with pitch shifted R&B chanteuse vocal samples, "Transformers" is all about the WMD levels of bass menace that run through the post apocalyptic half step rattle - in the Croydon don's own words it sounds horrible when he plays it out! On the flip, fellow Londoner Kutz steps up to the challenge with the equal screw face thump of "Shake It". Nice work Oi Recs.

Wish U Were Here
Here 4 U
Ain't Gonna Lie
Review: Excellent release here from Deadboy on Glaswegian imprint Numbers, who returns to the imprint after dropping their first ever 12" in early 2010. The Brighton based producer serves up epic A-Side jam "Wish U Were Here", which locks into a 4/4 pulse with euphoric Virgo-style synths and a deftly tweaked vocal snippet - solid end of night tackle right here! On the flip you'll find "Here 4 U" and "Ain't Gonna Lie", with the former's rolling congas and snare patterns complemented by the latter's syrupy vocals, pinball percussion and straight up garage rhythms. Serious heat once again from the Numbers crew.

Everytime
Asteroid Belts
Review: Punch Drunk score another winner, finally unleashing Andy Mac's "Everytime" - a track which has become a secret weapon for the Bristol bass cognoscenti. There's a soulful tint to the track courtesy of the deep 2-step bass flourishes and that mournful vocal, though it's offset by some brilliantly snapping beat programming - a truly auspicious debut from the young Bristolian which can quite easily fit alongside any number of different styles! The flip is just as good too, with "Asteroid Belts" delivering the best dirt filled Martian house rhythm this side of a Maurice Fulton production. A fine release from all involved.

Badman Place (Coki Digital Mystikz remix)
Badman Place (Coki Digital Mystikz dub mix)
Review: Hot on the heels of Diplo's excellent Riddimentary compilation, the iconic Greensleeves presents this crucial sound clash between dancehall and dubstep. "Badman Place" Busy Signal's anthemic raggacentric collaboration with Mavado is lifted to a whole other level by Digital Mystikz lynchpin Coki - discarding with the string heavy digi dancehall flex entirely! In it's place Coki lays down a menacing future dubscape, with typical sub bass flourishes wiggling out beneath the crunching half step riddim. No disrespect to the original version, but the urgent tones of Busy and Mavado seem perfectly suited to this music! There's a dub version too if you wanna admire Coki's production swagger!

Boxcutter vs Kab Driver - "Little Smoke"
Ufonik (feat Brian Greene)
Review: Perhaps the most exciting thing about Barry Lynn's work as Boxcutter is its improbable brilliance. A lot of his musical combinations, sideways steps and inventive fusions shouldn't work, yet by and large, they do and then some. The Dissolve, his fourth full-length for Planet Mu, is full to bursting with such crazed, unlikely genius magical blends of star-gazing boogie, two-step, wobbly rave, blissful electronica, nudisco, dub, breaks, jazz, slo-mo grooves, Balearica and god knows what else. On paper, it looks a mess, but it sounds great. It's melodic, memorable even monumental. He's a serious talent, all right.
