Cat: PHI 12. Rel: 20 Feb 19
  1. Run For My Honey (4:00)
  2. Run For My Honey (Lexx & Kejeblos remix) (3:08)
Review: For their latest trip into musical paradise, Zurich's Phantom Island crew has turned to debutants The Gagosians, a trio made up of former Soulphiction guest vocalist Suzana Rozkosny, A.C. Kupper (Guitar) and Kay-Zee (Synths). In its original form "Run For My Honey" is a slightly creepy but hugely enjoyable 4-minute chunk of no-wave wonkiness, with Rozkosny's strutting, post punk style vocals rising above lo-fi drum machine beats, surf-rock style guitar loops and elongated organ chords. On the B-side, Label co-founders Lexx and Kejeblos provide a stellar remix that drags the track further towards skewed, Balearic-minded electrofunk territory. While many of the original instrumentation remains, their body-popping beats and thickset synth bassline give the cut a whole new dancefloor dimension.

  2. New Politik (Anna Wall remix) (5:50)
  3. Electric Light (Curses remix) (7:35)
  4. Infinity (Isolating remix) (5:48)
Review: The Golden Filter's "Autonomy" album has been a surefire highlight of the year for lovers of fresh twists on the coldwave tradition, and now the London-based outfit's music is undergoing the remix process with a stellar cast of sonic surgeons. First up is Medlar, who takes "Autonomy" and roughs it up into a decidedly freaky house diversion that keeps the edgy spirit of the original intact. Anna Wall takes "New Politik" into sparse, minimalist places, while Curses adds a seductive strain of post-punk gloominess into "Electric Light". Isolating completes the set with an icy industrial reduction of "Infinity" - a powerful atmospheric piece that does great service to the original.

Eisbaer (12") (1 per customer)
Cat: WRWTFWW 041. Rel: 01 May 19
  1. Eisbar (4:48)
  2. Film 2 (3:36)
  3. Ich Lieb Sie (3:23)
Review: The latest outing from Swiss reissue specialists WRWTFWW takes us back to 1981 and the debut single from Bern-based post-punk combo Grauzone. The 12" release of "Eisbaer" has long been a must-have amongst fans of off-kilter, dancefloor-ready new wave, and this replica reissue includes all three tracks featured on that version. Opener "Eisbar" sets the tone, with the bands weary, half spoken/half sung vocals rising above a backing track that's powered forwards by relentless bass guitar, screeching riffs and broken computer style electronics. "Film 2" is a heavy, synthesizer powered workout peppered with delay-laden drum hits and odd noises, while closing cut "Ich Liebe Sie" is a clicking and quietly melodious affair that's almost entirely electronic.

Raum (12")
Cat: WRWTFWW 043. Rel: 11 Dec 19
  1. Raum (3:49)
  2. Raum (Naum Gabo rework) (5:16)
  3. Raum (Ata extended mix) (7:40)
  4. Raum (Naum Gabo rework - radio edit) (3:06)
Review: Grauzone's 1980 cut "Raum" has long been an overlooked gem - a heavyweight, dancefloor-centric post-punk disco cut that was previously hidden away on a hard-to-find compilation. Thankfully WRWTFWW Records has decided to give it a single release, accompanying the re-mastered original - a killer blend of spacey electronic pulses, punk-funk bass, snaking sax lines and electronic pulses - with some brilliant new remixes. The standout rework comes from Naum Gabo, who joined forces with Liquid Liquid man Dennis Young to deliver a percussive, low-slung take rich in fuzzy guitars, jaunty electronic melodies and breathless male vocals. The Ata Extended Mix, which opts for a more dubbed-out sound, more picturesque melodies and echo-laden guitars, is also rather special.

  1. Oceanic - "Parallel Lines Of Stripes" (7:59)
  2. Gilb'R - "Cosmogonie" (6:28)
  3. Lucas Croon - "Threshold Stimulus" (6:25)
  4. Neuzeitliche Bodenbelage & Sam Irl - "Faeden" (5:35)
Review: Earlier in the year, Fantastic Twins' Julienne Dessagne offered up the first volume in a new series of multi-artist EPs with a decidedly psychedelic electronic bent. Four months on, she's assembled another team of musical miscreants to deliver more audio "Microdosing". Oceanic kicks things off with the Steve Reich style melodic loops and gently pulsating electronic rhythms of "Parallel Lines Of Stripes", before Versatile Records founder Gilb'R dives deep into swirling ambient waters via the multi-speed oddness of "Cosmogonie". Over on side B, Lucas Croon fuses post-dubstep rhythms, skittish drum solos, twisted acid lines and intergalactic electronics on "Threshold Stimulus", while Neuzeitliche Bodenbelage and Sam Irl join forces for the kosmiche throb of "Faeden".

Hot Rod To Hell
Cat: DE 240. Rel: 14 Feb 19
  1. Hot Rod To Hell 1 (14:06)
  2. Hot Rod To Hell 2 (13:24)
Review: Roy Garrett born Roy Sambar in Colonia, New Jersey arrived in New York City hungry to explore the sex and porn scenes he'd seen advertised in the Village Voice's classified section. He danced in Times Square theaters The Gaiety, Ramrod, and Big Top before moving into adult film. From 1979 through 1983 Garret starred in ten films, five of them for Joe Gage, including his lead role in 'Heatstroke'. Throughout this period of self-discovery, he wrote the suite of poems that became 'Hot Rod to Hell'. In 1982 he recorded 48 of the poems with haunting, atmospheric score by Man Parrish, who also did several soundtracks for Gage. The project was produced for the stage and for cassette by Manhattan illustrator Robert W. Richards. Richards calls 'Hot Rod', "a searing voyage through the labyrinths of modern male sexuality; it's geography ranging from porn theaters to back room bars to the intimacy of shared beds. Only a man born at exactly the moment in gay history that Garrett was could have lived through and conceived this work." Roy Garrett tells his stories of sex, violence, truth, and illusion, a visceral and personal a record as any of that moment in gay history pre-AIDS. Joe Gage, describes 'Hot Rod' as, "...sweet danger. This is a perceptive look at the underside of love. It is funny, scary, surprisingly moving and best of all, extremely acute in observing the specifics of the human condition." All poems have been carefully remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The records come housed in a jacket designed by Gwenael Rattke and includes an 44-page full color magazine with all 48 'Hot Rod' poems plus 44 previously unpublished poems from Garrett's archive. All proceeds from 'Hot Rod' will be donated to Housing Works, a New York City based non-profit fighting the twin crises of AIDS and homelessness.

Review: Thanks to a superb eponymous debut album and a unique musical voice rooted in both skewed, lo-fi pop and four decades of electronic music culture, Georgia Barnes is an artist on the cusp of a major breakthrough. There's every chance that "Seeking Thrills", her latest album, will propel her further towards unlikely superstardom. It's a little more polished than some of Barnes' previous output, but the synths by and large sound analogue, the choruses are strong and there are occasional notable nods towards grime, post-punk pop and - in a more roundabout way - Daft Punk. An album worth picking up for sure.

  8. Teth (Baka) (4:51)
Review: It's hard to easily summarize the work of Georgia, AKA New York-based duo Brian Close and Justin Tripp. Like their previous full-length explorations, All Kind Music is a humid affair, with the duo lacing synthesized renditions of traditional Amazonian melodies over humid field recordings, and drum machine rhythms that draw influence from various international musical styles. Throw in eccentric electronics, dub disco basslines, modular bleeps and trippy vocals, and you have a set of tracks that are variously humid, eccentric, experimental and otherworldly, but always hugely enjoyable. You'll also struggle to find a wilder, more intricately programmed new age electro track than "Anhola".

Review: While comparisons have been made to The XX and Portishead, in truth .GIF are cut from a different cloth entirely. Yes, this is softly delivered electronic off-pop that packs a weighty emotional punch, but we're more in the cosmic playgrounds artists such as Bjork, C.A.R. or Coco Rosie inhabit. Preceding work defined by melancholia is left behind in favour of something that's more aggressive and gritty yet somehow also far more playful at the same time. At its most opiate, we have the eerie and awkward 'Indulgent Interlude', a lush overture no less. 'Done (Done Done)' represents the attitude end of the spectrum, all bumbling broken beats, stabbed notes and unforgiving lyrical delivery. Meanwhile, efforts like 'Vacant Speck' showcase beats designed for cosy, dimly lit dancefloors.

Review: Group Rhoda is the solo project of Mara Barenbaum, who makes a fine return to Dark Entries with a labyrinthine trip though dark and chilly wave. Barenbaum's striking voice brings a haunting and ethereal quality to each cut while the synths undulate on their own whim. "Passing Shades is an investigation of the metaphysics of loss and the transitory nature of the material world" say press notes but that doesn't mean it is all doom and gloom. There are moments that manage to be mystifying and revelatory at the same time, as well as offering points of celebration and release such as on the kicking 'The Beauty's In The Waste', amongst other highlights.

Review: Originally released back in the early '80s, Veronica Vasicka's label has done its audience a fine service by re-releasing Portrait by Swiss duo Guyers Connection. Full of self-conscious vocals and in places decidedly lo-fi synth lines, it's surprising and disappointing that this collection wasn't a big hit first time round. After all, both "Pogo of Techno" and "Keep the City Clean" are as catchy as an oddball Yazoo, "Die Grille" is a jaw-dropping, windswept synth composition and "National Und Stander" sees the duo fuse ponderous piano lines with pulsing, rippling basslines. Best of all though is "Ein Glas Voll Gurken" a breathy synth-pop song that could have conquered charts had it been sung in English.

Review: Beggars Banquet turn to their Arkive arm for this 40th anniversary edition of Tubeway Army's classic early works. "The First Recordings", from 1979 has been identically sequenced as the original release with early versions of the tracks. Alongside hits "Replicas" and "Are "Friends" Electric?", our picks of the batch are "Me! I Disconnect From You", an archetypal deadpan delivery with mechanical grooves, the grungy and rock-laced "Only A Downstat" and lovable robo-pop "We Have A Technical".
