Review: In 1988, a Japanese art student called Naoki Asai gathered together a few of his more musical friends and recorded "Aber Heidschi", his sole album. Released in limited numbers as a private-press vinyl LP, the set has gone on to become something of a cult classic. Listening to this first ever reissue, it's easy to see why. Simultaneously dreamy, hallucinatory and super-sweet, the set's 12 tracks deliver a particularly dewy-eyed and tactile take on the increasingly psychedelic indie-pop sound then popular in Britain and the united states. Asai's Japanese vocals are particularly alluring, in part because of their boyish sweetness, while the accompanying music somehow manages to sound both extremely lo-fi and joyfully jangling.

  1. Colossus (8:07)
  2. Eclipse (10:30)
  3. Medusa (7:21)
  4. Raga In Asia Minor (15:10)
Review: Not to be confused with the pioneering Detroit electro outfit, Australia's Cybotron were an equally visionary group infusing their brand of psychedelic space rock with heavy synthesizer tones and more progressive tangents than you can shake a wizard's staff at. This is wigged out interstellar music of the highest order, lovingly reissued by Dual Planet for a new generation of trippers to go the distance with. If you dig Hawkwind, the heavier end of the kosmische spectrum and some of Tangerine Dream's loftier moments, you'll love Colossus. Our personal pick is "Eclipse" - 10 minutes of hard stepping intensity with some delicious Moog bass licks bringing the funk.

Review: Known to some as the first drummer to play alongside sequenced music, German electronic musician and composer Harald Grosskopf unveiled his first solo album back in 1980, and if the contents still sound exploratory, adventurous and pioneering now we can only imagine finding them four decades ago. OK, so those originals have undergone something of a makeover here, with new interpretations coming from talent including Thorsten Quaeschning, Paul Frick, Keidler and Stefan Lewin, among others. Nevertheless, the groundwork set out by Grosskopf, and the Berliner Schule musical tradition, remain the real highlights of the package - a veritable lesson in one of the most significant movements in electronic music, placed within a contemporary context. We wouldn't consider any collection of arpeggiated synth cornerstones complete without this one in there.

Magico (2xLP)
Cat: RL 34. Rel: 15 Jun 20
  1. Magico (5:40)
  2. Make Me Feel Alrite (7:54)
  3. SDM (7:15)
  4. You're Love (6:34)
  5. Ngaff (6:57)
  6. Muszic (6:39)
  7. Modera (7:07)
  8. The White Hotel (7:23)
Review: If you've much knowledge of Manchester's contemporary dance scene you'll know Red Laser Records, the label carrying this release, is a byword for first rate Italo, elec-disco and cold wave, while production stalwart Kid Machine owes at least some of his production name to Kraftwerk's 'Die Mensch Maschine'. Needless to say, then, retro futurism abound on this upfront collection of dancefloor slammers. Eight of eight are pretty much guaranteed to stick smiles on faces - and, most likely, overbites - and all go straight for the jugular when it comes to vibes. Tracks like 'You're Love' and 'Muszic' are heavyweight anthems packing emotionally charged riffs and refrains. 'Ngaff' makes you work a little harder, relentless percussive rolls creating a feeling of constant build, while closer 'White Hotel' pays respect to the feted club of the same name by way of a rallying call to arms for ravers everywhere.

Cat: V 030. Rel: 08 Jun 20
  1. Epitaph Of Ego (5:41)
  2. Moondust In My Eye (6:57)
  3. The Last Day Lasts Forever (20:25)
Review: There's a sense of dark mystery throughout this latest from Onont Kombar, which some will recall from his contributions to the 2016 mini-album, 'Split', featuring celebrated tracks such as 'The Doors'. Not quite a case of more of the same here - all three pieces feel very original - but nevertheless that steely and unnerving cold wave vibe is very much present and correct. This outing veers from suggestion to full intoxication. 'The Last Days Last Forever' sounds like a recording of a track from distance; you struggle to make out the details but together they create a powerful overall mood. Meanwhile, 'Epitaph of Ego' brings acid warbles and snares to the fore, resulting in a tune that owes much to the more Romantic side of electro and electro pop, with 'Moondust In My Eye' employing a chugging groove to give its whirring, industrial details a dash of obscure funk.

  11. Arpman (5:04)
Review: 2020 marks the tenth of collaboration for Red Axes, the Tel Aviv-based duo of Dori Sadovnik and Niv Arzi. Informed by post-punk, new wave, and a plethora of club sounds old and new, they have cleaved a singular path with their hefty discography. To celebrate their anniversary, they reunite with Dark Entries for an eponymous 11 track LP brimming with jagged guitars, spacy arpeggios, and hypnotic vocals. Although Sadovnik and Arzi have previously released LPs on I'm A Cliche and Garzen Records, Red Axes is their first effort written and conceived of as an album-length listening experience. This work flows effortlessly through a variety of stylistic detours, highlighting their ears as both keen listeners and skilled DJs. Opener 'They Game' is a grooving number that unifies the psychedelia of cosmic disco with the early 90s 'baggy' sound. The energy mounts further with "Shelera", a guitar-driven acidic banger, and "Sticks and Stones", a certifiable club hit fueled by sassy vocals courtesy of Adi Bronicki. Launching Side B is "Break the Limit", an EBM-laced number that wouldn't sound out of place on a Razormaid compilation. The following tracks wax moodier, with "Brotherhood (Of the Misunderstanding)" touching on darkwave territory. "Udibaby" and "Arpman" close out the album with their respectively dense and sparse takes on kosmische lysergia. Red Axes was mixed by Steve Dub and mastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. The album's artwork starkly depicts the project's name in blood-red smear. Also included is a postcard with full credits and album art. It's rare one finds an album that so casually challenges classification while still being firmly rooted on the dancefloor.

Review: According to reliable sources, 'Spirit & Form' takes inspiration from the music makers' respective childhoods surrounded by the gung-ho 1980s and plastic hedonism of the 1990s. Cast aside images of Wall Street brokers talking on handheld bricks and Clueless brats, though - it takes a couple of seconds to realise there's more of a debt to fantasy, anime (Studio Ghibli in particular) and formative-era RPG video games here. Tracks wash over you, and wash you in one fell swoop. A genuine tonic, save perhaps for moments such as the appropriately named and more-than-a-bit stressful 'Chase', this is all about creating relaxed, curious and vivid moods through a variety of noises; whether that's a wind sections, top-end percussion, plucked or soaring strings. Some might say ambient, we prefer adventurous.
