Sankofa Season
Cat: KITTO 001. Rel: 04 Dec 20
Broken Beat/Nu Jazz
  1. Low Ceilings
  2. Washed In You
  3. Eye Mo K
  4. Sankofa Song
  5. Learning Lessens
  6. To Your Heart
Review: Given their combined talents, you'd expect any collaborative album crafted by Andrew Ashong and Kaidi Tatham to be nigh-on essential. Happily, we can confirm that Sankofa Season, their first joint album, is ruddy, bloody brilliant (as Alan Partridge might say). Richly soulful, quietly jazzy and wholeheartedly positive from start the finish, the set sees them jump between deep jazz-funk, hazy contemporary soul, jazzy broken beat, breezy Latin soul, organic deep house and immersive, slow-motion soundscapes. Throughout, Tatham's organ, keyboard and piano work is highly impressive and Ashong's vocals are every bit as sumptuous as usual. Recommended.

Ode To Clyde Parts 1 & 2 (7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: SSR 223. Rel: 25 Dec 20
  1. Ode To Clyde Part 1
  2. Ode To Clyde Part 2
Review: For the latest hot-to-trot missive on his popular Soopastole Edits imprint, DJ Soopasoul has decided to pay tribute to funk's most sampled sticks-man, the late Clyde Stubblefield. Fittingly, he's chosen to do that by chopping up James Brown's 'Funky Drummer', whose much-sampled break was played by Stubblefield and has appeared on countless hip-hop cuts over the years. 'Ode to Clyde (Part 1)' naturally gives Stubblefield's break plenty of airtime, along with the song's hazy funk instrumentation and Brown's rasping lead vocal. Over on the flip Brown takes second billing to a spate of horn solos lifted from the legendary nine-minute version of 'Funky Drummer', with Stubblefield's incredible drumming providing constant dancefloor pressure.

  13. Chaka Khan - "Clouds" (Dimitri From Paris remix)
Review: For longer than many of us have been alive, Dimitri From Paris has been one of the disco scene's top re-editors. As a result, this box set of essential rubs from the legendary French producer is a genuine treat. Lavishly packaged and presented in a printed tote bag, the set whips through classic rearrangements of storming peak-time disco cuts from Odyssey, Dan Hartman, Phyllis Hyman and Keni Burke, before delivering dedicated 12s featuring multiple revisions of cuts by Ashford & Simpson, Jamiroquai and Chaka Khan. As you'd expect, there are many must-check tweaks to be found on the latter plates, including a slow-burn instrumental take on Ashford & Simpson's 'Stay Free', a wonderfully spacey 'Dubwize' rework of Jamiroquai's 'Cosmic Girl' and a sing-along-friendly version of Chaka Khan's stunning 'Clouds'.

  7. Remove All Clocks
  8. Friends
Review: A warm welcome back to cheeky downtempo twosome Bent, who hear offer up their first studio set for 14 years. Up in the Air is full of neat reminders that what made them so popular first time round, namely a seductive, slinky, atmospheric, sample-heavy sound that tended towards the tongue-in-cheek and was more likely to draw influence from dodgy, radio-friendly 1980s soft-rock singles and vintage easy listening than obscure Balearic beats or austere electronica. There are of course a few differences - it's far more polished than their early works, and even more musically detailed - but for the most part this is vintage Bent. Given how miserable the world is right now, it's rather nice to listen to an album that prioritises cheeriness, quirkiness and musical colour above all else.

Deep House
  1. You're Still The Same
  2. Is It Cool
  3. Take Off
Review: Andres has become one of Detroit house music's most celebrated producers in the last decade, but as any deep house nerd will tell you, he's been serving up superb singles and albums since the late 1990s. Out in the Open, which here gets the reissue treatment for the first times, dates from 2002 and is every bit as good as you'd expect. A-side 'You'll Be The One' is a great example of his trademark dusty, sample-heavy and loop-driven style, with crackling extracts from all manner of soul and jazz-funk cuts being melded into a hazy, quietly soulful deep house treat. The even deeper and dustier, MPC house jam 'Is It Cool' kicks-off side B, before the Detroiter goes all Moodymann on the impeccable, solo-laden 'Take Off'. A genuine must-have!

Review: Over the past few years, American producer Amerigo Gazaway has delivered some of the most inspired mash ups and bootleg remixes around, including a number that breathe new life into recordings by genuine soul and hip-hop greats. He's at it again here, crafting two killer cuts featuring the late, great Aretha Franklin. He first offers up a head-nodding take on 'Young, Gifted and Black' that cleverly combines his own beats, extended raps from Tallib Kewli and Mos Def as Black Star, and snippets of Aretha at her powerful best. Flip the disc for 'Chain of Fools', a stomping fusion of hip-hop and Detroit soul which sees him flit between Gucci Mane raps and more Aretha goodness.

Review: This limited edition triple vinyl set is as killer as the samurais from which it takes its name. The music is culled from the popular amine series on Cartoon Network that mixes hip hop culture with Japanese samurai culture and more than a little dose of jazzy stylings. There are vocal boom-baps and journeying spy themes, deep late night cuts and harder hitting joints, all performed by Nujabes, Fat Jon, Force Of Nature & Illicit Tsuboi. The downtempo charms of "Just Forget" are awash with oriental keys, while "Ole" is soul licked and "World Without Worlds" is superbly lo-fi.

Review: Following a debut solo single late last year, Georgie Sweet - a protege of fellow Futuristica Music artist Deborah Jordan - has finally got round to laying down and releasing her debut solo album, Misunderstood. It was produced in cahoots with a "dream-team" of fellow Futuristica artists (think Simon S, Marc Rapson, Mecca:83, L15 and Theo Howarth) and presents a warm, emotive brand of contemporary soul and future R&B that cannily combines head-nodding MPC beats and attractive electronics with tasty live instrumentation. Throughout, Sweet's slick, effortlessly soulful vocals - some solo, others multi-tracked and layered - provide the headline attraction. As debuts albums go, it's undeniably impressive.

Review: When it comes to colourful ambient records and sunset ready Balearic beats, Swiss producer/multi-instrumentalist Pablo Color has an excellent track record. Some of his best moments have come in cahoots with fellow artist Berlin Lama, who also guests on 'Les Claveles 36' - a gorgeously bright and sunny composition in which pin-sharp acoustic guitar motifs, reverb-laden electric guitar riffs and comforting chords rise above a shuffling samba groove. It's beautiful and life-affirming: a genuine slice of impeccable audio sunshine. Friend, and occasional collaborator, Alex "Lexx" Storrer provides the obligatory flipside remix, which strips back some of the guitars, adds tons of delay and reverb, and gives a bit more prominence to a tweaked, club-ready groove.

Review: Anthony Naples and Jenny Slattery's Incienso imprint is very proud to release the new album by London-based producer Call Super. Every Mouth Teeth Missing is Joe Seaton's third album, one that was three years in the making and described as being "a strange constant rain in his life". From the neon-lit tropical vibe of the title track and 'Opperton Swim', to the micro bounce on the affectionately titled 'Ekkies' to the introspective ambient soundscapes as heard on 'Sleep All Night With Open Eye' or 'Welcome New People'. Features musical contributions by his father David on clarinet.

Look Around
  1. Look Around
  2. Little Bit
Review: If you keep tuned to the soul underground, you may well already have come across 'Look Around', the stunning first collaboration between New York singer and activist Danielle Ponder and Melbourne-based "cinematic soul" outfit Karate Boogaloo. The song, which was inspired by the Australian bushfires earlier in the year, has been bubbling away for the best part of six months following its digital release and here appears on wax for the very first time. It's a simply stunning concoction, with Ponder delivering classic jazz-soul vocals atop a simmering, heart-stirring backing track rich in intricate instrumental touches and the slowest, most seductive of grooves. Fresh flipside 'Little Bit' is a little more up-tempo but no less impressive. In a word: essential.

Review: Since first emerging earlier in the decade, French threesome Domenique Dumont (Arturs Liepins, Anete Stuce, and an 'enigmatic', yet-to-be-named producer) has delivered two picture-perfect albums of atmospheric, occasionally Balearic, underground synth-pop for the Antinote label. People on Sunday, their first album for two years, started life as a synthesizer-based score for celebrated 1930 German silent movie Menschen am Sonntag, which they performed live at a festival in December 2019. Musically, it's arguably even more atmospheric than the trio's previous work, but is still rooted in their now trademark sound. What we get is a succession of melodious, huggable, sun-kissed and occasionally spacey instrumental tracks that sound like the missing link between Tangerine Dream, Air, 1980s Greek new age composers, Jean-Michel Jarre and little-known electro-jazz pioneers.

  1. Closer
  2. Closer (instrumental)
Review: Pre-pandemic, Ubiquity Records helped Timmion Records house band Cold Diamond & Mink get into the studio with American soul original Mike James Kirkland, whose two early 1970s have long been favourites of serious soul-heads. The result is a string of new singles, of which 'Closer' is one of the strongest (admittedly in a very strong bunch). Kirkland is at his smooth and seductive best singing tales of love over a typically classic-sounding Cold Diamond and Mink backing track (think hazy horns, languid grooves and glistening guitars). As usual with the Finnish combo's releases, you'll find their impeccable instrumental take on side B.

Who knows, but we hope so. Anyway, they reunited in 2002 for this album which now gets a reissue on white vinyl. It features new updated 2020 mixes of Monoculture, Together Alone, Darker Times, Last Chance and more , and is often said to be an overlooked masterpiece by many fans. The drums are unrelenting in their march forward, the vocals are honest and darkly humours, and the edgy, distinctive sound remains.

Review: Six years is ages for a band to go without releasing an album or doing very much. But for AC/DC, whose work rate has always been ridiculously high, it's a very, very long time. Between then and now, the band lost their lead singer, Brian Johnson, to hearing difficulties in the middle of their last tour, and saw drummer Paul Rudd arrested in New Zealand for 'attempting to procure a murder'. Talk about impetus to finally call time.

But then these are the guys responsible for one of history's greatest heavy rock triumphs, 1980s's Back In Black, released just months after formative frontman Bon Scott tragically passed. So it's no surprise Power Up, another post-traumatic release albeit an act of reunification with now (relatively) healthy Johnson and innocent Rudd returning, is among their best in the 40 years since. A comeback record that sounds exactly like AC/DC should - ballsy, bluesy, boozy riffs.

Review: By the sounds of this superb debut single, Australian outfit Regime are going to be a band to watch in 2021. Although their roots are in revivalist funk, 'Never Gonna Stop' sees them turn their hands to warm, loved-up and sun-kissed soul of the kind that was once all the rage in the mid 1970s. The grooves are toasty, the male and female lead vocals effortlessly soulful, and the instrumental touches - think languid jazz guitar solos, sweeping strings and lazy, trumpet-heavy horn arrangements - little less than superb. Flipside 'Deuzy Vibe', a P-funk flavoured, turn-of-the-80s boogie-soul style affair, is almost as good. There aren't that many of these clear-vinyl 45s around, so buy now to avoid disappointment.

Review: Mike James Kirkland is an American soul and rhythm & blues original. He's best known for his early 1970s albums on Bryan Records, Hang On in There and Doin' It Right, but he continues to perform and record to this day. Pre-pandemic, Ubiqiuty Records and Timmion Records joined forces to get him in the studio with the latter's house band, Cold Diamond & Mink. 'Stay Don't Go' is the one of a number of simultaneously released singles by the Kirlland/Cold Diamond combo. It sees him adding his distinctive, life-affirming vocals to a typically breezy, Hammond-and-horn-heavy backing track from the classic soul revivalists, in the process creating a timeless modern soul anthem.

  2. A Festa (Aroop Roy rework)
Review: Although his original productions are rather good, there's something extra-special about Aroop Roy's hush-hush reworks and re-edits. Invariably they breathe new life into dusty old Brazilian disco and boogie cuts. That's certainly the case with the Brazilian producer's latest missive on Kampana, the label he founded four years ago. A-side 'Hustle Do Brazil' is a rambunctious, party-starting treat that turns a handful of loops from a piano-heavy South American disco record into a bouncy, disco-house slammer. He subtly switches tack on side B, delivering an edit of the deeper, smoother and jazzier 'A Festa', wisely prioritising his source material's spacey jazz-funk synths, heady party atmos, good grooves and even greater electric piano stabs. Samba-disco magic!

Review: The latest set of Diguma Edits sees dusty-fingered Japanese digger-turned-re-editor DJ Muro take his scalpel to 'Got to Get Your Love' by Clyde Alexander & Sanction, a suspenseful and action-packed 1980 number from producers Peter Brown and Gary Davis. Muro first cuts down and compresses the ten-minute vocal version, making merry with the track's unusual combination of classic disco grooves, showtunes-style orchestration and eccentric vocals. Over on the flip he does a similar job on the slightly different instrumental take, in turns showcasing the track's crunchy guitars, warming electric pianos, spacey synths and grandiose orchestration.

Review: Given that Babe Ruth's 'The Mexican' is one of the foundational records of hip-hop culture, it's not that surprising to see old pals and mash-up maestros Marc Hype and Jim Dunloop recording their own version in tribute. It's a punchy, floor-rocking affair, with tough programmed drums replacing the original's killer drum-breaks. The re-recorded vocals and fulsome and intense, the funk-rock guitar riffs raw and fuzzy, and the organ parts wild and energetic. Over on the flip, mic man Mr Complex stars on 'Oh Really?', a party-starting fusion of hip-hop, funk and synth-boogie that sounds like another bona fide floor-filler.

Prep (pink vinyl LP)
Cat: BANT 19309.
Review: The term 'yacht rock' is arguably among the most divisive to be coined in music over the last few years. For some, the idea of over-biting to beats while leaning against the sun-kissed bow of a multi-million super-vessel sounds pretty good. Others prefer to write the trend off as nostalgic session music, a kitsch reminder of how unabashed and slick pop once was.
We're in the first camp, not least when it comes to Prep - the London four piece known for applying a particularly sparkling sheen to their music, which is grounded in modern R&B and electronica, but has its heart, or at least feet, very much in the white chinos of days gone by. The track 'On & On' has already caused waves this year (no pun intended) with its laidback Metronomy-esque groove, and if you enjoyed that the rest of what's here will fall into place.

As it now lands on vinyl for the first time, we have to say we wholeheartedly agree with his assessment. Sitting somewhere between neo-soul, broken beat, nu-jazz and future R&B, the set sees Jordan deliver impeccable, effortlessly soulful performances of her own songs with the help of an impressive cast-list of musicians and a string quartet. Brilliant from start to finish, its multiple highlights include the slow and seductive shuffle of 'Stay With You', the piano ballad 'Fear', the stunning R&B brilliance of 'Machine' and effervescent bruk-up number 'You Should Know'.

It's So Good To Know/Feel The Spirit
  1. Best Friend Around - "It's So Good To Know" (DJ Muro Diguma edit)
  2. Foster Jackson Group - "Feel The Spirit" (DJ Muro Diguma edit)
Review: Given his reputation as Japan's "king of digging", you'll be unsurprised to learn that DJ Muro's latest scalpel-style Diguma Edits are of thoroughly obscure, hard-to-find disco cuts. For example, an original copy of Best Friend Around's hard to find modern soul-goes-disco number 'It's So Good to Know' - a warming and glassy-eyed cut full of hazy grooves, super-sweet vocals and spacey synth sounds - would cost you hundreds of pounds; Muro's shortened, light-touch edit seems a bargain at a fraction of the cost. Foaster Jackon Group's similarly rare 'Feel the Spirit', a carnival-ready slab of Brazilian influenced jazz-funk/disco-funk fusion, is given the Muro touch on the flip, with equally as exemplary results.

Review: The Sushitech label turned 15 years old in 2020 and to celebrate this milestone Yossi Amoyal has put together the Fluere compilation across four discs, plus this extended fifth part, titled Fatum. Juan Atkins' remix of 'Someone' by Killer Loop takes up residence on the A-side of this three tracker, all swirling, warm pads and spiralling filters, the percussion almost leaning towards disco with its syncopated handclaps, although the overall effect is as shiny and futuristic as you would expect from this Detroit legend. Flip it over for Terry Brookes' 'Breaking Cycles', a calm spoken word narration providing a meditational mantra to accompany the chugging house foundations, full of gentle tease. 'Limits of Likeness' by MSL completes the package with restless electro machinations and shifting clouds of synth floating across its horizon. Sheer bliss all round.

Cosmic Dancer
Cat: 405053 863968.
Review: As one or two critics pointed out when the Angelheaded Hipster covers album arrived, Mark Bolan is something of a disputed musical genius who remains misunderstood by both naysayers and allies alike. The latter arguably downplaying the chart-topping pop-glam status he enjoyed during his 1970s T-Rex heyday, shortly before commercial and artistic decline led to mediocrity. Meanwhile, those who write him off as only relevant in that period forget the decade of broad work that preceded it.

What we can all agree on, though, is that he wrote some incredible songs that achieved universal adoration, and Cosmic Dancer ranks in the top flight. Nick Cave's contribution to the aforementioned tribute LP stays true to the source material, all emotionally charged lyrics set in heartbroken balladry. A delicate, piano-led ode to the narrator's lost youth, and a promise that despite the passing of time an energy will always prevail.

The real bomb on this edition is the full vocal version, where Brown's typically strong and soulful singing rises above slick boogie bass, colourful synth sounds, funk guitar licks and unfussy drums. That said, the dub style instrumental edit is really rather good too, with Muro wisely making more room for echoing vocal snippets, instrumental breakdowns and extended percussion passages.

Review: After an absolutely unforgettable wax-based debut, See-Saw is back with its second vinyl release, Discipline Of Swing Vol. 2. In at pole position is Hotmood with 'Seductive Look', a funk filled mover with lashings of percussion, sexy vocals and a brass section that'll have you jumping out of your seat.
