  1. Everything That Looks Good (2:32)
  2. You Don't Deserve (3:03)
Review: A serious self-press rarity from the heart of Clarksville, Suggs never achieved the recognition he deserved during his tenure as a band leading soul man. Still in Clarksville and now a missionary, the sentiments of this recording history peak resonate with what he does now: "Everything That Looks Good" is a JB style message on the lure of temptation while "You Don't Deserve", an instrumental that sees Bubba switching his vocals for equally commanding sax, is a moment for poignant, soul-searching reflection. Lord have mercy.

  1. Spies Are Watching Me (7:15)
  2. Le Disco Des Capitales (6:45)
Review: Sounds like it came out of Lagos in 1971, actually written and recorded in Lyon in 2015: Voilaaa is the brainchild of Bruno Hovart whose long relationship with Favorite goes way back to his days as Patchworks, Mr President and The Dynamics. Recording on a whole host of vintage machines and calling upon local African singers both cuts have a real authentic sense of realness; "Spies Are Watching Me" drives with big horns and swooning strings which isn't dissimilar to the work of The Movers, while the TY Boys-esque "Le Disco Des Capitales" is a heavier, more concentrated slab of floor-minded disco where the groove takes more of a forefront role. Apparently there's a whole album of this cooking... We can't wait to hear it.

  1. You're Starting Too Fast (3:41)
  2. You Can't Even Walk In The Park (2:33)
Review: Johny Pate's output dates back to 1958, and that in itself is something to marvel at. The Chicago jazz bassist is a veteran, and the man has worked with some of the best and greatest, and he's had key appearances on legendary jazz labels such as King Records, MGM, and Parlophone. The original to "You're Starting Too Fast" was out in 1970 on the Outrageous LP, and it has without a doubt stood the test of time; an energetic, riff-heavy funk monster with screeching organs and a bumpy groove, we simply love it. On the B-side, "You Can't Even Walk In The Park" is dirtier, a little slower, and moody, but my word are those trumpets glorious. Killer.

  1. Spring Yard Zone (4:07)
  2. Beautiful Forest (4:19)
  3. Neon Night Riders (2:48)
  4. Port Town (3:16)
Review: Aside from reissuing a whole heap of glorious boogie material from the 1980'sm People's Potential Unlimited also have their own distribution roster, and Cosmic Chronic is right up there waving the flag for the US stable. To kick-start 2016, we have a four-tracker from newcomer Arcade Odyssey, and as you'd expect, they're every but as funky and lo-fi as those instrumentals from back in the day. "Spring Yard Zone" kicks off with massive electro baseline, tropical melodies, and a hazy vibe, while "Beautiful Forest" breaks the beat down and goes Eastern with its synths. Flip the plate and you'll be confronted by the huge, stabbing bassline and fast beats of the utterly gnarly "Neon Night Riders" - easily the gem of the lot - and wound down thanks to the gentler, more tame waters of "Port Town". Sick.

  1. Good Fight (4:01)
  2. Funkaphrenic (2:51)
Review: "Good Fight" by Templebys is one of those hidden, hard-to-find funk gems that belong only to the most frantic of collectors out there - or is it? Well, it sounds and looks like it should be, but in reality it's new music recorded in 2015. This is Funkaphrenic's first release, and the title tune is simply marvellous, a liquid-like soul bomb with a funky edge and one hell of a mean groove - top of the funk charts this week, without a doubt! On the flip of the 7", you'll find "Funkaphrenic" itself, a fast-paced, organ-charged monster to lift the dance floor and get all the dancers shakin'.

  2. Special Friends (5:17)
Review: Few things are certain in life: death, taxes and Dam Funk always living up to his name. Fans will be well aware of the Preludey, Chicago synth feels of "O.B.E" as it's one of the many crowning moments of his recent album Invite The Light. "Special Friends", however, is exclusive to this vinyl. A woozy, jazzy boogie joint with eight whole minutes to wriggle and writhe in variations, full focus is on the juiciest, wettest slap bass you'll hear all week.

  2. Have Some Of Me (3:56)
Review: The Glades label was a very fine outlet for outsider soul music, indeed. Yes, we have just made that term up, but that is exactly the sort of tip that these guys were on back in the '70s, and each one of their releases had something new and fresh about them. Nate Calhoun's "Funktown" was no different, and its chirpy disco beat is led by a delightful organ and veritably sunny, happy-go-lucky vocals. "Have Some Of Me", on the other hand, is deeper and more soulful, a sublime little ballad for the lovers.

  1. Well Good (3:30)
  2. Bells (4:07)
Review: Destination Youngstown Ohio, 1973: A young troupe of musicians gain local notoriety through their on-point covers and originals. While they never make it past the local legend status, they did record one 45" on a very limited run... And here it is. "Well Good" is a slinky slab of sizzling Hammond-led funk that builds with the help of some interesting time signature switches and electrified guitar. Think Booker T crossed with Shuggie Otis. "Bells" shows the band's softer side as they lay down some slow burning, soulful harmonic heaven that's made all the more poignant by the fact that the band didn't continue recording. Fittingly, this reissue is highly limited too.

Review: In case you've been living under a very thick layer of concrete for the past ten years, The Heliocentrics are a collective run by Malcolm Catto who explore everything form funk, to hip-hop and jazz, held together by their mutual - and spiritual - admiration for powers of Sun Ra, and the legacy that he's left behind. No, we won't tell you who Sun Ra is, you should know. Their new LP From The Deep comes on Now-Again, their usual home, and an offshoot of the mighty Stones Throw. With twelve tracks for you to get your head around, there's plenty in here for everyone, and the string jazzy element that carries the album forwards is only the backbone of the music. The rest, our friends, is pure experimentation of every sort, and from electronica to exotica and hip-hop, it's a true journey into outer space. God Ra would be proud.

Review: A long lost cosmic jazz funk document from Zagreb's underground funk scene. Spektar's only official album was a self-titled largely vocal-led affair in 74, but behind the scenes the band was jamming and creating fusions that were recorded but never released. Until now... From the organ-led jazz fire of "Lisinski III" to the brushed drum shuffle and sleazy bass of "Subiceva IV" to the classic Hammond-smashing opening salvo, it's crazy that it's taken 40 years for this album to see the light of day... Let's make up for lost time.

Review: No other troupe are as tight, as decorated or as outright funky as the JBs. Led by James Brown-appointed leader Fred Wesley (who replace Pee Wee Ellis) their work with Brown, Collins and Byrd is as instantly distinctive as it is heavily sampled. Damn Right I Am Somebody was the first of three instrumental albums they delivered in the early 70s and it's a loaded cannon of bright, super-tight funk and soul. From energetic, heavy groove highs ("I'm Payin' Taxes What I'm Buyin'") to emotional, yearning compositions ("Make Me What You Want Me To Be") to hushed, romantic, end-of-night soul ("You Sure Love To Ball"), this is testament to how on-point the JB's were under Fred's leadership.

Review: Long-established LA funk troupe Orgone re-deliver their 2015 album Beyond The Sun on gatefold coloured vinyl. As if the sounds were beautiful enough... Seven albums deep, the ever-expanding collective (who've backed the likes of Pharohe Monche, The Pharcyde and Plantlife) hone their sound to even tighter, silkier depths. Now rolling with new singer Adryon De Leon, there's a newfound sense of energy and style across the album. From the sweaty, stompy glam-funk grooves of "Someone's Love Is Real" to the smouldering smokiness of "No Pain", Orgone continue to remain in their own universe. If your collection doesn't boast this, now is the time.

Review: The Stone LP is what really made Billy Green the artist that he is today. Starting off as a rhythm and blues guitar player back in the '60s, the cult movie saw him move onto more experimental territories, and enter the broad genre that is referred to as 'prog-rock'. This album is much more than that, however, and the opening track "Eco Blue / Toadstrip" is a clear signal of the madness and experimentation that's to quickly follow suit on the remainder of the LP. You have everything from fast percussion sequences, to gnarly guitar riffs, and distorted voices, all wrapped in an early, gritty electronic bed of sound. This one is clearly for the samplers, a diggers dream come true; and now available again in its original format. Recommended.

The short answer is not much, but we can certainly add to the list of compliments and tell you that this is a super-clean Polypro repress, so you don't have to go out your way to listen to it PROPERLY. The man, Roy Ayers, is obviously a legend who still performs to this day, but this album must be some of his best work, and contains the cult single "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", sampled by everyone form here to Katmandu, and still a flawless song to this day. This dude is up there with the lies Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, etc etc. A stone-cold classic.
