Review: REPRESS ALERT: Trelik reach into their recent archives with a much needed repress of Whalesong, the label's 2011 debut from UK producer OCH. With a compulsive passion for the dying art of crate-digging combined with a love for modern synthesis techniques the now Sweden based OCH manages to put together a 12" that could easily be described as psychedelic Chicago. "Whalesong" is a pulsating floor work-out which references the US greats whilst building an emotive sub-aqua soundscape. "Blind is The Wind" follows with a sneaky chord driven spoken interlude which creates an air of tension before climaxing into "Last Chance Saloon".

Review: More "extended breaks" re-edit fun from the popular Breaks & Beats bootleg "45" series, with the mysterious scalpel fiends behind the project delivering two more light-touch rearrangements of killer cuts from the soul and funk canon. On the A-side theys uccesffully tamper with Bronx outfit Brother Soul's heady 1974 classic "Cookies", naturally giving more prominence to the band's killer funk breakbeats, hazy horns and undulating bass guitar. Over on the flip they lengthen the bustling, tough and loose-limbed drum-breaks featured in Ramsay Lewis's electric cover version of Beatles' rocker "Back in the USSR". Lewis's organ solos are, as ever, energetic, sweaty and breathless, guaranteeing dancefloor pleasure every time the track is dropped.

analog synthesiser/drum machine
Notes: Pulsar-23 is a multi-functional analog synthesizer and generator of complex rhythmic patterns.

The Pulsar consists of 23 different modules, including four flexible sound generators with completely different structures, four envelope generators, four looper-recorders, a clock generator with dividers, a controlled chaos generator, an LFO, a two-channel CV-controlled effects processor, distortion, two controlled amplifiers, an inverter, a controlled inverter and two controlled analog switches. In addition to these 23 main units, the Pulsar also contains 13 auxiliary units, such as a four-channel MIDI to CV converter, a noise generator, four attenuators, two dynamic CV generators with sensory control, two impulse converters and single passive electronic components for live circuit bending.

Pulsar-23 can be used for the synthesis of percussion instruments and rhythms, bass and melodic lines, effects and sound landscapes, as well as a source of control voltage. The Pulsar functions in three different modes: stand-alone, MIDI control and CV control. Moreover, all the above features and control modes can work simultaneously in any proportion or combination. Additionally, Pulsar offers live circuit bending capabilities and the use of the artist's body conductivity to create patches and cross modulations.

Pulsar continues the line of organismic synthesizers begun by LYRA-8, but now in the area of percussion instruments.

Also, it has MIDI control and synchronization and a lot of smaller modules such as 4 assignable attenuators and 2 dynamic CV sensors for CV generation etc. In general, there are 55 knobs, 11 switches and over 100 inputs and outputs for patching, Eurorack integration, external mixing and processing, live circuit bending!

It comes in a special HQ bag with 30 alligator clips cables and PSU.

Review: We're firmly convinced that the A-side of this sneaky seven-inch from Mushi 45 main man Mister Mushi borders on genius. Entitled "Hard Lifetime", it sees the Japanese DJ/producer pepper a killer hip-hop-meets funk groove - all tight horn blasts, addictive drum breaks and jazzy soul guitar riffs - with elements of David Byrne's celebrated vocal from Talking Heads classic "Once in a Lifetime". The whole thing is wonderfully infectious, toe-tapping and hip-wiggling, breathing new life into one of music's most familiar tunes (and, for the record, the production is so good that Byrne's vocal sounds like it was tailor-made for the backing track). You'll find the Mushi one's fine instrumental take, shorn of all Talking Heads references, tucked away on the flipside.

Indie
Review: It's no secret to anyone who has done their homework on US alternative rock of the early 90s, and specifically East Coast alternative rock, that Galaxie 500 should have been much bigger. Nevertheless, they remain one of the most under-appreciated and overlooked bands of their era, a bolt of beautiful but raucous indie guitar stuff that only lasted four short years, and three albums, but really was something special.

This reissue of their live album, a recording of the final show of their last European tour, certainly reflects this point. Seeming to call on influences from relatively disparate sub-genres of the day - the end of post punk, bloody-nosed rock and, in many ways, something along the lines of what was happening thousands of miles away in Manchester at the time, it's a soaring stunner that has as much stadium drive (the epic 'Fourth of July') as it does woozy and weird experimentation ('Spook').

Metal
Review: In many ways it's just another tribute album, albeit one that managed to rope in a particularly epic list of players from across the 1990s heavy metal, doom, and hard rock scenes. Seen in another light, though, Black Nativity is a bit of a history lesson, showing the significance, influence and long-standing impact of metal pioneers Black Sabbath.

Their work is so revered that here we've got the likes of Biohazard, Sepultura, and White Zombie sidling up next to more chartable names like Ugly Kid Joe and Faith No More. Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson also makes an appearance, as does Ozzy Osbourne, the most legendary member of Sabbath. In the end though, it all really proves the power of the original material and the band led by all time riff master, Tony Iommi - the longest and only continuous serving member of the outfit across five straight decades. RIP.

Rock
Review: If Rumours, the eleventh studio album by British-American legends Fleetwood Mac, is heralded among the greatest records of the 1970s, or indeed the 20th Century, then any attempt to rethink its contents needs to be good. Luckily, we're talking about arguably the most accomplished shape-shifters music has ever seen, starting life as a U.K. blues duo and morphing - at times a little jarringly - through various lineups and eventually into hugely influential and commercially successful American pop-rock act.

Suffice to say the troupe manage to pull some excellent alternative versions out of the bag here, then. Granted, they might struggle to stick like the originals of 'Gold Dust Woman' or 'The Chain', but that's an unfair comparison. Those tracks have long-since cemented a place in pop culture. The variations here are quality through and through in their own right, though, which is nothing short of a triumph when you're dealing with untouchable material.

Review: While Canadian composer/producer Galt MacDermot will always be most famous for composing the score to legendary musical "Hair", he was also responsible for some killer jazz, soul and funk records in his time, too. Take "Coffee Cold", for example. Originally tucked away on his obscure 1966 jazz-funk LP, Shapes of Rhythm, the track sees him adding fluid jazz-piano solos to a chunky breakbeat-driven instrumental workout. On the flip you'll find "Space", a jaunty - if strangely mixed - fusion of lolloping but crispy drum breaks and jousting Harpsichord and piano solos. The track is arguably best known for being sampled on Busta Rhymes's "Woo-Hah", though before that it featured on MacDermot's 1969 soundtrack album, Woman is Sweeter.

Happily, we can confirm that Sankofa Season, their first joint album, is ruddy, bloody brilliant (as Alan Partridge might say). Richly soulful, quietly jazzy and wholeheartedly positive from start the finish, the set sees them jump between deep jazz-funk, hazy contemporary soul, jazzy broken beat, breezy Latin soul, organic deep house and immersive, slow-motion soundscapes. Throughout, Tatham's organ, keyboard and piano work is highly impressive and Ashong's vocals are every bit as sumptuous as usual. Recommended.

Review: For the latest hot-to-trot missive on his popular Soopastole Edits imprint, DJ Soopasoul has decided to pay tribute to funk's most sampled sticks-man, the late Clyde Stubblefield. Fittingly, he's chosen to do that by chopping up James Brown's 'Funky Drummer', whose much-sampled break was played by Stubblefield and has appeared on countless hip-hop cuts over the years. 'Ode to Clyde (Part 1)' naturally gives Stubblefield's break plenty of airtime, along with the song's hazy funk instrumentation and Brown's rasping lead vocal. Over on the flip Brown takes second billing to a spate of horn solos lifted from the legendary nine-minute version of 'Funky Drummer', with Stubblefield's incredible drumming providing constant dancefloor pressure.

Review: You would expect an EP titled "Retro-Future" to do a good job in uniting sounds from dance music's past and present. Naturally, Kepler's does just that on his first Sukhumvit release, opening with a hot-to-trot workout that adds warehouse-ready, turn-of-the-90s acid bass and glassy-eyed electronic riffs to smooth and shuffling tech-house drums ("Pickled"). He continues the glassy-eyed fun on the more squelchy, vintage MK-influenced bustle of "Out of Time" and "Groove Breakfast", which sounds like it could have been recorded at any time since 1990 (for the record, it also boasts some lovely piano stabs). Arguably best of all, though, is closing cut "In The Loft", which sits somewhere between '90s Italian house and organ-rich New Jersey garage.

Review: Italo-Disco, (at times abbreviated as Italo) is a music genre which originated in Italy and was mainly produced from the late 1970s to the late 1980s. The origin strongly tied to marketing efforts of the ZYX record label, which began licensing and marketing the music outside Italy in 1982. The genre faded in the early 1990s.

Italo disco evolved from the then-current dance music (including hi-NRG) and developed into a diverse genre. The genre employs drum machines, synthesizers, occasionally vocoders and usually sung in English.

This compilation contains some of the long lost tracks of the genre restored for the first time on CD. Vivien Vee "Remember" and Capricorn "I Need Love," are early work by Italian pioneer Claudio Simonetti (Goblin). All tracks digitally remastered along with its booklet, the original artwork and the original recording and extended versions.

Both sides sound fresh as the proverbial daisy though, with Blu Mar Ten's Sandstorm floating along on a cloud of echoing saxes and trumpets and a bed of strings and sparkling keys, the nifty breakbeat manipulation bringing early Photek, Source Direct or Klute to mind. PFM's Runaway is a little steadier in the beats department, playing a chugging Amenbreak off against some soul-heavy vocals, but with the same celestial orchestration going on way up there in the ether. Big on beats, even bigger on the musical element, this is the business.

Review: Italian composer Gadi Sassoon debuts on A Strangely Isolated Place with an experimental exploration of impossible physics; an intricate soundtrack based on newly created sounds and abstract atmospheres. In 2015 Gadi was invited to Edinburgh by The NESS Project to check out their groundbreaking sound synthesis work. With the help of a supercomputer, the NESS group had created new digital systems capable of creating sounds so complex, rich and realistic they were indistinguishable from acoustic instruments. Better yet, the code could be hacked to create completely imaginary sonic worlds with bizarre physical properties. Gadi fell in love with this idea and became resident composer at NESS for the following years, collaborating with the researchers to create impossible instruments: mile-long trumpets blown by dragon fire in Black Hole Fanfare, needle fingers brushing eternally vibrating strings in Pi (p), giant resonating lattices of bound masses and springs in the Moto Perpetuo suite and Collision Suite, marbles sliding on thousand-string fretboards in Young's Modulus, morphing bouncing objects in Chaos & Order, an orchestra of giant bowed basses in Life On A Tidally Locked Planet. Multiverse was designed and created by bending the laws of physics in subtle ways, effectively creating acoustic simulations from parallel universes. Gadi combined the NESS sessions with analogue synths and live instruments in his Milan studio, with the intent of creating a space for the listener to get lost in - blurring the lines between organic and synthetic, loud and quiet, the abstract and the familiar.

Review: Previous offerings on No Fuss have featured the likes of Saison, Crispin J. Glover and Dean Zepherin, and now the upfront house label brings together another selection of party heaters from a range of producers. Saison makes a welcome return with the feisty "Till The Day I Die", a richly produced vocal jam with plenty of uptempo shuffle in the drums. Risk Assessment lean on the keys to create a melodic mood on "I Don't Understand" and then Saison does it again with the bright and breezy "The Riff". That leaves it to Natasha Kitty Katt to finish things up with the heavy funking disco licks of "Plenty Good" - a get-down cut for all seasons.

  3. Double Talk (DJ Duckcomb Discomix)
Review: The second in the series of DJ Duckcomb affiliated reissues brings the Jamaica / London connection to light, with a reissue of the Brixton based band Red Cloud under the spotlight.

Double Talk was their debut release, coming on House / Freestyle / Reggae label Dancefloor Records, first explored by Emotional Rescue several years ago. After meeting with label head, Jeffrey Collins, in his then London base, the band went on release 2 albums, a 12" and 7" with him, as well as notably being Floyd Lloyd Seivright's backing band.

The original 1983 12"" - now a highly sought after digger's disco reggae bomb - Double Talk is a perfect summer Lovers jam. A tale of sweat talking, cross loving and loss, with redemption and strength, all backed by an uplifting drum and bass, with guitar, keys and piano highlighting the JA climbs instilled in dem sound.

Dubble Dub brings it all down, stripping away and lifting the interplay between keys and piano, allowing guitar to ride above warm bass grooves.

On the flip Duckcomb returns, with his now trademark riding the vocal'n'dub, gently teasing'n'pulling, looping'n'flipping, before letting the echoplex loose to just let the wonderful groove bump'n'grind.

Review: The fourth record in the Exit Planet Earth series features four more exclusive cuts designed for space travel.A

Exit Planet Earth - Hydrogen opens with no-nonsense electro from a master of the trade Sync 24 from Cultivated Electronics. 'The Rising' is an expertly produced bass heavy heater that is crying out to be played on a big rig. Representing Athe Melbourne chapter of the Lizard Tech Militia Reptant teams up with Dashiell for a mutant hybrid electro funk cut - 'Gortexia'.A

On the flip Moroccan heavy hitter Kosh returns to 20/20 Vision following his debut EPl 'Vicious Love'. Kosh offers up an intoxicating blend of deep melodic electro called 'Chaos in the City'. Wrapping the release up is James Shinra returning after his killer 'On & On' EP. Shinra rounds up this edition with an outstanding, unique composition 'Launch' that balances trademark melodies with a truly devastating distorted kick heavy reminiscent of classic Aphex Twin.

Review: A warm welcome back to cheeky downtempo twosome Bent, who hear offer up their first studio set for 14 years. Up in the Air is full of neat reminders that what made them so popular first time round, namely a seductive, slinky, atmospheric, sample-heavy sound that tended towards the tongue-in-cheek and was more likely to draw influence from dodgy, radio-friendly 1980s soft-rock singles and vintage easy listening than obscure Balearic beats or austere electronica. There are of course a few differences - it's far more polished than their early works, and even more musically detailed - but for the most part this is vintage Bent. Given how miserable the world is right now, it's rather nice to listen to an album that prioritises cheeriness, quirkiness and musical colour above all else.

  3. Crazy Kind Of Feeling (DJ Duckcomb Discomix)
Review: Emotional Rescue presents the music of Haile Maskel in the first in a reissue series working with Patrick Billard aka DJ Duckcomb, sourcing and licensing from this digger's vaults and out to the wider world.

Heralding from the furtive 60's Trenchtown, Jamaica, young Michael Ashley aka Haile Maskel grew up singing, learning guitar and bass. His first recording session was produced by friend Bob Marley, with Peter Tosh on keys, Robbie Shakespeare on bass and Carlton Barrett on drums.

The list of sessions is long, working with Lee Perry, Light Of Saba, Dennis Brown and Sugar Minott. Touring took him overseas where he settled in Los Angeles in 1983, soon launching his Opulence (Sound) label.

Maskel's band, the 101's featured members of The Twinkle Brothers, including cousins Asher and Debo Brown on drum and bass, and augmented by local players. Mixing conscious messages in love songs, Maskel crafts a boogie discodub on which to exalt an uplifting summer jam.

With the highly prized original the tapes unearthed unreleased dubs - "Take 1" providing a wonderful version. LA native Duckcomb found a trove of tapes of unheard material, still for discovery. For now, his longform Discomix, cutting and editing Maskel's vocal along with the dubs, completes a first archival splendor.

Review: 214 aka Chris Roman is highly regarded as one the most innovative electro producers on the planet following releases on esteemed labels including; Cultivated Electronics, Frustrated Funk, CPU, Klakson and Lunar Disko. 'Exposure to Winds' sees 214 return to the 20/20 Vision fold with his first full length album release in 5 years.

'Exposure to Winds' was inspired by Roman's love of the mountains that surround his native Washington State, living in North Bend where David Lynch's masterpiece 'Twin peaks' was filmed. It could be no co-incidence that 214 produces other worldly electronic music that always sounds out of the ordinary. This expertly balanced eight track vinyl release features a selection of styles and tempos from the laid back electro funk grooves 'Tongue Twister' and 'Ball of Straw' to dark room wobblers like 'Quick Start' and 'The Night's Shift'. AIt's a record that will live long in the boxes and crates of discerning DJ's but also provides an auditory adventure for the listener.

Review: Mixing Engineer, DJ and producer Yossi Amoyal is the man behind Sushitech Records. The label turned 15 years old in 2020 and to celebrate this milestone Yossi has compiled Fluere across four discs (plus an extended Part V - Fatum). The compilation shares some of his story through the records that inspired him and continue to do so. The tracks mark more than two decades of buying records. Starting in a time when new music had to be actively sought out and ending with the abundance of new releases available online today. Fluere marks the end of a chapter and is a very personal collection featuring forgotten tracks remastered for today next to exclusive and unreleased music. As the name Fluere would suggest, the tracks it contains are the glue that hold a set together. They are special, hypnotic, mood setters from artists who specialise in subtlety, from Two Lone Swordsmen and Baby Ford to Steve O Sullivan and Mathew Jonson. Each part of the compilation tells its own story, both through the music on offer and with an exclusive insert written by Yossi himself. The tracks themselves represent over three decades of moving dance floors. Starting with Mark Broom's Gira first released in 1995 and right up to Brawther's Serpent, produced in 2020, Fluere creates its own unique journey through this period of dance music history.

Review: There are few greater neo-soul albums than Jill Scott's impeccable debut, "Who Is Jill Scott? Words & Sounds Volume 1". Here it resurfaces on brilliant blue vinyl to mark two decades since it first hit stores. When it was first released in 2000, it turned Scott - previously best known for her work with The Roots - into a soul superstar, thanks in part to a string of radio and club hits (think "Gettin' In The Way", "The Long Walk", "The Way" and Mos Def hook-up "Love Rain (Remix)", but also the undoubted quality of the production and the strength of the now long established vocalist's conscious, heartfelt and empowering lyrics. It's the kind of set that should be in everyone's collection, so if you don't already own a copy, don't sleep on this remastered reissue.

Review: Andres has become one of Detroit house music's most celebrated producers in the last decade, but as any deep house nerd will tell you, he's been serving up superb singles and albums since the late 1990s. Out in the Open, which here gets the reissue treatment for the first times, dates from 2002 and is every bit as good as you'd expect. A-side 'You'll Be The One' is a great example of his trademark dusty, sample-heavy and loop-driven style, with crackling extracts from all manner of soul and jazz-funk cuts being melded into a hazy, quietly soulful deep house treat. The even deeper and dustier, MPC house jam 'Is It Cool' kicks-off side B, before the Detroiter goes all Moodymann on the impeccable, solo-laden 'Take Off'. A genuine must-have!

Their first 12" under the alias is a party-rocking affair, with the experienced duo dishing up some serious peak-time gold in the shape of A-side "Classic Case". Built around the manipulation of life-affirming loops from a much-loved Gladys Knight and the Pips disco favourite, it sits somewhere between a tooled-up re-edit and a slamming, Hot Creations style powder house smasher. The even bouncier "Touch My Soul", where slap bass and female vocal loops ride a bustling house rhythm, is every bit as endearing.

  2. Can We Rebuilt Our City?
Review: Sometimes a record comes along that is a wonderful anomaly that really is all about the music. Silver Leaf recently appeared on the radar via obscuro diggers on both sides of the Atlantic and landed with a Hey!
What is known about Silver Leaf, beyond that it was a short-lived mid-80s project out of Cincinnati, Ohio, is that it features ex-Zephyr keyboardist John Faris, working alongside the mysterious vocalist Silvia Leaf.
The difference between the blues and occasional psychedelic rock of early 70s Boulder, Colorado's Zephyr and the lo-fi recordings of Silver Leaf are striking, but in Hey! and Can We Rebuild Our City?, the power of the ballad and strong playing of John, is wrapped in mid-80s, mid-States lo fi heaven.
Whether a non-de-plume, Ms Leaf's searing, innocent vocals fly above John's keys and programming. Hey!'s repetitive exhalations act like a mantra to a party, while tom's chime in accompaniment. Here it comes!
Can We Rebuild Our City? starts with Faris' forlorn intro before crashing percussion heads to some kind of wonderful, as Leaf questions a calls to hearts.
Releasing just 3 singles, Silver Leaf's music is unique and essential, an experience and a delight to present.

Review: Inflitrate's electro mission continues unabated with this new drop from Maltese producer Sound Synthesis. He's previously been spotted on Fundamental, Gated and Nebulae amongst others, and he's coming correct with four brand new cuts right here. This is classically executed electro with a warm middle that will appeal to fans of Radioactive Man's early material. "Hidden Realms" is a brooding yet cosy workout, while "I Guess You Know" heads into more sparkling, emotive territory, and "Sonically Entwined" lets in a little Kraftwerkian noir. "Electronic Feelings" is a more downcast track to close out the 12", but there's still plenty of punch in the broken beat powering the track.

Review: By now most people know the story behind Rumours - one of the most decadent records ever made. It's not just the tales of cocaine-fuelled studio sessions and internal band strife that give this album edge, though. Lyrically the environment had a huge impact, relationship breakdowns and fuel for squabbles are common themes, but the sound itself is undeniably sharp and polished - like the glint of a knife as the light hits its blade or, perhaps more appropriately, a mirror.

Regardless of the background turbulence, this is quite simply one of the finest moments in pop and soft rock. 10million copies were sold within one month, and tracks like 'Go Your Own Way', 'The Chain' and 'Gold Dust Woman' became legendary genre classics. Most importantly, though, they still sound good today, reflecting the glory and talent that was the Mac in their finest hour.

Punk/Hardcore
Review: Definitely one for the heads, The Ramones record It's Alive is probably one of the best live albums ever released in the history of releasing live albums. A veritable AC/DC at Donnington (for the third time), only for punk rather than stadium heavy metal. Or at least that's our not-so humble opinion.

It's Alive was a sprawling, mind-bendingly expansive chapter in the iconic New York band's history, spanning no less than 28 tracks and two discs, although its genius is in the live emphasis. Songs like 'California Sun', 'Commando', and 'I Wanna Be Well' take on new, feverish urgency and rebellious swagger. Captured at a show in London on New Year's Eve in 1977, this new release is the counterpoint. As recorded at Victoria Hall, Stoke-On-Trent on 29th December 1977, It's Alive II is yet another time capsule showing off the raw energy and talent of this rightly revered outfit in their prime.

Now he appears on Constant Sound with yet more sophisticated dancefloor gold. "Take A Leap Of Faith" leads the charge with a driving yet delectably dubbed out take on peak time tech house, peppered with vocal slices and a cheeky acid rub. Review: The fourth multi-artist EP from blog-turned-record label Innate takes the imprint's inherently warm and far-sighted sound into new intergalactic directions. Offering a quartet of cuts from established producers and rising stars, all inspired by dreams of cross-cosmic travel and the alluring weightlessness of deep space. 004 explores the love of stargazing electronics in much greater deapth.

The A-side is all about melodious and spacey electro with Dutch legend Aroy Dee making a rare appearance away from his acclaimed M>O>S Recordings label. "Leegte" A1 is impressively immersive, cloaking a jaunty bassline and lo-fi beats in sumptuous aural textures and glassy-eyed chords. Accompanied by Innate label regular Gilbert, "Furthest Planet" A2 is a deep roller whose lilting lead lines, shimmering electronics and tumbling acid lines are little less than life-affirming.

On side B, the sound subtly shifts towards the multi-coloured, sci-fi shimmer of techno. Newcomer Jonski, (aka Bristol electro producer Zobol) drops "Venusian Surface" B1 - a classic interstellar jam full of vivid chords, echoing synth squiggles and alluring leads that rise above a classic tech-funk bassline. Last but not least, effervescent Welshman DJ Guy (Unthank/Other World Music) slams down an energetic techno stomper in "Aphelion Orbit": boasting brilliantly breathless drum programming, illuminated by the celestial shimmer of accompanying chords. A perfect conclusion to Innate's most action-packed release to date.

Matthieu Fauborg's epic opener - the tactile, melodious, dreamy and life-affirming "Please Stay", which more than justifies its 10-minute duration - feels like a statement of intent, while Dub Striker's "Mood" recalls classic New York and New Jersey bumpers of old.
