Movement, Before All Flowers (5:07)
Review: Max Richter's album, In A Landscape, is his ninth studio effort, and has been recorded at his Studio Richter Mahr in Oxfordshireia space designed with his wife, artist Yulia Mahr. This album marks a significant chapter in Richter's illustrious career. Described by Richter as a exploration of "reconciling polarities," weaves together electronic textures with acoustic instrumentation, bridging the human with the natural world and addressing life's profound questions alongside its simple pleasures. Richter elaborates that the album continues the thematic exploration begun with his 2004 work, The Blue Notebooks, but viewed through the lens of contemporary life. The lead track, 'Movement, Before All Flowers,' exemplifies this blend of depth and delicacy, offering a look into Richter's contemplation on existence and the passage of time. In A Landscape is not just a musical journey but a reflective self-portrait. It shows a composer ever in dialogue with the world around him.

Review: Bordeaux-based producer Franck Zaragoza aka. Ocoeur has always drawn on the natural world as a basis for his sprawling ambient compositions, and his latest album Breath is no exception. Over just six immersive pieces that intend to evoke the gratitude for simply being alive, Zaragoza this time evokes an impressionistic mountainscape, though still combines this romantic image with digital sonic pepperings and minimalist glitch textures throughout.

Dreams Of A Dying City (11:40)

Review: Rabih Abou-Khalil's Arabian Waltz is a masterful fusion of jazz, Middle Eastern traditional music, and Western classical. Featuring Abou-Khalil on oud, Michel Godard on tuba and serpent, Nabil Khaiat on frame drums, and the Balanescu String Quartet, the album achieves a unique blend of sounds. Abou-Khalil creatively uses the string quartet, which is traditionally harmony-focused, to play in unison or octaves, integrating them seamlessly into the Middle Eastern musical framework. The album's highlight, 'Dreams of a Dying City,' evokes a cinematic atmosphere with its brooding tuba and cello motifs. 'The Pain After' starts with an impressive tuba solo that transitions into a poignant interlude with the string quartet, reminiscent of Beethoven's late quartets, before Abou-Khalil's oud adds a touch of wistfulness. The title track, 'Arabian Waltz,' and 'Ornette Never Sleeps' provide dynamic and quirky contrasts. Arabian Waltz showcases Abou-Khalil's ability to innovate with guest musicians, creating a new and compelling musical style. It's a splendid album for fans of world music, jazz, classical, or anyone who appreciates exceptional music.

Review: James Clements (ASC) has been one of the most highly regarded artists in ambient, ambient techno and IDM scene since his evolution into the sound about 15 years ago. His ability to create deep soundscapes over lush beats and atmospheres come from his liquid drum n bass background prior to working with more cinematic tracks. ASC is back with a new release and it finds a home at the Past Inside the Present stable where he had put out a few EPs on the last couple years. This haunting and beautiful release Loss, explores various moods and atmospheres to great success. Tracks like the amazing and spacious 'Sensory Disintegration' to the poignant 'What More Can Be Said' which adds a lush airspace to a stunning piano piece. Some soundscapes are majestic and triumphant while others are minimal and then foreboding. New age and ambient fans will rejoice after hearing this magical album. Available in limited quantities so act quickly! Comes with download code inside.

Review: Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow's soundtrack for the 2024 thriller drama Civil War is a triumph of atmospheric soundscaping. Known for their work on Ex Machina, the duo brings their signature touch to this film, blending ambient synths with subtle guitar to create an immersive auditory experience. The score, perfectly complements the film's intense narrative and striking visuals. Tracks like 'Body Pit' deliver a haunting, dissonant edge, while 'Flashback,' 'Aftermath,' and 'Moving Out' offer a poignant, minimalist theme that subtly underscores the emotional journey of the characters. The music's simplicity and repetitive motifs evoke a powerful sense of place and mood, making it an essential companion to the film's story. Now available on vinyl for the first time, this score is for fans of the innovative film music and those who appreciate Salisbury and Barrow's evocative style.

Review: Max Richter's ninth solo album, In A Landscape, is his first recorded at his tranquil new studio in rural Oxfordshire, Studio Richter Mahr, which is a minimalist, eco-conscious retreat he shares with his wife. The album explores "reconciling polarities" and blends electronic and acoustic elements with the human experience and elements from the natural world. Comprising 19 exquisitely well-crafted and coherent tracks, this record serves as a reflective counterweight to the urgency of previous projects and focuses on Richter's immediate surroundings and a range of influences from Bach to Keats. In capturing moments of introspection using a simple palette of string quintet, piano, organ, and analogue synths, Richter impresses once again here.

Review: Steve Moore's Cursed Objects is a thrilling return to the library music realm, presenting a masterful blend of prog-synth-wave with chamber and symphonic elements. Released on the limited-edition Fold label, this album is a feast for fans of epic electronic explorations as Moore, known for his work with Zombi, Miracle, and Titan, delivers a captivating solo effort under his own name. The LP opens with 'The Uninvited One,' where serene arpeggiated synths intertwine with sweeping strings and plucked harp, creating a mystical atmosphere. The title track escalates into dark, brooding territory with a blend of synths, piano, and strings. 'Evolutionary Steps' showcases epic synthwave with expansive strings and driving rhythms, while 'The Icarus Feather' and 'Daily Affirmations' offer cinematic and meditative textures, respectively. Side-2 begins with 'Mesmer's Bauble,' a track imbued with introspective dread, followed by 'Quiet Springs,' which builds to a hopeful and panoramic scope. 'Festival Of Samhain' delivers a slow, desolate piano melody layered with dark synths, and 'The Icarus Feather (Revisited)' revisits epic synthwave themes. The album concludes with 'Shard Of Medusa,' combining a dark piano melody with harp and strings for a suspenseful finale. Featuring Steve's signature Prophet 6, Moog Minitaur, and Korg Polysix, and with a cover by Chris Stevenson, Cursed Objects is a standout in the library music genre, meticulously mastered and pressed for optimal enjoyment.

Review: The Undreamt-of Centre is the fourth solo album by esteemed Australian drummer, composer, and producer Laurence Pike and it offers a modern reimagining of the requiem mass. This evocative work blends influences from modern classical music, Japanese environmental ambient, fourth-world electronics, free jazz, and Estonian choral traditions that are inspired by Tallinn-based composer Tonu Korvits. Collaborating with the VOX Sydney Philharmonia Choir and conducted by Pike's childhood friend, the composer Sam Lipman, this wonderful record was recorded in a 19th-century Gothic church which has helped to create a haunting and atmospheric soundscape that pays homage to diverse musical traditions while pushing the boundaries of contemporary composition.

Review: Japanese vibraphonist and marimba player Masayoshi Fujita returns with Migratory, his masterful new solo album, on which his sonic explorations into the unknown continue. Forming part of a nascent uptick of albums exploring ideas of freedom in movement and displacement, Fujita's record sonically documents and expresses a return to his native Japan with his wife and three children, fulfilling his lifelong dream of living and composing music in the midst of nature after remaining resident in Berlin for 13 years. After this move, Fujita set about converting an old kindergarten into a music studio, and, perhaps adjoining his own experience of raising children, found himself composing Migratory in part through the dialogue formed of the ideaistic relationship of early childhood, movement and settling. Selectively mixing bird ambience, electronics and, of course, his patented vibraphone, Fujita's record is a melancholic but no less arresting one.

They have pressed this one up to various formats and this is a gatefold transparent lime green and black splattered vinyl from the acclaimed film scorer. He wrote for epics such as Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, The Sheltering Sky and The Last Emperor. This album takes in plenty of the most standout tracks from those movies, all performed by the Brussels Philharmonic and conducted by Dirk Brosse.

Review: We don't need to tell you why Tim Burton's musical masterpiece 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' is good, but what makes the soundtrack even better? Why, the inclusion of Sir Patrick Stewart's cut epilogue on track two of course! Celebrating the cross-seasonal classic's 30th birthday is this double zoetrope record package, featuring iconic scenes from the stop-motion flick. The star of the show (sorry Patrick) is, of course, soundtrack legend Danny Elfman, who has seemingly gotten OST production down to an art form even to this very day. The Oingo Boingo singer-cum-producer has scored every movie you can think of: 'The Avengers', the 'Fifty Shades' franchise, 'Mission: Impossible' just to name a small handful. What newer fans may not know is that Elfman cracks out the vocals for this musical album, acting as the singing voice for main character Jack Skellington - yes, unfortunately, it's not Chris Sarandon's beautiful voice you're hearing, as great as that would be. It's never too late to get into a timeless classic like this, go out and spread the good word.

Now, what better way to celebrate is there than to have him stop by for a unique 'versions' release of all the main themes from his scored films, and release them on a well-known indie label? A Symphonic Celebration hears Hisiashi revisit and recompose all the main themes from the likes of The Wind Rises, Mononoke and Spirited Away, putting fresh ears on his spirited, lifelong collaboration with director Hayao Miyazaki.

Review: Since his Yarmouth LP in 2020, and the spoken word-based Lovers Walk the following year, Boulter has concentrated on his soundtrack work. He has produced various scores and has also released a series of lathe-cuts featuring his soundtrack work among a few other projects. St Ann's, is a tribute to the council estate, on the edge of Nottingham city centre that defined Boulter's formative years. By the late 1960s, St. Ann's, like many other city centre areas, had become run down and was earmarked by the council for slum clearance. 340 acres were bulldozed and 30,000 people including David's family were compulsorily uprooted. In 1970 the Victorian streets were replaced with a Radburn-style estate. The soundtrack inspiration was set from his youth. Subtle use of guitar, double bass, vibraphone, tenor recorder and field recordings conjure up the old streets of cobble and slate, damp brickwork and grey skies, juxtaposing the newer post-1960s world of pebble dash and green grass, fresh air and a brighter future. This is a record full of personal memories, but it also tells the tale of Britain's inner cities and their renewal in the 60s and 70. As Boulter said: "It is a celebration of a community, streets that still hold a special place in my heart. I will always be from St Ann's and St Ann's will always be a part of me."

Review: Sometimes, the only backstory needed is that of a spontaneous friendship. Salenta and Topu met serendipitously in the summer of 2019 at a mutual friend's apartment in Bedstuy. Winding up months later in a miraculously "perfectly treated" recording studio in Bushwick, the pair encountered an ironic hurdle in that they couldn't get any of the awesome gear in the studio to work, so ended up recording everything acoustically on an old recorder. The result is the drained, ghostly and warbled sound of what could have been; a witchy instrumental folk cello and piano album, sounding to have been caught in imrpovised time; the temporality of friendship.

Review: Emerging from the ether in July 2024, Surfacing is the third collaborative long player from ASC and Sam KDC. Producers known for their ability to create and set moods with comparatively abstract ambient soundscapes, their latest is no exception. A collection of work which opts for an un-rushed approach to creating big feelings and moments from relatively consistent sounds and noises. Not much seems to happen, until you realise how much has been happening. In many ways, it's a maximalist thing - attempting to pick apart tracks like 'Mirage' and 'Shimmer' reveals the density of these sonics. Walls of sound that are acoustically and melodically light enough to float on air, yet actually so thick they swallow the listener hole, with little hope of escape until the final refrains fade.

This reissue revitalises the iconic tracks with enhanced audio clarity that captures the lush orchestration and emotional depth of Bocelli's performance. Highlights include the stirring 'Con Te Partiro,' the haunting 'Vivo Per Lei,' and the passionate 'La Luna Che Non C'e', all of which are ripe with Bocelli's rich tones and dynamic range. Romanza is one of many great works from this classical mainstay and it has never sounded better than this.

Argentinian composer and two-time Academy Awards-winner Gustavo Santaolalla crafted the emotionally resonant score, characterised by intimate, guitar-driven sounds. Pressed on coloured slabs of wax, it boasts exclusive cover art by Ashraf Omar and two lithographs - one by Omar and the other showcasing original game sketch art - all housed in a meticulously crafted outer slipcase.

Review: It is at this point a given that every Joe Hisiashi / Studio Ghibli soundtrack should land on our doorsteps. Hayao Miyazaki's latest film, The Boy And The Heron, is the very latest anime fantasy film to be released through the esteemed film franchise; described as a 'big, fantastical film', it follows a boy named Mahito Maki who moves to the countryside after his mother's death, discovers an abandoned tower near his new home, and enters a fantastical world with a talking grey heron. Whereas many of Hisiashi's other soundtracks deal in wide variegations of whimsy and heart-warmth, The Boy And The Heron skews purely to the latter, working in the bare but endlessly affecting mode of solo piano, and evoking the lonely but ultimately revelatory internal process that occurs during grief. Befitting of Miyazaki's controversial decision for the film not to pander to audiences or spell out meanings, so too does Hisiashi's contribution find reams of expression in a spare, single instrument.

Review: The original score to The Evil Dead is undoubtedly up their with horror's greatest sonic masterpieces. Joe LoDuca's tense, surreal, often subtle-if-not-ominous and omnipresent arrangements helped accentuate the raw, visceral qualities we all fell in love with the movie for. But they also help expand the on-screen universe, inflating it into a more three-dimensional realm you can almost reach out and touch. Some 37 years after it first hit our screens and terrified us to within an inch of coronaries, Joe LoDuca returned in 2018 to re-invent and re-think that soundtrack. In many ways, he's focused on accentuating what was there, but it's also expanded upon. Familiar yet strange and new, we now spend our days looking for a screening that utilises the updated music, an obsession which could easily - and fittingly - take us to the brink of madness itself.

Review: In the grand scheme of intertextuality, writing about the soundtrack to a TV series which is based on a video game definitely feels pretty 21st Century. Scored by Ramon Djawadi, before we start with the tracks themselves let's run through his resume. Iranian-German, he has been responsible for creating music for series such as House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones, Prison Break, Person of Interest, Jack Ryan, and Westworld. Then you have movie scores, like Clash of the Titans, Pacific Rim, Warcraft, and Iron Man, among others. Not a bad list by all accounts. While these have all been hits among audiences for many reasons, the soundtracks have been acclaimed in their own right. Fallout deserves plenty of love, too. Preferring to build tension rather than release the kind of pomposity that could easily find its way into a post-apocalyptic sci fi soundtrack, or indeed raging metal, it's brooding, unnerving, at times jarringly peacefully, and exceptionally well crafted.

Review: Balmat proudly present their 11th release with a new record from Polish artist Bartosz Kruczynski, whose minimalist atmospheric sensibility has caused the label to ease their worries over being dubbed an 'ambient' label, at least for the time being. Better known by his Rhythm Section-releasing house alias Earth Trax, Kruczynski takes a stark turn here, presenting a fierce yet fine selection of acidic ambient vignettes. On Dreams & Whispers, the pH scale is piquant without verging on completely corrosive; each ambient free association here - called either a 'Dream' or a 'Whisper' - is able to melt some psychic substrate without totally eviscerating or untying others. This is revelatory, yet not overthought ambient music, designed to treat, yet not brute-force-expose, the unconscious wishes behind our dream-distortions.

Review: It's surprisingly not that common for a director to pick music for their movie. There are accomplished experts at scouring and sourcing the most powerful and moving tunes for cinema, and, of course, composers who have established themselves as maestros of silver screen scores. Luca Guadagnino is an exception to the rule, then, with his coming-of-age drama, Call Me By Your Name, soundtracked via his choices. And what choices they are. The film itself is beautiful and incredibly moving, adjectives which also apply to the accompanying sounds. From the theatrical pop of Loredana Berte, to the staggering instrumentation of Ryuichi Sakamoto and heartfelt cries of Sufjan Stevens, this collection of tones is as varied as it is captivating from beginning to end, and - whether you've seen the flick or not - deserves a place on everyone's shelf.

Review: The late great Ryuichji Salamoto has left us with a vast body of work to enjoy until the end of time and amongst the many highlights of his ground breaking catalogue was this album, Async. It was Ryuichi's first solo album in eight years at time of release in 2017 and fund him taking inspiration from "everyday objects, sculpture, and nature." Sakamoto said this was an album about making the sounds he most wanted to listen to and was made with the traditional Japanese idea in mind that, "less-is-more." It is full of field recordings and was recorded in New York City with a deep selection of unique acoustic and electric sounds.

Review: Current scene favourite Nils Frahm teamed up with Icelandic multi-instrumentalist Olafur Arnalds on three breath taking excursions through lush ambient textures on "Stare" as a surprise release back in 2012 for label founder Robert Rath. "A1" features Frahm's entrancing irresistible melody over some gorgeous all-consuming strings and glacial soundscapes courtesy of Arnalds. "A2" with its heavenly, transcendental beauty has just got to be heard while "B1" explores darker territory with its excavating soundscapes accompanying the most hauntingly delicate cello notes. Exquisite!

Review: British crime television series Sherlock has proved hugely popular in recent years. The latest adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's writings have also been hugely enhanced by the soundtrack. That score has been composed by David Arnold and Michael Price, and has won the pair numerous awards including a 2014 EMMY as well as two further nominations for an EMMY and a BAFTA nomination. Their contribution to Sherlock is immeasurable as exemplified by this soundtrack which is thrilling and sinister, playful and suspenseful in equal measure. The music from all three of the first series is captured here on this limited blue vinyl.

Review: As this expansive reissue proves, Max Richter's 2004 album The Blue Notebooks remains one of the greatest neo-classical works of recent decades. The album was famously inspired by the 2003 US invasion of Iraq and featured narration from actress Tilda Swinton. Such was the record's impact, in fact, that numerous pieces subsequently appeared on a variety of high profile movie soundtracks. To celebrate the work's 15th birthday, Richter has bundled the album with a second disc of largely unheard material. This includes a couple of intriguing remixes by Jlin and Konx-Om-Pax, two archive tracks produced during the album sessions, and a handful of new recordings of key instrumentals. These are all excellent, of course, but still pale in comparison to the inspired original album.

Review: Coming from a classical piano background, Nils Frahm has certainly turned into one dark dude! Having already released plenty of works on a myriad of labels, he lands on London-based Erase Tapes with what is probably one of his wildest pieces of music to date. Spanning 12 tracks in total, Frahm goes from joyful odes to the piano over to psychedelic synth improvisations to what sound like intricate tape manipulations, nutty drum-machine programming and a bag full o'field recordings. If you're into the idea of Tchaikovsky on some serious amounts of stimulants then look no further, this guy is shaping the way pianos are played...

Review: SAULT's body of work is almost untouchable. The mysterious collective has turned out plenty of it in the last couple of years with no fewer than four fantastic albums. This one is a complete left turn, though, which ditches the edgy alt-rock, sou land jazz for an altogether more subbed and symphonic sound. It is a soaring astral soundtrack with plenty of wide open spaces, grand arrangements and plenty of uplifting and celebratory sounds drawn from hugely spiritual choral music and contemporary classical.

The original tracks from the album are joined by an all new composition 'Landscape Skizze' which was laid down in 2005. Review: Ryuichi Sakamoto is making a very welcome return here with his first solo album since 2017's async. Milan Records are releasing 12 in January to coincide with the venerated Japanese composer's 71st birthday, and the timing is poignant given the album draws from musical sketches created while Sakamoto battled for two and a half years with cancer. Sakamoto himself describes reaching for his synths as a kind of therapeutic response to a big operation, and so the music carries an added depth of personal experience from one of the most profound ordeals a person can go through.

Review: A new chapter in the 'zen music for disturbed souls' series, Erik K. Skodvin adds to his legacy as alter-ego Svarte Greiner with another stunning EP that has plenty of layers to dive into, albeit on the surface seems constructed in an ultra-minimalistic way. Understanding the nuances takes a little background reading, but before that let's talk sounds - reverse out fragments of cello, electric-acoustic improvisation, sparse, dark, almost bleak and certainly a little but eerie. If that sounds intriguing enough, the process behind it should seal the deal. 'Devolving Trust' is actually a live recording, captured in the depths o the Schneider Brewery, Berlin. A setting the producer himself describes as "wet and hollow" with "long reverb", it's aural effect defines the music that's here. 'Devolve' then takes those tones and rethinks, retouches and reorganises them with similar gravitas.

Review: Bugge Weseltoft and Henrik Schwarz first crossed paths on 2011's Duo, a sophisticated blend of Schwarz's cosmic disco tendencies and Wesseltoft's exquisite jazz piano. It was understated, but brimming with inspiration, and it's widely hailed as something of a modern classic. As such, it's a treat to see the pair reunited for Duo II, once more on Jazzland, but if you were expecting a repeat of the first album, think again. With guest vocalists and musicians stirred into the stew, Schwarz and Wesseltoft explore all kinds of new terrain without losing that immediacy and delicacy that made their first joint effort so charming.

Their latest project welcomes the legendary David Sylvian into the mix alongside Kazuko Hohki, who was in 80s synth pop oddity Frank Chickens amongst other projects. Their collective venture for Cortizona treads predictably unpredictable territory, where minimalism, sound design and free improvisation merge into a meditative, distinctive whole. The woodwind and electronics intertwine in sublime fashion, resulting in a compelling trip for anyone who appreciates delicacy and risk in their leftfield electronica.

Review: There isn't a Star Wars fan in the known galaxy who isn't singing the praises of The Mandalorian, a series which has gifted the world (and the merchandising machine) with the magic of Baby Yoda. As well as the stunning sci-fi action on screen, the series is also notable for the striking soundtrack from Swedish composer Ludwig Goransson, and now you can score a highly collectable edition of that very work thanks to this awesome picture disc. With the titular hero's helmet on one side, and of course wee little Grogu in his hover basket thing on the other, this is one that will look as good on the shelf as it will sound on the platter.
