Dead Eyes Opened (6:30)
Bullet (2:45)
Mount (2:16)
Review: Ahead of two albums worth of Severed Heads reissues on the excellent Medical Records, their West Coast compadres Dark Entries present a 12" edition of what is perhaps the band's most iconic track. One of three records due this month to celebrate Dark Entries fifth anniversary, this 12" is themed around "Dead Eyes Opened", perhaps Severed Heads' most iconic track and presented here in extended 12" mix version. Anyone with a passing interest in primitive electronics should be more than familiar with "Dead Eyes Opened" which sounds remarkably ahead of it's time even today. Both the B Side tracks from the original 1984 pressing make the cut too and Dark Entries have done a wonderful job in replicating the artwork too.

Be At His Command
Vor Und Zuruck
Review: With one single from pioneering producer Shackleton having already emerged on his Woe To The Septic Heart! Label this year in the shape of the synthesis-based Freezing Opening Thawing, he makes a swift return with the first installment of the Deliverance Series. Fans of his last work will be right at home with the minimal, almost Villalobos-esque sounds of "Beat His Command", whose wiry arpeggio seems capable of tunnelling its way directly into your brain. "Vor Und Zuruck" continues the synthetic choir motif of its associate, melding Shackleton's trademark percussive bounce with an almost weightless structure and progressively psychedelic structure that sounds like a digitised acid trip. This is still recognisably Shackleton, but it sounds like he's rebuilt his sound from the ground up.

Review: The latest show stopping release from RVNG INTL's archival series offers the first authorized re-edition of Craig Leon's pair of early '80s albums Nommos and Visiting. For the uninitiated, Leon is a composer and producer who largely helped shape the early NYC punk and new wave scene with his assistance on landmark debuts from Suicide, Richard Hell, The Ramones and Blondie. His own music however is something different, with both Nommos and Visiting highly sought after among the more cosmically-minded crate diggers, with the former the subject of several unofficial bootlegs and a particular favourite of the cosmic daddy himself Danielle Baldelli. Inspired by an exhibit of extra terrestrial sculpture in New York, Leon crafted some truly ahead of it's time electronic music on both Nommos and Visiting and this RVNG edition presents the albums as s Leon had originally intended, under the banner of Anthology of Interplanetary Folk Music in homage to Harry Smith's similarly titled influential collection of folk music issued some 20 years previously.

Review: The final record of this Nautil series is perhaps the 12" which offers the most bespoke example of what Hidden Hawaii is trying to express across its three records. The A-side is a half-time slice of drum and bass inspired by the crackle and hiss of a Basic Channel noise floor and dub techno chords of someone like Fluxion. The B-side, a track full of clear-cut 170BPM rhythms, also dips into a pool of dub techno, which merges the caustic haze of sounds similar to Quantec's Unusual Signals LP with flickers of drum and bass percussion you'd expect from Exit Records or the Samuari Horo label.

Review: There's always been something rather special about King Britt's ability to effortlessly switch musical focus between projects and aliases. Contrast, for example, the retro-soul giddiness of Sylk 130, the electronic polyrhythms and heavy bruk of Oba Funke, and the trippy electronic darkness of his work under the baffling Fhloston Paradigm pseudonym. This debut album under that alias - on the back of a handful of singles a few years back - is predictably magical, mixing spaced-out textures and stargazing synths with off-kilter rhythms, loose jazz beats and Detroit-inspired grooves. Dark and atmospheric, with a touch of the Jeff Mills about it (certainly conceptually, if not aesthetically), The Phoenix makes for mesmerizing listening from start to finish.

Review: The addition of Alessandro Cortini to Hospital Productions with this Sonno LP can be lined alongside Ron Morelli and Ninos Du Brasil as examples of Dominick Fernow's enduring capacity to surprise as a label owner. Fans of Nine Inch Nails will be more than familiar with the Bologna-born Cortini who served the long running American industrial rock band twice, though more recently the musician has gained a degree of prominence for his recordings under his own name and the Sonoio guise. The latter project in particular has seen Cortini experiment prolifically with the Buchla synth to celebrated results, making the chosen methods for his Hospital debut somewhat of a departure. Sonno consists of nine truly immersive recordings made in unspecified hotel rooms using a Roland MC202 synthesiser and a delay pedal with the results described as quite aptly as "beautifully restrained yet oddly emotive".

Review: Alien atmospheres, bassy sonar blips, crackling ambience, fizzing white noise and a barely-there groove makes the A-side of this second Nautil 12" a delight for ambient, industrial, drum and bass, techno and by and large experimental lovers alike. 943 has all the hallmarks of a Felix K production only without the rolling D&B beats, but who needs them when you have spatial textures like this! Toolshop drums with the rhythm of a hammer hitting a nail out of time provides the B-side with a awkward groove while dubby stabs form and disappear in the background behind the sound of hissing pistons from a make-believe steam works.

Review: Ambient explorers Dalhous - AKA producers Marc Dalla and Alex Ander- have some intriguing influences; apparently this second full length for Blackest Ever Black was inspired by their fascination with the life and work of radical psychiatrist R.D Laing. Whether this is noticeable in the music is debatable, though there are plenty of varied moods, dreamy melodies, cascading electronics and glitchy rhythms to be found on Will To Be Well. Certainly, it's a thoroughly engaging and entertaining set, far lighter and more melodious in tone and texture than their 2013 debut. There are still droning passages of intense melancholy, of course, but these are countered by sun-bright melodies and beautiful, drawn-out sounds.

Review: Trying to pigeonhole Hidden Hawaii is a foolhardy thing to do and that's certainly the case with this trilogy of Nautil 12"s that Felix K's label has just released. Who are the artists? On this first record we're met with DB1, a name who first appeared on Hidden Hawaii via a split 12" with Martsman in 2012. Here, this cryptic alias provides two cuts of ambient, dub-tipped industrial drum and bass which comes out the other end as a cohesive brand of lucid electronica without the '90s stigma attached. Quite the mouthful of an explanation and meagre attempt at explaining this record, but as Felix K proves again and again: electronic music has no boundaries.

Review: A Chicago native, Hakim Murphy has been impressing with his singular brand of cosmo-techno over the last few years. Everything that he's put out has a distinctive and personalised feel to it. From the grainy percussion shots to the tangled synth loops, it really does give you the idea of outer space. He's back on Machining Dreams with this super-limited mini LP which delivers some of his deepest material yet, including some beatless stunners such as "Subsonic Cools". Our standout piece has to be "Wobble", however, in which Murphy really showcases his ethereal style and talent for long, twisted excursions into the moodiest of constellations. Top!

Review: In addition to his mythical DJ sets with JG Wilkes as Optimo Espacio, JD Twitch has built up one hell of a label in Optimo Music, housing some of the best electronic releases of the last five years, including some mind-bending reissues such as Zummo With An X by Peter Zummo. This time it's a debut affair from newbies Shit Work and no surprise, it's another cracker! The opener "Patience" is edited in trademark fashion by JD Twitch, producing a gorgeously progressive house track for the late hours. Shift Work's "Associations" is a daring house experiment with some menacing sirens, and the title track "Scaled To Fit" lies somewhere between electro and techno. The final piece, "(Less) Merchandise" is another wide-eyed synth jam with one killer bassline and some nasty, metallic industrial trickery to boot!

Review: The original pressing of Subsequent Pleasures, the self-financed and ludicrously limited debut EP from Dutch darkwave pioneers Xymox (later to rename themselves Clan of Xymox), is notoriously hard to get hold of. Props, then, to reissue specialists Dark Entries for making it available again on vinyl for the first time since 1983. While this version doesn't include all of the tracks featured on the original, it does contain all the killers, including the electro-goth wooziness of "Going Around", the Joy Division-ish "Strange 9 To 9" and the superb synth workout "Call It Weird". It's one of those releases that should be an essential purchase for anyone with even the remotest interest in darkwave.

Review: Lucio Fulci's 1980 flick City of the Living Dead remains one of the more popular zombie films, despite its obscure Italian origins. The soundtrack, composed by Fabio Frizzi and originally released on Italy's Beat Records in 1982, has becoming something of a must-have for horror soundtrack collector, partly due to its' difficult to obtain nature. This deluxe, remastered reissue from horror specialists Death Waltz - complete with new artwork - is therefore very welcome. It's an entertaining but curious concoction, delivering an atmospheric mix of dark choral moods, chilling orchestral compositions, rubbery kosmische, leftfield cinematic funk, synth-laden wig-outs and prog-rock influenced oddities.

Review: The second release on Prins Thomas' Rett I Fletta imprint - an outlet for "music for Neanderthals", according to the producer - comes from the label boss himself. It features two versions of III album closer Apne Slusa, plus two previously unheard tracks. It's notably more electronic - and pleasingly analogue in origin, too - than much of his work over the last few years, with less obvious krautrock and progressive rock influences. Highlights include a super deep and crackly interpretation of the title track from Margot, an acid-flecked space disco extension of the same cut from Thomas himself, and "Akken E Det Du Snafse", a heavy but stripped-back exercise in murky, late night techno. "Slufsa", a stripped-back beat-heavy dub of "Apne Slusa", is also superb.

Review: When it comes to industrial, post-punk sounds, Severed Heads have done it better than almost anyone else. In our humble opinion, only the likes of Throbbing Gristle can match the fury with which these guys recorded songs. Formed in 1979, the band is now certainly branded with a legendary status, but it was actually their output in the 1980s which really stood them apart. The lovely folks over at Medical have reissued 1985's classic City Slab Horror! Words cannot truly describe the innovation with which these guys worked, with some of their tracks potentially being labelled as 'proto-techno'. The whole LP is absolutely killer, filled with deranged vocal samples, dusty breaks, shuffling beats, piercing percussion and a frenzy of distorted basslines. Highly recommended whether you're familiar with their work or not.

Review: The FRKWYS series from RVNG Intl returns with another interesting partnership as veteran British guitarist Mike Cooper comes together with New York-based Steve Gunn for an album based around the Fado style of blues music native to Lisbon. While the former has a background in blues guitar going back over 50 years, and is responsible for the Rayon Hula album in 2004, which translated the patterned flora of aloha shirts as looped samples of Hawaiian vibraphone player Arthur Lyman, Gunn is a former member of Kurt Vile's backing band whose successful solo career has its roots in an immersion in free jazz and psychedelia. As such they are prime candidates for the FRKWYS project and Cantos de Lisboa is an illuminating set with the seven tracks forming a compelling abstract addition to RVNG's ongoing year of excellent releases.
