Dimenzio - "Bamba"
Marius Cultier - "Diamant"
Review: Two Gilles Peterson classics on one 7 inch !! As per usual, the unstoppable Mukatsuku delivers the undeliverable, and somehow the label boss Nik Weston has managed to license a pair of sought after tunes to find on the second-hand market. It's the second instalment of the Club Jazz series with this 45 a Hungary vs France sound clash.Hungary easily wins this one thanks to the sublime rhythm that is "Bamba" by Dimenzio, an inimitable jazz-dance leviathan that manages to mash-up all the right elements of jazz together with something a little weirder and electronic - a truly supreme piece of music that is recommended to ANYONE. Marius Culter's "Diamant" is a high calibre jazz funk missile, and works beautifully as a stand-alone, but its somewhat swamped by the sheer quality of its counterpart. Recommended. As played by Dean Rudland, Mr Thing, Ashely Beedle, Faze Action,Red Greg,Scrimshire,Frank Booker,Nancy Noise and Pete from On The Corner Records etc

The Turtles - "I'm Chief Kamanawanalea" (Chief Rocca edit) (3:42)
Steady B - "Serious" (BDP 12" remix) (4:28)
Review: 1968's "I'm Chief Kamanawanalea" is perhaps one of the greatest forgotten nuggets of pure breakbeatism, and the original by The Turtles dates back to 1968. The date isn't perhaps that surprising in relation to the sounds used and the quirkiness of the tune, but it's the fact that it sounds like straight-up hip-hop from early 80s NY; Chief Rocca aka J Rocc does a bit of editing on this version, but the meat and bones of the original are definitely there. Steady B features on the flip with a remix from BDP, and this one is a pure throwback hip-hop banger like they used to make them - think Run DMC but much more from the underground.

It's Just Begun (3:43)
Troglodyte (Cave Man) (3:34)
Review: Fresh from 72: Two enormously influential funk gems from Jimmy Castor bunch's debut album It's Just Begun: The heavily-sampled title track is a veritable racecourse of a groove, hurtling around with cyclical glee and hooky chanting vocals while "Troglodyte" is a playful observation on man's more basic wants and needs. Both have aged exceedingly well... As has almost all of Jimmy Castor's work.

Love's Supposed To Be (3:15)
As We Do Our Thing (4:06)
Review: After releases on Goodgroove and Riddim Fruit, The Allergies, aka Bristol nu-funk duo DJ Moneyshot and Rackabeat, found a welcome home in Jalapeno for their debut album, As We Do Our Thing, which was released earlier this year. Vinyl fans sore at the lack of the album in their preferred format will find consolation in the fact two gleaming highlights now feature on this 45 for Jalapeno. Up top, the smart soul sampling and tight breakbeat patterns of "Love's Supposed To Be" represent all that is good about the party-starting style of The Allergies, whilst "As We Do Our Thing" is a more midtempo horn funker.

Mary Jane (3:32)
The Horseman (4:27)
Review: If it weren't for young and energetic bands like Breakdown Brass, the New York soul and funk scene would be a true relic of the '70s and '80s era. Luckily, these whipper-snappers know how to lay down the truth, and their reinterpretation of Rick James' "Mary Jane" is a total winner - all brass and instruments, of course. On the flip, you have a brass version of Nadev Nirenberg's "The Horseman", a masterful adaptation of what is surely one of the most hummable rhythms ever. Limited!

We're Doing It (Thang) (part I) (2:55)
We're Doing It (Thang) (part II) (3:08)
Review: More Eddie Bo material in straight repress format from the Bo Sound vaults! It's another scorcher from 1970 right here, except that Eddie is joined by The Soul Finders across two parts of the majestic "We're Doing It (Thang)". The first cut is funky, laid-back and complete with a rolling guitar riff; the second joint sparks to life after a sublime entrance of broken percussion to form a deep and vibrant funk bomb with true grit.

Never Gonna Leave You (6:34)
The Dip Drop (7:31)
Review: Evans Pyramid material has been the foundations of the Cultures Of Soul imprint. The US-based boogie reissue label has put out nothing but gold over the years, but this has surely been th best gear on the label, and although both "Never Gonna Leave You" and "The Dip Drop" have been released before, this much needed repress is always welcome on our shelves. The former is a soft, hazy disco tune, but the real stunner is the latter thanks to its utterly addictive bassline and instantly recognizable vocals softly shouting "uh uh". Masterful.

Review: Still scorching from the heat of their debut album 55, Hamburg's mysterious steel pan handlers return with a dope little 45 that features one of the excellent covers from their album plus an exclusive that we guarantee will drive your next floor crazy... Dennis Coffey's "Scorpio" takes the lead with its instantly distinctive break and pace. Flip for Sugarhill's "8th Wonder" that's riddled with confidently swung drums, smoky trumpets and a groove so funky you might just have to drop it twice. Give the drummer some.

Getting To The Middle (part I) (2:43)
Getting To The Middle (part II) (2:53)
Review: 1970s "Getting To The Middle" by Edwin 'Eddie' Joseph Bocage, or simply Eddie Bo, is one sublime EP in a sea of infinite soul releases from the New Orleans singer and composer. He was famous for his seductive vocal waves, but this particular single lies more on the funk end of the soul spectrum, and both parts 1 and 2 of the single instantly provoke that indescribable 'get down' feeling. Part 1 is for the party people and Part 2 is for the DJs, the latter leaving thing nice and instrumental.

Airto Moreira - "Celebration Suite" (4:22)
Gilberto Gil - "Maracatu Atomico" (4:22)
Review: Timed to coincide with the upcoming 2016 Olympics in Rio, the $tateside label comes through with a 7"-shaped celebration of Brazilian music featuring two classic cuts from the archives of Airto Moreira and Gilberto Gil. Even if you don't know it by name, Moreira's "Celebration Suite" should be instantly familiar, a jazz-fusion/samba batucada anthem that truly lives up its joyous name!! Flip it over and Gilberto Gil is on hand for a more mellow accompaniment in the shape of bossa samba standard "Maracatu Atomico," lifted from his 1975 album Viramundo. Comes as a yellow and green samba seven special!

Good Time Girl (feat King Merc) (4:18)
Family Tree (4:00)

Review: Kylie Auldist is a heavyweight Aussie soul singer whose powerful lungs have graced many a hit over the years. Now, with the help of Lance Ferguson and Graeme Pogson, she's recorded a solo album, Family Tree, and this here EP features a selection of tracks from it. Gone is the raw funk vibes of old with Auldist opting for a bright and synthetic mid-'80s pop-soul sound instead. It largely works too with the Donna Allen-esque "Sensational", the chrome and carpet grooves of "Family Tree" and the late-'70s US funk style of "Rewards" as standouts.

Review: Previously spotted on Acid Jazz beating Duffy at her own game, London northern soul troupe The Third Degree return with two superfluous covers. Review: Light In the Attic have outdone themselves again with this latest reissue of what is surely Betty Davis' best and most coveted work. Her iconic voice is transported by the legendary productions of, to name a few, a couple of peeps by the name of Miles Davis, Teo Macero and Herbie Hancock. According to the label, what is special about this release is its pioneering stance on jazz, where across nine songs these greats pretty much already started and finished the free-jazz sound. For the late 1960s, this is some truly special and forward-thinking material; a clear precursor to the mad, improvisational - and often misinterpreted - seminal album by Miles Davis himself, On The Corner. This is mostly unreleased material, and the LP comes with a booklet of interviews and rare photos. Unmissable.

Armed with his now signature skill of taking well known classics, here we takes on two of the biggest possible tracks and rewires them for today's beat-hungry floors. Complete with a beat version and DJ tools, Nick rides right into the heart of another sweet beat success.

Don't Go (feat Joe Quarteman) (4:00)
Don't Go (instrumental) (4:01)
Review: Washington's Fort Knox Five have literally always been doing their thang. The quartet is made up of Sid Barcelona, Jon Horvath, Rob Myers and Steve Raskin, a collaboration of musicians who have given us a wonderful selection of music across many a genre. They've almost always appeared on their of Fort Knox label, so this new single for the Dinked imprint feels like a welcomed change in their releasing pattern. It's a one-track situation here, but "Don't Go" is a funk bomb capable of deconstructing any dancefloor form here to Detroit, and Joe Quarteman's zesty vocals are immediately hummable. Check that instrumental cut, too - pure, break joy!

Lamine (4:05)
Police Woman (2:32)
Kunming Beats (1:48)
Review: The latest artist to join Dinked's roster of soul and funk obsessives is DJ D.S.K, a China-based Brit who grew up cutting and scratching hip-hop and old funk breaks. The three tracks showcased here seem to be built around samples from tasty old funk bombs, from cut-up and rearranged breaks, to punchy horn lines and low-slung basslines. Lead cut "Lamine" is particularly potent, featuring as it does DJ-friendly drum breaks, jangling soul guitars, rubbery bass and a floor-friendly rhythm track. Flip for the looser, electric piano-heavy dancefloor strut of "Police Woman", and the dusty, head-nodding, trumpet-laden hip-hop bounce of "Kumming Beats" (and, yes, it's a sneaky cut-up of an old James Brown tune).

In the meantime they're keeping us warm with their sixth album, 1980's Outubro. In places you can really hear big synthetic influences instantly, like the heavy Yamaha riff on full-powered opener "Papasong". In others it's more subtle and aged (thanks to Daft Punk) with class, like the sexy robo-voxed sleazy funk strutter "Dear Limmertz". Elsewhere you can hear the band at their percussive prime ("Carta Pro Airto") and at their damn right sexiest ("Outubro")... And get all excited for their new material.

Review: Not just a super-rare set of dreamy soul jazz but also a neat piece of independent label history: JSR were a Jersey-based imprint with an open source attitude to their business, allowing ambitious young musicians their first break contract-free (albeit with limited pressings) In 1980 Coleman took them up on the offer, played most of the instruments himself and even designed the artwork: Taking Care Of Business is quite a literal title. It's literally brilliant, too; just check the Shuggy style vocal leans on "Due Consideration" or the swooning Roy Ayers style vibraphone magic of "Sweet Bird" and you'll see exactly what we mean. Stunning.

Look up the meaning of Deep Funk online and the smarter cookies will have this New World 7", The World Today, listed as a prime example; a huge cut for the master Keb Darge back at the turn of the 21st century and a very record whose original copies trade hands for silly money. Recorded and released back in 1974 for Frank Virtue's Philly label Virtue Records, both cuts from the 7" have been kindly licensed to Athens Of The North by the man's daughters. Highway To Heathen (8:38)
For Heathen's Sake (6:21)
He Touched Me (6:22)
Review: Since Nick The Record has one of the deepest collections going, it's little surprise that his ongoing Record Mission series has delivered some killer re-edits of ridiculously obscure gems. For this third 12", he once again joins forces with Idjut Boy Dan Tyler to rework a trio of gospel-tinged cuts from the late '70s/early '80s. Arguably most impressive is A-side "Highway To Heathen", a gradually rising, off-piste, boogie-era disco jam blessed with killer talkbox vocals. On the flip you'll find the more straight-forward gospel sing-along of "For Heathen's Sake", and "he Touched Me", a slower, more soulful gospel excursion that benefits greatly from lashings of Tyler's trademark space echo and tape delay.

Review: It's more chilly, worldly outsider jazz gear from Barcelona's excellent Rocafort imprint; this time the crew return with the one-man show Kind & Kinky Zoo alongside Adam Gibbons, both making their debut for the label with this smart two-tracker. "Wonder Bra" is a solo mission from K&KZ, a fast-paced drum locomotive with plenty of whistling organs flying around in the high-ends, while Lack Of Afro's remix of "VLAM" by K&KZ and Adam Gibbons is a funkier, more laid-back swinger for a bit of one, two, three four on the dancefloor. Review: Adam Mori aka B.Bravo is back like a thick gush of smoke filling up the dance floor, and the Brownswood-Bleep associate is in no mood to wait till the warm up set is done. These two new smokers for the Bastard Jazz imprint are pure class, every bit as sexy and seductive as we've come to expect from the producer, starting with the sultry claps and bass of the excellent "Im For Real", a sun-scorched killer of a tune, fit for riding shotgun and turing the rooftop down. On the flipside, Mr Carmack detunes "Stay The Night" down to a funky, mid-tempo level, and it's just about the grooviest of boogie tracks that we've heard in a while. Think Daft Punk meets Willie Hutch. Wonderful.
