Hotline (3:25)
Come Over (3:16)
Hit Diff (2:13)
Blame (2:35)
Review: By now, we should all be familiar with Ghost Phone's unique formula, namely chopped, screwed, twisted and re-imagined R&B workouts provided by a never-named crew of mystery producers. The Bristol based imprint has moved the goalposts once more on volume five, first fusing grime and dub techno and the pleasingly stoned and weighty 'Hotline', before opting for more extensive vocals, glassy-eyed chords and bustling beats on 'Come Over'. 'Hit Diff' raises the bar further by combining jungle breaks and the forthright attitude of ghetto-tech, while 'Blame' is a deliciously warming, loved-up slab of hazy R&B brilliance. If there's a more inventive and inspired rework series out there, we've yet to find it.

Sunken (4:22)
Review: The Banshee EP was one of the last musical projects the pair of Glume and Phossa worked on together in Bristol before they left the city to live elsewhere. Lead single 'Banshee' has been played for years on the circuit and always got great reactions, so the pair sat down to write three more tunes to go with it for the sake of this EP. That was during lockdown so they haven't been road tested yet but rest assured when they are, the club will erupt. Each one hits deep, with trippy synth motifs from the Orient on 'Jitter', warrior energy on 'Vessel' and more broken beats on 'Sunken.'

The Terrible (5:05)
Review: Deep Medi murkers Kaiju return to Mala's label with another bulldozer EP - 'Troll'. The title track sets the tone and mood with its raw, curmudgeonly mid 2000s style groove. Elsewhere 'Counter It' looks more towards the club sound with its rifle-like kicks weaving a steppy storm beneath the tense, oppressive atmospheres before 'The Terrible' closes the EP with some incredibly unique and stark bass textures. DO feed the troll.

7th Seal (4:38)
Dance Of Obsidian (4:25)
Review: Zahabi make a fine debut on Lion Charge Records here on a limited edition, hand-stamped 10". This one is designed to pumped out loud in soot-black basements. It's full of grit and late night menace, lurching bass and smoky atmosphere that get you lost in sound and compelled by the rhythm. '7th Seal' is the heavier of the two with dread vocals and plenty of cavernous space to allow everything to really resonate. 'Dance Of Obsidian' then brings stark dub chord stabs, watery sounds and rib-rattling bass.

Hail Jah (4:17)
Evilman (4:27)
Review: The Dubbing Sun collective hails from Austria. It has appeared on a broad range of contemporary labels, helping to drive the deep dubstep scene forwards in recent years. Their sounds now come on this lush orange marbled 10 inch vinyl and as ever is seriously heavy. Opener 'Hail Jah' has some spiritual pads and lots of wide open space for the wispy leads to drift through. The bass and drums have plenty of wobble and sci-fi effects finish it in futurist style. 'Evilman' is more dread-fulled and dark, with stepping drums leaning into the shadows.

Spliff Dub (Sukh Knight remix) (5:34)
Review: Major league reissue business as enigmatic Hyperdub alumni Zomby returns to his early work and brings it back to the future on a series of Warehouse Rave revisits. For 'Spliff Dub' it's all about that classic Billy Boyo sample that Zomby flipped in swaggering style back in 2008 and for good measure he's brought in the massive Sukh Knight remix that arguably became even bigger than the original with its big organs and even bigger basslines. Massiveness... And there's more to come. Keep the evil away.

Never Listen (4:39)
Review: Biome's at the top of his game with this new EP on Deep, Dark & Dangerous, which is the label's first of the year. It's a masterclass in dark dubstep wizardry that is expertly put together across four compelling tunes. Opener 'The Joker' is a haunting tune with a whispered vocal and cavernous grooves. The icy hits are to die for and the low end wobble is irresistible. 'Boxed' then gets heavy with more crashing hits and fizzing, dystopian synths. There is plenty of weight in 'Monster' and its poised drums and big drops and last of all 'Never Listen' is a fine example of tension and release that keeps you locked.

Review: AJ Tracey famously announced the release of his sophomore set, Flu Game, with a fake press conference in which he took on the role of a star basketball player. There's a reason for that - Tracey claims to have drawn influence from the story of Michael Jordan and his legendary Chicago Bulls side of the 1990s - though some reviewers have questioned the relevance of the concept to the album itself. Putting that to one side, Flu Game is a very good album indeed: a contender for the grime album of the year with Tracey spitting thoughtful and hard-hitting rhymes atop punchy grime beats and hot-stepping UK garage grooves. To our ears it's a step up from his self-titled 2019 debut album and in time will be regarded as a genuine grime classic.

Rub A Thug (4:06)
Polarised (4:25)
Review: Parisian producer Ourman has been touted as one to watch many times over the last few years, with plaudits arriving for his numerous low-key, largely digital-only releases. According to our research, this outing on White Peach is his first vinyl missive - something of a landmark for the up-and-coming Frenchman. There's much to admire throughout, with Ourman combining warm, deep, sometimes punishing sub-bass and crunchy post-dubstep drum rhythms with a variety of breezy, ear-pleasing melodies and instrumental flourishes. The best of the bunch is probably the exotic title track, 'Windy', which rushes along at a notable pace and boasts what sounds like Amazonian instrumentation (but most likely isn't), though the sparkling and deep 'Rub A Thug' and skittish 'Polarised' are also top-notch.

Review: The second chapter of Sentry's compilation series furthers the notoriety of its lauded artist congregation, welcoming plenty of fresh faces to the revered artist roster. A four-track vinyl sampler, Syndicate Part 2 takes (as the label best said themselves) 'bass music enthusiasts for an extensive and stylistically varied ride'. KALI & Senncoria take dubstep into world music realms on 'Dragon Shape', LSN bring UK bass music forward on the urban grit of 'Shotta Kush', Substance teams up with label head honcho Youngsta on the blunted late night grime experiment 'Nug', and on what was probably our favourite track on here, Cimm presents a unique take on dub techno with the cavernous and glacial 'Glider'.

Review: Last month rising star Ourman popped up on White Peach with his first solo vinyl outing. Here he returns to the very same imprint with another quality collection of heady twists on grime and dubstep. He combines deep, low-slung dubstep grooves with creepy melodies and intoxicating electronics on 'Namarie', before making great use of Arabic instrument samples on the more skittish and up-tempo 'Meknes'. Over on the flip, sweet and melodious deep dubstep number 'Sinning' is joined by 'Vulgar', a darker and more paranoid chunk of slow-swinging grime wobbliness. All four cuts are naturally blessed with serious bass-weight and a smoky atmosphere.

Review: Following his soundtrack to the Roki game and appearances on the likes of Monstercat, Aether returns to his spiritual home Fent Plates for the first time since 2017. The wait has of course been worth it as 'Fragments' takes us back to the Scottish deepsmith's finest elements; stirring, poignant chords, foggy, disarming textures long lingering-but-tender notes. From the opening airy pads and trembling keys of 'Luna Awaits' to the final slo-mo plod and echo of the finale 'Worlds Apart', it's Aether doing what he does best; conjuring up emotions you didn't even know you were feeling while making you feel like you're in an impenetrable bubble. Beautiful.

Stomping, yet remarkably deep and meditative, 'Monkey Brainz' will hypnotise you into submission with its blunted style of sonar transmissions. Tense, creepy and just the right level of theatre, this one hits with serious weight. Six tracks over two 12"s, there's a real measured pace and sense of tension running across the collection as we gradually build up to the pensive, fierce and well-chiselled title track. Review: Italian vocalist Marina P is the guest on this new 12", and she brings something different than anyone who knows her work might expect. On the brand new single from the forthcoming Radikal Guru album 'Beyond The Borders', she offers a soulful and human counterpart to the shiny metallic drums and urban dubstep bass all around her. Review: Last year Sir Hiss (real name Jeff Emmott) was catapulted into the limelight via his most high-profile 12" yet - a fine EP of 140 BPM dancefloor mutations on K-Lone's Wych imprint. Here the Bristol-based producer returns to his own label for the first time in two years with three more weighty chunks of atmospheric post-dubstep pressure. He begins with 'Wot', a sub-powered, off-kilter monster laden with crunchy snares, tough kick-drums, mangled musical motifs and just the right amount of head wobbling effects. 'Na Di Mi Na' is even creepier and moodier, with crackly spoken word samples, plucked harp melodies and horror soundtrack textures wrapping around a more punchy and upbeat dubstep rhythm, while 'Schmetterling' is a quietly jazzy chunk of cinematic trip-hop with a 21st century twist.
