Review: REPRESS ALERT: Trelik reach into their recent archives with a much needed repress of Whalesong, the label's 2011 debut from UK producer OCH. With a compulsive passion for the dying art of crate-digging combined with a love for modern synthesis techniques the now Sweden based OCH manages to put together a 12" that could easily be described as psychedelic Chicago. "Whalesong" is a pulsating floor work-out which references the US greats whilst building an emotive sub-aqua soundscape. "Blind is The Wind" follows with a sneaky chord driven spoken interlude which creates an air of tension before climaxing into "Last Chance Saloon".

This time however, Emo finds itself playing up-front alongside the previously unreleased Melchester Acid Pt. 3 + two wonderful raw studio jams (Home & Away Game Acid) If Emotinium is the cute & cuddly festival fave played by the likes of Aphex Twin & Feel My Bicep et al, then Shirley this bonus disc of mutant acids are the evil Gremlin offspring, fed & watered after midnight; bubbling, fizzing, hissing and multiplying. Review: Back once again we have the long anticipated 2nd release from Hearlucinate . Based around a party in London where each guest DJ is asked to collaborate on an EP with the Hearlucinogenic host and resident Tristan da Cunha . This time round we have the uber talented Ron Obvious laying down two killer cuts aimed straight at the dance floor . UK attitude mixes with New Jersey style organs , breaks , bass and a bad ass beats... Giving us two tracks that have an old school flavour but super fresh with a modern aesthetic. Once again showcasing his ability to produce timeless , tasteful grooves that make you move . Next up is TdC with his bass driven hypnotic hybrid sound . Picking up where from the last ep with heavy bottom end , driving beats , a spooky groove , all topped off with a dash of sleaze. To Finish the EP we welcome back Freakenstein with his electro funk monster taking no booty prisoner. Dance floor dynamite as always from this exciting new artist . As always it comes dressed to impress with heavy weight 180g vinyl and artwork from the workshop of Atelier Superplus.

Review: For the latest in their series of reissues from the vaults of Noel "King Sporty" Williams' Konduko label, Emotional Rescue has decided to offer up a fresh pressing of the producer's sought-after Miami Funk favourite 'Shoot From The Hip'. Recorded with regular collaborator Bobby Caldwell and featuring KC & The Sunshine Band's Robert Johnson on drums, the track is a sweltering example of boogie-era Miami funk smoothness that comes laden with snaking sax solos, sweltering horn refrains and a killer groove. It comes backed by Williams' instrumental version and a brand new 'Discomix' from re-edit fiends Diesel and Dave Jarvis. Their version smartly takes the best bits from both versions, extending key sections to transform the cut into a near nine-minute dancefloor workout.

Review: The latest featured editor to contribute to Magic Wand's Special Editions series is former Public Possession regular - and recent Internasjonal signing - Anton Klint. As you'd perhaps expect, the tracks he's chosen to rework tend towards the eccentric and more crate-digging end of the Balearic spectrum. For proof, check the slip-sliding fretless bass, bubbly drum machine rhythms and AOR-goes-synth-pop vibes of opener 'Rain', the sax-laden, mid-80s AM radio goodness of 'Special O', and the lolloping, late night soft rock-meets-reggae pop brilliance of 'Marie'. Best of all though is 'Full Dose of Love', an extra-percussive, delay-laden chunk of undulating dub that's just crying out to be played loud at sunset.

Review: Two essential but lesser known pieces of the ambient jungle jigsaw dusted off and brought back to the table courtesy of the De:tuned label. Both sides sound fresh as the proverbial daisy though, with Blu Mar Ten's Sandstorm floating along on a cloud of echoing saxes and trumpets and a bed of strings and sparkling keys, the nifty breakbeat manipulation bringing early Photek, Source Direct or Klute to mind. PFM's Runaway is a little steadier in the beats department, playing a chugging Amenbreak off against some soul-heavy vocals, but with the same celestial orchestration going on way up there in the ether. Big on beats, even bigger on the musical element, this is the business.

Review: You would expect an EP titled "Retro-Future" to do a good job in uniting sounds from dance music's past and present. Naturally, Kepler's does just that on his first Sukhumvit release, opening with a hot-to-trot workout that adds warehouse-ready, turn-of-the-90s acid bass and glassy-eyed electronic riffs to smooth and shuffling tech-house drums ("Pickled"). He continues the glassy-eyed fun on the more squelchy, vintage MK-influenced bustle of "Out of Time" and "Groove Breakfast", which sounds like it could have been recorded at any time since 1990 (for the record, it also boasts some lovely piano stabs). Arguably best of all, though, is closing cut "In The Loft", which sits somewhere between '90s Italian house and organ-rich New Jersey garage.

Glover and Dean Zepherin, and now the upfront house label brings together another selection of party heaters from a range of producers. Saison makes a welcome return with the feisty "Till The Day I Die", a richly produced vocal jam with plenty of uptempo shuffle in the drums. Review: "The third edition of the Exit Planet Earth vinyl series features four more exclusive intergalactic selections from Ralph Lawson.A

'Exit Planet Earth - Nitrogen' features a selection of pioneers and up and coming talent. First up is a true legend of the UK electro scene, Keith Tenniswood aka 'Radioactive Man', who creates a constantly evolving sonic trip called 'One Out'. Watch out for the surprise sting in it's tail too. Sharing the A side is the incredibly talented Spanish producer Annie Hall, arriving fresh from her stunning CPU releases. Annie creates melodic landscapes, layered with intricate string orchestration driven by deep bass.A

On the flip side Helsinki-based Sunny Seppa aka Sansibar shows exactly why he is fast becoming hot property following his immense debut album on FTP - 'Targeted Individuals'. ASansibar brings the record back to the 4/4 with a flowing yet subtle working of synths and pads. Also based in Finland yet hailing from Holland is VC-118A, who previously caught our attention with his track 'PCB' a firm favourite at Exit Planet Earth events. VC118-A delivers some deep space dub with expertly crafted production centring on low end theory.

  3. Double Talk (DJ Duckcomb Discomix)
Review: The second in the series of DJ Duckcomb affiliated reissues brings the Jamaica / London connection to light, with a reissue of the Brixton based band Red Cloud under the spotlight.

Double Talk was their debut release, coming on House / Freestyle / Reggae label Dancefloor Records, first explored by Emotional Rescue several years ago. After meeting with label head, Jeffrey Collins, in his then London base, the band went on release 2 albums, a 12" and 7" with him, as well as notably being Floyd Lloyd Seivright's backing band.

The original 1983 12"" - now a highly sought after digger's disco reggae bomb - Double Talk is a perfect summer Lovers jam. A tale of sweat talking, cross loving and loss, with redemption and strength, all backed by an uplifting drum and bass, with guitar, keys and piano highlighting the JA climbs instilled in dem sound.

Dubble Dub brings it all down, stripping away and lifting the interplay between keys and piano, allowing guitar to ride above warm bass grooves.

On the flip Duckcomb returns, with his now trademark riding the vocal'n'dub, gently teasing'n'pulling, looping'n'flipping, before letting the echoplex loose to just let the wonderful groove bump'n'grind.

Review: Emotional Rescue presents the music of Haile Maskel in the first in a reissue series working with Patrick Billard aka DJ Duckcomb, sourcing and licensing from this digger's vaults and out to the wider world.

Heralding from the furtive 60's Trenchtown, Jamaica, young Michael Ashley aka Haile Maskel grew up singing, learning guitar and bass. His first recording session was produced by friend Bob Marley, with Peter Tosh on keys, Robbie Shakespeare on bass and Carlton Barrett on drums.

The list of sessions is long, working with Lee Perry, Light Of Saba, Dennis Brown and Sugar Minott. Touring took him overseas where he settled in Los Angeles in 1983, soon launching his Opulence (Sound) label.

Maskel's band, the 101's featured members of The Twinkle Brothers, including cousins Asher and Debo Brown on drum and bass, and augmented by local players. Mixing conscious messages in love songs, Maskel crafts a boogie discodub on which to exalt an uplifting summer jam.

With the highly prized original the tapes unearthed unreleased dubs - "Take 1" providing a wonderful version. LA native Duckcomb found a trove of tapes of unheard material, still for discovery. For now, his longform Discomix, cutting and editing Maskel's vocal along with the dubs, completes a first archival splendor.

If you've not heard it or missed out first time around, we'd encourage you to check out the producer's new 2020 version. While it's not vastly different, all of the key elements - beats, piano and the heavenly female vocals - have been re-recorded. As a result, the track has never sounded heavier, brighter, or better. The 12" also includes two superb DJ tools: a drum tool featuring his punchy broken beat rhythms, and a "Piano" mix that showcases his inspiring, virtuoso playing and nothing else. In a word: essential.

Review: Emotional Rescue continues to trawl through the bulging back catalogue of Noel Williams' Miami-based Konduko label, which the celebrated producer first launched to showcase his productions as King Sporty. 'Street Talk' hails from 1983 and saw Williams join forces with a hastily arranged group of backing musicians dubbed the Extras to craft a canny chunk of electrofunk rich in spacey synths, wild guitar solos and sweet female backing vocals. This edition pairs the original mix with the even more spaced-out dub on the A-side, with Rune Lindbaek delivering a brand new 'Discomix' on the flip. The Norwegian's version is even more spaced-out and cosmic, drenching the original's rapped vocal phrases and synth sounds and delicious amounts of reverb and delay.

He effortlessly picks up from where he left of on EP-opener 'Expansion', a near perfect slab of heavily electronic deep house melodiousness rich in bubbly lead lines, opaque chords, vibraphone style melodic motifs and tight, undulating acid lines. 'Star Traveller' is an even deeper and more intergalactic affair where starry synth sounds, echoing chords and wavy pads rise above a chunky groove, while 'Machine Logic' is a chunkier, slightly darker and more analogue-rich affair built around a robust basline. Arguably best of all though is closing cut 'Sun Garden', a sumptuous slice of summery deepness rich in delay-laden flute solos and enveloping electronics.

Here the long-serving DJ/producer returns to the Swedish imprint with three more re-edits, this time crafted in cahoots with Abi Clarke. The pair begins by delivering a suitably sensuous and extended take on a luscious Barry White classic ("Nothing But Love (for JB)"), before having their wicked way with a mid-tempo, head-nodding 1980s R&B jam from Mitume ("Hold Fast"). They stick in 1980s boogie-soul territory with rework number three, which sees them successfully tweak a gem by Steve Arrington ("Yes Indeed (Rock Free For Trouble)").

'Exposure to Winds' sees 214 return to the 20/20 Vision fold with his first full length album release in 5 years.

'Exposure to Winds' was inspired by Roman's love of the mountains that surround his native Washington State, living in North Bend where David Lynch's masterpiece 'Twin peaks' was filmed. It could be no co-incidence that 214 produces other worldly electronic music that always sounds out of the ordinary. This expertly balanced eight track vinyl release features a selection of styles and tempos from the laid back electro funk grooves 'Tongue Twister' and 'Ball of Straw' to dark room wobblers like 'Quick Start' and 'The Night's Shift'. He's at it again here on a pleasingly uncomplicated and on-point three-tracker for Rawax. A-side "Off Message" sets the tone, with O'Sullivan layering deep space chords and gentle intergalactic melodies atop a tough-but-rubbery beat. 3. Kosh - "Chaos In The City"
  4. James Shinra - "Launch"
Review: The fourth record in the Exit Planet Earth series features four more exclusive cuts designed for space travel.A

Exit Planet Earth - Hydrogen opens with no-nonsense electro from a master of the trade Sync 24 from Cultivated Electronics. 'The Rising' is an expertly produced bass heavy heater that is crying out to be played on a big rig. Representing Athe Melbourne chapter of the Lizard Tech Militia Reptant teams up with Dashiell for a mutant hybrid electro funk cut - 'Gortexia'.A

On the flip Moroccan heavy hitter Kosh returns to 20/20 Vision following his debut EPl 'Vicious Love'. Kosh offers up an intoxicating blend of deep melodic electro called 'Chaos in the City'. Wrapping the release up is James Shinra returning after his killer 'On & On' EP. Shinra rounds up this edition with an outstanding, unique composition 'Launch' that balances trademark melodies with a truly devastating distorted kick heavy reminiscent of classic Aphex Twin.

Review: Head honcho of Thule Records and an originator of the Icelandic techno scene Thor joins forces with Matt Thibideau, one of Canada's finest. The result is a masterfully crafted atmospheric glacial dub techno journey from beginning to the end. Transparent Thoughts EP includes, apart from the original, an astonishing home-brewed remixes by Matt Thibideau's project Altitude and by Thor himself. Altitude mix is deep, and has some serious dub treatment but still packing nice punch for the dance floor. Thor brings his signature sound to his rework; full of heavy dub-techno influences and a mix of techno and deep house beats. Essential for the serious vinyl-jockey. Thule Records is considered by many to be a pioneers in the field of dub-influenced techno music and was a starting point for many of Iceland's most renowned electronic musicians

Review: The 2nd release for Verdant in 2020 'Limbic Resonance' is a double A side 12 sharing the hearts and minds of 2 talented producers. The imprint once again provides a stage for a nascent artist; Nesa Azadikhah from Iran is a key voice for the underground scene in Tehran. Her unique style of music assimilates her culture and personal experiences with a worldly and studious appreciation of deep techno. Alison Marks, an established producer from London has an enviable catalogue of releases as herself, Lumina and as a member of Wallflower with Leah Floyeurs. Notably heard on Rebirth and Dogmatik her music is typically filled with warmth and soul.

Techno
  1. Aroy Dee - "Leegte"
  2. Gilbert - "Furthest Planet"
  3. Jonski - "Venusian Surface"
  4. DJ Guy - "Aphelion Orbit"
Review: The fourth multi-artist EP from blog-turned-record label Innate takes the imprint's inherently warm and far-sighted sound into new intergalactic directions. Offering a quartet of cuts from established producers and rising stars, all inspired by dreams of cross-cosmic travel and the alluring weightlessness of deep space. 004 explores the love of stargazing electronics in much greater deapth.

The A-side is all about melodious and spacey electro with Dutch legend Aroy Dee making a rare appearance away from his acclaimed M>O>S Recordings label. "Leegte" A1 is impressively immersive, cloaking a jaunty bassline and lo-fi beats in sumptuous aural textures and glassy-eyed chords. Accompanied by Innate label regular Gilbert, "Furthest Planet" A2 is a deep roller whose lilting lead lines, shimmering electronics and tumbling acid lines are little less than life-affirming.

On side B, the sound subtly shifts towards the multi-coloured, sci-fi shimmer of techno. Newcomer Jonski, (aka Bristol electro producer Zobol) drops "Venusian Surface" B1 - a classic interstellar jam full of vivid chords, echoing synth squiggles and alluring leads that rise above a classic tech-funk bassline. Last but not least, effervescent Welshman DJ Guy (Unthank/Other World Music) slams down an energetic techno stomper in "Aphelion Orbit": boasting brilliantly breathless drum programming, illuminated by the celestial shimmer of accompanying chords. A perfect conclusion to Innate's most action-packed release to date.

  4. Electronic Feelings
Review: Inflitrate's electro mission continues unabated with this new drop from Maltese producer Sound Synthesis. He's previously been spotted on Fundamental, Gated and Nebulae amongst others, and he's coming correct with four brand new cuts right here. This is classically executed electro with a warm middle that will appeal to fans of Radioactive Man's early material. "Hidden Realms" is a brooding yet cosy workout, while "I Guess You Know" heads into more sparkling, emotive territory, and "Sonically Entwined" lets in a little Kraftwerkian noir. "Electronic Feelings" is a more downcast track to close out the 12", but there's still plenty of punch in the broken beat powering the track.
