Empire State Of Mind (4:38)
99 Problems (3:58)
Review: Lil Static Records has a reputation for delivering light touch rubs of classic hip-hop jams. The basic idea is to slightly beef up and tweak much-loved hip-hop faves while also making them slightly more DJ-friendly. That appears to be the case with their latest "45", which reps two stone cold classics from Mr Beyonce himself, Jay-Z. On the A-side you'll find a fine - if very similar - version of Alicia Keys hook-up 'Empire State of Mind', a colossal hit from the tail end of the last decade. Over on the flip the mysterious crew subtly tweaks Black Album favourite '99 Problems', in the process making a fuzzy, percussive classic even more scuzzy and low-slung.

Work The Angles (4:01)
Worst Comes To Worst (3:12)
Review: The 45 Kings are back with more of that boombap goodness that we hip hop heads can never get enough of. This time they have unearthed two previously unavailable tunes from Dilated Peoples on this today 7". There is a timelessness to 'Work The Angles' that makes it immediately easy to love: those dusty drum breaks, the DJ scratches, the gnarly riffs. On the reverse, 'Worst Comes To Worst' slips into a deeper, more reflective vibe with romantic melodic motifs and a rolling beat that you hope never ends. These are two gens that very much need to be heard.

Livin Proof (4:12)
Supastar (4:15)
Review: Jamal Felder aka Melachi The Nutcracker and James Heath aka Lil' Dap are a duo from New York City who first appeared in the hip hop world as guests on Gang Starr's 'Daily Operation' and 'Hard To Earn' albums. They went on to put out six well received albums and work with the legendary DJ Premier on production. These two tunes come from their debut record and were two of the best. 'Livin Proof' has the edgy synth sounds, the deep and dusty beats and deft scratching which are all pure 90s but still resonate. On the reverse, 'Supastar' is a more party starting feel good jam with plenty of atmosphere and catchy hooks.

Review: DJ Format has long been a master of cut-and-paste production, most frequently crafting barnstorming funk and hip-hop fuelled club cuts made almost entirely out of samples lifted from dusty old records. He's applied the same techniques on Devil's Workshop, his new instrumental album, but this time he's opted for a stranger selection of source material and an undeniably cinematic feel. While calling it "DJ Shadow's Endtroducing for the 21st century" would be a bit of a stretch, the producer's combination of eccentric musical snippets (you'll find elements repurposed from folk, psychedelic, jazz, rock, spoken word, easy listening, Mod and weird soundtrack records), low-slung basslines and head-nodding hip-hop beats is certainly in the same sonic ballpark. As a result, it's Format's most detailed, considered and impressive work to date.

Review: Longtime hip-hop mainstays People Under The Stairs have a wealth fo great material but their 2002 album O.S.T. is one fo their best. It now finally gets a long overdue reissue after the group disbanded in 2019, a full 25 years after first hooking up and making a name with their inventive styles. This third record furthered their sample heavy sound and gave rise to one of their best known and most loved hits, 'Acid Raindrops.' Elsewhere the languid beats flow freely as the verses and the whole thing was produced in Thes One's home by him and pattern in rhymes, Double K.

Review: The Wrath of God was the 10 album by American rap superstar Busta Rhymes and it came out digitally in October of 2020. Now making its way to wax, the record is a sequel to 1998's E.L.E. (Extinction Level Event): The Final World Front, and has been received warmly by fans and critics alike. Guess such as Chris Rock, Pete Rock and Rakim, Ol' Dirty Bastard from beyond the grave and Rich Ross as well as Anderson .Paak all add weight but none detract from the main man himself as his spits in fine flow over raw and rugged beats.

Review: Like many musicians, Brockhampton spent much of 2020 recording new material, premiering plenty of it on their various social media channels. Despite this deluge of material, there was much more that they were holding back, and it's those tracks that make up their sixth studio set, Roadrunner: New Light New Machine. It was produced by a wide variety of contributors (including the RZA and Rick Rubin) and sees Kevin Abstract and his self-styled "hip-hop boy band" colleagues add their usual attractive mixture of rap verses and harmonic, R&B style choruses to largely sparse but tough backing tracks rich in crunchy machine drums and deep, booming basslines.

Lip Balm (2:25)
Vicinity (2:49)
Flow (2:48)
Review: This is probably the best tune we have heard about lip balm this week. Josie Patterson is the artist behind the Jozy alias an here works with producer Mori Mori. The title track is tantalisingly short, but in the two and a half minutes she serves up a soulful vocal - and her own backing - over glistening neo-soul production. 'Vicinity' showcases Patterson ability to articulate well written lyrics quickly and concisely over a slow boom bap, then 'Flow' finds her delivering the most raw and honest vocal, It's melancholic, filled with heart ache, but also a sense of strength and power that makes a real impact. We can't wait to hear more already.

Review: The Hip Dozer Compilation Vol 5 is a magnificent double LP that lands six years after the label was first born. It was started as a way of showcasing a wealth of old school beat makers who were still filled with creative ways of laying down red hot joints. That tradition continues here as the label brings on board some of their favourite new talents such as Burrito Brown, Loland, Imagiro and standard bearers like Jinsang, Saib and Flofilz while the icing on the cake here is the appearance of French hip hop legend DJ Cam. All in all they make for quite the ride.

Review: Grammy nominated producer Salaam Rem is a legendary artist whose latest solo album is another essential one. He uses the record to reflect on his own perspective of what it means to be black in 2021. It features some high class collaborative guests such as Nas, Busta Rhymes, Jennifer Hudson, Super Cat and Common as well as spoken word snippets from figures like Malcom X. As fierce as the message often is, the music is soulful and uplifting. There are neo-soul beats like 'Home Vacation', slow jazz jams like 'Strange Fruit' and classic boom-bap era jams like 'Yonder.'
