Review: 'Raven' is the name of the largest species of crow in the corvid family of birds. It's also the name of the second upcoming studio album by Kelela, which comes a whopping six years after her debut Take Me Apart - making this a hotly-awaited LP to say the least. Describing the album as an expression of loneliness as a black femme working in the dance music industry, she's made sure to bring along plenty of company, making this a largely collaborative affair. You've got Kaytranada, LSDXOXO, AceMo and Fauzia on there, all working in ultra-glossy, emotive future takes on dancehall, breakbeat and ballad.

That's What I Want (2:25)
Review: Kiss Klassics is keeping all you party DJs supplied with the best tackle once more here as this time they spotlight a trio of standout tracks from Montero Lamar Hill aka Lil Nas X's debut LP. Montero came back in 2021 and these cuts haven't been available on wax before now. There is the celebratory pomp and hefty distorted low end of 'Industry Baby' as well as the more deep sounds of 'Montero' with its strings, finger clicks and Afro-tinged beats, then the high-speed party pomp of 'That's What I Want' with its epic chorus and summer festival feel.

Childrens Story (Brassploitation edit) (4:50)
Wu Short Brings The Rhythm (3:54)
Review: Slick Rick is the legendary lyricist and hip-hop pin-up behind the original version of 'Children's Story' and it is, if you ask us, one of his greatest tunes. Not only is the narrative engaging, but the delivery is effortlessly cool, and the beats below are super catchy and bouncy. DJ Bacon tweaks and edits it here with a Brassploitation edit that adds extra wind power. On the flip is the more edgy and dark soul sound of 'Wu Short Brings The Rhythm' which has menace as well as killer breaks.

Aiming for a sound that both broadens his horizons and gives his fans a little uplift, Malone's contribution to the global tidal wave of pandemic-rooted LPs features Roddy Ricch, Doja Cat, Fleet Foxes, the Kid Laroi and the Weeknd. Digging into his confessional approach and teasing the possibilities of a pop-minded rap record on lead singles 'One Right Now', 'Cooped Up' and 'I Like You (A Happier Song)', Post Malone continues to evolve as an artist, leaving unique and compelling albums such as this one in his wake.

Review: Spacek is the all too often overlooked group from Steve Spacek circa the turn of the millennium, which was right on the money at the most interesting edge of neo soul. Tucked away in the annals of this group was a single carrying a next level remix from Jay Dilla which of course become a highly prized item for those in the know. All Right Fresh are clearly amongst those who know what's up, and they've gotten hold of the rights and pressed the remix up on 7" in both vocal and instrumental versions, sounding tight as ever and sure to become just as treasured as the OG pressings from way back when.

Review: The Pharcyde are like a rap group from bizarro-world, known to the public for decades thanks to their cheeky lyricism and light-footed beats and rhymes, as well as the occaisional out of this world video. First out in 1992, Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde smells distinctly of Los Angeles - this was the period in which Cypress Hill also emerged - indulging in vinyl-textured beats and speakerphoney lyrics, almost mocking the sounds of contemporary artists like the Beastie Boys or De La Soul from a 'realer' perspective. The production on this classic album is cheerful, audiophilic and advanced, portraying a freak ride in their purpose-built rap theme park.

Review: Lil Yachty's latest album 'Let's Start Here' has been hailed by some as a prog rock opus, bleeding his synthetic hip-hop / electronic influences into the dreamy and beat-switchy ambition of the 80s' rock musician. While sounding somewhat electronic, Yachty claims it to be "all live instrumentation", aiming for a curveball hit. The album hints at subjects such as mental health, conspiracies and failed romance, and its bold addition of Yachty's signature autotune furthers the idea that this is a boldly brash fusion project, exploring a range of emotions not usually explored by contemporary rappers.

Review: In God We Trust is the second album from East Cost hip-hop group Brand Nubian. Industrial and boomy - the warring kind of hip-hop one might expect to hear blasted from a makeshift soundsystem at an insurrectionary revolution - the album, following their debut 'One For All' in 1993, hears the best creative synergies of its members Grand Puba, Sadat X, and Lord Jamar. Equating god to money is a core principle of irony at the root of much rap, and here it's on full display; 'Meaning Of The 5%' and 'Black Star Lines' are among the highlights in this vein, with lines such as "black man, change your demeanour" and "the gods must be crazy," highlighting the rightful suspicion towards Mammonism in the black consciousness of the US.

Review: Naughty By Nature's third album sees the pop-laced act dabbling in gangster rap/horrorcore imagery - one of its members is quite literally holding a chainsaw on the front cover - Naughty By Nature's 'Naughty III' was first released in 1993, in the fallout of their earliest breakout single 'O.P.P'. Now approaching its 30th Annversary, this reissue from Tommy Boy urges us to cast our minds back to early 1990s New Jersey, when Treach, Kay Gee and Vin Rock were at peak naughty, extorting Spike Lee into directing some of their music videos, not to mention laying down menacing, wicked and rousing verses on the likes of 'Uptown Anthem', '19 Naughty III' and 'Sleepin' On Jersey'.

Review: The Gamm label you might know as a relabel source of disco, jazz and Latin edits. But did you know that it originally started out in the hip hop world? Well a new series of releases this year has taken it back into its roots. This third one features two top Wipe The Needle remixes. The lazy swagger and jazz-rap styles of Street Smartz's 'Metal Thing' takes you deep into a world of pillow kicks and starry-eyed chords from the golden era. Big L's 'Put It On' has slightly more crisp boom-bap but still plenty of cosmic melodies as well as smooth bars.

Review: The second studio album by Kelela is now out, coming a whopping six years after her debut Take Me Apart. Whereas beforehand we were hardly clued in as to its sonic and lyrical content, this deluxe 2xLP version provides us a full illumination. Whoppingly beautiful neo-soul vocals from the resident Big Dada/Warp artist glide across contemporary electronic dance production from collaborators from AceMo to Fauzia, making this a thorough testimonial of black women's experience in today's music world. 'Happy Ending' is the standout, skilfully weaving a heated picture of a complex, breakeat-backed love on the dancefloor.

Her (4:45)
Review: Japanese producer Shin-Ski turns his considerable skill to a pair of next level jazzy remixes of rap classics. First up is 'We' which has classic sunny chords and walking basslines overlaid with some fresh hip-hop bars and filled in with lush melodic curlicues and strings. 'Her' is deeper, with sax lines this time accompanying some classic melodic refrains and dusty bars. This, we're told, is a one time only pressing in limited quantities so if you want it, do not sleep.

Review: Beatitudes is an album of ten instrumental hip-hop tracks inspired by 20th century gospel recordings. Produced by one J Rocc (known as the acclaimed DJ and turntablist for Madlib's many shows), the album is a departure from the artist's smudgier, beatsmith affairs. Each track is as smooth as a baby's forehead, and/or as pleasing as a wild fig dropped into one's mouth by an attentive servant on a hot Verona day. Gospel samples whirl around like ghosts, haunting each beat, which in turn sound wonkier than an array of unoiled see-saws. The album's cover is an homage to the mysterious cult artist known only as Harvey, known for designing many surrealist-religious gospel album covers from the 1960s onwards.

Review: Brooklyn's Your Old Droog has made a name for himself with fine releases on the likes of Nature Sounds, many of which have had fans reminiscing about the fine mic work of the late great MF Doom. He uses artful imagery and unlikely couplets to paint vivid musical pictures with an inimitable East Coast twang. He has produced many of his beats himself but here he partners up with the one and only Madlib on 'The Return Of Sasquatch'. It is another killer joint with a mix of classic sounds and leftfield ideas. On the flip is a live rehearsal version of 'The Unknown Comic' which was produced by Edan.

Review: Kilo Kish (aka Kish Robinson) is an interdisciplinary artist and performer who has worked with Vince Staples, Miguel, Jean Dawson and Jesse Boykins III and this, her sophomore album. It's a psychedelic piece of pop art with infectious hooks and industrial beats that muses on the issues of identity, status, and race. The production is often maximalist in a fun 80s fashion with ice-cold staccato raps, self-assured bars and playful elements that keep you locked. This first pressing comes on special transparent blue vinyl via Diggers Factory.

They link up again here on this new 45rpm 'Supreme Trunks'. It's a low-slung beat with spacious drums and minimal detail apart from an edgy synth loopy that marries with the slow, purposeful mic work. Limited to just 400 copies, this is a real treasure.

Review: For his eighth studio album, rapper Open Mike Eagle rather heads down memory lane, after discovering some old mixtapes that ultimately inspired him to take that path. He calls upon the classic boom-bap sounds of the 90s that he grew up with and next to that nostalgia he brings his own witty and introspective lyrical charm. There is a bittersweet sense of humour to some of the tunes and some more smooth and sensitive 90s R&B style jams with plenty of very tight and solid raps along the way.

Review: Ill Adrenaline Records ups the ante once again with this fiery new offering from Awon and Elements. They combine to timeless effect on the first tune, 'Game Matters' which has classic ear boom bap drums with lots of extra details from DJ scratches to lush melodies and stirring backing vocals. It's a richly layered tune then 'Paper Off My Pager' gets more deep, with dusty drum work and closely mic bars next to sultry sax that drifts in and out. The first remix of 'Game Matters' slows it down and turns up the stoner vibes, then an instrumental strips out the vocal for pure beat goodness.

Review: No matter how much you think you know and how hard you might dig into your favourite sounds there will also be the ones you miss. In our case, that is true with this East Coast hip-hop classic from Godfather Don. The independent New York MC and producer dropped his debut album Hazardous back in 1991, originally on Select Records. He has a sound that offers some of the dark soul of his more famous East Coast peers but also an upbeat party aspect and old school hip hop edge, not out as a result of having worked collaboratively with the likes of Kool Keith. A varied, vital record to plug another gap in your collection.
