Jordan Rakei - "Wind Parade" (4:50)
Alfa Mist - "Galaxy" (6:03)
Review: Blue Note Re:imagined is a carefully curated collection of brand-new covers of classic material from the legendary label as served up by a selection of the UK scene's most exciting young talents including Ezra Collective, Nubya Garcia and Brit Award-winning Jorja Smith. For this latest 7" it's Jordan Rakei, who actually hails from Aus, but let's not get mad about that because the super smooth soul singer reaches new heights on the free flowing, heart opening 'Wind Parade'. Jazz pianist Alfa Mist takes care of the flip with a suitably cosmic exploration on 'Galaxy' that pairs live, busy drums and soaring synths with rich chords.

Review: This majestic jazz love letter was written in 2015. It was Hokkaido pianist Ryo Fukui's last album and now gets an official reissue allowing us all to once again sink into his personal contemporary jazz offering. Fukui is celebrated for his delicate styles and miraculous albums such as 1976's Scenery and a year later, Mellow Dream. He was not only a player, but also a club owner having linked up with his wife Yasuko to open his very own jazz space, Slowboat, in Sapporo in 1995. In the years after he honed and perfected his craft, taking it to new labels as heard here.

Review: On Help, Timothy Duval is in his most ambitious mood yet. It finds him collaborate with King Kruele and The xx associate Rodaidh McDonald as well as Lil Silva, Vegyn and Mr Mitch during session help in both London and LA. Inspired by an exploration of mental health, YouTube tutorials, the healing powers of proper friendship and life in the music industry, it is a widescreen record that ranges from sentimental piano pieces to experimental pop via jazz piano, warped electronic textures and organic world music soundtracks. Spellbinding isn't the half of it.

Review: Jazz Is Dead is a series that welcomes contemporary musicians to revisit jazz storied of old. This collection challenges Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad to utilise vintage equipment to create new master soundscapes, and they really come correct. Roy Ayers, Gary Bartz, Marcos Valle, Azymuth, Doug Carn, Joao Donato, & Brian Jackson are some of the legends who feature and the album is a free flowing delight that touches on soaring and soulful highs as well as bossa-tinged shufflers and plenty in between.

Review: Japanese jazz pianist Ryo Fukui is one of the most delicate and skilled payers of his generation. The Hokkaido pianist also owned his own jazz club, Slowboat, with his wife Yasuko, and this month two of his bets loved albums are being reissued with a special half speed remastering job. This one is a recording of him playing in New York with Lisle Atkinson on bass and Leroy Williams on drums. It was laid down in 1999 and inspired by Ryo's mentor Barry Harris. There are plenty of poetic reworks of classics and glowing piano pieces that easily wander their way into your heart.

Review: It's 52 years since Thelonius Monk played the show at a California high school which makes up this new long player on Impulse. It happened after a 16 year old student at the school held a concert to raise some money for its International Club, and some how managed to persuade Thelonious Monk's manager that his charge should be the headliner. Monk obliged and turned up with his quartet, and in this recording you can hear every single detail from the creaks of the piano bench to Ben Riley's swishing hi-hats on 'Ruby, My Dear.' The backstory alone makes this one an essential purchase, while of course the music itself isn't too shabby, either.

Review: Percussion, sax and piano trio Mammal Hands have long been a unique proposition within British jazz, with their increasing use of both Indian Tabla rhythms and electronic sounds - as well as a fondness for Steve Reich/Terry Riley style minimalism - making their albums especially hard to pigeonhole. Captured Spirits, the Norwich-based combo's fourth studio set, keeps up this tradition. While rooted in the twinkling piano motifs and seductive, ear-pleasing saxophone solos of jazz, percussionist Jesse Barrett's rhythms are particularly bold and forthright, drawing just as much from contemporary dancefloor grooves and club-ready jazz-funk as more traditional jazz fare. It's an especially addictive combination and one that makes Captured Spirits a gorgeous and lively listen.

Review: Since being touted as jazz's next big thing back in 2014, Moses Boyd has released very little music, though the few EPs he has put out have been uniformly superb. We'd expect plenty of hype around this debut album, but we can assure you it will be deserved. Boyd is a drummer by trade and it's the variety and quality of the rhythms - some framed by traditional jazz, others hip-hop, grime, dubstep, dancehall and Tony Allen style Afrobeat grooves - that really stand out, despite the presence of fuzzy, Fela Kuti style horn motifs, booming basslines, Juju guitar solos, liquid jazz-funk flourishes, dark trip-hop tropes and some suitably inspiring vocals. Boyd may have taken his time, but it was definitely worth the wait.

Review: The real diggers out there will know this Italian library music soundtrack is a super hard to find album and another one often considered a Holy Grail by those in the know. Better known as the FARFALLA album (which means The Butterfly and is a nod to the fantastic artwork) it is a widescreen jazz opus taking in easy listening, gazing out of a window fare as well as more complex and challenging Psychedelia, with scat vocals and lounge grooves also featuring. It first came in 1971 on SR Records but has been almost impossible to find since. Do not miss.

Review: Chicago jazz man Makaya McCraven has built up a fine head of steam in the last few years. Releasing mostly on International Anthem, he has a freeform style that was formed by playing in a local Windy City jazz club many nights a week, for many years. Previous albums have been stitched together from tens of hours of recordings of such live performances and this new one is actually an addendum to his 2018 LP Universal Beings, featuring new material that didn't fit on the first 2 x 12". It ranges from dark and intense to more spiritual and is another essential offering.

Review: Since it was first released in the collective's native Brazil in 1978, the self-titled debut album from Guilherme Coutinho E O Groupo Stalo has become a sought-after item amongst collectors of Latin jazz. This reissue - the first of any kind - proves why. Offering a mixture of samba-soaked Latin jazz rhythms, sweet vocals, spacey analogue synthesizer sounds, Azymuth style electric piano motifs, MPB style songwriting and Brazilian jazz-funk stylistic tropes, it's a joyously sunny and quirkily off-kilter affair that impresses from start to finish. Production wise it's a little loose and fuzzy round the edges, but that only adds to the album's obvious allure. Recommended!

Review: There is a wealth of Roy Ayer reissues out there right now, and we're all for it. West Coast Vibes is the latest, and is a full length written in 1963 while Ayers was working in Los Angeles with pianist Jack Wilson. It lead to his first recording contract and is what many believe to be his finest and freest musical expression, with no commercial overtones but plenty of the warmth and colour that he became so well known for. It has all the unique percussion you would expect and is a much more conventional jazz record than he later offered up. Add in the soulful saxophone of Curtis Amy who played along, and you have an essential Ayers record.
