Review: Hailing from the Isle of Wight and steadily building in momentum via a run of stunning singles, Wet Leg are making their much anticipated breakthrough with their debut album on Domino. The duo hit a note between the brooding post punk and new wave romanticism and a spikier pop streak which should find them winning hearts and minds all over festival season. 'Chaise Longue', 'Wet Dream' and 'Too Late Now' have been doing the rounds since the girls signed to Domino in 2021, and it only takes one listen to know they're going to be huge. Razor sharp hooks, singalong choruses and a droll sense of humour are all conspiring to make Wet Leg your new favourite band.

Review: Limited to just 2000 copies, Jack White's newest solo album 'Fear Of The Dawn' comes in a distinctive blue and white sleeve, making this move away from the White Stripes' native red and white colouration clear. Prefaced by the buzzing lead single 'Taking Me Back', we're stoked for the promised energy of this LP, which is the first of two albums slated to hit the shelves in 2022. This LP comes in either single black, 'astro' blue, or 'glow' white versions, as well as CD for the digi-heads.

Review: Spiritualized fans have been in heaven this last year as their most classic first four albums have all been reissued. Now they are back with a brand new long player, Everything Was Beautiful, written in lockdown and reflects Jason Spaceman's fondness for insolation. He plays 16 different instruments on the record in 11 different studios and also called upon over 30 musicians and singers for help. The list includes his daughter Poppy, long-time collaborator and friend John Coxon, plus string and brass sections, choirs and finger bells and chimes. It makes for a dense, rich album, but would you expect anything else?

Review: Almost two years on from their second album A Hero's Death, Ireland's fast rising guitar team Fontaines DC drop their third offering, Skinty Fia. The band have already shared its lead single 'Jackie Down the Line', and if that's anything to go on, we can expect a somewhat more mature slant on their guitar-fuelled sound, leaning more towards The Smiths and even Billy Bragg than the more rockist posturing of the past.

Review: Alan Vega & Marty Rev's career as Suicide spanned an incredible four decades. During those years, they rarely if ever got much credit for their work but as is often the way, once time passed they started to get deserving plaudits and an ever growing status amongst fans and critics. Now said to be one of the most inspirational outfits of the 70s, they influenced everyone from Depeche Mode to Soft Cell. This brand new, remastered collection takes in tunes from all across the band's career and has plenty of big, raw, energetic and eclectic sounds with track from their first album in 1977 and most recent in 2002.

Review: Let's face it, Jack White has never really stood still, with the stream of solo projects put out since The White Stripes days proof of just how relentless his creative spark is. However, as many have pointed out in reviews of Fear of the Dawn, there's not been that much of a stylistic shift since his joint venture with Meg. As such prepare to be blown away with this latest effort. Although we're not going to say whether that's in a good or bad way.

To call the tracks here obscure is nothing short of horribly reductive. A strange, at time obnoxious and jarring fusion of blues, theatrical rock, prog, and plain weird, it's nothing if not consistently unexpected, and wholly unique. Often huge in sound, but then occasionally minimalistic, it's the noise made by a man who has always threatened to throw the kitchen sink at fans, and has finally found the muscle to do it.

Review: Like many of us, Fred Again keeps a diary. But rather than writing in a journal, pager or Notes app, his diary takes the unusual form of an intensely personal album series, 'Actual Life'. The second instillment in the series hears him once again weave through Londonized R&B, future garage and pop-electronic, charting an 8-month period looking into an intensely difficult period of his life, in which the artist was confronted with a complex case of grief.

Review: Irish post-punk band Fontaines D.C. last appeared don our radar when the Baron of Techno MR Dave Clarke was busy remixing them. Now comes this deluxe and 180g gatefold album Skint Fa with an alternate cover and 20 page lyric book. This is the band's third album in as many years after 2020's A Hero's Death saw them hit the number two spot in the album charts and pick up nominations at the GRAMMYs, BRITs and Ivor Novello Awards. After a sell out tour at Alexandra Palace that now serve up more darkly political ones, thrashing riffs and hard edged drums.

Review: Kurt Vile's long air is as iconic as his voice at this stage. He is a veteran of many solo albums but here he makes his first outing on a major label, happily, that doesn't do much to distil his sound. The singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer heads in all manner of new directions that will appeal to fans old and new. The result stake in meditative sounds with plenty of laid back charm and a great sense of Vile spirit that remains utterly unique. Rob Schnapf's production, too, helps elevate the record.

Review: Toro Y Moi emerged at the heart of an exciting new genre known as chillwave a number of years ago now. His hazy, nostalgic sound was awash with pop, downtempo and synth influences all reimagined through rose-tinted memories of those endless summers we all remember living as children. Since then he has grown ever more complex and mature in his musical themes and tended towards a more indie based sound, but still with plenty of psyched-out effects and blissful vibes. This latest album is another gem that takes you from the beach to the sofa to the dance floor and back again in gloriously feel good fashion.

Review: Many of us turned to music during the lockdowns to keep us sane. For dub lovers, one pace was more reliable than any for some killer sounds. Greg Dread's online live sessions were always hugely uplifting and in turn inspired him to crate this new album. It hits a little more dark and frenzied than the first volume and includes Dreadzone's remix of Megative's of Big Audio Dynamite's 'Sightsee MC' featuring The Clash's Mick Jones on guitar and Don Letts on vocals. Elsewhere Gaudi, Professor Skank, Bazil, Sub Mantra, Dubmatix and Dreadzone all feature.

Here Comes Love (demo) (4:56)
Mr Zak (demo) (4:12)
Review: Continuing the label's special 7"s releases that capture the nascent 80s post punk, dub, funk and pop - as examined on releases by The Jellies, Woo, Phantom Band, 4AM and more - here a discovery of unheard demos from Dislocation Dance's Midnight Shift album.
As part of the eighties Manchester scene, the band's pop and jazz sensibilities have continued to garner attention, offering a rightful place in the city's rich music history.
With the closure of Richard Boon's New Hormones label in 1982, they came to the attention of Geoff Travis' Rough Trade. Creating a home studio in the basement of an old rambling farmhouse in Withington, Ian Runacres (guitar, vocals), with lyricist Paul Emmerson (bass), set to work creating demos to garner a deal.
Inspired by the funk-disco of Dr Buzzards Original Savannah Band debut album, Here Comes Love was written using Roland TR-606 drum machine, guitars, bass and (cheap) keyboard, its magical and lo-fi charmed quality melts hearts.
On Mr Zak, the fun Runacres had is evident. Written as an "indie" song, but with Aztec Camera and Burt Bacharrach on his mind, with Andy Diagram (trumpet) and Kathryn Way (vocals), hides a structure matching the album version, but which in its rudimentary instrumentation and production is unique and outshines the later version, to encase a specific period and innocence, of time.

Review: "Open-ended, I ask myself that question all the time, for my work, for my love, even for my friends. It's just really good to check in with yourself and it's a play on words, about touring and about travelling, being in transition." So says Sharon Van Etten in response to anyone asking why her fourth studio album, first released in 2014, lacks grammatical accuracy in its omission of a question mark.

Technical points aside, Are We There originally landed to widespread critical acclaim, and eight years on it's still not hard to understand why. A mammoth record in terms of scope and emotional resonance, this is hearts breaking over crooning guitars and tearful pianos, straddling a perfect line between soft rock, country and alt-ish guitar pop.

Review: Astrel K are a band formed by Rhys Edwards of Ulrika Spacek. They're actually based in Stockholm rather than the UK, and it might be our imagination but it feels like you can hear that Scandivanian chill around the edges of their breezy, indie-psych sound on this, their debut album. Flickering i is led by single 'Is It It Or Is It I?', which showcases the accomplished, multi-timbral nature of their sound. They glide between romantic orchestration, jangly guitar and more textural, atmospheric touches for a sound very much not of this earth, albeit rooted in refined songwriting.

By way of four noisy, grinding, discordant yet emotive sonic 'trading cards', Partridge sings of love and its winding ups and downs, nailing the janky and rocky emotions felt therein. Lo-fi yet sprawling in its proggy indie jazzy ambition, we're forced to agree that Love Is, indeed, The Future.

Review: Next up on Dusseldorf's Themes For Great Cities is the debut LP from local trio Folie 2, comprised of vocalist Marlene Kollender, Gregor Darman (aka Rasputin) and Sebastian Welicki (LSW/Trashlagoon). Anyone who caught their great podcast on LYL Radio full of slow, trancey music knows what to expect on this one. There's a strong nod to '80s pop for the most part, but also taking in chugging dark disco slow burners ('Confrontation') neon-lit boogie down numbers ('Night Times') and taking influence from sounds of their homeland circa the '70s ('Fullness Of My Heart').

Review: First released in September 2021 on digital formats, coinciding with what would have been Dolores O'Riordan's 50th birthday, Remembering Dolores is The Cranberries' heartfelt ode to their iconic and inimitable lead singer, who tragically drowned in 2018. By that point, she'd helped the beloved and critically acclaimed Irish alt rockers sell some 50million albums across the globe, give or take, picking up ten US, five UK, and 14 Canadian platinum albums in the process, with the final recordings that went into last album In The End bagging a Grammy-nomination. Arguably one of the most impactful bands and one of the planet's most awesome lead singers, the 18 tracks here only really give a partial insight into the individual and combined talent that catapulted the outfit into the musical stratosphere. Combining traditional Celtic vocal tones with gritty guitar work, chart-friendly pop sensibilities and a consistent undercurrent of experimentalism, often dealing with highly resonant themes both personal and political.

Review: The rather twee artwork of this album doesn't do the music justice (and anyway, back in those days it was standard practice as many albums used template covers as a way to cut costs of pressings.) Summer Brings The Sunshine is a glorious country rock album from the unwieldy location of Missouri which is where Jimmy Carter laid it down in amongst farmland. His own leads are backed by superb female backing singers, while his pedals do plenty of work and his feisty guitar licks make for some killer upbeat hooks. This is beautiful and cosmic American music that takes you stateside in an instant.

Review: Electro pop outfit Let's Eat Grandma reach new heights on their latest album, Two Ribbons, which takes a close, frank and revealing look at friendship. This is their third album and most mature to date. It is one that differs plenty from their first two in that goes big with plenty of epic dance floor breakdowns and hints of hit making 80s magic, jubilant choruses and neon hued synths that often swell to great heights. "We're changing," as Hollingworth sings on the title track, "like two ribbons, still woven, although we're fraying."

Review: Kathryn Jospeh has been on a super run of album form that started with her Scottish Album of the Year award winning debut in 2014 and carried on through 2018 follow up From When I Wake The Want Is. She now completes the hattrick with For You Who Are Wronged. It is a record about fighting to keep hold of love and was recorded at The Lengths Studio in Fort William with producer Lomond Campbell. Anyone who enjoys Lana Del Ray, Kate Bush or Erland Cooper is sure to lap this one up, not least for its fantastically long and evocative track titles.
