Instra:Mental - "Pyramid"
Trevino - "Chip"
Review: On this 12", Martyn's 3024 imprint delivers its first split single, containing two tracks apparently too good to wait for individual releases. On the A-Side Instra:mental deliver "Pyramid", a typically throbbing number from the duo that sounds more like a meeting of the pair's respective solo monikers as Boddika and Jon Convex, with the deep bass oscillations of the former melded with the weirdness of the latter to create a furiously paced techno roller. On the B-Side Trevino delivers "Chip", which combines a glitchy garage rhythm with a dark EBM bass arpeggio and sinister chords to recreate the warehouse sound of Sheffield circa 1990 by way of a chiptune rave.

Last Forever
Heaven Sent
Review: It's been at least a hot minute since the last heavyweight release from Swamp 81 dropped (and they don't get much heavier than a double pack of body music from Boddika). The wait has totally been worth it as Funkbias sees UKG legend Zed Bias team up with Rinse FM's excellently named Funk Butcher for two drops of typically forward thinking music. "Last Forever" burst uneasily out of the rumbling groove that opens the track into masterful concoction of vocal affectations, burning synth beams, snapping tribal drums and trademark Zed Bias bass. "Heaven Sent" does indeed begin like it was sent from above with gentle piano melodies lulling you in before being engulfed by a heavily pressurised flex of 808s and more crafty vocal dicing. The interplay between the soft and harsh elements is quite brilliant. Those who like a fine example of cover art will go weak at the knees over the Will Bankhead embossed design too.

Radar
Vacuum States
Review: Having announced his new Jon Convex endeavour with two slices of formidable futurism for Martyn's 3024 imprint, Damon Kirkham returns to the familiarity of Non Plus with a double clutch of equally essential productions. Fans of cult TV might recognise the snatch of Badalamenti strings that announce "Radar" in such ominous fashion, though it's they way this element is weaved amidst ever groaning insect like bass and murderous strains of dystopian acid that truly impresses. And of course the brittle click clack of drums that always threatens to smash to pieces. In contrast, "Vacuum States" offers a more optimistic slant on the sci fi electro poise, gradually letting loose a succession of kaleidoscopic synth flutters over the stripped down kick thrust and glooping bass.

Speeding Blue
Neon
The Lick
Be Myself
Review: Cementing their rep as the busiest cats in electronic music, Modeselektor maintain the 50 Weapons pressure with a quartet of drops from Dark Sky. There have been waves of expectation surrounding the London based trio since they surfaced on the excellent Pictures Music label last year, and the Radius EP shows they can match the hype with aplomb. "Speeding Blue" is vintage 50 Weapons material, devious chords progressing at 45 degrees around expertly layered drum kicks, dropping into heavenly washes at all the right moments. Staying true to its title "Neon" essentially works as a battle of wits between luminescent melodics and a tightly wound marriage of keys, shuffling hi-hats and insistent bass dips whilst fractured shards of vocals add a yearning quality. On the flip "The Lick" continues this interplay between dark and light elements with basement level sub bass contrasting with the glacial vocal coos that flicker beneath a tinned can of tropical fruit 808 flex - that bassline! "Be Myself" rounds off proceedings with what is best described as The Neptunes arising on Swamp81. Pure class.

Bones (Joe remix)
Bones (Rockwell remix)
Review: The lesser spotted Hemlock offshoot known simply as SSSSS drops its third and purportedly final emission with little to no warning, and we can expect it to last as long at the Juno warehouse as the previous effort from David Kennedy's forgotten Chicago House hero alter ego Maurice Donovan. The conceptual slant sees a return to the debut SSSSS drop, with an Untold classic getting the relick treatment, this time being the Shackleton-like 2008 thrill of "Bones". This means the remix from Hessle's Joe FINALLY gets the release it deserves (no more listening to Youtube rips!) and it is joined on the flip by a typically precise and skeletally poised effort from D&B badman Rockwell. The killer artwork from Abi Heyneke just adds another layer of class to this twelve.

Love Pressure (XI remix)
Love Pressure (FaltyDL remix)
Every Day Of My Life (Jimmy Edgar remix)
Down (Daedelus remix)
Review: Known individually as Praveen Sharma and Travis Stewart, AKA Braille and Machinedrum, Sepalcure have become known for their own sublime take on dubstep, garage and broken beat. Now their debut Hotflush release gets the remix treatment from four big names. The A-Side sees XI take the broken vocal samples of "Love Pressure" and combine them with his own devastating production skills, with the huge bassline complementing the melodic qualities perfectly. FaltyDL meanwhile delivers another exceptional remix, with a warmth that matches anything on his recent album whilst combining with manic juke-inspired rhythms. On the B-Side Jimmy Edgar slows it down with his remix of "Every Day Of My Life", adding some serious low end to the airy original, and turning it funky. Finally Daedalus takes the completely insane option, chopping up the structure of the track, adding crazed piano stabs and jungle breakbeats to the sedate original.

And She Said
Review: LuckyMe present another invitation into the world of Lunice, with One Hunned offering a more concise, bolder vision of what the Montreal based beat miner offered on his debut solo endeavour Stacker Upper last year. Opening with "Glow", Lunice essentially demonstrates his new found confidence at chopping drums amidst a choir of heavenly vocal harmonies and illustrious synth bombast. Alongside it "I See U" and is pure club tackle and a notable highlight, snapping through cavernous vocal stabs and shotgun snapping drums before introducing a Godzilla sized buzz synth thrusting with drunken glee. Elsewhere tracks such as "Bricks" and "Juice" immediately make you want to see Lunice live so you can fully appreciate the dextrous MPC manipulation that clearly went into its inception.

The Calling
Review: One of dubstep's oldest heads, Cyrus is welcomed back into the Deep Medi Musik fold with a double drop of forward thinking dubstep. Whilst there's an inherent sense of unease and tension that runs throughout the spacious "Visions" via the creeping sonics that pervade the lower echelons, it's more than offset by the deftly crafted swing that you can't help but dip your shoulders to. "The Calling" expertly rolls out its rhythmic intent, keeping you waiting before the stuttering half step takes effect amidst a devilishly dubbed bed of sound. A restrained air remains throughout, whilst the subtle percussive touches which sound like two samurais duelling keep you hooked.

Someone (The Prototypes remix)
Someone (Rockwell remix)
Review: More commonly seen behind the decks in a club as opposed to twiddling knobs in the studio, "Someone" from Shogun Audio head honcho Friction has turned many a head (including, bizarrely, Fearne Cotton's). This remix EP sees contributions from The Prototypes and Rockwell, with the former rising South Coast duo serving up a half step infused effort that comes across as a rougher variant on DJ Fresh's chart chopping endeavours. In contrast Rockwell lays the focus on the emotive potential of those vocals, pitched down, scratched up and placed amidst a restrained arrangement dipped in fuzzy atmospherics and diced up syncopation.
