Review: September 23rd is the first release in William Basinski's new Arcadia Archive series. Recorded in September 1982 in his first loft in the DUMBO neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, September 23rd is a recently unearthed early entry in what has become a hugely inspirational and influential catalogue. Built from a piano piece that Basinski composed in high school in the mid-1970s, September 23rd quickly evolved into a vastly different work, upon its revisitation. Using the John Giorno and William Burroughs cut-up technique, Basinski fabricated an elaborate Frippertronics and feedback loop tape delay system, resulting in the quiet but dramatic set of sounds and resounds you hear here.

Will Thomas Long's and Danielle Baquet-Long's magnificent album Celer is an alluring fusion of classic ambient and minimalism that comes steeped in a very real sense of romance. It comes with underlying themes of longing, melancholy, and nostalgia and begins with the sound of a train evoking a sense of travel. Throughout the piece, grandiose string loops alternate with various field recordings, creating contrasts between the concrete and abstract, the mundane and the exalted. Despite the epic feel of the string loops, the title, 'Engaged Touches', hints at intimacy. This powerful romanticism characterises much of Celer's work, making this another noteworthy addition to their growing repertoire.

Review: Taylor Deupree's next project is an ambitious one that finds the artist re-imagining his own well-regarded album from 2002, Stil., in an elaborate acoustic fashion. Sti.ll comes after a long-running collaboration between Deupree and Greyfade's Joseph Branciforte, an arranger and producer who has translated Deupree's focus on meticulously loop designs and hypnotic reputation into the world of chamber music. In place of the original digital sounds are clarinet, vibraphone, cello, double bass, flute, and percussion. The overall rhythm and tone of the original are maintained having been meticulously transcribed and then performed by an ensemble of New York musicians. It is a fascinating work that straddles two worlds to perfection.

Review: The 2002 film The Hours starred hefty Hollywood talents Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore, and the original score was composed by no lesser titan of his industry than Philip Glass. It is a masterful work from the legendary minimal composer and is here presented across four sides of vinyl by the Nonesuch label. It has plenty of thick, lush strings and lots of tonal suspension with cool piano parts, plenty of heavily pregnant silences and cascading scales that all add plenty to the film itself as well as being a great standalone listen.

Review: In 1992, Francis Ford Coppola tapped Polish composer Wojciech Kilar to create the score for his adaptation of Dracula. Kilar, relatively unknown at the time, crafted a haunting and atmospheric composition that adds depth to the story of the infamous vampire. The score relies on low tones to evoke dread, as heard in the main title, 'Dracula: In the Beginning', where deep cello and bass strings set a sinister tone for Count Dracula's eerie castle. 'Vampire Hunters' builds a tense violin theme, punctuated by woodwinds and percussion, reflecting the determination of Van Helsing in his pursuit of the vampire. The over-arching theme is one of the inescapable nature of change, as crystallised in the crumbling Croatian hotel Lattimore references in the album title. After exploring notions of time on previous records, for this one, he embraces the here and now and that lends itself to a record steeped in mindfulness and meditation. As such, Sacred Tonalities is a perfect accompaniment to introspective moments with textural soundscapes placing you at the centre of them. The harmonics range from soft to gritty, the moods occasionally hint at trance and the layers of bass, piano and arps bring subtle and ever-shifting rhythms.

It's the first work since 2019's The Sacrificial Code on which Malone has composed for the organ - the instrument she's best known for. Review: Estonian contemporary classical musician Arvo Part is by now perhaps best known for his devastating opus 'Spiegel Im Spiegel'. But to focus solely on this ascendant piece would be to do a disservice to the best of his works, of which there is not only much, but also a personally idiosyncratic method that suggests genius. Mississippi Records expand on this elusive and fascinating musician's oeuvre, helping disseminate a new collection of renditions by Boston-based chamber orchestra A Far Cry. Part's music is ternary, and he is responsible for the use of the term "tintinnabular" in music theory: a far cry from the bell-related meaning of the term, tintinnabular music refers to a specific compositional style in which one hand arpeggiates the tonic triad (plays notes 1, 3 and 5), while the other hand ascends the remaining notes of the scale in stepwise motion. Decidedly minimalist, then, the versions of 'Silentium' and 'Vater Unser' in particular render Part's technique in full naked technicolour, with their thin strings building to gobsmacking, tearjerking heights. No wonder that, so famously, of his sparse compositions, Part had this to say: "I have nothing to say... It is dangerous to say anything, because if I've said it already in words there might be nothing left for my music."

Review: "One might thus regard the Welsh rarebit as a Machine in which a process is applied to the conditioning and perception of the world of bread and cheese." Suffice to say, John White might not have had the same ideas about what constitutes Machine Music back in 1976 as you do today. This is also the first time we've ever managed to get a reference to Welsh rarebit into the first line of writing about a record, so everyone is learning something today. "The Machines" White refers to are the individual tracks themselves, all recorded between 1967 and 1972 and all comprising different combinations of a thing. Six pairs of "bass melody instruments" made 'Autumn Countdown Machine', different permutations of "the articulations 'ging, gang, gong, gung, ho!'" comprise 'Jews Harp Machine'. And 'Son of Gothic Chord' is crafted from the sequential chord progression of four keyboard players, spanning an octave. Conceptual experimental and wildly imaginative stuff on the borderline of electronica, abstract, mathematical and something otherworldly.
